What are some cheap laptops for great for video editing?

Mark

Here is the thing. I want to create gaming videos for pc and console. I plan on recording games for the pc on another computer and having this one be the editor. I want the laptop to be able to run sony vegas edits ranging from 15 minutes to an hour and I want it able to capture gameplay along with 2 different streams of audio at the same time. I would prefer if it didn't cost more than $460 and obviously it needs to have at least 4 gigs of ram. Any other specs for the laptop don't matter. I will get an external hard drive separate so I can transfer videos easier and so when I capture it puts less stress on the device.

Answer
Your described use and "cheap laptop" won't work. Video editing makes heavy use of a graphics card, and any laptop with a dedicated graphics card won't be very cheap. Furthermore, if the computer's supposed to handle two streams of audio, perhaps run a game, and capture gameplay at the same time, we're talking some heavy multitasking. At least an i5, perhaps even more. And perhaps a dedicated (usb) sound card as well.

So... Cheap laptop? No. Not gonna happen.

You didn't say anything on size and weight, so...

Something like this, at least: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834216457

Video Editing Laptop?

I use Sony Vegas Pro, Cinema 4D, & Adobe After Effects, but my laptop(Sony Vaio) lags & is really slow when I'm editing. What are the fastest laptops for video editing? Ones that won't lag AT ALL. List some for me? I don't want a Macbook, so don't list that, thanks.

Answer
The fastest laptop for video editing is the one with the fastest processor. You can only render video as fast as your processor can handle it. RAM or what video card...that doesn't have anything to do with the speed of rendering.

What laptop should I buy for video editing?

Ross

So I have been looking around forever at different laptops and comparing prices. However, every website/forum I have looked at has suggested different ones so I'm confused as to what to buy. What I really want to know is what laptop I should buy for video editing. This is for Christmas when I have saved enough money. I am thinking of starting a youtube channel so I want to know what would be the best laptop (preferably under £600) to do this. I have been looking at an acer e1 series which boasts an i7 processor, 6gb ram, 500gb hdd and windows 8. The other is an hp envy m6 which has amd a8 elite quad core with 8gb ram, 1tb hdd and beats audio. Can someone please tell me if these laptops are good for video editing and if not which ones are? And also what to look for in a laptop for video editing i.e. RAM, graphics, processor speed etc.? Thank you it will be very much obliged :)

Answer
The laptops you have listed above are more than capable of editing 1080p videos.

For your optimum baseline specs:
- 3rd generation full voltage Core i5 OR an ultraportable ULV Core i7 processor (or an AMD equivalent)*
- 4 GB RAM
- 500 GB drive, or larger
- nVidia or ATI discrette graphics card (optional but recommended)

*almost all 35 watt Core i5 CPUs have a clockspeed above 2 GHz. But if your planning to buy an ultra-portable, it is best to opt for whatever 3rd or 4th gen Core i7 CPU they have to offer.

It looks like the macbook pro is the best laptop for video editing. I just want to know how big the hard drive should be, how much memory etc... Also, I use Final Cut Pro at school, but i dont have enough money to buy it for myself, so is Final Cut Express similar enough where I would be able to bring school projects home to work on with Final cut Express?

Answer
4gb of ram is adequate, as for the hard drive 500gb + if the vids are of any real size - final cut express has more than enough features for most of us, you just need to make sure you dont use any features in only in pro and then try to use in express, but it should work fine.

Are gaming laptops good for video editing?

Josh

I'm looking into getting a new laptop, mainly for video editing. Would a gaming laptop such as a "Battalion 101 W170ER Gaming Laptop" work? Is it good for JUST gaming, or does that mean it just has high graphics? I'm not looking into any gaming, just high-end video editing.

Answer
Gaming computers usually have very high specs, and they should work great for video editing, but they're also very expensive! If you're not going to be gaming with it, it's probably overkill. Look into getting something with a powerful CPU, and at least 4GB of RAM , but without the unnecessary gingerbread and price of a computer built for gaming.

Video cards are for calculating and drawing 3D graphics. You don't need a mega good one for editing and playing videos - that is handled by the CPU.
