Best Video Editing software?

Alex

I'm looking for some good video editing software, I'm currently trying to use WMM but it crunches down the video from being 1600x900 to about 5/7 of the size taking out alot of detail. I have tried vegas before but that makes it even worse, pixelates the whole thing, I need the editor to keep the video in it's original size, I just need it to compile the videos and let me edit a little bit, so what's the best software that you guys have seen?

Answer
You can find a list of video editing software on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_editing_software

What you're looking for is freeware, I'm assuming, correct? If that's the case, you should have Windows Movie Maker already installed on your computer. When used correctly, it can be proved to be quite useful and can make your work look professional. On my computer there is Windows DVD maker, and you can check if you have that on your computer too. You can also try Lightworks, or Free Studio, which are listed on the site that I posted above.

For other sites that have video editing software downloads, you can try the following:
1) http://www.virtualdub.org/ - I have personally never used it before, so I am not going to say whether or not it is a good software to use.
2) http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ - I remember watching a video on youtube once about Chroma Key and Green-screen techniques. Apparently, Wax is one of the best editing software for doing stuff like that, and if i'm not mistaken, many people recommended it. So I'm pretty sure that it's a good software to try.

(I also found a site which lists 18 best video editing softwares for downloading that you can try, which is located here: http://savedelete.com/best-free-windows-video-editing-software.html)

In terms of online video editing, you can try JayCut, which I have used before to do my school projects. It is simple to use, fast and reliable, in my opinion so I would definitely recommend using it. You can also try Photobucket which is a site where you can host images and videos. Just upload your video and you should be able to view the video and edit it from there, such as adding text and other special effects. You can also try One True Media, MotionBox, Editor One, and Movie Masher, which are all video editing sites that people often use.

Video editing freeware/software?

Hi, I have some .avi videos that I want to burn into a DVD. I just found out that Windows DVD Maker can do that, but what I wanted is to add chapters in the .avi, since its 1hr and 25 minutes. I want to add chapters for scene selection and stuffs so its easier to watch when i just want one segment. Thanks! Software are okay, but as much as possible, freeware since I am on a tight budget.
But if anyone knows how to add chapters to an .avi file to be burned as DVD without using any additional software, that's fine with me too. Thanks!

Answer
Unless you use a pro/sem-pro editing program like Adobe Premiere Pro, there really isn't a way to add chapter points with editing software.

This is usually done with authoring software.

If you check here, you'll find different guides explaining how to use different authoring programs.

http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvdauthoring.htm

free authoring software is found here:

p.s.
"freeware" IS software.

www.youtube.com/kbishh

any of her videos work. they all have the qualities im looking fo in an editing software.

Answer
There are many video editing softeare that can help you, just need to pay attention to the output format.
YouTube accepts a wide range of video file formats such as WMV AVI MOV and MPG with mp3 music.
You can use software like MS movie maker,it's free but too limited.
I used to use Adobe After Effects and DVD slideshow builder,Adobe is kinda complicated and DVD slideshow builder is better for amateur both of them are nice and contains kinds of text effects.

What is the best (affordable) video editing software?

Early Cuyl

I want to basically cut/paste clips and create my own videos.

Answer
If you're running a Windows machine, then you've already got Movie Maker installed (Start>All Programs). I started out learning video editing using WMM 2.1 for XP. A good first step for a beginner or just-for-fun user, but lacks advanced features like layering via multiple tracks.

Wax 2.0e is a video editor free for download online (http://www.debugmode.com/wax/). In terms of features, it's a step up from WMM--allows for multiple tracks and is capable of chroma keying (effect for green screening).

I currently use Sony Vegas Pro 8.0; at a few hundred dollars for purchase, I certainly wouldn't call it affordable. However, Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum has many of the same upper-level features and effects, but only costs $85 (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/vegasfamily.asp).

If you're just getting into video editing or want only basic features, I'd recommend trying out Movie Maker first. If you end up wanting to do something more advanced, you can always move up to Wax or Vegas Movie Studio.

How do people on youtube edit their videos?

Hayley.

I need to know how people like bubzbeauty and alyssaxabcission edit their videos to put the words and music.DO NOT put one true media.
um,first answerer, actually they both have millions of views and thousands of subscribers.

Answer
they go out and buy some video editing software. personally, i have vegas movie studio 8.0 to edit my videos. there's a lot of features you can use with video editing software, including inserting text and music. if you have windows (and don't want to pay for anything) then click on start and then type in the search box "windows movie maker" and click on the first thing that pops up. this is a decent, free video editing software that is actually pretty good. if you need help with editing videos, you can find tutorials on youtube easily.

Good video editing software?

Savvy

Hi,
I just purchased a Sony dcr sx44 video camcorder. The software that came with it, Sony Picture Motion Browser, is very simple. I actually am looking for something more detailed because editing is one of my favorite parts of filming. I'm looking for a program that is not super expensive (maybe under $50) but has cool stuff, like slow motion. Also, I am using Windows 7 on an HP computer. Any suggestions?
Thanks! =)

Answer
I'd like to recommend AVS Video Editor to you, I always use it to edit video and make funny video for uploading to Youtube, it's easy to use and the quality is awesome, you can crop, cut, join, edit video with it easily. It also embeds many special effects, you can even add text to video or add background music, that's pretty cool. It worth a try

VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE?

Mary

Hello-
I have become interested in making YouTube videos.
I have a HP windows 8 computer and I use a Canon Rebel T3I to record my videos.
Can anyone help me find a good inexpensive video editing software? For things such as cropping certain video parts, adding effects like background music, etc.
All free editors I've tried have not been very helpful to me.

Thanks!!!

Answer
Windows Movie Maker? No editing software is all easy to use and perfect, especially if it's free. But Movie Maker is and I find it great. Just get used to it a bit. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker#t1=overview

Are laptops (core i3) good for a low level video editing and playing latest games ?

lubna

Actually i have to choose between a laptop and a PC ....soo plz tell me should i go for core i3 PC or a laptop(i3) .
I will be using laptop/PC for
video editing using premiere n after affects n such softwares
for playing latest games ....
and i guess u can get me now wt i mean to say ...
um confused that as far as i think laptops are not heavy duty for games n video editing ... soo help me out

Answer
Low level video editing = probably
Playing latest games = go with something higher like the i5 or i7

More important than the processor, you will want to make sure the laptop has either an nVidia or an ATI graphics card. If it says "Intel" graphics ... you probably want to pick a different laptop.

Laptop for video editing & gaming?

Award Winn

I am currently searching for a Laptop which I can use for video editing and gaming.
I am very selective mind you so I'm not after something which can handle high performance on the latest games. I merely want a PC laptop which can handle Sims 3, Oblivion (modded) and Civilization 4 (Rise of Man Mod) and I find it hard to understand graphic card names.

I've already been researching for durable laptops, Dell being the worse, Toshiba I know being okay as I sat on mine enough to cup it and it still works, but I want something that wont burn out and everything is pointing to a 'Thinkpad'.

These are a few of the links I have found, I viewed a few of Yahoo Answers so I started looking for Intel, hope I found some but I want someone's advice who understands these specks more then I do. To me these are just a lot of numbers and letters but I'm guessing I want more then 2 GB ram, over 250 GB space though I'd rather have 500, sound is not a problem that's what earphones are for, it wont be on the internet, Windows 7 unless I find it has problems emulating XP for games like Quake or System Shock 2.

Ya don't need to read everything, but I'm looking forward to receiving some responses from you guys :) If I left anything out do let me know so I can repost this with better efford, once again thanks for reading and am looking forward to hearing from you :)

Answer
If I was to choose those i would choose the first one.

http://www.ballicom.co.uk/new-products/lenovo-thinkpad-edge-15-0301--core-i5-430m-226-ghz--156-tft.p513227.html

I would choose it because it has a intel core i5 processor and it looks like it has turbo boost. That would make your video editing and gaming go faster, along with your computing experience.

Also it has intel HD Graphics, that would be good for a smooth gaming experience and also be good for smooth video editing as well.

Best laptop under AU$1000?

Randayyz

Best laptop for under 1000 that can run FL studio, Adobe Programs and maybe some light video-editing.
Its around the same, (1063USD) but everything costs more in Australia.

Answer
If you're looking for the BEST laptop for graphics, photo and video work, it really has to be an Apple MacBook.

Of course, a MacBook (base model) costs AU$1199 new, and is strictly beyond your budget, but might be worth the extra cash if you're set on a new machine.

Otherwise I would strongly recommend trying to find a nearly-new MacBook Pro, 15 inch screen (17 would be best, of course). You should be able to pick up a good one that is less than 2 years old for that money. Macs last longer than PCs and they hold their value better.

Search the classified ads on the internet and try to find someone selling a really nice example. Many Mac users really take care of their computers and will be able to sell you a used machine with its original box, packaging, manuals and maybe even an extended guarantee. It's almost like buying a new machine.

The fluid Mac interface is way better than a PC for the type of use you envisage.

What is the best laptop to buy for me?

XPeRT1127

I am really confused which laptop to buy. If you guys are wondering, I want a laptop that suits me the best. I am not a hardcore gamer, I am really prioritizing and focusing on editing HD videos and upload them to YouTube. I am not really good at understanding laptop specs so those who light me up about these stuff will be greatly appreciated. I too, don't rely too much on video editing, though it's my number 1 reason, I also do play casual games like Sims 3, but I'm not demanding on the Highest and Optimal quality but just on low or medium settings if possible of the game, I am not really into MW3 or BF3 games, just simple casual games that will work fine on my future laptop. Other than that, my budget is around 500-600 dollars (I just converted 25,000 Philippine Peso to US Dollars). Thanks in advance and God Bless!!!
Since I live in the Philippines, prices may vary but I find this laptop suited for me, it's Lenovo:
http://villman.com.ph/Product-Detail/Lenovo_G460_5904-4089

Pls check these specs if these are okay, if not well help me find a new one in the lists there with different brands like HP, Sony, Lenovo, Toshiba, etc.

If you guys are curious with the equivalent price of those, you can use Google and type: php to usd

Thanks for reading, I hope I could find a good one.
@Answer 1: That laptop is really good! I've read some reviews about Lenovo B575 and it turns out to be a good gaming laptop as well as a budget price of 300+ dollars which is not bad. But I am just a bit worried that the laptop might now encode/convert HD videos faster since it has only 1.6 GHz, should I be bothered with it? Nice laptop btw

Answer
You might look at the new AMD Fusion line, the AMD E-350 and AMD E-450(I wouldnt look at the AMD E-300) are pretty decent computers. They are not the fastest around when it comes to pure processing power, but they have awesome graphics and can decode HD video with out hitch. They are also very, very power efficient and should have a long battery life. Though the processing power isnt the fastest around it is still more than enough to run Windows 7 and basic games very well. I seen a AMD E-450 based laptop in the Best Buy add this Sunday for a bit over $300.

The laptop you listed has Intel graphics, its not a bad laptop, but Intel graphics can not keep up with AMD(ATI) or Nvidia. The one I listed has far superior graphics, and twice as much memory.

The guy below me listed a AMD A4 based laptop, and like the one you listed it does have faster processing power, but not quite as good graphics. The A4 does have a superior GPU than any Intel based GPU, but if you are looking for a bit more speed look at a A6-3500 or above, or any A8. You said HD video was your main thing, so getting a GPU(graphics proccessor) that can actually decode 1080P should be important. No Intel GPU can decode HD video worth a ****, and will rely almost entirely on how fast the processor is.
------------------------------

The E-350 is a dual core 1.6ghz, while the E-450 is a dual core 1.65, I know its petty squabble over .05ghz, none the less its plenty fast enough to encode HD video. I simi recently built a E-350 desktop, which is slightly slower than the laptop I showed you, and decoding bluray disks only uses about 30% of the cpu power with a simi intensive cpu usage program running in the background. I built the desktop to use on my HDTV and I love it, it has never even hickuped at the most intense 1080p videos I have thrown at it. The encoding is done by the gpu, and not the cpu, so even though it dosnt have the fastest cpu on the market it dosnt matter because it has one heck of a great gpu.

For you, and decoding HD video the gpu is more important than the cpu speed. Now something else that needs to be said is that in order for the gpu to work the way it should the application needs to support hardware decoding, which 99% of all video programs do support hardware decoding now a days.

If your looking for a little more speed out of a computer the reason why I say to stay away from the A4 AMD cpus, and to look at a A6-3500 or better, or any of the A8 cpus is because they have a higher end graphics processor. This is also the reason I say stay away from any computer that has an Intel gpu. The laptop in your link is a pretty good computer, other than the graphics processor. The laptop in your link, or the link below me will probably do 720p video alright, because they do have a faster processor, but both of them will eat away your processing power, and neither one of them will do 1080p video very well, if at all.

-------------------------------------------------------------
I was looking though the list on the site from your post and found two laptops I think will work for you with faster processing power if that was something you were interested in:

http://villman.com.ph/Product-Detail/Lenovo_G470_5931-5635
There are two things I do not care much for with this laptop. (1) It comes with the DOS operating system and not Windows 7, you will have to get Windows 7 to put on this laptop yourself (I didnt notice it till I looked over your link again, but this is the same with the computer from your link). Here in the states if you are a student you generally get Microsoft software for free, but I dont know if you are in school or if the same applies there even if you are, but if the previous dosnt apply then buying Windows 7 will be an extra expense. (2) This laptop only has 2gb of memory, this is enough, but 4gb is what I would look for in a laptop.

http://villman.com.ph/Product-Detail/DM4-1209TX
The only thing I dont like about the above computer is it only has 2gb of memory, but like I said 2gb will work, and if you feel you want more this is super easy and cheap to upgrade. Unlike the two other computers from your site this computer has Windows 7 already installed, so you are good to go out of the box. Another thing I like with this laptop is that the hard drive is bigger and you will be able to store more videos on it.

Both of these new laptops from your site have slightly better gpus on them than the link I provided earlier and a faster processor. Both of these new laptops should be able to handle about anything you send at them.

Brand buying advise

Always avoid refurbished units. They only come with a 90 day warranty and have a higher failure rate. The service contacts are normally just a one time replace contract.

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. Lenovo will not allow people to read instruction on how to access the BIOS menu or to get info on their puters on their web site unless you connect to them thru Facebook. They do this so they can spy on their users. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Chrome books are useless. They are designed by Google to make you dependent on Google. If you can not access the web then you can not do anything.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

:)

Best laptop for video editing?

Kira

I currently have a hp Pavilion dv7, i5 core and running Windows 7. It's alright, but Sony Vegas is a pain in the rear to use. It always crashes on me, doesn't feel like working, etc. I know how to use pretty much all types if video editing software, (Final Cut, too), and either way, I don't mind learning. The thing is I'm going to start film school and I want a good, decent computer that's reliable and not going to let me down when it comes to video editing, because that's pretty much what I'm going to be doing. It would also be nice if it's simply just an all-around good laptop. Mac or PC, I don't have a particular preference, just tell me which is the best route to go.

Answer
Although I now own an HP laptop for personal use, for video editing, I always preferred my Mac. It was very user friendly and everything was easy to do on there. However, my problem with my last Mac laptop was how flimsy the actual casing was. I switched not because it stopped working, but because the bezel holding the screen in broke and Apple wanted $800 to fix it. They didn't have a bezel to switch out. They said I had to put a brand new screen (top piece) on it. The screen itself was still fine. I talked to them and got them down to 400, but that was NOT including the service which I would have had to pay. I couldn't see paying for that when I could get a new machine that was faster and did everything I needed it to do. Windows 7 is very similar to Mac, but as far as video editing, I still prefer my Mac. I just can't move it off the desk anymore. As you know, you'll need something with a lot of memory and a fast processor. So basically if you can afford the Mac and are very careful with it, I'd go that route. Most professionals do use them. All my friends that are in the business do, actually. Hope that helps.

yeah anyways! Check me out on twitter yo(:

Answer
The best free software is vReveal - http://www.vreveal.com/download - It is the only video editing program that a non-professional can actually use, all the others expect that you know what you are doing.

This program is much faster than any other video editing program. That enables you to observe in real time, on a split screen, what will the adjustments you selected do, compared to the original. The other programs will just leave you waiting while they process the clip, and in the end you may see that it's not perfect and you need to do it again. It will take you too long to become proficient in any of those.

The commands in vReveal are simple and it can also be set to work on automatic, fixing whatever it concludes needs to be repaired.
I've checked and ti will work on your Windows 7.

Gaming, Video Editing and Engineering laptop?

Marshall

I'm going into college for Computer Engineering, and my old laptop's not gonna cut it anymore. Not that I can't upgrade it, but it's kinda broken. So, I need a new laptop that can do all the things I'll need out of it, and at the lowest price possible.

I want to be able to run Engineering software on my laptop, and I've been informed that most Computer Engineering programs are Windows only, so it must run Windows 7 (preferably Premium). I also want to start making Minecraft videos to upload to YouTube, so it also needs to be capable of video recording/editing and have good enough specs to handle Minecraft. Here's the system requirements for Minecraft, in case you need to know:
Recommended:
OS: Windows XP/Vista/7
OpenGL: 2.0
Processor: 2.5 MHz (Single Core)
RAM: 2 GB(XP), 3 GB(Vista/7)
Hard Drive: 256 MB Free
Video: 128MB RAM

I'd like to have at least a Core 2 Duo, i5 processor, 500-GB storage, a dedicated graphics card (minimum 128MB RAM) and 4-GB RAM laptop. Are there any laptops with specs at or above what I described for less than $800? If so, what are they?
...Unless you know of a Mac that runs Windows 7 Premium, no.

Answer
Go for a used Asus ROG or Lenovo Y570 core-i5 laptop.

How to transfer DV video footage to laptop computer?

Q. I am using a competent Sony HD Videocamera to shoot video for DVD. How do I transfer the footage to my non DV compatible hp laptop which is void of the FireWire port which my editing software ( Sony Vegas) recommends for capturing video direct to the computer. It does not seem to work via HDMI either and I am on a strict budget where a new DV compatible machine or using a great DSLR camera such as the Canon Mark II 5D is out of the question right now. So basically how do I get the footage to my non DV laptop without comprising on quality of the Hd video? Thanks so much for all the responses...let's see who has the best solution to this challenge

Answer
You told us little about the laptop or the Sony HD camcorder. If you are using Vegas, then apparently the laptop is running some flavor of Windows. If you think you need a firewire port, ,then apparently the camcorder stores low compression, high quality video to digital tape (either Digital 8 or miniDV). Without the model numbers it is impossible to know for sure.

If the laptop has an available expansion slot (PCMCIA or ExpressCard), adding a firewire port is relatively inexpensive. If not, then find/use a computer that has a firewire port. Using an analog/digital converter will lose the high definition so not an option.

The HDMI port on the computer will be an AV-out from the computer to a monitor only, so that you can't get inbound video from it is not surprising, but expected.

Get an external hard drive and use a computer with a firewire port to import the video to the external hard drive, disconnect the hard drive, connect it to your computer, launch the video editor, import or drag the video on the external hard drive to the editor, start editing.

Video editing: Final cut Pro SLOW/distorted preview, WHY?

jammal hin

i just started using the final cut pro for mac and i'm a beginner though i have edited a few videos on other softwares. my problem is; while using the final cut pro, the preview window on the right which allows you view the ongoing project altogether, does not play as required, the preview is slow and distorted. i'm working on .MOV files i made from my canon 5d mark ii. and i'm making a music video project. how may i resolve this?

Answer
check to make sure its not in slo-mo. And if the footage is not rendered its not going to play right. You will notice if its not rendered by the red bar above the editing sections. Unfortunately you have to render any footage you edit to view it, which takes hours, so you may be able to drag through it to kind of see how it plays out in a stuttered way. And make sure you have tons of hard disk space because it saves the whole thing copied many times for the renderings.

Where can I find a free video editing software for a SONY HD RSR11?

nileshpate

I recently purchased a SONY HD RSR11 camcorder, which is working perfectly fine. I have captured a few videos and wanted to upload them onto my computer (VISTA). I can upload them but unable to view them. Windows media player does not open the file nor does Quick Time.
1 - I need software to view my videos without the use of my camcorder connected to the laptop.
2 - A free video editing software that can read the video files.
3 - Recommend a purchasable software as well.

Thanks.

Answer
You need a AVCHD decoder to view a Sony HD clip.
AVCHD is a new standard for many HD cams.

Make sure you have the minimum requirements before spending money on software.
AVCHD viewing will require at least a dual core processor.
So any PC more then 2 years old is likely to lap and skip during video play. To actually edit AVCHD files the PC needs to be very very very fast. High Definition, is a extremely demanding format. None of my my PCs more then 2 years old will play it. Even my brand new laptop which is a ultra portable, but only a single core, cannt play AVCHD. I have to use my DUAL core desktop just to view my AVCHD files.

Commercial software
I recommend Sony Vegas. It can handle avchd files. Has lots of options. It comes in a low cost version ($100) with most of the features and a full blown version which costs about $600.
For Macs the choices are more limited, but FInal Cut or Final Cut Express are good choices.

AVCHD is not compatible with windows movie maker.
AVCHD requires a codec to play on windows media, commercial codec costs about $10. Search engine for "avchd codec". codec stands for coder decoder.

Free.
You need to convert the AVCHD file into a Movie Maker compatible file format. There are free converters out there.
Just type free avchd converter in a search engine.

Keep in mind, unless you have a recent (within a year) high end very fast computer the final editing process (saving to disk in a HD format) could take a entire night!!!!!

If you do have a fast PC (desktop recommended, with high end video card, such as NVidia 9000 series) you'll enjoy super sharp movies. DirectX hardware assisted decoding looks much better then one thats software rendered, hence the requirement for a good video card.

Video Editing Software?

Josh

Quick Question, I need to know. What Video editing software has these requirements.
1. The Ability to mute A Videos audio, so I can play music in the background.
2. Its Free
3. I can merge Videos, and Shorten the length of videos

Answer
All video editors I know of can do all of that.

Take a look at the tutorials for Windows Movie Maker at
http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Tutorials/ - it may be WMM is all you need. It really is foolproof except that it's picky in what file formats it takes and the lack of native support for multiple video and audio tracks are a definite disadvantage (but there are workarounds).

The version 2 series were probably the most versatile, you can find them here - http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/windows-movie-maker.html - but you'll have problems installing the older versions on Windows 7. Windows Live Movie Maker is still good, but not so versatile.

Other free video editors are...

Wax - http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ - this is also a compositor - a bit like Adobe's After Effects - - unlimited video and audio tracks
VideoLAN Movie Creator - http://videolan.org/vlmc/ - up to 64 audio and video tracks
TrakAxPC - www.trakax.com/software/pc/
VideoSpin - videospin.com/ - just 1 video track so you may as well use WMM
VideoPad - the free version - http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/
Lightworks - http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ - I like this one - unlimited tracks ?
Serif MoviePlus - http://serif.com/free-video-editing-software/ - unlimited tracks ?
Ezvid - ezvid.com/ - 32 video and audio tracks

Another is Zwei-Stein. This is a good editor but I found the interface to be absolutely horrible.

VirtualDub, RAD Video tools, AVITricks and Avidemux are also good tools you should look at. Although not full editors like the others they have some useful features.

Lightworks and Wax together are a very good video editing system for free.

All are safe, at least from the sites I've linked to.

If you want to spend some money then there are reviews of 14 video editors under $100 at http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

More costly are video editors like Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere. Both of which are very good. Premiere is probably more advanced but harder to learn everything it can do.

Laptops.......what is the best Laptop for Games?

this_sucks

ok im wanting to buy a laptop that i can play games on such as World of Warcraft ((takes up alot of memory)) but i have no idea what any of the stuff means these days when i go to purchase one........so i guess im looking for an exact name of a laptop taht would be good for games + music.........also is there a chip or something that makes graphics better..?
BTW: i have $5,000 to spend on it

Answer
Money would be the main factor....

However, a specific laptop that is somewhat value conscious and good for games would be a HP DV6700t with the Nvidia 8600GT video card. I would highly recommend a 7200 rpm drive, a 2.2Ghz proc or better and a wireless N card if you plan on doing your games via a wireless network.

The 9000 series of HPs would be ideal (Dual drive Raid 0 support), but you'll end up spending well over $2000 fully configured...

Edit: $5,000! If you want the "coolest" laptop in that price range for games, you are looking at the Alienware/Dell XPS category. If you want the same thing (90% of the same features - no dual video card support) for $1,000 less, you are looking at the HP 9700 series laptop. $,5000 is going to buy you waaay more than a W.O.W. laptop. You can get that for less than $1,500. Lots of memory really only means you need 2/3GB. 4GB is overkill. Be aware that you need to be running a 64bit OS if you hit the 4GB mark and that not even Crysis needs that much (only 1.5GB for recommended configuration).

Which laptop should I get?

Das Gross

HP Pavilion dv6t or MacBook Pro 13"

What I plan on using either of these laptops for

1. Good gaming experience with the newest titles (Integrated Graphics are key). By that, I mean it can run Portal 2 and Left 4 Dead 2 very well.
2. Video editing (I'm in a A/V class where Final Cut Pro is the main software. If I got a Macbook, I could install Final Cut Studio 2 for free, as I'm a student)
3. Everyday use for Word Processing, etc. Battery Life is a big factor as well.
4. Which one will be the most reliable/last the longest/has the best resale value.
Oh, and the MacBook Pro is the newest edition. 2.4ghz processors, Intel HD 3000 graphics
The only real games I want to play on the MacBook Pro are already on OS X. Portal 2, Counterstrike Source, Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty 4, Civilization IV, etc.
One more thing: I'm reluctant to buy another HP product because I've had bad experiences with HP laptops.

Answer
Here's the problem. Brand names are not manufacturers (except MSI which is design+production and the Asus/Asustek partnership, and the Lenovo Thinkpad highest end T series which is Japan designed) The two you mention are both wrong for different reasons.
HP reliability and service is at the bottom of the barrel year after year. Here is the latest survey:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/244419/laptop_reliability_and_satisfaction_macbooks_rule.html
HP has their manufacturers take the same basic shell, cooling, fans, etc and has them use the full spectrum of CPU and graphics, the high end ones generating lots of heat. Their fans are noisy and cooling systems break down a lot.
Apple is the top of quality, but the bottom of value. For the same $1200 for a reference, you get really bad CPU and graphics, and as you mention Intel HD, it is not for gaming. Here is a couple of sites: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

When you mention re-sale value, the values drop fast once you buy a laptop. On average it is 50% per year. However, you need to spend money to get the features you want. Battery life numbers are usually false. They run them differently at each company and some are likened to a car rolling downhill for mpg (while engine is running of course).

You can write the blank check and get a high end Mac Pro and say screw the price. Some people do. Great operating system, reliability, software, features, wow-factor among friends, etc. It is a fine product if you think it is worth the premium.

I have a few favorites on the market, especially if you are USA seems models change by geo.
Lenovo Y570 is top value in a good graphics good performance mid-range quality well featured system, going with sale prices, and front page can get you 10% discount on first order with your email address.
http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=F41BC8E1656C5F85171FBDB172571912&action=init
It's a 15.6" USB 3.0. Specials change often. Sample as IdeaPad Y570 Laptop - 08626JU - $800 and the coupon if you get it covers tax and a little more. The MAC 13 is $1200
i7-2670QM 2.2GHz quad core. The clock screening boost to 2.4 buys little (it's the same IC)
The Max 13 is a dual core 2.4GHz i5. They hide it, but it is the i5-2430. (6786 vs 3467 passmark score). The Y570 has 8GB ram. Apple wants $200 to upgrade to 8GB RAM. Y570 uses NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M 1GB. MAC PRO 13 is Intel graphics (puke at the price). You can dig into all the features, but even though much bigger, the Y570 blows away Macpro13 other than size and operating system and battery life (because of the CPU+graphics not pulling power for MAC).
Your better compare is a Macpro 15 which has graphics. The base model at $1800 is more than double the Y570 price. You get thinner+lighter, better battery life, better operating system, your free software for vid edit, but not quite the I/O ports of the Y570. The HD6750M is #80 at Notebookcheck. It is a high end class 2. Not great gaming, but OK. The GT 555M is a low end class 1 at #65. So, the Y570 is better graphics officially and is 1GB GDRAM. The Y570 with 8GB RAM again takes $200 to get the MAC to 8GB. The Y570 is at least comparable to a MACPRO15 when you stack up everything. Some would call it better, some think Windows sucks and nothing stacks against a MAC. I stack $1200 price difference in comparably equipped against a MAC on top of the Y570.
Now, won't get into details as I am already too big an answer, look for gaming level Asus or MSI if you want higher end graphics than the Y570. If you want smaller system, browse the Lenovo site and compare all the specs to competition. Buy the best value of the brand you are comfortable with. Worldwide PC sales unit volume at last check were HP/compaq, Lenovo, Dell and Acer with their other brands neck+neck at #4 in order, and apple, toshiba, samsung... and everyone else after that.
PS add: 1st answer was half right in a few words. Macpro 13 does not do games. Mac pro 15 does gaming almost as good as Y570, and maybe a tiny touch better with 8GB ram for $200 because the better screen and op system counters the better graphics chip of the Y570. Gets close at a $1200 price spread.

Video/Photo Editing Laptop?

g_force_re

I'm looking to buy a laptop, but am unsure of what I should be looking for in terms of:
memory,
hard drive,
processor,
graphics card etc..

I will mostly be using my laptop for editing photos and videos with software such as Adobe Photoshop and Premiere, can you suggest what I am looking for, in terms of the above list and anything else I have forgotten to mention!
I know this totally goes against the above, but being a student, I'm looking for a laptop at a reasonable price.
£800/$1400 at the *very* most :S

Answer
Graphics Card - 256MB or higher - design and editing programs need this to render out large images. Please note that most laptops only have 126MB and this will not perform as well - be careful. Not all new laptops have a great graphics card. NVIDIA and ATI are the main brands to look for with 256MB or higher.
Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo that runs at 2.4 Ghz or higher. Higher is better, I'd got for 2.5-2.8Ghz. I have a 2.53 Ghz.
Memory - 3 or 4 GB. 4GB is amazing and renders things so much quicker - so when editing each time you like use the blur tool in photoshop it won't take as long to render each the change in each pixel.
HD - I'd go for a 320GB that is 5400 RPM or 7200RPM. Or bigger ^_^ Do not go with a HD that is below 5400 RPM.
I think that's all I can think of... unless you want a blu-ray player ^_^
Here are some good laptop models you should look at:
Sony Vaio FW
HP dv5t or basically any of the dv5 series
A Dell Studio or XPS (not my favorite but an option)
A lenovo IdeaPad y710
Those are all great options - I personally have a Sony Vaio FW that I absolutely love - I edit RAW photos from my Canon dSLR everyday in Photoshop and it works wonders. I love having the 16.4" screen - it's about the size of the 17" MacBook Pro. It also cools incredibly well.
The dv5t was my second choice in choosing my laptop.
And my mom has a Lenovo she loves - they are built really really well.

Answer
unfortunately .mov is a quick time format and microsoft does not support those files in their softwares.

what you need to do is probably buy a movie editing software that supports .mov files like rosio easy media creator.

Are there any FREE video editing software downloads like Windows Movie Maker?

Q. Like Windows Movie Maker, but will allow avi and possibly MP4 published videos? Windows Movie Maker will only publish to wmv format. And that's not the clearest.Plus, it won't edit my mp4 videos. PLEASE HELP! I WAS using Pinnacle VideoSpin, but it suddenly wouldn't work anymore.

Answer
FileLab is good. FileLab is a freeware video editing program for just about all platforms (Mac, PC, etc...). I use it a lot to make YouTube videos. It runs in your browser using a simple plug-in download. It's also available as a free app on Facebook. It has many transition and video effects, very good title editor, and customized color correction to include brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, and gamma. This tutorial on FileLab was made with FileLab
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYbAe-mUscs

If you want to get really fancy, VSDC is also freeware, but has much more advanced capabilities than FileLab, such as green screen! It's not as obvious or easy to use as FileLab, but did I already mention it has green screen (chroma key), and it's free? Also, it is capable of editing in most most popular video formats and compression schemes including high definition (HD), AVI, H.264, MP4, MKV, MTS, 3GP, WMV, QT, MP3, MPEG2 FLV, SWF. YouTube. Get it now while it's free because eventually this will go payware.

Macbook pro vs macbook air 2013?

I was wondering whether the macbook pro 13 inch(non retina) is a good idea or the macbook air 13 inch latest model. I would use it mostly for email, word processing, videos, and mostly just web surfing. THe macbook air seems better, but i like the power and larger hard drive on the pro. Im not sure which to buy?

Answer
Macbooks are overpriced laptops that dont do anything more than a regular laptop they cant really even play games that well or edit too well so i found a really great laptop that does all of that stuff as well as a little gaming for you which is WAY less than the macbook

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/toshiba-satellite-15-6-34-laptop-4gb-memory-640gb-hard-drive-satin-black/1617811.p?id=1219057250318&skuId=1617811

Which laptop should I get?

Q. I need a powerful laptop for school, gaming, photo/video editing, movie making, programming/coding, under $1,700. I have narrowed everything down to 4 choices. The Alienware M14x, the Alienware M17x, the MSI GT70 0ND-444US, or the Apple MacBook Pro Retina display 13". Which one fits the needs I mentioned above.

Answer
For gameing alone I would say the Alienware M17x but for all of them I would say the MSI because the only game the macbook can run is Sims 3. Also the MSI is slim and portable but also has power. With the MSI you should really buy a cooling pad thought. Software to buy would adobe photoshop, adobe after effects or cyberlink powerdirector, microsoft office 2013 student and Microsoft Visual Studio.

Is AVS editor a good investment?

Courtney

I downloaded AVS and made a video with it and was very happy with how it came out but because i didnt actually buy I can't put it on youtube like I wanted, so I'm considering buying it. It's kind of pricey so I'm very cautious to buy it. Does anyone know if AVS is worth the $60? Or if there are any other cheaper (or free!) alternatives. I also downloaded trakAxPc for a free trial but it's very confusing and too complicated for me. Also I have an HP laptop.

Answer
Right now that $60 licenses all of AVS titles. I bought the same license a few years ago for $100, it's been well worth it, their apps are cool, their support is responsive. And their video converter will put it on youtube. So yeah, go for it, $60 is a deal.

How to you play & store HD home videos on your tv?

We are thinking about getting our first digital camcorder for the family for Christmas, one that does HD videos. But I don't understand how you play them back on your tv. I mean we can burn them to a DVD disk, but that wouldn't be HD, correct (not blueray)? Do you have to use the camcorder to play them back on the tv, that's not convenient. I'm confused, please help! =)

Answer
Rugratzzzzzzz and iridflare are both correct.

Recap:

1) Use the camcorder to store the video and playback. Not practical for hard disc drive camcorders. Expensive for flash memory - and flash memory is not a good long term archive. Neither is hard disc drive... As well, this does not allow any editing of the video. Camcorders enerally record to formats that editors adn other converters can read and import - but cannot export to...

2) Use a digital tape based camcorder. This is actually the "best" solution. Import the video using firewire, edit, export the video back out to the digital tape. I sometimes do this to two tapes - one tape gets put away as the long term archive, the other can be used by playing back with the camcorder so high definition video can be viewed.

3) You are correct, if you use a DVD authoring application and burn a regular single layer or double layer DVD, that will be downsampled to standard definition, but it will be the clearest standard def you've seen. Because the discs are cheap and this is the most common format for sharing, it is a method I continue to use.

3a) It is possible to use a DVD burner to save the high definition video files onto single layer or double layer DVDs. They do not hold much space (4.7 and 8.5 gig, respectively) when compared to BluRay blanks (that start at 25 gig), so the amount of video that can be stored on single or double layer DVDs (if high definition) is a lot less.

4) Use a "media center" type device capable of dealing with high definition video. An example of this is AppleTV. Workflow would include importing the video, editing, then rendering the edited video to a high quality, high definition video format (h.264/AVC). For sharing with others, if the file size, video length and file type are appropriate (typically AVI or MOV files), then these can be uploaded to video sharing sites like vimeo and youtube (and secured if desired to limit the viewers) and 720p high definition is presented.

4a) Use whatever computer happens to be available - that can deal with high definition video. Most HDTVs have a VGA port. have connected a laptop to the HDTV's VGA and audio connections and used it as the playback "deck" for the 720p rendered high definition video.

With 4 and 4a, use of a "NAS" (network attached storage) is advantageous so you do not need to store the huge video files on a computer normally used day-to-day. Many NAS systems are RAIDed so when one drive fails, the other still has the video - and replacing the failed drive gets the working drive's files written to the replaced drive - so the possibility of loss of data is not generally expected. Since the NAS is on your home network, any computer on the network has access to the video.

After loading video clips from camcorder to laptop, the playback is jumpy?

Sunshine 1

but not when played back on the camcorder. What do I do?
I am using a Praktica DVC 5.5 HDMI with resolution options of 1080 720 WVGA and QVGA. The laptop is a Compaq presario CQ70 (windows vista). Hope this is helpful. Great to get help so quickly after a long time trying to work things out on my own!

Answer
Hi Stephen, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers: [UPDATE -- see below]

As a brief Answer to your first post here, most laptops are NOT well-suited for trying to edit & playback HD video. Consumer HD video tends to be highly-compressed, and that takes a lot of mathematical algorithms & processing power to decode & playback.

Professional video editors spend thousands of dollars on extra-RAM, multi-core processors, and super-fast external hard drives (to keep the main boot & software drive from thrashing around needlessly). Some editing setups have dedicated hardware accelerators just to handle the HD video compression & de-compression needed for real-time edit & rendering playback.

Your camcorder has the equivalent of hardware encoders/decoders to handle smooth playback of footage. This is stuff your laptop has to try to do in software, along with everything else you might have running in the background.

Without knowing what kind (Mac or PC & which OS version) of laptop you have, and which processor and RAM amounts, etc., I can't guess at your "bottleneck" without more info from you. Most Windows machines require a good DirectX 9 (or higher) compatible video card with plenty of video-RAM to run HD video codecs without "hiccups". Laptops tend to scrimp on video card specs. And telling us exactly what brand & model # camcorder you use also will help.

A quick workaround is to set your camcorder to record in standard-def (640x480 VGA), if it has that menu option. The results will run smoother, and look just fine for YouTube and other online projects. Most modern camcorders will also have standard-def 16:9 widescreen settings to allow that "HD look" but still use standard def bandwidth.

Feel free to update your Question with more info on your hardware & software setup, using the "Additional Details" link on the Action Bar below your Question. (Mouse-over the "pencil icon" Edit menu.) This Q&A will remain open for at least 4 days for updates & responses.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

[UPDATE edit] Thanks for the details. Your Praktica DVC is basically a German combo camcorder/still-camera that shoots H.264-compressed video in both 1080p & 720p HD, as well as widescreen (WVGA, 800x480) and email-friendly QVGA (320x240) standard def files in QuickTime ".MOV" format. The H.264 codec can be the hardest for some computers to deal with (files are highly-compressed). Make sure you have the latest Apple QuickTime 7 for Windows update (free at Apple.com). You can also update to QuickTime Pro for $29, which will give you more options (converting & simple editing) dealing with H.264 files.

Your laptop has a 2GHz dual-core Pentium (mobile version chip), and came with 3Gigs of memory (and 1.2Gigs of video RAM) -- not bad and not great. The stock hard drive only spins at 5400RPM, which is kinda slow for shuffling HD video files. Adding more RAM and changing to a faster hard drive are about the only speed-up options you have in a laptop. Close out all other apps and background processes (turn off updates, etc.) when you're dealing with HD video.

Windows Movie Maker (WMM) won't "natively" handle H.264 (or any Quicktime files, for that matter), but you can download Real Networks' free RealPlayer & RealPlayer Converter, which should play your video files much better (as well as convert them to .WMV format, for WMM to be able to edit & play). See link in my Sources below.

You might find that WVGA widescreen videos are better-handled by your laptop & software, and will still give you that big screen look. The file sizes will also be smaller than 1080p or 720p HD.

Best/top pc laptop for video/photo editing?

Dejadthisv

So, my mac was having issues for months. When I went in to the apple store they told me it would cost me $1400 to get my still under warranty MacBook fixed. I was very unhappy, to say the least. I have sworn off all apple products. I've been looking for a new computer for almost a month now (thank heavens for smart phones). I finally found one I liked for what I use my computer for, which is video, photo and music editing. The computer I wanted was the Asus n56vm ab71. As it would go, the week before I planned to purchase it, it sold out. My next choice was also an Asus, the a53sd ts71. Alas, the same thing happened. My next choice was the Levono Y580. I found it on amazon, the next day I went to by it, it was gone. I've been without a computer for almost a month now. I'm dying; if I didn't have a smart phone I don't know what I would've done. I need a computer for my job. I just want one that will be good for all my editing needs. I'm also on a budget and can't really afford to pay more than $1000. Thanks in advance for any assistance provided.

Dell Precision Mobile Workstations are on deep discount.
Get this and upgrade to i7. It has an NVIDIA® Quadro® 2000M
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=bwct72b&model_id=precision-m4600&c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04

You could go Lenovo SLI for $900
http://www.techbargains.com/news_displayItem.cfm/335575

With i7 for $1049

But the Quadro 2000M has better scores for Video Editing Programs. Better than the gaming SLI setups.
Look at SPECviewperf 11 Scores for Catia Ensight Lightwave Maya etc.

Any good video editing software besides windows movie maker?

BassSinger

I'm trying to edit several videos however windows movie maker is becoming a pain in the butt for me. Is there a good free video editing software that may be similar to windows movie maker?

Answer
FileLab is a freeware video editing program for just about all platforms (Mac, PC, etc...). I use it a lot to make YouTube videos. It runs in your browser using a simple plug-in download. It has many transition and video effects, very good title editor, and customized color correction to include brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, and gamma. This tutorial on FileLab was made with FileLab
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYbAe-mUscs

VSDC is also freeware, but has much more advanced capabilities than FileLab, such as green screen!

Good video editing software for Windows 7?

Nuke Storm

I'm not a fan of WLMM, I don't like how they destroyed the greatness of what was the past versions.

So anyway, I downloaded Windows Movie Maker that was for the vista version for my windows 7, but it crashes a lot and removes things that I add in my vids when I don't want it to.

So I want to ask everyone out there, that knows any good video editing software?
Also, I would like something that maybe also has a timeline other than something that takes a long time to get use too.

Answer
How about three very good freeware video editor programs, Freemake, FileLab, or VSDC? Each is safe, fully functioning, no watermarks, will not ask for money, and are recent releases that are HD capable.

They are listed in order of increasing capabilities. Freemake provides merging of video clips, and simple editing such as cutting and splicing. It will also automatically upload your video to YouTube if desired. It is also capable of converting your video to just about any video format in existence. FileLab has much more features, such as color correction, title editor, and special effects. VSDC is an advanced editor, capable of effects such as green screen editing. The following link has more info, but make sure to also view other articles on this site, as they outline other capabilities of these three programs.:

What is the best stop motion animation program fo pc's that let you ad voices and edit it and is FREE?

Gen S

Answer
The majority of stop motion programs have features that concentrate on making the stop motion process quicker and easier. They'll usually have some sort of timeline, live video preview, onion skinning, etc. While the better programs will have an audio track where you can import a soundtrack like dialogue in order to help sync your animation to audio, none of them have the full range of capabilities that an audio editing suite or video editing suite. You're especially not going to find a free program that has the features of a 3 separate software suites in one program.

What the majority of people do is compile and fine tune their animation in a stop motion program, then take the video into video editing software to do the larger cuts, transitions and editing. Stop motion programs make it easy to edit, delete, add and rearrange individual frames. Typically, working with individual frames is a hasle in straightforward video editing programs because they weren't made with frame by frame animation in mind. Usually you can import sound in a video editing program, but if you need to do some heavy duty sound mixing and splicing you'd probably be better off doing it in a sound editing program (then importing that sound into a video editing program to put your entire movie together).

To actually frame-grab and compile the movie, I'd suggest using Monkeyjam if you're on a PC. It's free.

AnimatorDV: Simple+ became freeware.

If you're on a Mac, you could try Framethief or FramebyFrame (both free).

For free video editing, you can try:

Windows Movie Maker 2 (regular Windows Movie Maker sucks. You should at least upgrade to WMM2 which has better features and more options)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

VideoMach
http://squash.hostbrickmovies.com/VideoMach-2.7.2.exe

VirtuaDub

Avidemux

To do sound editing, you should give Audacity a try.

Processor: Intel Core i7-620, Dual Cor, 4MB Cache, 2.13 GHz
Wireless LAN: Intel BGN
Hard Disk Drive: 320 GB
RAM Size: 4GB
Monitor: 12.1"WXGA

Answer
I have one of these and I'm very impressed by it. Those specs are better than mine so it will perform very well.

Some things I have used this tablet for:
Design and create blogs
Edit and render 1080P hd video using Sony Vegas
Run multiple monitors at the same time

Overall this tablet has done a great job. I recommend having the 8 cell battery and the X200 ultrabase docking station. I have a blog about it which you can view at http://www.lenovox201.com
