Good laptop for Video editing?

Jesus

What is a good laptop for video editing? I recently had mine stolen and I wanted to know what specs are best? Other than lots of RAM

All under a fare price Im on a budget.
If you know any way to make a custom one please describe thank you so much!

( I know Laptops aren't the best for editing but I like the portable aspect of it )

Answer
For video editing, you need to look for a laptop that has the following:

1. Dedicated GPU(video card)

Without a dedicated GPU, video editing will be very difficult and slow. ALWAYS buy a laptop with a dedicated GPU. In most laptops you can upgrade the RAM and CPU, but the GPU is either soldered to the motherboard or is manufactured differently for each model.

2. RAM

8gb should be fine, just so long as your not dealing with resolutions greater than 1080p. Not as important as having a dedicated GPU, but still a necessity if you plan on doing any kind of video editing or 3D modeling. My advice to you, is to purchase a less expensive laptop, and just upgrade the RAM. It's a lot cheaper, and you get to chose your own manufacturer and memory configuration.

3. SSD

Not a necessity, but loading your OS onto an SSD will dramatically shorten boot/shutdown times, and give your OS system a noticeable speed boost.

4. CPU

Last, but not least is the CPU. If you plan on doing any serious video editing, you will need at least a second generation i3 or better. Word of warning though: STAY AWAY FROM AMD MOBILE CPUs!!. You might be able to get an AMD quad-core for the price of an Intel dual-core i3, but since most programs aren't optimized to run on multiple threads, you will just end up with 4 cores, and a slow computer.

What kind of laptop and specs are best for music/video recording and editing?

Ryan

My band is getting serious about recording, and instead of going to a studio we'd like to do it ourselves.

My one friend's band.. they do everything from his MacBook and it all sounds like they produce recordings that are studio-quality.

I'm also an extreme gamer.. MMORPG / FPS's.. which is the downfall of me investing in a MacBook.. as City of Heroes/Villians I don't believe is mac-compatible; nor are many other games. :P

So any suggestions on laptop specifications i should look for, for cutting-edge recordings, video editing, and gaming?

Answer
For editing and recording music, a minumum of 1GB of memory and at least 2.0GHz is recommended. You should consider buying a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092.

Free edit Video Software?

Rodrigo

please no matter if logo comes after I do the video

Answer
There are a number of free video editors depending upon your needs. Since you didn't specify what kind of formats you need to edit or the featuresets your looking for I'll just recommend some generic applications that are all open source or free.

Movica: http://vani.bhargav.googlepages.com/movica
(Windows Only) Edits WMV and MPEG files using a simple interface.

Open Movie Editor: http://www.openmovieeditor.org/
(Linux Only) Full featured NLE.

Windows Movie Maker: Comes with most installations of Windows and provides limited NLE functionality for WMV file formats.

Virtualdub: http://www.virtualdub.com/
(Windows Only) Video transcoder with support for limited editing capability.

There are lots more, check out http://www.sf.net for open source projects and http://www.versiontracker.com or to search for a number of commercial and freeware products.

Finally if you're looking for a commercial NLE that is free, you can search the web for "Avid Free DV." It's no longer provided by Avid but it is available from many websites still. It contains limited functionality from the Avid full commercial version but it's still highly capable and quite useful for low-end projects.

Basic editing is good with Windows Movie Maker. For voice changing is Audacity, you need to import the mp3 and chance the pitch.

Well you can get a free torrented/cracked version of Vegas Pro 8.0 Its an awesome software, but I'm not responsible if you get caught getting free stuff.

Software for video editing, compatible with Canon 550d?

Rachael

Hello, I wouldn't usually ask this, and I feel kind of silly. But I recently bought myself a Canon550d, and the videos are beautiful quality, etc.. I assume that this question could also be applied for other Canon's that use video, but I cannot seem to edit them. I can't put them into any programmes as they're not "supported file types". Does anyone know of a solution, or can tell me what they use? Maybe I need to do something different on my actual camera? I just find it hard to believe that the cameras videos wouldn't be compatible with both iMovie and Windows Movie Maker, aaaaah, help? :)

HD Videos canon EOS 550d?

Jhen C

I have recorded videos with my canon 550d and now i want to edit it with windows movie maker but it wont import? why? and what should i do.

Answer
well to edit eos 550d video you need professional video editor software ,
windows movie maker does not support hd video ,
more over , windows movie maker does not accepts , mov video , and canon records mov video .
so in order to use windows movie maker first you will need to convert mov file either to wmv or avi format then it would accept it .

there is paid program called xvideo converter which can convert the mov to any other format of you choice.

Whats The Best Video Editing software?

HockeyEqui

Like whats smosh and fred and those other famous youtubers use? For under 30$
or free

IT HAS TO HAVE ALOT OF TRANSITIONS AND THINGS LIKE THAT WITH IT TOO THOUGH

Answer
think movie maker is the best free movie making software, but in my personal experience you may be disappointed at the output effects,Crude and simple.
To make better slideshows you you need more advanced and professioanl but still user friendly software.
I have used a few video editing programs and the easiest one has been DVD Slideshow Builder. Very easy to use with professional features and same sort of layout as Movie Maker however a lot more powerful.

Good and cheap home video editing software?

MFB

I need to buy a simple and cheap home movie editing program to edit the little films I take with my digital camera and format them for DVD. Does anyone have suggestions?

Answer
Video editing software that adds music and narrations. These programs can link together short video clips. One warning: Video editing demands a lot of computer resourcesâeach hour of video requires 13 gigabytes of hard drive space. You will need at least 512 megabytes of RAM. Anything less will slow down your computer considerably.

1. Windows Movie Maker. If you have Windows XP, you should have Windows Movie Maker 2 (Windows XP only). Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Windows Movie Maker. If you donât find it, you can download it from Microsoft's Web site (www.microsoft.com). Microsoftâs Web site offers a number of tutorials.

You can assemble clips using the storyboard view. This allows you to drag and drop clips into little boxes at the bottom of your screen (you can change the order of these boxes, too). When you find the order you like, you can add over 50 transitions (fades, dissolves, wipes, etc.) that will link your clips together.

Video effects will slow down, speed up or blur your video. Thereâs even an effect that can turn portions of your video into a watercolor painting.

The timeline view allows you to add music, titles or narration.

2. Avid Free DV (www.avid.com/freedv, Windows XP; Mac OS X 10.4.2 or later) offers a fraction of Avidâs other (and costly) video-editing programs. But it does have some of the features of the full version of Avid.

There are over a dozen free video tutorials on Avidâs Web site.

Avid Free DV allows you to trim video, edit audio and create titles. Its timeline utilizes two video and two audio tracks and 16 video effects.

3. VirtualDub (www.virtualdub.org; Windows 95 and later)is a very fast, full-featured program.

The video-editing capabilities are limited, but it allows you to trim video and adjust audio. VirtualDub is known for its filters: adjust the brightness; sharpen the picture; blur clips together; rotate pictures; etc. Then you can view the before effects and after effects in the two windowsâhere you can cancel the filter effects.

For the more advanced there is:
Adobe www.adobe.com
Pinnacle www.pinnaclesys.com
Ulead www.ulead.com
Cost: less than $100.

What is good free video-editing software I can download?

Shanaynay

I would like a software that has good video effects other than the basics.

Answer
Well if you have a mac try imovie or on the apple page, search downloads and go to the side bar and move your mouse over All Downloads, then click video there will be tons of effect and editing programs

Need advice, recommendations for a laptop to be used as a video editing workstation?

Nickname

I currently am using a Dell XPS 3.6 ghz, 1GB RAM, 250GB HD running a consumer version of Avid called Pinnacle Studio (v10 Plus). Problem is this is my "everything" computer (Internet, MP3s, documents, spreadsheets) so it bogs down when I try to do relatively simple video editing projects. I want a dedicated, reliable, powerful yet somewhat inexpensive system that has a small footprint. Considering a MacBook with Final Cut Pro but that could get a bit pricey.

Answer
You may want to re-consider using a laptop for that task. Usually laptops can't handle huge video/image file editing, you may want to use a desktop. The reason being is that desktops can handle more power. Don't go with a brand name computer, buy a clone computer that is upgradable. You can select every peripheral at a time, this way you an optimize every component. You do need to go with brand name parts, such as Intel, WesterDigital, ATI and so on. Let me know how it goes. zermenoj@yahoo.com

What's a nice inexpensive laptop that comes with a good installed editing program?

I would like to get an editing software like the MacBook's ($999) which i was looking to get, but way outta my price range.
my price range is around $400.
And for editing videos.
But i thought the MacBook comes with a free video editing program?

Answer
good luck rendering videos with a computer thats under $400. i strongly suggest saving up more money. save up enough money to buy a computer with an Intel i5 proccesor atleast if you want to do videos editing.

if you dont want to do that then make absolutly sure that the computer you get has a dual core proccessor. Intel processor are generally better than AMD. go for atleast 4Gb of RAM. and i would suggest buying an external hard drive to hold all the videos, cause in your $$ range the harddrive will fill up FAST.

As for a program for editing there are plenty of free softwares that any Windows computer can download off the internet. i would suggest asking which one is the best under the computers>software section of Yahoo answers.

Answer
You can find reviews of laptops at CNET. They have reviews for the latest laptops on the market.
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/?tag=hdr;brandnav
I recommend DELL laptops, because in my opinion they make the best laptops out there. I still use my DELL Inspiron 1501 that's nearly 5 years old. Take a look at this laptop.
It's called DELL Inspiron 15R and it's cheap and I think it's bes for the price. Specs:

Processor 2nd Generation Intel® Core⢠i5-2430M processor 2.40 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.00 GHz
Operating SystemGenuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64-Bit, English
Display15.6" High Definition (720p) LED Display with TrueLifeâ¢
Memory34GB3 Single Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz
Hard Drive 500GB4 SATA hard drive (5400RPM)
Optical Drive 8X Tray Load CD/DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive) with Roxio Creator 2011
Video CardIntel HD Graphics/HD Graphics 3000 with up to 1.6GB Dynamic Video Memory
Warranty1 Year Mail-in Repair in 10-14 days after Remote Diagnosis
Weight5.84 lbs

Price: $600

The only thing that sucks is the graphics card. It has Intel VGA, which is not suited for gaming. However, there's a more expensive version of this laptop, which costs $724 and has a dual graphics card. Specs:

Processor 2nd Generation Intel® Core⢠i5-2430M processor 2.40 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.00 GHz
Operating SystemGenuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64-Bit, English

Video CardAMD Radeon⢠HD 6470M (64-bit) 512MB (Dual)
Warranty1 Year Basic Support

I think this laptop is worth the money.

EDIT: I know many things for computers for a 15 year old kid. My goal is to become a programmer and I am very interested in technology. However, I'm not a gamer, so therefore I don't know much about gaming.

15 inch 2011 Macbook pro or 2010 for video editing?

icefireboy

I am going to be doing the 12 month payment thing for either one but still i want it to be as low as possible. I will be editing a lot hd videos on final cut express 4 which i will buy with the computer. I think i will be getting 8gb of ram i heard its good for video editing. Now i wont be gaming so none of those answers. And should i just go with the cheaper 2010 15 inch or go with the 2011? Also with the refurbished ones how. Can i add the option to add the $200 for 8gb ram.

Answer
For video? You need as many processor cores as you can spare cash for.

The new 15" and 17" MacBook Pro's have quad cores (hyperthreading doubles to 8 cores) and 64 bit processors, the 2010 have dual cores and 32 bit processors..

The 64bit allows you to have 8GB of RAM, the 32bit only uses 3.6GB, so you want the new 2011 models for sure unless you plan to ditch the computer in a year or two anyway.

You also need dedicated graphics, even if you don't 3D game, for video as the inferior integrated graphics makes the CPU overheat, which restricts performance as it self-hobbles to keep the heat down.

Video needs a lot of performance, a desktop MacPro would be ideal as a video platform for the absolute best performance (twice as much as a top of the line MacBook Pro), but you lack portability.

If you go cheap and 32 bit 2010 refurbished, your going to be making a huge mistake as dual cores are on their way out due to their 3.6GB RAM limits. I have 7 year old 15" Intel Core 2 dual, not a bad machine still, but not so much for video.

Quad core 64 bit is the future for the next 10 years and their laptops just came out two weeks ago. :)

Should I get a Mac or a PC laptop for college?

Laura

(Sorry if you aready read my other question, this is similar to it, but a different question)
I am a senior in high school, and am saving up to get a laptop to finish off my senior year, and to go into college with. Should I get a Mac or PC? I was leaning more towards Mac just because I have had TWO PC laptops, that broke and ALWAYS had something wrong with them. My sisters even crashes the printer whenever she plugs it in. So I was thinking about getting the 13" Macbook Air. Is that a good choice? And I am used to using Macs because we use Apple laptops daily in school, so I am very familiar with the operating system. So.... Your opinion? (And I am willing to save up more money for a better laptop, but my max is about $1,200
Thank You! :)

Answer
For video or photo editing or any kind of graphic design, or "general use," Mac is definitely supreme. I'm not even talking about specs (though with any Mac, the specs are great), the operating system is just so clean and easy to work with. Especially iWork, which is Apple's version of Microsoft Office (though Office works on Mac).

I know a lot of people think you're paying for the glowing piece of fruit on the back of the computer when you choose Apple. But I think you're paying for the money that has gone into developing a truly advanced, but yet simple to use operating system. That's why more and more people are switching. Saying that the "software is incompatible" is just plain outdated. And you can't deny that they're beautiful computers designed with top quality hardware and specs. But that's just a bonus.

The 13" Macbook Air is a fine choice for you. Just know that you'll only have 128 GB of storage space, which may not be enough depending on your major. If you'll just plan on storing mostly documents and presentations 128 GB should be fine.

If you want the most for your money, you could buy a refurbished July 2011 Air. This will give you double the storage space for the same price -- all you're sacrificing is a slightly faster processor and slightly better graphics. Here's a link: http://store.apple.com/us/product/G0ME0LL/A

The best thing you can do is get into an Apple store and get your hands on these machines, even before you make the decision: mac or pc. In my experience, the people working at Apple are very helpful in getting you the right computer for your needs.

I hope this helps!

By the way, I'm not "against" PC. If you must go for PC, for whatever reason, make you you choose a solid company, such as HP, Dell, Acer, or Toshiba.

How good is this computer?

Andy Z.

I'm looking to buy a really good computer for gaming, photoshop, adobe after effects, premiere pro, and stuff like that.

AMD 6970m Crossfire? *drools*

That will run most games maxed out, and will be overkill for any video editing software. Compared to a Mac (as mentioned by another person), that laptop will out preform a top of the line MacPro (desktop)

9.9/10

However, this laptop, upgraded with Nvidia 485 SLI would be even stronger (10/10)

hollywood video editing software?

Mr NO-IT-A

what is the main program hollywood uses for effects like explosions?

Answer
Well there is no one program, but I'm pretty sure Adobe after effects is commonly used both for small and big Hollywood projects. It's certainly capable of producing many of the visual effects you see in Blockbuster films these days.

However it's common to use more than one program to put the video altogether. For example, you might use a 3D renderer to build a 3D environment and then integrate that in Adobe After Effects with some footage you have in front of a green screen. Then you chroma key out the screen in Effects to put yourself in a 3D environment for example.

If interested, links below takes you to the sites, but you can get these two programs for free. Do this by opening a web browser, surfing over to YouTube. Once there, in the search box on that site, enter 'Pinnacle Studio 14' or âSony Vegas Pro 10â. Youâre looking for free download, find a link or video that says that, in the video description, there will be link for a free download. Make sure, before you do this, to make sure your computer can meet or exceed those Specs above, and pay special attention to the AVCHD specs if you have or are going to get a HD camcorder.

A laptop running these Programs, when rendering say a 10 minute Video out, be prepared, render times could leave your laptop useless, while rendering for 4 or 5 days on that file.

Answer
I would recommend getting a Core i7 processor based laptop. The Core i7 processor is Intel's fastest processor for mobile. The Core i7 features smart performance and has both Turbo Boost and Hyper-Threading technology so it can handle up to 8 way multi-tasking and give you a burst of speed when you need it. It does a great job on Photoshop and video editing and many of the Core i7 processor based laptops include powerful video solutions for smooth 3D gaming.

Check out a bunch of Core i7 laptops here in your price range:

How will my laptop work with mass amounts of video, photo, and music editing?

John

I recently bought a 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina Display and had it upgraded to 2.8 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, with TurboBoost up to 3.8GHz and 768 GB of flash storage. I was wondering how well would it work with massive amounts of photo, video, and music editing along with capability to play intense game with hardcore graphics also to hold a lot of storage of constant 10 to 20 minute long videos added a day, can it do all of this without crashing constantly but rarities are accepted and if storage is the only true problem I am willing to get an external storage device. I am posting this because I am a starting photographer, somewhat a director, a student, and overall entertainer. I also am asking because even though when I did the research it all seemed to check out I was wondering if any experts or people with personal experience could shine some light upon this because I've had many laptops that cant seem to handle extensive editing of all kinds from programs like those created by Adobe, and cant handle the storage for the videos and also crash during downloads of high quality games or during the actual gameplay. I'd like to hear many people's opinions and am open to suggestions. Thank you.

Answer
Files in storage do not cause system crashes. To store massive amounts of data, you will need some external drives. My Mac tower had four internal drives and four external drives. I don't use any of my Mac notebooks for video editing, except a bit of touch up on location. I can't deal with intense editing on a tiny 15" screen.

Notebook computers don't play games at highest level all day without some over-heating.... unless the notebook is almost 2 inches thick (Alienware) to allow large fans and air space inside for cooling.

If you use several high-RAM apps simultaneously, such as Final Cut Pro, Photoshop and Handbrake, the system will use scratch space / virtual memory, and that will cause slow operation, but not necessarily a crash.

Notebook computers are designed for multi-tasking on the go, but in recent years, a trend has skyrocketed for "bolting down" a notebook, and using it as if it were a desktop. It would make much more sense for these people to buy a desktop, like the Mac Pro http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/ or an all-in-one, like the iMac.

Buying a laptop for 3D rendering and video/photo editing?

KC

Hello, I'm planning on buying a laptop for using Blender 3D and other editing program like sony vegas, photoshop etc.

So would this spec handle this?

3rd Generation Intel® Ivy Bridge Core⢠i7-3610QM (2.3GHz - 3.3GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache, 45W Max TDP)

nVidia GT 630M 1024MB PCI-Express GDDR3 DX11 with Optimus

8GB - DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)

500gb 7200rpm (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)

I'm planning on buying my laptop from this website

http://www.xoticpc.com/

Answer
To the best of my knowledge that spec laptop would cope very well :) but no matter how good the laptop is, rendering will always take a very long time. I personally use a desktop with an Intel Core2Quad Q8300, ATI Radeon HD5670, 4GB DDR3 (1333mHz) RAM and a 320GB and 2TB SATA2 7200RPM hard drives, and i can edit and render reasonably well.

Answer
Video Editing:

Lightworks; semi-free alternative to Avid ($1,200), Adobe Premiere ($240/year), and Sony Vegas ($600).
http://lwks.com

Lightworks has been used in the movie industry for more than 20 years. Lightworks also has the fastest workflow in the industry.

Lightworks used to cost more than $1,000, but now Lightworks Pro costs $60/year and you can download a free version from their website.

Editors using Lightworks have produced numerous internationally renowned and Oscar and Emmy award-winning feature films and television programs, including The King's Speech, The Departed, Mission Impossible, Braveheart, and Pulp Fiction.

Lightworks is FREE if you don't need pro video codecs and you can use the free version as long as you want.

3D Animation and VFX Compositing:

Blender; free alternative to Maya ($3,700) and After Effects ($240/year).
http://blender.org

Blender has a complete VFX pipeline in one single software package. Blender has tools for modeling, sculpting, rigging, animation, rotoscoping, chroma keying (green screen), motion tracking, smoke, fire, and fluid simulation, particles, destruction, physics, color grading, node compositing, and video editing.

After Effects uses "layer-based" compositing. Blender uses "node-based" compositing similar to Nuke ($4,155); used in the movie industry http://thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke

Blender has more advanced features but After Effects is easier to use.

Blender is 100% free with full functionality, no adware, no spyware, and no viruses, and you're allowed to use Blender in any production without having to pay for anything.

This MSI laptop should be more than good enough for anything you'll ever need it to do.

If thats alittle overkill for what you need then here is a cheaper one that is still pretty decent.

That's simple? And virus free?

Thanks so much for your help. I really appreiciate it. :)

Answer
Photobucket is a great web based and FREE editing tools. The software behind it comes from Adobe who make some of the best commercial ($$$) photo and video editors. Also check out Jaycut which allows you to export and save your videos! If you need/want more features downloading VideoSpin, VideoPad or VideoThang are great options. Still free, but you have to download the software. For under $100 you can buy Adobe Premiere Elements.

There is also new freeware version of Windows Movie Maker that works on Windows Vista, XP and even Windows 7. Microsoft has added and deleted features from each version and this version has all the features from each version plus some extras.

Video editing software?

cset2

I was wondering does anyone know any good video editing software for windows. I have used windows movie maker before and it's okay I actually like it except it is quite basic (and often slow). I am really looking to make videos manly that I would put on Youtube. If anyone has used or knows some good video editing software (I prefer free but willing to pay if it is really good) please let me know. I must be able to add and edit audio in it as well as video, thank you.

Answer
Take a look at the tutorials for Windows Movie Maker at http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Tutorials/ - it may be WMM is all you need. It really is foolproof except that it's picky in what file formats it takes and the lack of native support for multiple video and audio tracks are a definite disadvantage (but there are workarounds).

The version 2 series were probably the most versatile, you can find them here - http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/windows-movie-maker.html - but you'll have problems installing the older versions on Windows 7. Windows Live Movie Maker is still good, but not so versatile.

Other free video editors are...

Wax - http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ - this is also a compositor - a bit like Adobe's After Effects - - unlimited video and audio tracks
VideoLAN Movie Creator - http://videolan.org/vlmc/ - up to 64 audio and video tracks
TrakAxPC - www.trakax.com/software/pc/
VideoSpin - http://videospin.com/ - just 1 video track so you may as well use WMM
VideoPad - the free version - http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/
Lightworks - http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ - I like this one - unlimited tracks ?
Serif MoviePlus - http://serif.com/free-video-editing-software/ - unlimited tracks ?
Ezvid - ezvid.com/ - 32 video and audio tracks

Another is Zwei-Stein. This is a good editor but I found the interface to be absolutely horrible.

VirtualDub, RAD Video tools, AVITricks and Avidemux are also good tools you should look at. Although not full editors like the others they have some useful features.

Lightworks and Wax together are a very good video editing system for free.

All are safe, at least from the sites I've linked to.

If you want to spend some money then there are reviews of 14 video editors under $100 at http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

More costly are video editors like Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere. Both of which are very good. Premiere is probably more advanced but harder to learn everything it can do.

Best video editing software for mac (for watermarking)?

Dogberts

I have some videos which I would like to watermark with my website and then upload. Can anyone recommend any software on the mac for doing this?
Wow Mike M, very detailed response to my issue. I shall try it straight away - many thanks for your time

Answer
I just tried it with QuickTime Pro (in other words, QuickTime Player with a serial number and, therefore, editing features), and I was able to figure it out pretty quickly.

First, open up the movie you want to watermark in QuickTime player. Then drag the image you want to use as a watermark (an image of your website's logo with a transparent background looks best) from the Finder right onto the movie. This doesn't give you quite what you want, as the image only appears for a split second, but it lets QuickTime know what you're working with at least.

Now, press âA (or click "Select All" in the Edit menu) to select the whole length of the movie. In the Edit menu, click "Add to Selection & Scale" to add that image to the movie again, but this time pasting it onto the movie's entire duration.

Then go to the Window menu, and select "Show Movie Properties" (or press âJ). The window that appears will show you the different layers in your QuickTime movie. First of all, you want to select the one that's got a very short duration *and* shows up as an image format (such as PNG, which is what I tested with) â that's the image you first dragged onto there, that only got pasted as a little blip. You can press the "Delete" button above the list to get rid of that one, leaving just the movie, the audio track (if there is one) and your watermark image that lasts as long as the movie does. Select that image layer now, and go to the "Visual Settings" tab underneath.

On the right, there's a box called "Transformation"; in there, there are two text boxes next to the label "Offset". These let you choose where the image appears on your movie, counting in pixels from 0,0 at the top-left corner. (So, if you wanted your watermark at the bottom-right instead, you'd subtract the image's width from the width of the movie and put the result in the first box, then do the same with the heights and the second box.)

On the bottom left of the Properties window â and this is assuming that you're using an image that has transparency â you'll find a drop-down list that's labeled "Transparency". Set this to "Straight Alpha Blend"; this tells QuickTime to make use of the transparency information already in the image (instead of just showing an opaque box around the image), and also gives you a slider you can use to make the watermark more or less transparent.

It may sound confusing, but it kinda makes sense as you go along, and this method doesn't require you to install any software that wasn't on your Mac to begin with. Hope this helps!

what is a good free video editing software with no watermark?

Evan S

like i said before all that i really want is just a free video editing software that works well with no water mark please. thank you for you're help.

Answer
I'm not up on the specs required by the latest Adobe software, but the problem that jumps out to me is the hard drive: It's a 5400rpm unit, you would really want a seperate faster hard drive to act as the video scratch.

The Hard drive in the laptop has to run the system and programmes, if you then add in video data then it's not going to be stable with all those MBs getting chucked around.

You need to get a seperate 7200rpm drive. Lacie do rugged drives with this rotation speed, if you have a firewire port they are also bus powered.

I don't see any reference to the bus speed either, you want 768 or preferably faster. This dictates how quickly the various components can communicate. No point having a fast processor and a fast external drive if the system bus speed is strangling it.

These are why desktops are generally the better option for video editing. Unless you use a mac. Which I do.

4k tv technology help?

Raphael

what kind of graphics card would handle it easily or at all?

Answer
Such cards are available now, but they are very high-end and are designed to go in professional editing systems. Here, for example, is a 4K-capable video capture card with HDMI In and Out, able to handle 4:2:2 and even 4:4:4 formats, as well as 3D:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=892446&is=REG&Q=&A=details

You can probably imagine if the video card is nearly $1K the price for a rig to handle everything else (very fast parallel processing, very high-res monitor, very large/fast HDDs to handle vast amounts of data, etc), not to mention the software package - well, it's pretty top-of-the mountain type stuff.
Just a card for the display costs as much as a cheaper PC:

So, be assured, since people are already buying 4K cameras, and with TV and other manufacturers with $ in their eyes, 4K and 8K are coming. The only problem is, with the speed of technological change, just about anything you get now will be obsolete in a few years when things really start going...

converting pre-keyed 4k footage to 1080p / preserving alphachannel?

-.-

Hi,

i have 4K prekeyed greenscreen footage that someone shot for me but my pc is waaayyyy too shitty to handle this all especially with 2 or 3 video layers. i want to convert them to full HD so my craptop can handle it better but i doubt the alphachannel will be preserved if i convert it. can i convert it into the same foramt any other format but then smaller resolution and with alphachannel or will it be lost anyway?

Answer
Hi Chett:

It might help the discussion if you told us what file format (and not just "DCI 4K" or "4K UHD"; I need file extensions) your green-screen originals are in. And knowing what software (AfterEffects, Inferno, etc.) created the alpha layer & final file would help in finding a suitable transcoder or work-around.

But, even at 1080p (which is double the size of 1080i), most laptops struggle trying to handle HD video files of any type. Tell us what video/effects software packages you run (or try to run) on your laptop.

If you are serious about editing or compositing any HD digital effects footage, you need to invest in a decent multi-core CPU tower with serious RAM & fast hard drives to handle this properly.

Use the "Additional Details" link on the Action Bar's Edit menu to add more info, and we can help further.

hope this helps,

What's the best video editing software?

martiniac

What's the best video editing software I can get for under $100? I need something that will allow me to edit, splice and that is able to work with and convert between all major file types. I would also very much like to capture using the same program. I am using like 4 different programs right now and I absolutely hate working with video because of it. I am just working with home stuff so it doesn't need to be professional grade but I am a perfectionist! Thanks!!

Answer
Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0 is available for students and teachers for around $60, while everyone else pays $100

http://www.adobe.com/products/premiereel/

This would be my reccomendation as it is based off of Adobe Premiere Pro which is an industry standard editor. It allows for joining video clips and then exporting to dvd, ipod, psp, web, other mobile devices.

Here is a good article by PC MAGAZINE:
http://www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1874,4835,00.asp

at the bottom of the article you can compare the many video editors available for under $100

What free software can I download to make and edit videos on my computer?

Surfin B1r

I just would like some suggestions (links would be very helpful) to a free, safe and good quality video editing software and/or video recorder. Somewhat like a webcam that can record what is going on, on my screen, if there are any. Thanks!

Answer
Look on CNET or PC Magazine websites. They have free downloads and reviews of all kinds of software.
