notebook for professional video editing?

Q. i have seen new notebooks with thre intel core2 duo and 2gb of ram. can you really use these notebooks for video editing using sony vegas, avid xpress and other professional video editing tools? i have really wanted a notebook for its portability but i have been stuck between a compatible video editing pc that performs well and mobility. also if i do choose one of these notebooks, mac or pc?

Answer
i'll just put this very simple. small budget porn companys use Mac's to edit there films so there you have it.

but if you do buy a pc you can always buy movie editor software for like $70 they have TONS of them

alienware m14x-r2 - video editing?

Russell Di

looking at getting a portable editing machine to take to uni with me and i've been looking at the alienware m14x-r2 (specs at bottom of page), and i was wondering if a 768p 14" screen is good enough to use softwares like premier pro cs6, after effects cs6, maya, 3ds max and mudbox on with the screen size creating any issues for me

i7 3720qm 2.6ghz (turbo 3.6ghz)
12gb ram
500gb 7200rpm HDD
GT 650m 2gb GDDR5 graphics
1366x768 14" HD monitor

Answer
yes, the i7 3720qm is a quad-core processor that best for video editing program. Also the GT 650m is an extreme graphic card that good for rendering/graphic demanding process. That means this M14x should run premier pro cs6, after effects cs6, maya, 3ds max and mudbox smoothly.

When i run divx video editor and im saving a movie i made my computers CPU is at %100. divx video editing software says it needs 2GB RAM. i have vista 32bit with 2GB RAM. if i upgrade to 3 or 4GB of ram will that make the divx program and others run faster?
also when using the software my computer says it only has 24% RAM free.

Answer
RAM will speed up your computer depending on your computers processor. If your processor is too slow it might not make much or any difference. In your case it probably wouldn't hurt to have a Gig or two more RAM.

Is 2 gig of memory enough to run video editing software?

I have an entry level Gateway laptop that is 2 years old. It currently has 512 RAM; however I am thinking of upgrading it to 2 Gig (which is the max allowed for the motherboard). Is it possible to do video editing with that? I hope I do not have to buy another computer.

I have been using pinnacle systems software, and am hoping to get an external hard drive as well.

Thanks.

Answer
I don't think you "have to" upgrade the mem to 2gb. Try to go with 512 before upgrading, it will do.

What are some really good computers that are excellent for video editing?

Brazo

My budget is $1,000 for just the computer. No monitor, no keyboard.

It does not have to be great for gaming, just great for running video editing software.

included with warrenty. So that means that with the computer, add a warrenty for about 2 years, and it should come out with about $1,000.

Do you have any ideas?

Answer
It is difficult to recommend just one computer because there are many on the market that will work well for what you are trying to do, and they can be purchased at various prices, depending on where you make your purchase. What I can tell you to look for is the following:

a minimum of 2GB RAM (More is preferred.)
A minimum of 500GB hard drive space (Videos take up lots of room.)
A high end video card (Not all computer have the best of the best. Some have low end video cards that will not enable you to work too well. NVIDIA cards are pretty good. They sell a lot of different types of visual technologies.)

Having a computer cstom made is the best way to go because you can have more control of what you are bying. If you do not want to go that route, then I recommend computers by HP, as they seem to be made pretty well compared to other computers I've repaired. You can buy straight from HP's website, Newegg, or Tiger Direct. Don't just buy any model. Buy only those that have the specs I listed above.
