I need to edit some videos, but my computer is too slow to run Vegas well. What else can I use to edit videos that will run well?

I have an avi file that is very heavy i have no issue with video quality but i want the file size should be low with good video quality. So kindly suggest me the best video format that i could also burn the file in CD and play it in my DVD room.
