Need advice, recommendations for a laptop to be used as a video editing workstation?

Nickname

I currently am using a Dell XPS 3.6 ghz, 1GB RAM, 250GB HD running a consumer version of Avid called Pinnacle Studio (v10 Plus). Problem is this is my "everything" computer (Internet, MP3s, documents, spreadsheets) so it bogs down when I try to do relatively simple video editing projects. I want a dedicated, reliable, powerful yet somewhat inexpensive system that has a small footprint. Considering a MacBook with Final Cut Pro but that could get a bit pricey.

Answer
You may want to re-consider using a laptop for that task. Usually laptops can't handle huge video/image file editing, you may want to use a desktop. The reason being is that desktops can handle more power. Don't go with a brand name computer, buy a clone computer that is upgradable. You can select every peripheral at a time, this way you an optimize every component. You do need to go with brand name parts, such as Intel, WesterDigital, ATI and so on. Let me know how it goes. zermenoj@yahoo.com

What's a nice inexpensive laptop that comes with a good installed editing program?

I would like to get an editing software like the MacBook's ($999) which i was looking to get, but way outta my price range.
my price range is around $400.
And for editing videos.
But i thought the MacBook comes with a free video editing program?

Answer
good luck rendering videos with a computer thats under $400. i strongly suggest saving up more money. save up enough money to buy a computer with an Intel i5 proccesor atleast if you want to do videos editing.

if you dont want to do that then make absolutly sure that the computer you get has a dual core proccessor. Intel processor are generally better than AMD. go for atleast 4Gb of RAM. and i would suggest buying an external hard drive to hold all the videos, cause in your $$ range the harddrive will fill up FAST.

As for a program for editing there are plenty of free softwares that any Windows computer can download off the internet. i would suggest asking which one is the best under the computers>software section of Yahoo answers.

I want a fast computer to do video editing, I have a laptop for e-mail, word, outlook etc. I need an inexpensive computer for just pictures and High Definition video editing.

Answer
fast and inexpensive do not go hand-in-hand. the more money you spend, the faster it will get. you could probably build an AMD quad-core system for under $700. for video editing though, you might want to go intel, intel cpus are better than AMD at some things, im not sure if video editing is one of them. but you could probably get an intel core2quad system for under $900, if you are looking at their new EXTREME cpu, then probably $1100+ also for video editing you would probably want a large fast hard drive. large hard drives arent too expensive, you can get a 500gb for $109, or a 1tb (1000gb) for $199. for super-speed you can get a raptor drive for $249 but i forgot the size. and if you are running xp you max out at 3gb ram, probably $60, for vista you can go to 4gb for probably $90.

What's a good inexpensive laptop for HD digital video editing?

My Toshiba laptop sucks. It can't handle the 780p and 1080p HD video editing workload I am giving it. Sony Vegas 9 and Premiere freeze constantly. What is a good laptop for video editing? What specifications should I look for in terms of modern processor speed/technology/graphic card/memory/etc...?

Also keep in mind I don't want to spend $2000... ideally I'd like to spend $1000.

Answer
What Toshiba Laptop model you have? You may not need to get a new laptop you may just need to upgrade your RAM memory.

I have an Averatec 3200 right now and I am less than pleased with it. Ineed to replace it soon and I am wondering what are the most practical and inexpensive laptops out there? I need something under $1200 and can handle my daily commute. what are you suggestions?

Answer
HP has a great range of laptops. The thing to look for can be a bit harsh at times, but a few tips may make the purchase easier.

Weight:
Pick a laptop that you will be comfortable carrying. If you have a long commute, i suggest that you stay around the 6 lbs range.

Size:
Just as the weight issue the smaller the lighter. 15.4 is a standard. Though 15's and 14's are becoming more prevalent.

Processor:
A Celeron or Sempron processor is not worth the money. Even if 'it's a really cute one!' If you like AMD go with the AMD Turion, if you perfer Intel, Intel Centrino. There are new levels of the processors out, but look for those names.

Memory:
No less than 512mb is worth the money. I suggest 1gig even if you are just browsing the internet and writting papers. With the new windows operating system coming out (Vista) memory is a good thing to be prepared with.

Storage Space:
This is the HardDrive. You will usually see it in 80gig or 100gig. Unless you do video editing or download a ton of songs to your Zune or other MP3 player, 80gigs will be fine.

DVD Burner vs DVD Rom:
Unless the price just soars when you see the DVD Burner, go for this option. No you may not be wanting to 'Make your own movies' but you will need to back up some data one day (and should do so at least once a month unless you dont use the computer) Also DVD Burners can burn regular cd's as well.

Glossy vs Matte Screen:
This is the last option i can actually think of and should not be over looked. Think of the environment you will be using the laptop in. If you are out doors you may have difficulties looking at a glossy screen.

Just keep in mind how you are using your new investment and the decisions will be obvious. As a place to purchase, I would suggest going to a Best Buy and asking for a 'Limited Edition HP' They are very well priced and are designed extremely well. I hope this helps... Best of Luck!

Which laptop is the best for me and semi-inexpensive?

I am looking for a laptop for the upcoming school year and I am wondering which would work best for me? I will be taking a course on how to use Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, so those programs will definately have to be on there. I will also be using it for research, surfing the web, music (lots of music). I don't really need anything special like photoshop but it would be nice to have some simple video editing software.
Any suggestions? I don't really want to get an Apple laptop though.

Answer
go with hp pavilion
dv9700t, HDX entertainment, dv2800t
