Where can I find a free video editing software for windows that supports .mov?

So I recently got a new HD camera but realized the camera shoots in .MOV which is'nt very compattible with Windows. I can't edit the files in windows movie maker either. I've tried converting them but that still wont work. Is there any FREE video editing software for windows that can edit .mov? I'm using Windows XP sp3

How to convert .mov to .avi? Or video editing software that accept .mov?

I recently bought a Canon Powershot SX40 HS to take pictures/record video with. When I uploaded the footage, it came up as an MVI ____.MOV file. Since Windows Movie Maker doesn't seem to be accepting these kinds of files, how can I convert them? I've googled and tried out a few different softwares but they all make the videos shorter. Is there any free converting software that's available that doesn't cut down the video? Or is there any free video editing software that accepts these types of files? PLEASE HELP!
