What is the best video camera and editing software to use to make movies?

Mike DeMor

I have been working on a movie, but I want to know what a really good camera would be to film it. My friend has a Sony dcr-sr47 and I haven't used it so I don't know how well it is with video quality and audio. I was also looking into buying a Canon FS300, so I would like to know which is better, or if there is a camera better for under $500. I am also looking into editing software for my movies. From what I hear, Vegas Movie Studio 9 is pretty good, but I'm unsure.

Answer
Any good digital camera will work. I have GE 8.0 megapixel E850 that works wonders. I also got a Sony Handicam DCR SX-40 that works great too. I have a mini adjustable tripod and a regular tripod that goes up to 50" which is great for my Handicam. A camera with a zoom lense like my GE(won it off of eBay for around $50 with s/h.), will work wonders. My GE came with a video editing software, Arcsoft with Photo and Video Impressions. I can't think of the program my Handicam came with. I have Windows Movie Maker too. If you're willing to go an extra mile since you want to invest in a Canon, you may want to try a video editing program like Pinnacle Studio. You can do all kind of things with this program. Try a trial version and see if it's something you would like to spend money on.

What is a better video editing software: Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas 9?

Nicholas

I'm an inspiring filmmaker and i currently own the Pinnacle Studio editing software. I'm not really a big fan of it and I'm purchasing a new video editing software but i'm not sure which one of these video editing softwares are better and more professional: Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas 9?
I'd like to hear some anwsers from some profession filmmakers, or professional post-production people...if possibe.

Answer
Adobe is better than vegas, i think. You could also try womble mepg video wizard, I use it with adobe in combination.

Suman

I am searching a laptop for video editing and graphics job. Also i want to do compilation of software and web development job through laptop. I need a such type of laptop of DELL company. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Suman,

As you want to use the system for video editing and graphics intensive applications, I would suggest that you order a system with discrete video card, or better still, one with NVidia Optimus or AMD Switchable Graphics technology, that can utilize both integrated and discrete Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). This would allow you to use the discrete GPU for graphic intensive applications and integrated one for normal use to save power. The system should also have a good processor and maximum possible memory.

As you would be using the system for work, getting a Solid State Drive (SSD) instead of a regular hard drive would also be a great idea. SSD does not have moving parts like a conventional hard drive, and therefore, is less prone to failure, providing better data safety.

A custom configured Dell XPS would be my choice for the job. You may look for, customize and order a Dell laptop on the following link:

Hope this helps.

What would be the best laptop for video editing?

Joe E

I know this is a very general question, but in your opinion, what would be the best laptop for under $1300 that is good for video editing (I would also use it for school work, web browsing, movies and music)?
But couldn't I get a much better quality laptop with much better components thats not a mac for cheaper?

Answer
Well, I hear a lot of good about Apple, and I am sure they are good for video editing, but Mac's are generally expensive.

If you prefer to get a PC, I know the perfect one for you. It's an HP Pavilion dv6000 (also called the "HP Pavilion Entertainment PC"). It cost me $1209 with all tax, but included a free HP all-in-one printer (scanner, etc). There are many free inclusive programs. There is this one called Cyberlink Power Producer, it is by far the best I've used yet. I made a full DVD for my friend's birthday, with content about her. It has a full DVD menu, custom background of her & me, and I chose which scene I want on each page, and the style of buttons, etc. I even have background music on the menu. It allows me to make scenes, add subtitles, add transition effects, add audio, add music, add video, pictures, etc. You can even add effects such as snowfall, water rippling, and much much more. You can capture content directly from the program, as there is a built in webcam & microphones. You can even capture content from video cameras that are attached to the comp, it automatically detects theme. I honestly love this computer, and I look forward to producing even more videos. Even if you are just doing something simple, it can do it. It can extract audio from video too. Also, you can save as many file types, depending on what you are making (DVD video, data disc, etc.)

And the laptop has 250GB hard drive, and 3GM RAM, never lags, runs smooth. Also has a fingerprint scanner, works amazingly. My HP laptop is intended for my next 5 years of university, so I do expect it to last :) And it has many free programs, I still haven't tried them all yet.

Answer
Yes it's easy but if video is your concern, you would be much better off with the more controllable digital camcorder. DSLR's were never meant to do video.

Here is what the professionals use.
The new Sony Vaio AW-Series is an 18.4-inch laptop aimed at photographers. Full coverage of the Adobe RGB colour space offers total accuracy for editing, thanks to the 3LED back lighting system also found on Sonyâs Bravia TVs. The AW-Series comes with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom as well as Adobe Photoshop Elements pre-installed. The VAIO AW-Series has an Intel Core 2 Duo T9600 processor, NVIDIA 512MB GeForce 9600M GT graphics card, 128GB Solid State Disk and a 500GB SATA drive. Price and availability to be announced.

rawing on its strengths in the field of display design and refining them to a new level, VAIO has created a new class of portable. It has screen technologies never seen on a notebook, from the massive 18.4-inch diagonal and Full HD resolution to its 3LED backlighting system. Whether you are editing photographic images or HD video, or simply enjoying an HD movie, this means the best possible picture quality. Put this together with Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution and you have the screen by which others will be judged.

The AW-Series comes with Adobe Photoshop® Lightroom® as well as Adobe Photoshop Elements, providing users with some of the very best photo-editing software tools available. Sony original software including Image Data Converter, Picture Motion Browser and α setting plug-in for Adobe Photoshop Lightroom further enhance the appeal to serious photographers. As well as the convenience provided by the settings plug-in, owners of Sonyâs α DSLR will experience the quiet pleasure of seeing an echo of the cameraâs design aesthetic in the distinctive and beautiful finishes available for the AW-Series.

The huge Full HD display offers true 16:9 widescreen, so when you play a movie on the integrated Blu-ray Disc⢠drive, you are treated to superbly cinematic visuals. Dolby® Home Theatre audio signal processing and 2.1 channel speakers complete the mini-cinema effect, with enhanced bass from the integrated sub-woofer as well as immersive surround sound. Should you prefer, an HDMI⢠output lets you the whole High Definition audiovisual experience to an HD TV or Home Theatre.

From a technical standpoint, the VAIO AW-Series is as impressive behind the scenes as from the front. Everything you need for outstanding multimedia performance is there, from the Intel® Core⢠2 Duo T9600 processor, power 3D graphics courtesy of NVIDIAâs® 512MB GeForce® 9600M GT and a very special combination of disk technologies. In a world first, 128GB of Solid State Disk (SSD) Flash memory works together in a RAID array with the 500GB SATA drive to boost performance when working with large files, which are stored on the SSD for extremely fast access.

Whats the best video editing software for rendering a video with 100% quality?

Kanak

I need the name of the video editing software which can render videos exactly the same quality as the source video file. It's not Adobe Premiere, because it takes almost a day to render a video of 30 minutes in uncompressed format. Besides the rendered file requires a huge space, for example, 10 GB.
So, have any suggestions?

Answer
You don't say if you are using HD or SD video, I'll assume you are using HD...

Anything that can handle the H.264 (MPEG) CODEC.

I have tried all sorts and this seems to be the best one so far. OK, I use Premiere Pro CS5, but even in that, out of all of them, for small size against quality, the H.264 one seems to be the way to go.
You can get better ones, but at the price of very large file sizes.

What is the best video editing software for Mac to make music videos?

Jim A

I want to make a music video where I record the music and then line the video up with the music afterwards. iMovie 09 doesn't allow you to put down music and then drag the video to the specific point you want. Also I find Final Cut Express isn't that great for it neither. Or for that fact After Effects also.

Can someone please tell me some good software for making good music videos. I'm running OS X Leopard. Thank you.

Answer
The "best" would be the strictly professional, production-quality editors. Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere, and Final Cut Pro are the major players.

After Effects isn't an editor, Premiere is. Final Cut Express is a watered down version of Final Cut Pro.

Remember, you get what you pay for. You want the best, expect to pay for the best. These editors cost upwards of $700, not including the cost of hardware needed to run them.

Need Help on How to transfer video files from my video cam to WMP?

J L

I have a JVC Everio and though the video files play on WMP, they wont transfer to the Library. I need them to be on my computer so I can make a movie in Windows Movie Maker. if anyone could help it'd be greatly appreciated as i have a big video project due tomorrow. Thanks!

Answer
Windows Movie Maker is not the best way! But, it may be that the codec used on Everio is not on your PC although WMP plays the file - so check that first (JVC manual for starters). Then see if you can open the movie files in Movie Maker, without going via the library. If not - have you any other editing software, Nero Vision for example? That will play and edit almost anything - download the 30 day trial and do your project.

video editing software on macbook pro image

Jean

I currently use Vegas in Windows 7 and I hate 8.

So if I get a 13-inch: 2.9 GHz (i7) with a SSD Macbook Pro. What is the best video editing software?

Answer
Why? Are you planning to work in the video editing business? If so, think twice about buying a dinky little notebook for real work. You need a Mac Pro. No video editor uses fewer than three displays. No notebook can use more than two.

For software, 49% of pro movie editors use Final Cut Pro, with Avid Media Composer users at a distant second place 22%. No one in Hollywood uses Sony.

Is there a loss of quality when using Final Cut Pro for AVCHD videos?

Mael

Hi, I have a Sony HDR-TG1 and a Macbook Pro. I am looking for a good video editing software that will allow me to work with my camera's AVCHD format. I have read a lot of things about Final Cut Pro and how it doesn't support AVCHD without conversion. I was wondering if there is a loss of quality that arises from the conversion or if the video is just as good?

If the video quality isn't as good, can you please recommend a different program for me to use?
Thanks!

Answer
Any conversion reduces quality, its just a fact! its always better to edit the video in its original format, AVCHD is a nightmare, highly compressed, when you try to edit it, your computer will have to do a lot of work, secondly what medium are you going to use to play it back. posting on youtube quality is not an issue because by the time they have compressed your video, the quality will not be that good. putting onto DVD then you dont need HD, you cannot play hd video on a DVD, the last two options are Bluray and playback from your computer.

There is nothing wrong with FCP, Personally I use Adobe CS5, I have used adobe products for years, so I stick with them

Where can i find a good video editor for free?

video editing software 2013

video editing software 2013 image

Marlin

I need a good video editor that does not cost anything.

Answer
here are some free video editing software

1) Windows Movie Maker 2.6 : Microsoft has made version 2.6 of Movie Maker available for download, and it runs on both Windows Vista and Windows 7. While advanced users are likely using a more sophisticated video editing program, thereâs no denying that Movie Maker is an excellent, full-featured option for the average home user.

2) VirtualDub : VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows platforms (98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/Vista/7), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

3) T@b ZS4 Video Editor : ZS4 Video Editor is free to download and use. It is video editing and compositing software which aims to provide media experts with a facility to combine a variety of media types(currently photos, videos and audio files) into one or more output files.

Whats the best 2013 Chroma Key software i can use to edit my videos?

Question

I want to make youtube videos with awesome background i figured the only way to do that is with chroma key. Please help me find the best Chroma key software that is up to date to edit my videos.

Answer
After Effects is the best for green/blue screen work. Premiere Pro also has the ability to do that. Final Cut Pro, Sony Vegas, Power Director are also options but they're not the best. After Effects is what the professionals use. The name of the plugin in AE is "Keylight" and it has a lot of tweakable features, enabling you to get the best keying possible. If you want free, you might be able to do it with Lightworks (http://www.lwks.com).

What is the best laptop for video editing?

FireHawk

I love video editing! I have had a Desktop PC for a long time and done some great work with it however, I am ready to move to something more advanced than what I have been doing (Windows Movie Maker). Since I want a new computer, I might as well go portable. I like Apple's macbooks, but I wanted to see if there were any other computers that offered everything that macs offer and maybe more features for less $$$. Any Suggestions?

Answer
Hi FireHawk,
video editing requires a powerful and speedy machine. Many of their laptops
are designed for video games, which means that their multi-media capabilities are top of the line. Though Alienware is one of the best, Hewlett-Packard is good too. Make sure to get quality graphics and audio cards. nVIDIA makes great graphics cards while Audigy sound cards are best for real-time editing.

Try Alienware M17X - Laptop with IntelCore 2 Quad Processor, 17" LCD, 4GB RAM, 500GB HARD DRIVE - Intel Core 2 Quad Processor,

Need a video editor that lets me edit the video and audio tracks seperately?

Cris B

I got some episodes of FLCL dubbed in English, but the dubs start too late. I need a free (if possible) video editing software that'll let me move the audio track back so that it'll sync up with the video correctly. A cheap editing software that does this would work as well, but I'm looking to spend as little as possible.

Answer
You can do this with VirtualDub, but correcting poorly synced audio tracks can be a real pain in the posterior.

http://www.videohelp.com has tutorials on demuxing audio / correcting audio delay, and links to the SourceForge.net page for VirtualDub and its sister, VirtualDubMod (which most of the audio correcting tutorials will probably tell you to use).

Again, what you want to do is technical and will require several programs and quite a bit of time to get right. Once you get it set up right, though, you should be able to shoot right through the work with the same / similar methods and settings.

What are some good, free video editing software?

Q. I really need a good video editing software that can let me do the 'brady bunch effect"

Answer
If you're using Windows Xp or Vista

Windows Movie Maker is included

Otherwise, i'd suggest Pinnacle VideoSpin

Get it free here

http://www.videospin.com/Redesign/

Those are for home users and amateurs.
If you're talking about the more advance video editing software then get
Avidemux

Avidemux is an open source tool for DVD/DivX converting and editing.

What laptop of these three should I choose?

good laptop for video editing 2012
on ok this is cute but would you really pay $ 35 for this for a 1 year ...
good laptop for video editing 2012 image

Jn Dan

All are Pre-Ovned BTW
So the first one is an Acer Aspire S3 with a Core i7, Intel HD graphics, 13 inch display, 20Gb SSD+500GB HDD W7 along with couple of programs (Microsoft Office 2010 Professional, Magix Web Designer 7 Premiuim, Magix Music Maker MX)
The other one is an Hp 15-B109EO Ultrabook Core i5, GT 630M (2GB), 32GB SSD+750GB HDD, W8
Then the last one is a mid 2012 13 inch macbook air.
I will be using it for college, mainly video editing, along with music and video editing. People say that Macs are the best for media edting, is that true? But which one suits my need the best? I'm swifting towards the HP, because of the powerful hardware, but which one should I choose?

Answer
Macs are better at media, mainly because of the OS and applications developed for them. However, the intel integrated graphics performance in the macbook air will be much inferior to the graphics of the HP. If you go with windows, I should choose the HP over the Acer.
The plus of the mac is that it will come preinstalled with good basic audio and video editors, (garageband and iMovie) and final cut is a good upgrade from that if you want to take the editing further. You may find rendering and things to be a little slow on the macbook air though :/

Windows is less media based, not really and decent programs preinstalled (windows movie maker sucks) But things like premier elements (adobe video editor) are good editors to buy if you do go with windows! the rendering will be quicker!

Does my LLC have to claim a Depreciation deduction on taxes?

Russell

I am looking to wrap-up a failed LLC this year, but I am doing taxes for last year. The business was completely on location - shooting video and editing on a laptop on location. There were no expenses, except depreciation expense. It had only $95 of revenue in 2012. As I am working through these IRS forms for claiming depreciation expenses, I am wondering if I HAVE to claim them with the time I'm spending on the taxes and the revenue levels that I had. I'd be willing to pay $95 of taxes just to get this nightmare over with. Arghhh!!!

Answer
You aren't required to claim the depreciation expense, but you are required to reduce your basis by the amount of depreciation you would have been allowed if you had claimed it.

i need a good video editing software that supports mov files to put videos together. I'm using a Canon Rebel T2i to record and also i have Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 program but that doesn't support mov files. Can someone help me please? I need it to start doing videos again :)

Answer
A .mov file is a container that can contain many formats of video and audio. Adobe Premiere works fine with .mov files if you install Quicktime but the old CS3 version may not handle the newer formats such as H.264 used by the Rebel T2i.

The free Squared 5 MPEG StremClip does a good job of converting between various formats to create a file you can use.

What laptop should I get for audio editing and some video game performance for US$1100?

best laptop for video audio editing image

groovekart

Hello! I am planning to study sound engineering and I need a laptop that I can use for my school (and hopefully in the future, work) projects. Since this is my first laptop purchase ever, and I'm selling my desktop to help fund for it, I want it to have some desktop-replacement quality.

I don't really need a souped-up video game machine (for US$1100, who am I kidding anyway), but I want it to be able to keep up with current and near-future video game hardware requirements. The audio editing part is most important though. Do I need a separate sound card to do audio work, like midi sequencing, basic recording and the like?

I'm currently torn between the Dual-core incarnations of the HP Pavilion and the Gateway MX. Which is better? Do you suggest any other laptop out there?

Thanks! :D

Answer
Here is a great laptop from Compusa.com, they are almost sold out! A great price too, except I would upgrade the Video Card and RAM (double it at least).

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=BROWSE&N=200334+502365&Ne=502360&product_code=329133&Pn=Pavilion_zd8220us_Notebook#ts

Compare this laptop (Pavilion zd8220us Notebook) to these other ones (Pavilion dv6113us Notebook, Pavilion dv8408us Notebook, Pavilion dv2130us Notebook). These last three almost don't compare except for dv6113us which has twice the Bus Speed than the zd8220us (1.6 GHz vs. 800 MHz). But 800 MHz is better than 667 MHz or 533 MHz. But you should notice that even though the dv6113us has 1.6 GHz Bus Speed, it only has 2 x 256 KB L2 Cache Size. Once again, going back to the processor, it is a single core, but with HT, and it's twice as fast as the other two, bigger screen, and Bluetooth capability as well. So with the one this one's priced, you can upgrade it, and get yourself some accessories, as well! Hard Drive speed is kinda slow, but you can get that upgraded as well. Anyhow make up your mind fast. Read the reviews, don't blame me if I didn't point somethings out. And oh yea, I win! Again!

Would upgrading from 3gb of ram to 6gb of ram speed up my computer?

joey

I have a dell n5030 laptop
dual core pentium processor 2.3ghz
3gb ddr3 ram
320gb hdd
64bit windows 7

I do a lot of multitasking and stuff. Things that my computer doesn't really like to do is: itunes (have 15 + gb of music), video and audio encoding, video and audio editing, and hd video.

I also already know how to change the ram

Answer
Upgrading might make things a little faster, but not much.

You only benefit from going to 6GB if you're currently running out of RAM, and that only happens when you're keeping a LOT of multitasking... keeping 9+ windows open, or doing very memory intensive-work (like really big editing jobs in Photoshop, AutoCad etc). More RAM would allow you to open more windows without slowing down dramatically.

Having 6GB would help video editing because that requires a lot of RAM, but your video editing/encoding speeds are mostly dependent upon how fast/powerful your CPU is, and yours isn't very strong. It's a good CPU for everyday usage, but not audio/video editing work.

A dual-core Pentium isn't good for demanding tasks like that, and laptop CPUs are weaker than desktop CPUs with the same model number. A 3.0Ghz quad-core desktop CPU is the baseline for good performance in those tasks, and a Core i5 or better yet, Core i7 is what's really recommended.

To display HD video smoothly you need an entry-level or better graphics card. RAM won't help with that.

Or if you know any other free and safe downloadable video editing software. Thank you for any of your help you can provide me with!

Answer
He uses a chroma key capable software. He films himself in front of a green screen (or green or blue bedsheet, works just as well). Then uses software to replace the background color with the background graphic of his choice. VSDC Free Video Editor can easily do this:

Good Cameras for Photography and Filming?

Rodney

In the upcoming summer of 2013 my class is taking a trip to Europe, I obviously want to take as many pictures as possible and want them to look great. But I have also been thinking about purchasing some video editing software to make some short movies with friends too.

I would like to keep the price range around 750 dollars. Give or take a few. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Windows Movie Maker (WMM) is the wort software I've ever seen for video editing. If you want something better it would be (like Samuel Adams said). "The top 3 video edting software choices for the PC is Ulead Video Studio, Adobe Premiere Elements and Sony Vegas. These programs are not free, but you can download a free trial from their Web sites."

For free software you must search GPL software. I did and there are not many options. The one I found for Windows (Virtual Dub) does not make widescreen but is very good compared to the WMM limitations. Or at least for Windows. Still the free video editor that comes with Mac is very good.

Still if your videos where made 4,3 (old TV style), if you make them 16,9 (Widescreen) they might not look so good...

Where can i find a good video editor for free?

I don't think building one is a viable option because components where I live are overpriced and don't get cheaper enough as time passes. I need a computer just for the things I stated and I have no interest in either gaming or video editing.

What do you think I should get?
Do you have any specific brand model in mind?

Brand buying advice

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

:)

What exactly am I looking for in a laptop?

Kerri

As in processor, ram and harddrive. etc. I am a student and it would be used for student purposes, no gaming but also video editing.

I really like Dell. I love their customer service and I love my laptop that is now 4 and have never had a serious problem with it.

Answer
Dell is a good brand especially because of their warranty, but many people that i know don't buy the warranty. i suggest getting a Lenovo because they are pretty cheap, reliable, and right up there in ratings with Sony, unless you can find a Sony for a good price.

here are some good laptop deals that i found but you will have to act fast because they are in the weekly adds

http://www.frys.com/product/7544506#detailed

http://www.frys.com/product/7340324?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

The two above say in the frys add that they go for $549.

Hope this helped.
