I need a new desktop or laptop, for video editing, help?

I need a new computer for video editing, i want to make vfx edits, but i don't know what i should get, and the laptop i currently have is slowly getting outdated, so i need ideas as to what i should buy, just a system that will cope with it and stay cool all the time

I think you should get alienware it has the most advanced technology for video and photo editing and it also comes in very handy when you finish and want to add those special touches but the alienware isnt designed to do just that it can do many things but video editing is very advanced in the alienware.

I am a ninth grade filmmaker but I do not own my own desktop computer. I do not want to get a laptop because there will be a large difference with the storage (ie; 1 TB vs 500 GB). I also will be using it with Adobe Creative Cloud (hopefully) and in addition, I want it to be able to do the normal things I need for school like writing papers and web browsing. I will not build one. It has to be already made. Also I want to know how it compares to the iMac and the Dell XPS . Thanks for any help :)

Just because it is a laptop doesn't mean it doesn't have a lot of storage... This Ultrabook that I have from Vizio has a large 1 TB drive, and is very fast and portable

Mac vs PC, and desktop vs laptop for video editing?

My laptop I have been using to edit footage died, now I need a new one. I can't decide between Mac and PC and if I should get a laptop or desktop. Help is appreciated.

What you're asking is too generic. No mention of your budget, alternative uses, etc.? There is a solution that will do what you need in each of the four categories you mentioned (PC laptop, Mac laptop, PC desktop, Mac desktop) but until I know what else you want to use it for and what your budget is, there's no way to make an informed recommendation. Generally, though, you're going to get more bang for your buck by buying PC - and what was your old laptop? I assume you own the video editing software you were using, so that should factor into your decision as well. If you switch platforms you may need to purchase again

I'm not up on the specs required by the latest Adobe software, but the problem that jumps out to me is the hard drive: It's a 5400rpm unit, you would really want a seperate faster hard drive to act as the video scratch.

The Hard drive in the laptop has to run the system and programmes, if you then add in video data then it's not going to be stable with all those MBs getting chucked around.

You need to get a seperate 7200rpm drive. Lacie do rugged drives with this rotation speed, if you have a firewire port they are also bus powered.

I don't see any reference to the bus speed either, you want 768 or preferably faster. This dictates how quickly the various components can communicate. No point having a fast processor and a fast external drive if the system bus speed is strangling it.

These are why desktops are generally the better option for video editing. Unless you use a mac. Which I do.

Desktops are more powerful, create less heat, have a longer life-span, are far more upgradeable and repairable, they are cheaper and you can have just about any sized screen you want.

The only negative is that they are not easily portable.

Ok, so I need a laptop for video editing for school, but I don't know which one to get. I need one with at least 2.4GHz, something with a RAM higher than 1.00 GB, and lots of memory. Please don't say "Don't get laptops, get a desktop..." because I already have a desktop great for video editing and now I need a laptop.

Well.. this could help you narrow down your choices..

Get a laptop with a dual core processor that rates at least the speed you want there.
Get a laptop that has a video card with dedicated video memory, as opposed to one that uses shared video memory.

Now. I know you can read. You posted the question here. You know that 2.4ghz something means something, and you know how to spot that. You know how to spot RAM and the numbers that will be around it.

You are perfectly capable of looking YOURSELF for what you want. Why? Because any laptop you look at, will list it's processor speed (that 2.4ghz thingy), how much RAM it has (Yep... RAM=RAM. No big geek translator needed there) and more.

In short, if you want to act as knowledgeable as you are trying (I don't need a desktop for actual computing power. Got one. I want a laptop as powerful and versatile as a desktop. I just don't want to take the time to learn what "powerful" means) then start looking yourself.

Prepare to be disappointed. Few laptops are made to the specifications you are expecting (made for video editing in mind), and the ones that are, are not cheap.

Maybe you should look at a Sager. Completely custom laptops.

id go with a desktop if its for gaming etc as its better for upgarding, u cant upgrade a games card in a laptop as there intergrated. so in a yeaers time ur laptop woudnt play new games. and better ram etc in desktop.
