Good and cheap home video editing software?

MFB

I need to buy a simple and cheap home movie editing program to edit the little films I take with my digital camera and format them for DVD. Does anyone have suggestions?

Answer
Video editing software that adds music and narrations. These programs can link together short video clips. One warning: Video editing demands a lot of computer resourcesâeach hour of video requires 13 gigabytes of hard drive space. You will need at least 512 megabytes of RAM. Anything less will slow down your computer considerably.

1. Windows Movie Maker. If you have Windows XP, you should have Windows Movie Maker 2 (Windows XP only). Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Windows Movie Maker. If you donât find it, you can download it from Microsoft's Web site (www.microsoft.com). Microsoftâs Web site offers a number of tutorials.

You can assemble clips using the storyboard view. This allows you to drag and drop clips into little boxes at the bottom of your screen (you can change the order of these boxes, too). When you find the order you like, you can add over 50 transitions (fades, dissolves, wipes, etc.) that will link your clips together.

Video effects will slow down, speed up or blur your video. Thereâs even an effect that can turn portions of your video into a watercolor painting.

The timeline view allows you to add music, titles or narration.

2. Avid Free DV (www.avid.com/freedv, Windows XP; Mac OS X 10.4.2 or later) offers a fraction of Avidâs other (and costly) video-editing programs. But it does have some of the features of the full version of Avid.

There are over a dozen free video tutorials on Avidâs Web site.

Avid Free DV allows you to trim video, edit audio and create titles. Its timeline utilizes two video and two audio tracks and 16 video effects.

3. VirtualDub (www.virtualdub.org; Windows 95 and later)is a very fast, full-featured program.

The video-editing capabilities are limited, but it allows you to trim video and adjust audio. VirtualDub is known for its filters: adjust the brightness; sharpen the picture; blur clips together; rotate pictures; etc. Then you can view the before effects and after effects in the two windowsâhere you can cancel the filter effects.

For the more advanced there is:
Adobe www.adobe.com
Pinnacle www.pinnaclesys.com
Ulead www.ulead.com
Cost: less than $100.

Where To Download Free Video Editing Program Or Software?

Cody B

Where can I Download a decent video editing Program for free? Not free trials of vegas, free full programs or software please. Thanks.

Answer
Photobucket is a great web based and FREE editing tools. The software behind it comes from Adobe who make some of the best commercial ($$$) photo and video editors. Also check out Jaycut which allows you to export and save your videos! If you need/want more features downloading VideoSpin, VideoPad or VideoThang are great options. Still free, but you have to download the software. For under $100 you can buy Adobe Premiere Elements.

There is also new freeware version of Windows Movie Maker that works on Windows Vista, XP and even Windows 7. Microsoft has added and deleted features from each version and this version has all the features from each version plus some extras.

Know a free video editing software for windows xp/vista?

ciarayoo;

Soo, my camera records videos in mp4 format. I'd love to edit them in Windows Movie Maker, only thing wrong is that WMM doesn't let you edit mp4 videos. FML.

I refuse to pay for a video editing software, and so i'm looking for anything that is free, and that if i download it, it won't give me virus'. Please don't send converting site links to me because none of them truly work..they all have to have some 'codec'.... which means it's a load of bull.

Please and thank you.<3

Whats the best video editing software?

kevcim06

I am getting back in to video editing and I want to get new software. I have used Adobe premiere in the past but I recently heard of Avid Xpress Pro. Does any one know which is better?

Also, Im in college and I can get the cheaper student versions of both programs. Avid has an academic version of their software, is that the same as the regular version?

Thanks

Answer
I agree that Avid is the best. If you are just editing recitals and wedding Adobe is fine. If you look at Adobe's website, they show TV commercials done with CS3. If you want to go "Hollywood", you need AVID for sure. I recently saw Avid Xpress Pro for $50.00 on one of the academic software websites. BUY THAT! Avid let's you tweak every detail. Final Cut Pro is almost like comparing Apples to Apples, but there are a few details that you still cannot tweak in FCP.

Avid comes with a really cool 3D Animation tool and has basic text creation. FCP comes with a really cool text effects tool called Motion and no 3D. I like Apples DVD authoring tool the best. If you require very nice movie introduction text, you should check out FCP. All of the programs let you buy third party applications for text and 3D.

Buy them both while you are a student. I just bought CS3, because I was in the middle of a project in Premiere 1.5. I did not want to go through the Avid learning curve if there is one.

If I was not in a hurry to finish the project, I would have bought Avid without question.

BTW.. I just searched for the $50.00 software. I can't find it. There is a $50.00 rebate right now.

I have a french project and I am making a music video. I am recording one video of me and a band playing the song, and another video of people dancing to the song. Is there a way I can edit the video so that the two videos play side by side, or they switch off continuously?
please please please help, it is due in 2 weeks.

Answer
Windows video editing software:
Free download the trial version: Adobe After Effects
http://www.brothersoft.com/adobe-after-effects-download-76859.html
Sony Vegas:
http://www.brothersoft.com/vegas-pro-62209.html
You'd better get a total video converter. If you can't import some special video formats into the video editing software, directly change the format with this video converter.

Help with choosing a laptop and video editing program?

chap

I would like to edit non-hd video in some program like Premeire elements, Cyberlink power director, sony vegas, or something else in this catagory. I need some recommendations in choosing a laptop and editing program. Is $550 enough for the laptop?

What I'm aiming for:
I would like to buy a good tutorial book, like a dummy's guide, on the editing program.
Laptop should be capable to run program smoothly.
Editing program should be stable.
Would this be good?
DELL Inspiron M5030 (iM5030-2800B3D) Notebook
AMD Athlon II Dual-Core P360(2.30GHz)
4GB Memory DDR3 1333
ATI Radeon HD 4250

Answer
It has an AMD processor & only a Class 3 ATI shared graphics chip which is like free, so don't expect much from it for graphics performance. On my desktop, I have NERO photo/video editor before w/c is very easy to learn & use.

$500 is not enough. My suggestion, just save up your money for now & then when you have saved up, on Black Friday or for Christmas buy one that you wont need to upgrade in the long run.

Just remember these: The 1st thing you should look for on the computer surface just below the keyboard is A LOGO STICKER for NVIDIA or ATI MOBILITY RADEON. This SHOWS that the laptop has A DEDICATED GRAPHICS CARD (for AutoCAD & Adobe Photoshop). Diablo III, the game I would love most to play runs on 3D graphics & is rumored to need at least 1GB GRAPHICS MEMORY (lower graphics memory = CHEAPER laptop price),
so always check the system requirement specs on the game's box (ex. SIMS 3; see if your laptop meets all the requirements).
For gamers, make sure the GRAPHICS CARD on the laptop IS ONLY from the HIGH END or MIDRANGE:
click the link: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
Next important aspect is the RAM (memory). If you're in designing & you need to run applications like AutoCAD or softwares for editing photos & videos, just make sure that the laptop has AT LEAST 2GB DDR2 RAM modules in it (HIGHER IS BETTER; DDR3 & DDR5 are faster & newer types of memory modules that came out).

If you're a lil' bit low on budget, get the next best thing. The msi GE620-021 15.6" Gaming Notebook also features a 2nd Generation Intel Core i7 Processor 2630QM & 8GB DDR3 RAM, just 640GB HDD, but only a Class 2, 1GB NVIDIA GT540M dedicated graphics card that can also handle DirectX 11 effects from FRYS.com (SKU#: 6539123).
The ASUS N53SV-XR1 is $150 cheaper, but comes w/ ONLY 4GB of memory.
click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152258

Playing for long hours? Get a COOLER MASTER U2 Notebook Cooler w/c has dual purposes. Cool thing about it is, you can position the fans on the right spot for better ventialation. When travelling, detach the easily detacheable dual fan, then use the aluminum frame as a protection for your laptop's screen when inside the bag. I got mine from MicroCenter.com for $15, 48% cheaper than the regular $25 tag (FRYS.com SKU#: 6344931).
watch the video: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997730

If you're looking for an affordable, not so big, yet best in performance gaming laptop,
LOOK NO FURTHER.
Like me, get the MSI GT680R 15.6"-full HD GAMING NOTEBOOK which comes with the 2nd Generation Core i7 Processor 2630QM, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB Hard Disk Drive (2 x 500GB 7200rpm SATA HDD) & a powerful Class 1, 1.5GB NVIDIA GTX460M DDR5 dedicated graphics card that can handle DirectX 11 enhancing the 3D detail effects from FRYS.com (SKU#: 6547393).
I got the chance to use the laptop first hand at the FRYS store. I came back to check out the laptop every hour for 6 hrs & found out that the air from the vent of the laptop remained cool compared to any other laptops on display there, meaning this laptop has proper heat management, that means this laptop can handle long hours of gruelling play. Now, I'm all stewed up saving to buy this b4 Blizzard releases Diablo 3.
The MSI GT680R 15.6" Gaming Notebook w/ the Intel® Core⢠i-7 retails for $1,499.99 (+ tax & other sur-charges; www.FRYS.com). I chose to pay more to have the newest technology so that I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING OUTDATED WITHIN THE NEXT 11 YRS.
click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152239

Additional info, read on:
FYI: I always tell my customers, a laptop's battery is similar to a cell phone's. You charge it when it's depleted & you unplug the adapter when it is already fully charge (this will prevent the battery from getting overcharged & extend the life of the battery). So for less hassle, I always advice my customers to just remove the battery if they plan to use the computer for long hours straight (more than 1 hour) and just run it on AC power alone so as not to overcharge it & shorten the battery life.
ONLY USE THE BATTERY FOR PORTABILITY, if you're on a trip, at McDonalds or Starbucks.
For chargers, make sure you don't stretch out the cable too much that the one by the power jack that you plug into the side of the computer gets bent. Make sure this part is always straight or else the copper wires inside will break & soon you'll have the problem of the charger not working anymore like what happened to some of my callers.

Free video editing software?

Bartosz

I have windows 8 and i a couple of months ago have started editing videos for magic/ cardistry videos. The problem is, that I have been using windows movie maker, because it is simple. I want something free, but a little more difficult to get used to because of the special effects (which obviously I want to learn to use). I cant find anything good right now, but maybe you guys know of some good ones. And by free i don't mean free trail.

Answer
Video Editing:

Lightworks; free alternative to Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas.
http://lwks.com

Lightworks has been used in the movie industry for more than 20 years. Lightworks also has the fastest workflow in the industry.

Lightworks used to cost more than $1,000, but now Lightworks Pro costs $60/year and you can download a free version from their website.

Sony Vegas costs $600 and that's the same price as using Lightworks Pro for 10 years.

Editors using Lightworks have produced numerous internationally renowned and Oscar and Emmy award-winning feature films and television programs, including The King's Speech, The Departed, Mission Impossible, Braveheart, and Pulp Fiction.

And yes! Lightworks is FREE if you don't need pro video codecs and you can use the free version as long as you want.

Color Grading:

Use color grading to make the video "pop to life", to change the mood, or to make it look more like a movie or TV show.

DaVinci Resolve is the best color grading software in the industry.
http://blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve

You can download a FREE version of DaVinci Resolve from their website.

3D Animation and Visual Effects:

Blender; free alternative to Maya and After Effects.
http://blender.org

Blender has a complete VFX pipeline in one single software package. Blender has tools for modeling, sculpting, rigging, animation, rotoscoping, chroma keying (green screen), motion tracking, smoke, fire, and fluid simulation, particles, destruction, physics, color grading, node compositing, and video editing.

After Effects uses "layer-based" compositing. Blender uses "node-based" compositing similar to Nuke; used in the movie industry http://thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke

Blender has more advanced features but After Effects is easier to use.

The easiest and most detailed tutorial on how to use Blender is Neal Hirsig's tutorial at http://gryllus.net/Blender/3D.html

Blender is 100% free with full functionality, no adware, no spyware, and no viruses, and you're allowed to use Blender in any production without having to pay for anything.

how do i make youtube video?

gajan

hey, i needed help with making video and uploading them to youtube. I know how to upload it but i need to know what can i use to make videos with (i will be making video on my computer).

I want something like hypercam or something that can make good videos and wont slow my computer down (in other word i want something that is not lot of memory)

Thanks

Answer
There are many options for making a video to upload to Youtube. An excellent free video capture program that records whatever you are showing on your desktop which can be used for recording a Powerpoint presentation of photos can be found at www.jing.com.

Another great free screen recording software is www.camstudio.org that allows you to upload your audio track produced with audacity or other audio recording tool and sync it with the movie your produced.

I use a couple of paid video editing tools. Video Scrip Spinner will do some amazing video transitions to your selection of music. You can set it to randomize the photos to produce a unique video each time you use it.

Here is a video made with Video Script Spinner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wW9a17eo3VE (Taylor Swift Photo Collection)

Audio Swap was used within Youtube for free music background, but the program will teach you how to add audio tracks from various sources.

How Do you upload A high quality video on Youtube using Vegas 7.0 as the video editing software?

Marcus C

Could you give me a link or short description

Answer
For best video quality, use the following settings:

mpeg4 or wmv
30 FPS
mp3 sound
640 by 480 resolution

--For best editing....

use windows movie maker (included in your windows machine)... it can help you make beautiful slideshow or video clip(e.g. mixing your songs with pictures/video/lyric/etc).... then save it as video file such as wmv file format... finally upload.

or .. Just get those clips you want , save & convert them, and then mix/match with pix/sound/etc using windows movie maker to create new masterpieces....

this will help you.... Use 'zillatube'. This is the easiest (and also the fastest) way.

Zillatube produces mpg/mp3 formats from youtube that are compatible with windows movie maker(or media player), and more.

It is very easy to download and convert videos. Then edit those converted mp3/mpg videos with windows movie maker... save your file as wmv and then upload.

It works very well....just google search for "zillatube"

Or perhaps someone can suggest something else?
I'm not trying to make super videos like- with explosions or anything, just want a good, fairly price editor with lots of sounds, transactions, and other stuff. Hopefully something under 100$ as well. So what should I get? I have vista, and movie maker isn't good enough.

Recommend 17 inch laptop for multimedia?

z z z z

I actually wanted to buy MSI GS70 Stealth as it is very light weight and the screen is 17 inch.

However the gpu differ from MSI workstation category. The workstation carries the Nvidia Quadro. The GS70 carries the 765m.

Would the GS70 able to perform comparable to the Nvidia quadro? Sorry I am not good in specification.

Is the 1920x1080 res for GS70 good for graphic editing? Overall I feel the Macbook pro has the best resolution but the price is way costly.

I like the GS70 for its design - keyboard, sleek and slim. It is also a good gaming laptop I assume, since it is a gaming laptop.

Is there other recommendation that would do great for graphic editing? What I mean is good color contrast, brightness etc.

The Macbook pro is way too costly for me...

Let me list again the thing I would do with the laptop...
-Watch Video
-Graphic Editing (Want good color contrast and brightness)
-Capable of semi-high setting for gaming
-Able perform well with multi programs open

Thus overall, I want to used it as my long term primary "PC".

Answer
I recommend Dell Inspiron 17 i17RM-2419 SLV for that. It has large 17.3 inch screen and i5 processor, you can also play games which are not demanding but overall performance is good. You can see its details in this review:

http://whatlaptop.org/dell-inspiron-17-i17rm-2419slv-17-3-inch-laptop-review

Its DELL so its solid and reliable, screen is bright and clear too. You are going to watch movies so it has an Optical drive for that if you use DVD. Hope this answer help.

Are 17 inch laptops to big to carry around?

Mike G

The laptop I want is 17 inch, is that to big for a college student?

Answer
Depends on what you're using it for. If its just for writing papers and things and carrying around in class, I would go for a smaller size, such as a 13' macbook. If you're going to use it for designing, video editing, or going to spend extensive amounts of time on the computer, I'd go with the 17' macbook pro.
Hope it all goes well!

Open source video editing software with lossless codec?

W S

I typically use open source Blender3D's VSE with an AVI wrapper, but the h.264 lossless option in it seems to render me a black screen. I finally get to share one of my little video's on a theater screen and I'd love to make it as sharp as possible, it's 1920x1080, but looks crap against any RED footage so would love to squeeze out any extra bits if I can. Prefer open source alternative, but if Premiere or Avid are the only options I'll bite the bullet and purchase. Thanks for your time. -Will

Answer
Hi, Will.
In my understanding, technically, the so-called "lossless" mode of H.264 is actually lossy. Truly lossless codecs, such as Lagarith, HuffYUV, Camtasia, CamStudio, CorePNG, and the like, while great for encoding and storing intermediates, would be too heavy for presentation playback (even on a fairly capable machine), not to mention the enormity of the file sizes.
To make sure I understood correctly: Your original footage, which is .r3d files shot on a RED camera, drops in quality after converting to h.264, correct? Exactly in what form does the "crappiness" manifest, macro-blocking, blurriness, change in contrast, etc?
Also, the availability of a codec is not dependent on the editing software, if it is installed on your system. If your exporter supports the AVI wrapper, youâll have the option to encode using any of the compatible codecs available on your system.
As for the software, I would strongly recommend Premiere Pro, but if itâs not within your budgetary grasp, thereâs also a free (closed-source) version of an industry-standard editor called LightWorks. You're on Windows, right?
I may be able to better help if you could respond with some clarification.

Good luck.

What are some good freeware/ open source video editing software?

Jonathan D

What I want to do is have two different videos playing simultaneously in one video... kinda like brady bunch has 8 people on screen at once in their opening.

as far as i know, windows movie maker cannot do this.
hey now, avs is very unstable.

i have a 1000 dollar budget thats all i can afford to spend as a total (including tax/ warranty). i need something that would be good for editing movies/videos and that has a built in webcam and microphone. any help would be good

Answer
Video editing is a rather tough requirement and that 1000 budget is well a bit optimistic if you really plan to do much of that type of work.

For viedo due to the large files involved most editing sytems are setup to stream from one hard drive to another. For a laptop this would mean a 17" with dual hard drive bays that you would populate with two 7200 rpm hard drives of 320 gigs each.

Video editing also needs as much CPu as you can give it. A 2.6 Ghz CPU wouldn't be the overkill it usually is for everything else...

One excellent laptop to consider would be a Dell XPS M1730 with dual 7200 rpm hard drives and as much CPU as you can afford...

But if you just want to play around, then any laptop that fits the following considerations should work:

First, brand is not important. Only the components you are getting (or more likely not getting) for the price.

For example, this unit at BestBuy is an excellent low cost find.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8907043&productCategoryId=abcat0502003&type=product&id=1213046783376

It is amazingly hard to find such a lower priced laptop with dedicated graphics and a 7200 rpm hard drive.

The 7200 rpm drive will make a huge difference to the overall feel of your laptop

So simply stated, here are the basic level requirements for any decent responsive laptop:

1. any dual core CPU

2. 4 gigs RAM becuase it's so cheap now, it is crazy to get less

3. any 7200 rpm hard drive if you want any kind of responsive feeling to your laptop. All laptops with 5400 rpm hard drives feel really sluggish..

4. any dedicated graphics chip if you want any kind of system stability

Start with those basic specs and see what else you might need such as screen resolution of 1920x1200 and other possible extra features.

The brand mostly doesn't matter, only the components inside the laptop and what you have to pay for them. Two notable exceptions at two ends of the value spectrum are Macbooks which give you low end components for a high price and Alienware which gives you really goog components and really good "under the hood" construction.

Run away screaming from any laptop with Intel 3100 integrated chipset graphics in it or other simlilar chips using "shared memory"

This is a good reference to see where you chip compares to others:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

Some lower cost laptops that can meet the above 4 specs are Dell Studio 15 and Dell Studio 17

Some medium cost higher quality models are any Dell XPS.

Highest quality models that can meet the spec are any Alienware.

Good laptops for video editing/media students?

~

Hi, so I'm a media student and we seem to be doing a lot of editing and since my laptop is breaking (it's 3 years old) it's time to get a new one but I want one that's going to good enough for me to be able to do my work. I don't really know much about computers so if you're going into detail please make it simple!
Right now I have a Sony Vaio not that it's important

So which laptops are good for what I need it for?

Answer
Hello.

According to your requirements, you'd need a laptop that could outrun the power intensive jobs.
Apple MacBook Pro MD101LL/A 13.3-Inch Laptop is the answer that would bring you style and status in addition.
Here are the main specs

2.5 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5 processor
4 GB DDR3 RAM; 500 GB Hard Drive
13.3 inch LED-backlit display, 1280-by-800 resolution
Intel HD Graphics 4000
Mac OS X v10.7 Lion, 7 Hour Battery Life

Consider these reviews on video, this would help you analyze this option better.

http://www.amazon.com/review/R1HSLOPERWGAVY/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B007470SMM&nodeID=&linkCode=&tag=aajema-20

For something really affordable and good,
Consider Toshiba Satellite S855D-S5253 15.6-Inch Laptop

What are some cheap laptops for great for video editing?

Mark

Here is the thing. I want to create gaming videos for pc and console. I plan on recording games for the pc on another computer and having this one be the editor. I want the laptop to be able to run sony vegas edits ranging from 15 minutes to an hour and I want it able to capture gameplay along with 2 different streams of audio at the same time. I would prefer if it didn't cost more than $460 and obviously it needs to have at least 4 gigs of ram. Any other specs for the laptop don't matter. I will get an external hard drive separate so I can transfer videos easier and so when I capture it puts less stress on the device.

Answer
Your described use and "cheap laptop" won't work. Video editing makes heavy use of a graphics card, and any laptop with a dedicated graphics card won't be very cheap. Furthermore, if the computer's supposed to handle two streams of audio, perhaps run a game, and capture gameplay at the same time, we're talking some heavy multitasking. At least an i5, perhaps even more. And perhaps a dedicated (usb) sound card as well.

So... Cheap laptop? No. Not gonna happen.

You didn't say anything on size and weight, so...

Something like this, at least: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834216457

And probably more like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152368

Video Editing Laptop?

RiverEdits

I use Sony Vegas Pro, Cinema 4D, & Adobe After Effects, but my laptop(Sony Vaio) lags & is really slow when I'm editing. What are the fastest laptops for video editing? Ones that won't lag AT ALL. List some for me? I don't want a Macbook, so don't list that, thanks.

Answer
The fastest laptop for video editing is the one with the fastest processor. You can only render video as fast as your processor can handle it. RAM or what video card...that doesn't have anything to do with the speed of rendering.

Cyberlink Powerdirector 8? Other video editing software?

ily<3

I have never bought video editing software but I've been looking up different kinds. And as of right now I am leaning towards buying Cyberlink Powerdirector 8. Any suggestions if i should get this or get a different kind? I am looking for software that has a good amount of effects including fast motion, slow motion, and making your film go backwards. I don't necessarily need software that is for beginners, being that i have used some free video editing programs before and I am good with computers, but i don't want to spend too much money. Also, I have a Toshiba laptop. Thanks...any comments is appreciated!
Also what is the difference in buying the box and the download?

Answer
Hey ily<3,

I would recommend trakAxPC Pro. It's aimed at the novice user but has all the features of a professional software.

It's a really good and user-friendly video editing software which allows you to edit and mix any combination of audio, video and photos. It also has loads of features like effects, text, split screen, reverse, slow-motion etc, plus you can upload your video directly to YouTube through the application. There's a free lite version and a Pro (paid) version available

You can check it out here: http://www.trakax.com/software/pc/

Hope this help

What kind of video editing laptop should i get?

Steven T

I will be going to college for video making. What kind of laptop would be best and what should i have on it? Mac or PC? advantages, disadvantages, and the best computers for each

Answer
PC,
Laptop: Toshiba http://explore.toshiba.com/laptops/qosmio/G50 Dell XPS, or Sony.

I would then download Ubuntu and make the laptop a dual boot and install Cinelerra, Kino, Lives, Pitivi, Blender, Inscape, Scribus all for free.

I would stay away from a mac for the following reasons...

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. They use a lot of the same parts as PCs. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Today, Macs use the same hardware as PCs. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think.. Look below.

WINDOWS ADVANTAGES:

Aprox 90% of the market is Windows. Most PCs include windows already pre-installed.
1) There are a number of websites that still require Internet Explorer to view and IE for Mac Stinks (it is really ies4osx which is the Windows IE version running really buggy on OS X and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows, too many problems with it).
2) More supported peripherals (printers and other things you hook into the computer) on Windows.
4) If you like the Dock on OS X (Mac) google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.

I Would also install Avira AntiVir, Avast, Comodo Firewall on the Vista since there are free versions.

LINUX ADVANTAGES:

1) Install Linux, and then get tons of stuff for free. Updates done, etc.. Linux is very easy and has tons of software that will be updated automatically. (Checking a checkbox in either two ways to install (Add/Remove or Synaptic Package Manager), search for something I want, check a box and click apply)
2) If you like the effects on a Macintosh go yahoo or google COMPIZ FUSION. It can do just about any cool effect a Mac can do and more...
3) If you like the Dock on OS X (Mac) google/yahoo Cairo Dock, avant window navigator.
4) Linux is MORE SECURE. I surf the internet and can even run some windows programs on Linux.

LINUX OS
If you are worried about viruses, spyware, security, Try Linux (it is free), I have included some information about Linux and links so you are not lost if you decide to try it.

Easily turn your system into a Dual booting computer with Linux, fast, safe and secure, easy to use (contrary to belief). You then get the best of both worlds (Windows with all of its supported products, freely go online without the worry)

My Recommendation would be either Ubuntu (Most popular and well supported linux), Kubuntu (KDE version of Ubuntu),
Freespire (has all windows codecs for watching videos, dvds out of the box),
PCLINUXOS (very nice Linux, easy to use and polished),
There are so many good versions of linux besides these.

PLEASE NOTE: In linux there are many forms of Windows Environments, the two main ones are KDE (K Desktop) and GNOME. Ubuntu uses GNOME, KUBUNTU is a KDE version of Ubuntu, PCLINUXOS, Freespire use KDE... The differences in the window environments (DESKTOPS) control how you configure, open close the windows, the appearances of the windows... linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting helps with printer support. ScreenCasts.ubuntu.com shows video and non-video help with learning to work with Ubuntu.

There are many good Linux distributions for different reasons, distrowatch.com, polishlinux.org, desktoplinux.com
are good websites for overall understanding linux.

Installing Linux in general is very simple and much more secure than OS X(Macintosh) and free.
Also, most Linux distributions have a LiveCD which means you can try without installing...
UBUNTU, KUBUNTU, FREESPIRE, PCLINUXOS, etc.. all have live CDS.
All you have to do is..
A) to download .iso file off the internet from the Linux website
B) burn the .iso file to a CD or DVD (Make sure your burning software can burn an ISO or get InfraRecorder http://infrarecorder.org/)
C) restart the computer with the CD in the drive
D) As computer is restarting, press on F12 Key a bunch of times to get a boot menu
E) Select the option to boot from CD or DVD.

Click on this link and follow instructions up to the point of "Once the system has started up...", (the rest is how to backup windows) for an easy picture guide for steps A-E above http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/
For easy instructions on setting up Dual Boot http://apcmag.com/how_to_dual_boot_windows_xp_and_linux_xp_installed_first.htm

ANOTHER QUICK NOTE: People have been able to run OS X on a PC since the PC and Mac use the same hardware. This is not legal and I would not recommend it for security and legal reasons

But, I have included a link to show you, purpose is to show that there is nothing special about the MAC.

A)Price...
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

*****************(LAPTOP)
Dell Inspiron Laptop $849 dropped to $799
15" Screen
CPU: (upgrade to) 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100
Memory: 3GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Hard Drive: 320GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Optical Drive: Blu-ray Disc Combo (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM) - WRITES DVDS,CDS, READS Blue-Ray Disks

Macbook $1349 just dropped to $1224
13" Screen (SMALLER)
CPU: 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (SAME)
Graphics: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 (SAME)
Memory: (upgrade to) 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM (LESS RAM)
Hard Drive (upgrade to) 250GBSerial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (SMALLER HARD DRIVE)
Optical Drive: (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) - (Writes CDs, DVDs, cannot read Blue-Ray) (WORSE AND 1/2 SPEED)

****************(DESKTOP)

PLEASE NOTE: I am comparing Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you decide that you must have an all-in one. The Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you upgrade the Imac to try to match. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they must make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: (Right Now) Specs Below costs $809
CPU: 2.4 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: 3GB Ram
HARD DRIVE: 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16x DVD/CD Read/Writer
GRAPHICS: (upgrade to ) ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO 128MB

The Best Deal Mac is not the Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup... IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1400)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: (upgrade to) 2GB Ram (LESS RAM)
HARD DRIVE: (upgrade to ) 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 8x DVD Reader/Writer (1/2 speed)
GRAPHICS: ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO 128MB

************************END OF DESKTOP

B) SECURITY:

Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 under 30 minutes, and hacked within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008. Linux and Vista were not able to be hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered.
All macs are standardized with Cameras, if your system gets hacked, the hacker would more likely be able to turn on your camera.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

C) VIRUSES

The argument that OS X has less viruses is true, but that is against XP, BUT Mac OS X has viruses, a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

Google/Yahoo Mac Viruses

D) WINDOWS LICENSE is discounted with PCs

You do not pay the full price, for instance Dell -> you pay $50 or less for Vista Home Premium If you buy a Mac and want Vista, you pay full price.

D) EXPANDABILITY & REPAIR...

With AppleCare you have to put down $300 and there is no guarantee the computer will be fixed, may cost more.. Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

E) PROBLEMS

Macintosh's are far from bug free. Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Answer
I'm not up on the specs required by the latest Adobe software, but the problem that jumps out to me is the hard drive: It's a 5400rpm unit, you would really want a seperate faster hard drive to act as the video scratch.

The Hard drive in the laptop has to run the system and programmes, if you then add in video data then it's not going to be stable with all those MBs getting chucked around.

You need to get a seperate 7200rpm drive. Lacie do rugged drives with this rotation speed, if you have a firewire port they are also bus powered.

I don't see any reference to the bus speed either, you want 768 or preferably faster. This dictates how quickly the various components can communicate. No point having a fast processor and a fast external drive if the system bus speed is strangling it.

These are why desktops are generally the better option for video editing. Unless you use a mac. Which I do.

laptops...?

I'm looking to buy a laptop. I want something medium sized but not too heavy. Has a lot of memory. Good internet connection. and is between 1000 and 1600 dollars. Any ideas? thanks for the help! :)

Answer
Dual-core CPU laptops start at about $450 in the Sunday ads, while a very nice Core 2 laptop will be closer to a grand. The only thing the Core 2 laptop will have over a $450 laptop is a faster processor (which is a waste if you don't edit/encode video or any other CPU intensive tasks. If you listen to music, type, browse, download, etc. = average user nowdays, the $450 notebook has more power than you'll ever use).

$1,600 for a laptop is idiotic unless you're a gamer or you edit video 24/7.
