I have a music writing PC programme, but I'd really like a music editing/mixing programme - for mp3s, not midis. My main reason is that there are a few songs that I LOVE, but that I think I could make so much better with a bit of tweaking!! Any advice?

Answer
audacity
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

# FFmpeg support (downloadable separately) permits import and export of a much wider range of file formats, including WMA, M4A and AC3, plus import of audio from video files
# On-demand loading of uncompressed files eliminates the wait before files can be played or edited
# Linked audio and label tracks allow labels to move with their corresponding audio when cutting, pasting or changing speed or tempo

What is the best software to use to convert my videos into a format which I can play them on my Archos 504?

Emil S

I have lots of videos on my computer all in various different formats requiring different codecâs.
I wish to know what software I would require to convert all my videos which will allow me to watch them on my Archos 504.

I may consider purchasing the optional codecâs that Archos offer but would I really need them?

I donât mind paying for this software as long as its not a complete rip off.

Many thanks
Esafarloo

Answer
There are lotsa open source programs that can do that. Most every Movie Production Set uses it. BeOS is the strongest in that category, but Linux has way more Editors,Convertors.
I use Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake and Ubuntu 6.10 Edgey Eft as OSs that have pre-installed and configured software for that.
Know what? its free. Has been for years. Some Linux Distros are on a black list, they merged with Corporations for $, that is ok, but it is against the MIT,FSF Standards.
There is lotsa stuff that has Windows Installers, w32codecs, or win/.exe, but they better be your videos, and you better have allready placed a Copyrite on them, becuase once you use Microsoft/Apple Software to edit or even View it kinda legally becomes the property of the OS that is useing WIPO,DRM.
Akiga makes good stuff.
www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=psp
PSPro and junk there. Jasc madfe some good stuff.
My fave is still the Gimp.

Blender is a 3D graphics application released as free software under the GNU General Public License.
Blender started out as an inhouse tool for the commercial animation company NeoGeo.

The first large professional project in which the free version of Blender was used in Spider-Man 2, where it was primarily used to create animatics and pre-visualizations for the storyboard department.

"As an animatic artist working in the storyboard department of Spider-Man 2, I used Blender's 3D modeling and character animation tools to enhance the storyboards, re-creating sets and props, and putting into motion action and camera moves in 3D space to help make Sam Raimi's vision as clear to other departments as possible." [10] - Anthony Zierhut, Animatic Artist, Los Angeles
Friday or Another Day was the first 35 mm feature film to use Blender for all the special effects, made on GNU/Linux workstations [11]. It won a prize at the Locarno International Film Festival. The special effects were by Digital Graphics of Belgium.

Blender has also been used for shows on the History Channel, alongside many other professional 3D graphics programs.[12]

Are there any good FREE video editing/creating programs?

Tim Sing

I just got a new camcorder Samsung SC-MX10 and have no editing software. I mean threes always Windows Movie Maker but that sucks.

I need something half way decent that will keep the original quality of the film. I may consider purchasing something down the line if I really get into it. But there is always a free version of stuff that works just the same. So I thought Iâd ask.

Thanks

Answer
There are a couple around. None of them have the full functionality that a professional grade video editor like Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid or Final Cut Pro do, but some of them still have a fair number of features and capabilities. Best to research any video editor software you come across to see if its features and abilities match your needs.

VideoMach 2.7.2 - FREE - deceptively powerful. Assemble clips, break your video files down into JPG's or BMP's for individual frame editing and the reassemble them into a video file, trim out that pesky frame where you accidentally took a shot of your thumb, Crop, resize, apply filters, audio editing is included aswell (not great, but useable), convert between file formats, make thumbnails for your webpage. a very useful piece of software.
"high performance media processing engine with ability to construct ,join, split, filter, tune and convert digital video, audio, images and image sequences. Supports AVI, MPEG, MP3, FLC, JPEG, PNG, BMP, SGI, WAV, OGG and many other formats."
For a list of all versions, go here:

http://www.gromada.com/

MediaEdit Pro 2 - "Designed specifically for moviemakers, amateur photographers and new creative artists, MediaEdit Pro will show you the world of movie and picture magic and help create professional looking, impressive movie projects. It includes several unique features not found in any other product. This is not your traditional hard to use movie editing environment.
Enhance your projects by adding over 200 included stunning effects, filters and transitions. It is as simple to use as iMovie, but many times more powerful! MediaEdit Pro's ease-of-use lets even beginners create movies that will impress the pros!"

http://www.miensoftware.com/mediaeditpro.html

DDclip - "A professional, non-linear, non-destructive, multitrack, real-time audio and video editor for Windows. It allows you to process and mix up to 32 high-quality audio tracks (24 bit/96 kHz is available) with real-time audio effects (including any DirectX plug-ins) on PC with any Windows-compatible sound card."

http://www.softlab-nsk.com/ddclipro/

DDclip free 2.23 - DDClip Free 2.23 is the most restricted package of DDClip with minimal set of features. The difference between the pro and free version can be seen here

http://www.softlab-nsk.com/ddclipro/free.html

Windows Movie Maker 2 - FREE - An update of WMM that came with Windows XP, supposedly a vast improvement. And it's free.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

VirtualDub - VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for Windows platforms (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters.

http://www.virtualdub.org/

Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 - Slightly watered down version of its big brother Premiere Pro (now CS3), Premiere Elements provides basic editing and stability for a great price. If your looking for a product to edit with thats relatively inexpensive this is definetly worth a look. Its only $100 and with what you get its worth it.

http://www.adobe.com/products/premiereel/

Vegas Movie Studio - Sony Vegas is widely becoming the editing program of choice among alot of indie filmmakers. The interface seems to be what people like about it and its price is unbeatable. This package also comes with DVD Authoring software for DVD menu creation, animating, adding buttons, etc. If you are a Brickfilmer who wants alot of features, and doesn't have alot of dough this is THE choice for you. (its only $80) If you already own an Adobe Product or two, Premiere Pro or Elements is a better choice for the integration between them.

Answer
Try GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). I use this for all my editing and it has a wide range of features.

There is a very good program called Sumo Paint: www.sumopaint.com

You can use a good one free or you can cheaply buy it for $19 a year.

Is there a free movie editing program for Mac that ISN'T iMovie?

yuna_81818

I'm playing around with GarageBand and making small songs just for fun and I'd like to put them into something of a slideshow to upload on YouTube.. but iMovie takes up too much space on my Macbook, so I can't use that. Is there another movie editing program that I could use to put these songs with pictures into a movie format?

Answer
1. Avidemux- http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/index.html

Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and scripting capabilities. Avidemux is available for Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows under the GNU GPL license.

2. ZS4 Video Editor - http://www.zs4.net/

The new incarnation of Zwei-Stein Video Editor, it is advanced video editing and compositing software with over 150 built-in video effects. ZS4 runs on Windows, Linux and OS X, and is free to download and use. Best of all, itâs under continual development and hasnât been abandoned like some of the programs listed here.

3. HyperEngine-AV - http://sourceforge.net/projects/hyperengine/

Arboretum Systemsâ award winning video editing software became free in 2006 and is can be downloaded complete with full source code. Users can capture, arrange, edit and process video, audio and text in a free-form, trackless document, to create movies and slide shows.

4. Simple Video Splicer - http://www.chipersoft.com/

SVS is a basic video editing tool for basic cropping and/or piecing together of video files. It supports all formats that Quicktime can import, with the exception of MPEG, which must be demuxed first. It features a picture panning tool (aka, the Ken Burns Effect), and an audio track layout editor. Source code is included in the download. The programmer no longer supports the software, and his site, while making the program available, notes, âPlease do not contact me regarding this software, I have not worked on any of it in years.â
