Windows Movie Maker makes my computer ridiculously slow and is infuriating because of the limited number of file formats it supports. Can anyone help me find a free or open-source video editing software that can help get the job done? Thanks!

I want to do some youtube videos, but I'd like to get some editing software to help me create and edit the videos. Nothing special, just backgrounds and image distortion effects. Is there anything out there that works okay on windows and is open source?

free on every windows computer
it should be on there anyway if not just download it from there site.
