What is a good program to edit mpeg and AvI files?

I have some mpeg and would like to join them as 'one' file and also remove some scenes from some.
whats a good program for that??

Movies that have an extension of .AVI. = edit them with Windows Movie Maker 2. That program is a part of Windows XP. It has adjustments for brightness, hue and other features. To find it, click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>> Entertainment>>Windows Movie Maker. I'm looking for a good video editing program that supports all major formats (particularly avi or divx) and is a bit more reliable then WMA and more sophisticated.

Yes I'm sure I don't want WMA. Don't suggest it.
