I currently am using a Dell XPS 3.6 ghz, 1GB RAM, 250GB HD running a consumer version of Avid called Pinnacle Studio (v10 Plus). Problem is this is my "everything" computer (Internet, MP3s, documents, spreadsheets) so it bogs down when I try to do relatively simple video editing projects. I want a dedicated, reliable, powerful yet somewhat inexpensive system that has a small footprint. Considering a MacBook with Final Cut Pro but that could get a bit pricey.

Answer
You may want to re-consider using a laptop for that task. Usually laptops can't handle huge video/image file editing, you may want to use a desktop. The reason being is that desktops can handle more power. Don't go with a brand name computer, buy a clone computer that is upgradable. You can select every peripheral at a time, this way you an optimize every component. You do need to go with brand name parts, such as Intel, WesterDigital, ATI and so on. Let me know how it goes. zermenoj@yahoo.com

Would upgrading from 3gb of ram to 6gb of ram speed up my computer?

joey

I have a dell n5030 laptop
dual core pentium processor 2.3ghz
3gb ddr3 ram
320gb hdd
64bit windows 7

I do a lot of multitasking and stuff. Things that my computer doesn't really like to do is: itunes (have 15 + gb of music), video and audio encoding, video and audio editing, and hd video.

I also already know how to change the ram

Answer
Crucial.com will scan your computer and tell you what generation, speed, number of sticks, and amount of RAM you have. It will also tell you what the fastest speed, number of sticks, and amount of RAM will max out your computer (laptops usually have two slots - desktops may have four or more). It will give you a price on a kit set up to max out your computer.

Yes, 6gb will be faster than 3 gb (took mine from 2 to 6 and it is faster - it could go up to 8, but taking two laptops up to 8 gb is expensive!).
