I am currently searching to buy a video editing software and wanted to know what the best one to buy was.
Answer
Asd someone pointed out, it would help to know your budget and OS. "Best" is a subjective term. It's like asking what the best car is. There is no consensus answer and you will find fanboys of many products swearing what they like is best. Part of what determines what is best for YOU is what exactly you would be using it for. If you are going to post clips of you playing with your dog on Youtube, investing in Avid Media Composer with a Da Vinci Resolve for Color Correction software and hardware controllers would be downright silly. On thre other hand, if you have a 100 million dollar budget and plan on making the next 3d blockbuster, steering you towards iMovie would be just as ridiculous. Since you did not specify OS, I'm going to suggest you start by downloading a trial of something cross-platform:
http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere-elements.html
http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere.html
Similar programs but the latter is hundreds of dollars more and has more features. Since you may never use these extra features, the former may suit your needs.
There are many other options and I am no way claiming these are the best. For your platform, I would suggest downloading trial versions of other programs as well. Final Cut and Imovie are popular Mac only options and Sony Vegas Studio and Pro are popular Windows options.
If budget is an issue, several of the best editors in the business swear by lightworks (Movies like Hugo, the Departed and the Kings Speech were edited with lightworks) and it is available free:

What is the best video editing software for Windows Vista, similar to iMovie?
JFo
I currently lack the funds to buy a mac, nor would I really want to if I had the money, but I love iMovie. I was wondering if there was anything close to it for windows. If not, what are some good software titles for windows.
Thanks!
