How to edit .mod video files in Final Cut Express?

I am using a jvc everio camera and it outputs .mod files i want to edit them in final cut express or any editing software for that matter. I guess i need to convert them but all of the free converters are absolutely terrible does anyone have any tips

You already know the files need to be converted first...

Less compression is best. This means bigger file size.

do i need software? want some off- want some to edit and to send off. The editing software that comes with the JVC is VERY unclear on exactly how this is done--what up?

go to JVC's home site and then look for drivers/software
