What is a good free video editing software?

I'm looking for a free video editing software that is somewhat helpful. Something more helpful than windows movie maker at least. I'm being general here but im not looking for much. It has to be a legal free download and i do not want a trial version.

There are not many video editing software that work well for free. "they are very limited" I know you don't want a trial version but if you need one for just a little bit adobe premier pro cs6 gives a 30 day trial and you can do anything the full one does. Its a really powerful program but takes a bit of learning.

I have only used Windows Media, and I want try something new in terms of applying more effects on videos, Sony Vegas has awesome effects. I downloaded it but I uninstalled the trial version because it is extremely difficult to use.

Therefore can someone recommend me a good video editing software that is easy, free but comes with excellent effects as well?

There is no better free software than Windows Movie Maker.
Windows Movie Maker provides a basic (and free) way to make a simple slide show. It creates video as a WMV file, which can be viewed on a computer or, as you say, put on DVD using another DVD authoring program.
If you want something more advanced,you can try DVD Slideshow Builder,It's commercial software but worthy.easy to use with professional features and same sort of layout as Movie Maker however a lot more powerful. It doesn't take some learning.
