How do i convert my video files to upload onto youtube?

i have multiple videos that i want to upload onto youtube.. but when i try to, it says its unable to convert the video file. one of the videos was edited from windows movie maker, which i guess has the wrong video file type for youtube. another one i brought from my school on a dvd and again says the same thing. if anyone knows how to do this could you like type step by step? thank you soo much!
