I'm using MPEG Video Wizard DVD in conjunction with Powerdirector. For MPEG Video Wizard DVD, I like its powerful editing function (such as auto commercial detective, effects and filters, a/v sync solution, convert format and much much more ) combines with the DVD authoring capability, that I think it's the best choice for intermediate-level users. The only con. is that it cannot capture videos, so I use Powerdirector as my capture software, its UI looks great, as well as its video effects.

Which Camcorder & video editing software should I buy?

DDrew

I need a new camcorder for making movies and uploading them to the internet - I don't know whether to buy a DV or a hard drive based camcorder? I heard a lot of benefits to the hard drive based like you never have to convert the file - but I also hear it is harder to edit and to find editing software for - on the DV end I hear the quality is better, but it uploads to your computer in real time which sucks - but it is the easiest to edit???? please help!

Answer
My experience is with MiniDV camcorders and I would typically use a fire-wire 1394 cable to download video from my camcorder to my PC. This wasn't always problem free.. it would lose a couple frames every once in awhile.. but it worked most of the time.

My preferred software (not sure if you can still buy it anywhere) is Video Factory 2.0 (Sonic Foundry). Of all of the video editting software in the $50 price range, this one beats them all.

Now, there is another thing to keep in mind. When you download the video from your camera (in real time) the software will typically save the video uncompressed (AVI file usually). So, uncompressed video is large and will need to be compressed when you create an MPG video. It's time consuming and hard drive consuming.. but it seems to work just fine.

My last comment would be that for all of the reasons stated above, I would almost prefer to try out a hard drive based camcorder. Not speaking from experience, but the less mechanical parts (i.e. the MiniDV tape) the more reliable you would assume the camera would be.

Also, keep in mind that Windows XP typically comes with basic video editting software. It's not the greatest software but the price is right.

Good Luck!

I would like to know what is the best free video editing software and bought software is. I'm in the 100 dollar range. I'm SICK of movie-maker (it's a hunk of junk even when used properly. unless you're making a simple collage or something.) I guess I'm really asking what the best movie making software is. But a video editor (like to crop and cut in images and such) would be great too.

Answer
I asked the same question about a week ago
So far I've tried:
Sony Veags=good but complicated
CyberLink Power Director=excellent still trying
Corel Video Director=excellent but froze up a few times..
Adobe Premier = Excellent but complicated

I've downloaded the free trial of pinnacle and i'm trying that one right now
they all cost under $100 or around
and i've used mostly this site called TopTen Reviews (link below)
All in all I have to say CyberLInk Power Director is pretty impresive although I haven't tried Pinnacle just yet....Hope That help...Ren

What video editing software should I buy?

Yo Yo 5522

I bought a GoPro Hero video camera last year and have a bunch of skiing video that I would like to make a short movie out of. This is just for fun, but I don't want the movie to look like crap. Currently all my video clips have been collecting metaphorical dust for a year and I want to make good use of them. I really know nothing about video editing software. Is there anything that is under $80, somewhat easy to use, and has a ton of cool features? Something sort of like iMovie but for a PC.

Answer
When it comes to video editing, "cool features" and "easy to use" are mutually exclusive. If you have one, you're not going to have the other. Keep your eyes on the prize and accept the fact that if you want cool features, you're going to have to spend some time hiking up the old learning curve.

Also, with GoPro videos, keep MPEG StreamClip in mind. It's what those "in the know" use to convert GoPro clips.

Just about all software is on sale right now and will be on sale through December.

Power Director has a number of different editions to choose from.

Corel's Video Studio Pro Ultimate is on sale (for the same price I paid for the upgrade version last summer:-( This is a huge program that includes a number of high-end plugins, including Boris Graffiti that you can use to make 3D animated titles and captions and ProDad's Vitascene, a workspace with a ton of specialized effects with multiple presets and oodles of controls. The program itself comes with a lot of transitions and effects the majority of which can be customized and key framed.

It's being used in Pinnacle Studio Ultimate, another editor you might consider - although it doesn't see to be on sale right now. Check Best Buy online. Best Buy has it in-store and sometimes has it marked down.

And please don't forget that you've got to have a computer that can handle a good video editor. All editors work best with at least 6 Gbs of RAM and a multi-core processor and a hard drive that can speedily move large amounts of data around without studdering and lagging. Most computers can handle the graphics - phew!
