GoPro Movie editing software, FREE?

WilG

I just got a GoPro and was planning on Windows Movie Maker for Vista 64 bit like usual. However, I couldn't open the files up since they are in mp4. I don't want a program for converting but rather anther free alternative to Windows Movie maker that can open mp4 as well as some effects. Also, it would be really nice if it had a "reverse" video feature. Thanks

Answer
With Aunsoft video converter, you can also convert videos for video editing software like Adobe Premiere, Windows Movie Maker, Sony Vegas, and upload video to YouTube and MySpace to share videos.

Video editing software.?

Mitch

So I used to use Windows live movie maker to edit my game recordings as it had the codec required. But now windows live movie maker has changed to a crap movie maker that crashes and freezes. I have sony vegas 10 but it doesn't have the codec AVI to edit my recordings. So now I don't know what to do. Any help would be much appreciated :)
But when i try to import it says it doesn't have the codec AVI it's not the rendering it's the importing that's the problem :)
Anyone know how I could fix this problem with Sony Vegas? It's a good programme. If only I could use it.

Answer
A program with over 2000 effects, easy to learn and can do things Windows movie Maker could never do. Another program with even more effects and Timeline space also.

Best PC laptop for video editing?

Music Is M

Hi!

I'm a film student looking to buy a new laptop this week, but I don't want to spend more than $1,200. I want the best possible quality I can get! I know macs are the big thing but on my budget I feel like I can get a faster/better computer in that price range by getting a PC. Also I edit with Avid Media Composer and Adobe premier/suite so if you know a laptop that handles those well... let me know!

Suggestions??

Also are computers that are good for gaming also good for video editing? I was checking out graphics cards and gaming computers seem to have the best ones!

Any opinions on this Toshiba?
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cdetland.to?poid=2000044488

Btw... I'm pretty skeptical about hp laptops because my last two broke and they always overheat!
To clarify, I am not looking for a gaming computer or a mac! Just a computer that will run fast and support intense video editing!

Answer
The Toshiba Qosmio X870 you're looking at isn't a good choice. The problem with that laptop is that it comes with a 17.3" 1600x900 display (as opposed to a 17.3" 1920x1080 display). 1600x900 resolution in a 17.3" display makes things onscreen large, and 17.3" displays that have 1600x900 resolution tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. You should make a point to avoid displays like this (15.6" 1366x768, 17.3" 1600x900, etc.) when it is reasonable to do so, unless you require the larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

This is more of an issue than a lot of other things. For example, an i5-3210M (as opposed to maybe an i7-3630QM) is not a terrible processor, a GTX 660M (as opposed to maybe a GTX 670M) is not a terrible GPU, but a 17.3" 1600x900 display is a terrible display. You need to be concerned with improving a display that's pretty bad before you start focusing on other aspects that are already pretty good in a lot of models.

Also note that things like the 12GB RAM, 3GB video memory, etc. are there purely for marketing purposes. They don't improve your gaming experience. You are not going to notice a difference in gaming by having more than ~8GB, and if you end up needing more in other programs than keep in mind that it's very cheap and easy to add more memory in after-market if you get a computer that has less memory than you need. As for the video memory: A 1.5GB GTX 670M is just as good as the 3GB version. The video memory is not the bottleneck, the GPU chip itself is. You'll see essentially the same performance on a 1.5GB version as you'll see on a version with unlimited memory.

That said, take a look at these models:

Best/top pc laptop for video/photo editing?

Dejadthisv

So, my mac was having issues for months. When I went in to the apple store they told me it would cost me $1400 to get my still under warranty MacBook fixed. I was very unhappy, to say the least. I have sworn off all apple products. I've been looking for a new computer for almost a month now (thank heavens for smart phones). I finally found one I liked for what I use my computer for, which is video, photo and music editing. The computer I wanted was the Asus n56vm ab71. As it would go, the week before I planned to purchase it, it sold out. My next choice was also an Asus, the a53sd ts71. Alas, the same thing happened. My next choice was the Levono Y580. I found it on amazon, the next day I went to by it, it was gone. I've been without a computer for almost a month now. I'm dying; if I didn't have a smart phone I don't know what I would've done. I need a computer for my job. I just want one that will be good for all my editing needs. I'm also on a budget and can't really afford to pay more than $1000. Thanks in advance for any assistance provided.

Dell Precision Mobile Workstations are on deep discount.
Get this and upgrade to i7. It has an NVIDIA® Quadro® 2000M
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=bwct72b&model_id=precision-m4600&c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04

You could go Lenovo SLI for $900

With i7 for $1049

But the Quadro 2000M has better scores for Video Editing Programs. Better than the gaming SLI setups.
Look at SPECviewperf 11 Scores for Catia Ensight Lightwave Maya etc.

Kodak playsport question?

Reba

ok i got the kodak playsport video camera for christmas, and i made my video and wanted to edit it. i plugged the camera to my computer (which is a Gateway labtop) and i had to download this editing software for it. See i usually use Windows movie maker to edit videos, and i went to edit the video, and the video became like really slow. The audio was on point just the video was wayyy behind and very slow. i dont know what to do, so any help?

Answer
As far as I know, kodak playsport captures video in mov format which cannot be recognized by windows movie maker. So you'd better try to change the file extension to wmv, avi, mpg for importing to wmm. Read the following tutorial. Hope that software may help u.

http://www.kodak-video-converter.com/how-to-importtransferputedit-kodak-playsport-video-with-windows-movie-maker.html

Why is Kodak playsports video/audio off sync?

Saras

I use my PS3, Blender, Windows movie maker, and Videopad to edit videos, and I only have this problem on the last three. I download my videos from the Kodak to my ps3 and everything's synced fine, but when I download it to my computer the video is slowed down to half the speed and the sound plays normally so that it's totally off sync. If it's any help the software I use to download my videos is kodak media impressions. Do you think maybe the problem is I need to update it? If anyone knows how to fix this problem I'd be very appreciative.
I tried to find what format the kodak playsport videos are but noone actually says. PS3 however can handle a wide variety of formats so thats probably why everything works on that. I'm going to try updating kodak media impressions, and see if that helps.

Answer
Not all video formats are compatible with all editing software. You need to know what video format your PS3 uses and what video format your editing software supports. WMM does not support all video formats.

Good laptop for Sony Vegas?

Allora

I've been looking for laptops that can efficiently run Sony Vegas. I know that editing videos can sometimes cause a laptop to lag, so I'd like to keep that to a minimum.

I'm looking for a laptop with a large hardrive (750 GB and up). My budget is up to $1200. The laptop can cost less, but it has to still be good quality. PLEASE leave links to the laptops, so I can read more about it and possibly buy it. And NO notebooks or ultrabooks, as I would like to have a cd drive.

Brand buying advise

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. Lenovo will not allow people to read instruction on how to access the BIOS menu or to get info on their puters on their web site unless you connect to them thru Facebook. They do this so they can spy on their users. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

:)

Recommended Spec For HD Video Editing Laptop?

Mike

The laptop I am currently using struggles when editing videos - and is almost impossible to edit HD videos with. I need something a bit more powerful.

So, what would be the minimum requirements + a bit more, just to be sure?

Answer
Began doing video production for my job at the end of last year. Like you, at the time, I was attempting to edit HD footage with an underpowered laptop, both at work and at home. When I was researching how to upgrade my system, I found this article, which was a really big help: http://www.videoguys.com/Guide/E/Videoguys+System+recommendations+for+Video+Editing/0x4aebb06ba071d2b6a2cd784ce243a6c6.aspx

For home, I bought a Dell Studio XPS 435T: 8GB RAM, i7-920 processor, ATI Radeon HD video card, 750GB storage, and a 24'' monitor. At work, the company got me a Dell business workstation with 12GB RAM and a Xeon processor, with two 22'' monitors. A significant upgrade, to say the least. That may seem superfluous to you, but if you really want to build an HD-capable system, you need to go as beefy as you can.

That's why my advice would be to steer you away from a laptop; with a desktop, you're going to get far more bang for your buck, not to mention a much bigger screen.

It used to take an hour and a half to render a four minute video, and while editing, I was forced to have the preview window at the lowest/smallest resolution, both because of the lack of power and lack of screen real estate--not much fun and horribly time-consuming. Now, it takes eight minutes and I get to have the preview window at the best and biggest resolution, along with a timeline that stretches across two monitors--a whole lot of fun and much more efficient.

Which type of high def camcorder and files are you working with? AVCHD or HDV? Here's a blog post I wrote about my own workflow: http://www.werdofbert.com/2009/08/best-workflow-avchd-convert-editing.html

Any further questions, you can leave a comment and I'll get back to you. Hope this helped your decision!

Are there any good FREE video editing/creating programs?

Tim Sing

I just got a new camcorder Samsung SC-MX10 and have no editing software. I mean threes always Windows Movie Maker but that sucks.

I need something half way decent that will keep the original quality of the film. I may consider purchasing something down the line if I really get into it. But there is always a free version of stuff that works just the same. So I thought Iâd ask.

Thanks

Answer
There are a couple around. None of them have the full functionality that a professional grade video editor like Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid or Final Cut Pro do, but some of them still have a fair number of features and capabilities. Best to research any video editor software you come across to see if its features and abilities match your needs.

VideoMach 2.7.2 - FREE - deceptively powerful. Assemble clips, break your video files down into JPG's or BMP's for individual frame editing and the reassemble them into a video file, trim out that pesky frame where you accidentally took a shot of your thumb, Crop, resize, apply filters, audio editing is included aswell (not great, but useable), convert between file formats, make thumbnails for your webpage. a very useful piece of software.
"high performance media processing engine with ability to construct ,join, split, filter, tune and convert digital video, audio, images and image sequences. Supports AVI, MPEG, MP3, FLC, JPEG, PNG, BMP, SGI, WAV, OGG and many other formats."
For a list of all versions, go here:

http://www.gromada.com/

MediaEdit Pro 2 - "Designed specifically for moviemakers, amateur photographers and new creative artists, MediaEdit Pro will show you the world of movie and picture magic and help create professional looking, impressive movie projects. It includes several unique features not found in any other product. This is not your traditional hard to use movie editing environment.
Enhance your projects by adding over 200 included stunning effects, filters and transitions. It is as simple to use as iMovie, but many times more powerful! MediaEdit Pro's ease-of-use lets even beginners create movies that will impress the pros!"

http://www.miensoftware.com/mediaeditpro.html

DDclip - "A professional, non-linear, non-destructive, multitrack, real-time audio and video editor for Windows. It allows you to process and mix up to 32 high-quality audio tracks (24 bit/96 kHz is available) with real-time audio effects (including any DirectX plug-ins) on PC with any Windows-compatible sound card."

http://www.softlab-nsk.com/ddclipro/

DDclip free 2.23 - DDClip Free 2.23 is the most restricted package of DDClip with minimal set of features. The difference between the pro and free version can be seen here

http://www.softlab-nsk.com/ddclipro/free.html

Windows Movie Maker 2 - FREE - An update of WMM that came with Windows XP, supposedly a vast improvement. And it's free.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

VirtualDub - VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for Windows platforms (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters.

http://www.virtualdub.org/

Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 - Slightly watered down version of its big brother Premiere Pro (now CS3), Premiere Elements provides basic editing and stability for a great price. If your looking for a product to edit with thats relatively inexpensive this is definetly worth a look. Its only $100 and with what you get its worth it.

http://www.adobe.com/products/premiereel/

Vegas Movie Studio - Sony Vegas is widely becoming the editing program of choice among alot of indie filmmakers. The interface seems to be what people like about it and its price is unbeatable. This package also comes with DVD Authoring software for DVD menu creation, animating, adding buttons, etc. If you are a Brickfilmer who wants alot of features, and doesn't have alot of dough this is THE choice for you. (its only $80) If you already own an Adobe Product or two, Premiere Pro or Elements is a better choice for the integration between them.

Good AMV software (free)?

Edward

Hey I'm trying to find a free software what'll allow me to crop, change and edit pieces of video and then remove the audio and add in new audio

1.VideoSpin

3. Avidemux
Avidemux is another GPL-based video editor to cut, apply visual effects and transcode videos to other formats, insert or extract audio streams into/from a video file. Avidemux has built-in subtitle processing option and is available for Mac and Linux OSâs as well.

Software for creating/mixing 5.1 surround audio?

droids77

Is there a downloadable software for creating or mixing 5.1 surround sound?

Answer
Currently, there are several ways to create a 5.1 mix. Some editing paths enable you to build the surround mix in the DVD creation application. Other paths put the creation point earlier in the production stream, at the point where an audio editing application is used.

In both cases, the NLE is used to build a set of tracks that carry discrete audio. These tracks do not yet have spatial information â with the exception of stereo tracks. However, Avidâs Liquid and Sonyâs Vegas are able to create a six-channel spatial mix directly in a timeline.

For consumers, Dolby Digital (DD), AC-3, and 5.1 surround sound are all the same. During production, however, it is important to understand that these are not synonymous. Until 5.1 has been encoded using AC-3 â audio is carried by six discrete channels. In both Liquid and Vegas, even after spatial information has been added, the 5.1 soundtrack has not yet been AC-3 encoded.

Liquid forces the AC-3 encode to be done only during the production of a NTSC or PAL DVD. This limitation means that one cannot export HD MPEG-2 with an AC-3 bit-stream. Therefore, no simple path exists to either Blu-ray or HD DVD. (Nevertheless, using a âsharewareâ tool the AC-3 audio can be obtained.) Vegas can, however, output MPEG-2 video and AC-3 audio as separate files. Althow the software to do this is not cheap, it is downloadible and a highly effective tools at 5.1 surround editing.
(see links below) Good question!

What are some video editing software for Mac similar to Sony Vegas Pro?

Bob K

I tried Final Cut Pro and Imovie and it wasn't really going swell for me. Also Sony Vegas Pro only works for windows....so.. Is there any programs that are more pro-like similar to Sony Vegas? Thanks, and im looking for a best answer!

Answer
Aunsoft Final Mate, a great and useful camcorder assistant software, has everything needed to directly capture/backup AVCHD (*.mts, *.m2ts), AVCHD Lite, AVCCAM, NXCAM, TOD, MOD recordings from Hard Disk Drive/SD Card Camcorders to PC, to import, edit and create spectacular movies on a timeline. It is also powerful enough to play/convert native 1080 60p/50p footages and Dolby Digital 5.1 surround.

Powerful timeline-oriented editing features like split/trim video, splice clips, crop, do color correction, deinterlacing, replace audio, adjust volume, etc help you create satisfied film results. Merge/combine avchd (*.mts, *.m2ts), AVCHD Lite, TOD into only one file without any re-encoding or recompression.

Export/convert edited camcorder video to other editors (Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, WMM, Pinnacle Studio, etc), media devices (iPad, iPhone4, droid x, nokia n8, galaxy s, hdtv, projector, etc), or common formats (mov, avi, wmv, mp4, mpg, mpeg-2, etc) with the high quality and least amount of clicks. Ultra extreme performance with support for NVIDIA® CUDATM and Intel while encoding.

What are some good free video editing softwares for Mac?

Veronica

In other words, are there any free programs that allows you to record and edit a video on a MacBook? I specifically need one that allows you to create a similar "lyrics" type video you see on YouTube. Please give me the links too!

Answer
Avidemux (Windows/Mac/Linux)
Avidemux IconAvidemux is the Instagram of video editing software: quick, dirty, and impressively capable. The software is designed for quick trimming, filtering, encoding, and a slew of other basic features, which are all housed within an unfortunate, dull grey window thatâs easy to navigate despite its Windows 95 appearance. The cross-platform software is open-source â with a resourceful wiki page to boot â and tasks can be automated using assorted projects, job queues, and custom scripting capabilities that push it slightly beyond barebones functionality.
Fortunately, with light features also comes a relatively light footprint, and Avidemux takes up little space compared to the other programs in our roundup. It also allows users to change extensions and select individual output formats when finished editing a video, but the less-than-friendly user interface makes it difficult to navigate the more intricate features and worthwhile tools. It may remain a bit buggy and prone to crashing, but the programâs defaults still work as intended. Avidemux is a standout choice once you learn your way around the software.

iMovie (Mac OS X)
IMovie IconAppleâs iMovie has long been one of the most consumer-orientated video editors out there. Itâs packaged with iLife, a simple software suite that comes bundled with every Mac, and touts some serious practicability for the everyday user. The latest version of the software allows you to import and edit video clips from a variety of external devices, such as smart phones and professional camcorders, and sports a clean interface that is attractive and easy to navigate.
Aside from video, images and audio can also be incorporated into your project by simply dragging your desired multimedia into the project area and arranging them in timeline-like fashion. The resulting video can always be previewed in real time, as well as any effects â themes, text, music, etc. â before exporting the file directly to YouTube or burning it straight to DVD. Newly added features include an impressive Face Finder, a basic audio editor, and the ability to make your own movie trailers complete with transitions and end credits. Itâs not a tour de force of video editing, but itâs perfectly suitable for home videos and minor projects.

personally i feel this 2 are best

What's a good free video editing software?

Daniel

I'm using a Flip Ultra HD, and I'm wondering what's a good video editing software.

Answer
You'll need one capable of HD video editing. Some of the older freeware can't do that. However, this year saw the release of two very good freeware editors, both capable of HD editing (and saving).

FileLab is a freeware video editing program for just about all platforms (Mac, PC, etc...). I use it a lot to make YouTube videos. It runs in your browser using a simple plug-in download. It's also available as a free app on Facebook. It has many transition and video effects, very good title editor, and customized color correction to include brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, and gamma. This tutorial on FileLab was made with FileLab
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYbAe-mUscs

VSDC is also freeware, but has much more advanced capabilities than FileLab, such as green screen! It's not as obvious or easy to use as FileLab, but did I already mention it has green screen (chroma key), and it's free? Also, it is capable of editing in most most popular video formats and compression schemes including high definition (HD), AVI, H.264, MP4, MKV, MTS, 3GP, WMV, QT, MP3, MPEG2 FLV, SWF. YouTube. Get it now while it's free because eventually this will go payware.

Answer
I'm not up on the specs required by the latest Adobe software, but the problem that jumps out to me is the hard drive: It's a 5400rpm unit, you would really want a seperate faster hard drive to act as the video scratch.

The Hard drive in the laptop has to run the system and programmes, if you then add in video data then it's not going to be stable with all those MBs getting chucked around.

You need to get a seperate 7200rpm drive. Lacie do rugged drives with this rotation speed, if you have a firewire port they are also bus powered.

I don't see any reference to the bus speed either, you want 768 or preferably faster. This dictates how quickly the various components can communicate. No point having a fast processor and a fast external drive if the system bus speed is strangling it.

These are why desktops are generally the better option for video editing. Unless you use a mac. Which I do.

What's a good software to download for editing videos?

Beckie

I know this is hard to find but I need something free and don't need anything fancy I just need to be able to make my clips go from one clip to another so basically from one take to another as usual videos do. It doesn't have to be for beginners or experts it doesn't matter but a few special effect things wouldn't hurt:) like I said I don't need anything extravagant. It would be nice if it doesn't slow down or put viruses on my computer as well lol, thanks:)

If interested, links below takes you to the sites, but you can get these two programs for free. Do this by opening a web browser, surfing over to YouTube. Once there, in the search box on that site, enter 'Pinnacle Studio 14' or âSony Vegas Pro 10â. Youâre looking for free download, find a link or video that says that, in the video description, there will be link for a free download. Make sure, before you do this, to make sure your computer can meet or exceed those Specs above, and pay special attention to the AVCHD specs if you have or are going to get a HD camcorder.

A laptop running these Programs, when rendering say a 10 minute Video out, be prepared, render times could leave your laptop useless, while rendering for 4 or 5 days on that file. Besides you cannot upgrade a Laptop this way, so it unlikely these program will run on most Laptops.

which dell laptop is best for video editing and graphics purpose?

Suman

I am searching a laptop for video editing and graphics job. Also i want to do compilation of software and web development job through laptop. I need a such type of laptop of DELL company. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Suman,

As you want to use the system for video editing and graphics intensive applications, I would suggest that you order a system with discrete video card, or better still, one with NVidia Optimus or AMD Switchable Graphics technology, that can utilize both integrated and discrete Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). This would allow you to use the discrete GPU for graphic intensive applications and integrated one for normal use to save power. The system should also have a good processor and maximum possible memory.

As you would be using the system for work, getting a Solid State Drive (SSD) instead of a regular hard drive would also be a great idea. SSD does not have moving parts like a conventional hard drive, and therefore, is less prone to failure, providing better data safety.

A custom configured Dell XPS would be my choice for the job. You may look for, customize and order a Dell laptop on the following link:

Hope this helps.

thanks
Kinda on a budget so keep it under $4000

Answer
lol a 4000 dollar budget is enormous so you don't have to really have to give up on any performance. If you want video editing your gonna need a lot of ram and processing power because video editing is very ram/cpu intensive. Typing scripts can be accomplished on any computer -.- with notepad. For internet you may want to go for a wireless-n built in or better. If your using it for school you might want pre-built in software suchs as microsoft office. And if you want good videos go for a higher end video card. Hope that helps.
