What is the easiest way to get into film editing?

MxRacer207

i love film editing and i am into making action sports clips and things like that. i also made my own lord of the rings style film for my high school media studies course, I won three awards for it. i have looked into a film school in new zealand (home) and its really expensive.. im young and i dont want to jump into a big student loan and moving overseas... the first step i made this year was getting a job in a motorcycle shop so i can continue racing motocross but also have enough money to buy my own camera and make short films etc. I basically want to know if I should go to the film school or do it myself, im scared there will be no work for me when I come out of the school.

Any help at all would be much appreciated!! Thanks alot

check my videos out i made them last year when i was 15

Answer
I checked out your work on You Tube, and it's promising. The most important factor in succeeding in the film editing world is passion for the field. It's obvious you have.

Here are my thoughts for you:

I understand your situation -- film school there in NZ is expensive and you don't want the cost of moving overseas.

Since you are 16, you aren't ready for film school anyway. Here's what I suggest for you. Since you have enough money to buy your own camera (and I assume editing software), start now, and learn as much as you can about the editing software (www.lynda.com has great totorials for Final Cut Pro, and they're reasonable priced.

Spend a couple of hours each day -- as though you are already in film school. And produce a couple of pieces that showcase your abilities. (Watch TV and film to see what style you like best. Use that style in your work.)

And, practice every day (just like film school students do).

If you work hard, and have some good sample work, you just might be able to get a scholarship to film school.

Good luck.

Camtasia studio fuzzy?:??????

Fatyonthel

i use camtasia studio and save it as avi and when i upload to youtube its all fuzzy take a look and why???

http://nz.youtube.com/watch?v=V4VN1D2Fko4

Answer
First off No one ever heard of camtasia, my guess it is some free program.
When you do Video and Editing, you have to start with High quality product to begin with not a copy from some other source.
Like in Photo Editing when you use a copy of a copy it will turn out like a 2nd graders finger painting.
If you expect professional results you must use professional software. Read this link it should help.

Sony CX190 Handycam is right for me?

Q. I've been meaning to upgrade my old JVC SD camcorder which I brought 2006.
What I like about the CX190E is its on sale for NZ$373 normally NZ$499. It's Sony. And it's got Dolby Digital mic/audio and looks great.
What I don't like about CX190E is it only does 1080i (not 1080p) and only 50 frames not 60 frames.
Was considering the Panasonic V100 but not really into the Panasonic brand.
CX190 has 25-30x zoom and 300x digital zoom. Panasonic V100 has about 42x optical zoom.
I'm only going to be using it for when I'm on holidays like going to Auckland Zoo, or just for fun. Wonder if it has good editing easy-use software to put onto Youtube. Can the CX190 do 42x zoom without too much yuckiness to the video image quality? Any good responses would be great. Notice the camcorder can take 5.3MP still pictures which is still good. I ain't no professional photographer but still know how to use a camcorder and will be using it for holidays and for fun and posting maybe stuff on Youtube.

Answer
New Zealand use PAL standard video (North America uses NTSC).

PAL is 25 frames per second. 50 interlaced frames per second = 25 progressive frames per second.
NTSC = 30 frames per second. 60 interlaced frames per second = 30 progressive frames per second.

You did not tell us what you plan to play back the video on. 99.999% of the worlds population cannot tell if video was captured at 1080interlaced or 1080progressive. Chances are very high you are part of the 99.999%.

Optical zoom is useful. Digital zoom is useless and should be turned off as soon as you get whatever camera/camcorder you decide to get. Digital zoom is a non-feature and should be dropped from your comparison list.

Software that comes in the box with the camcorder is useless. MovieMaker (Windows) and iMovie (Macintosh) are fine for people who do not need to get too fancy. You did not tell us what computer you are using or what operating system is on the computer so we have no way to know which you should have. If your computer is more than a few years old, it is possible that it is not capable of dealing with the high compression AVCHD (MTS) files this (and most other consumer camcorders in the same price range) record.

Camcorders are designed to capture video and audio. Capturing stills is possible - but it is a "convenience feature". Conversely, with still image cameras - they are designed to capture stills and capturing video (and audio) is a "convenience feature".

The "process flow" is:
Capture video using camcorder
import to video editor
cut the crummy parts
add scene transitions
add titles
render to uploadable file (WMV or AVI from Windows; MOV or MP4 for Macintosh)
Upload to YouTube.

If you plan to use the zoom to its fullest, please use some sort of steadying device. Humans are not steady. Use of zoom makes movement seems much more. If you have access to binoculars, use them. Look at the sides of the image as you are looking at something far away. Lot of shake. Stabilization in the camcorder cannot totally fix this (unless you have a current version of iMovie with the "shake" removal feature that works quite well).

The CX190 may be fine for you... personally, I think a mic jack, manual audio control (and auto), and manual focus (and auto) will allow you to "grow" into videography. I like the Canon Legria HF R or HF M series camcorders...

Specs for video editing laptop? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Emily

OK I have video editing as my hobby and I need a new laptop because my one doesn't work well if trying to edit videos on Windows Movie Maker.
The processor is too slow; the one that I have right now is AMD Athlon (xt) Dual-Core QL-64 2.10 gHz and WMM freezes when I am working on it.
My desktop is 2.5 gHz and it goes perfectly when editing videos.
But I want to work on my laptop as well.
2 laptops have caught my eye and they have the EXACT specs except for the processor
The dell one is a Core i5 430 (2.26â Turbo Boost 2.53Ghz)
link: http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/4c355e24017616a6273fc0a87f3b068f/Product/View/XC8294

The Acer is Intel Core i5 430 (2.26GHzâ3MBâ1066FSBâ64-bit)
link: http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/4c355e24017616a6273fc0a87f3b068f/Product/View/XC6486P1

Or are they both not good for editing?
Can someone PLEASE just help me..........should I pick one of these or should I go for something else?

http://www.imcapture.com/IMCapture-for-Yahoo-Messenger/
http://www.camersoft.com/yahoo-video-recorder.html
http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Chat/Instant-Messaging/EatCam-Webcam-Recorder-for-Yahoo-Messenger.shtml

Use StickerCam:

It lets you broadcast picture slide shows.. video.. scaled correctly.. you can pan and zoom.. add text and graphics.. image filters..

> Click the Broadcast tab in StickerCam
> Select your own webcam as the source or if you are using the fake webcam options select video/images/screen capture etc..

> You can now drag'n'drop image/text/filters/special effects onto the preview window in StickerCam for everyone to view.. loads more features including high quality digital zoom and pan.. filters and special effects. Multi webcam split (use one physical webcam in multiple applications... eg. Yahoo and MSN at the same time) playing back AVI video and photo slideshows as your own web cam (fake webcam) and recording/editing/playback the webcam you transmit and view (Yahoo Messenger only).

Answer
i would get a desktop for video editing and gaming they are faster and you don't have to worry about battery life and don't heat up as much as laptops http://www.google.co.nz/search?safe=active&client=firefox-a&hs=w8v&rls=org.mozilla:en-US%3Aofficial&channel=fflb&sclient=psy-ab&q=gaming+and+video+editing+desktops+500&oq=gaming+and+video+editing+desktops+500&gs_l=serp.3...41728.42984.0.44088.4.4.0.0.0.0.231.864.2-4.4.0....0...1c.1.25.psy-ab..3.1.222.jBWGF81x1tw&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.50952593%2Cd.dGI%2Cpv.xjs.s.en_US.5T6bx5-0vDE.O&biw=1280&bih=917&ech=1&psi=AScVUoTyAY7PkgXXmICQBg.1377117953672.3&emsg=NCSR&noj=1&ei=AScVUoTyAY7PkgXXmICQBg&surl=1

how to choose good laptop?

vijay k

im a medical student, i want a good laptop

Answer
Thats a really good question. Now a days one good rule to live by would be " you get what you pay for". Just like Blair I think you should stick to the good brands and have a huge amount of RAM. I actually have 2GB of ram on my Mac Powerbook 17". But then It really depends on your needs. I edit videos and pictures when am on the road so I need this.

Figure out your budget. Basically ram is expensive. To run Windows XP alone 200mb of ram cant really cut it. you have to consider the other applications you have to run.

Battery life: Now thats a difficult one. the newer units that run on mobile centrino do last a bit longer from 3-4 hours on a fresh charge... using office applications only. Once you start using the cd or dvd roms then the juice get sucked out faster.

On board roms: (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW). you got to figure out what you need for your work.

Size is a big factor: Yes people size does matter! I like working with a big screen specially for my work. I have lugged my 17" almost everywhere, from NZ to the US and Asia no problem as long as you have a good carry on bag. I carry about 25lbs of equipment on my back. But still some airlines are more strict than others. If you fly business or first class then there wouldnt be any problems. Go economy and the crew ...yikes you get all sorts!

Oh yes wieght! the cheeper ones? ton and a half. The lightest I have encountered are from Sony Vaio, Asus S(slim) series ( external CD-rom), Fujitsu, Acer travellmate series, Mac powerbook G4 12", macbook 13" ( like the black one) . sorry i dont remember the others. Airlines limit you to about 15-20lbs.

Connectivity: you'll need wifi, bluetooth, RJ45 socket, USB (the more the better), firewire, Basic stuff! cant go with out these. IR ? thing of the past. The new models even have a cummunications slot that uses a sim card. wireless all over. Oh yes some have built in SD or MMC readers these things are handy if you use point and shoot cameras and other little gadgets. ( Hey you can get a 7 in 1 card reader anyway.)

Durability? Wow, for ordinary people like us? Toshiba for PC and Powerbook & Macbook pro. But for the military they use the water resistant panasonic. i forget the model. Drop it 3 meters you'll be fine. Take it to the ocean you're all right. Cost? hmmm starts at about $10,000.00 USD ... Nice!

Good after sales Service? Apple, Dell, Toshiba these are the top three from my experience.

Oh yeah you are a med student... lots of software on the PC side.

Hope this helps Doc.... and didnt confuse you enough.

Ciao
