Or should I invest in a newer MacBook Pro? If so, any suggestion?
It is a gift for someone. They are set on getting a MacBook so they can familiarize themselves with the apple system and use learn to use Final Cut.
This model is discontinued so the laptop will be bought as it. Unless you can upgrade the ram by bringing it in to the store? (I'm not very knowledgable in this field)

Answer
It's so-so, RAM is low

If you aren't required to use Apple software, you could buy a Windows 7/8 laptop for $800 that will perform the same or better than a $1600 Mac

EDIT: As far as the RAM goes, you'd have to Google the exact model specs (or logon to crucial.com and run their free scan). Most laptop models that come with 4 GB of RAM are upgradeable to 8, but some aren't

What is a good laptop for video editing?

I am a film student, edit videos all of the time on my laptop. But my laptop isn't meant for editing, barely gets the job done at times. Saving up some money now and looking to get a new laptop. I need a laptop with 8GB of RAM, around 600GB hard drive, good graphics card and either i5 or i7 processor. Hoping to pay anywhere from $700 to in the early $1000. I've been looking, and I've found a couple Asus models I like, but I'm still looking and asking around. If anyone knows of a laptop, or even a brand that is reliable for video editing and some video games as well, I'd really appreciate any assistance very much. Also, if anyone can convince me to use a Mac, try, 'cause I'm kind of starting to like the sound of a Mac. Just hard because I've always used Windows. Thank you!!

Dell Inspiron 17R N7010 17 Laptop i5-460M 4GB 500GB HD.The computer comes with a Getting Started type of manual that's quite thorough for that purpose. There is no expanded user manual, but there is a repair manual available online. The machine is 64-bit operating system capable, but how well that works, depends upon implementation. The laptop has a port for an analog monitor. It also has an HDMI port for direct, external display. This computer has a simple method to switch displays between a TV/amplifier/receiver/projector, computer, or both. For full HDMI resolution you need to switch to projection eg TV only. The 17" maximum screen resolution is 1600 x 900 and restricts the size when simultaneously sending a signal to its screen and the TV.
