Well, if you are looking for a video editing software, I would suggest adobe premiere Pro, avid, apple final cut and sony vegas. But these are professional grade editing softwares. windows XP has a built in software for editing video, look it up at your list of softwares and it is called Windows movie maker, if yer using an Apple, it usually comes with imovie. Also, most third party DVD roms are bundled with decent editing softwares which will fit the need of a video editing enthusiast.

Avidemux is free, open source, and extremely powerful video editing software that can handle just about any type of format, size, etc... I've used it for years now to convert videos for use on youtube, converting DVD's for play on my tablet, etc...

Another good free one that is very simple to use is Hampster video converter. Both are available from CNET at www.download.com
