I am looking for a laptop that is somewhat powerful. A laptop that I can get for around $600 or less. It needs to be able to run games like GTA and The Sims. I want a large screen with a good resolution. It doesn't have to have a huge storage, around 200 is all I need. I will be doing everything from video editing to video gaming to surfing the web. Any suggestions?

What is the best laptop for video editing?

I love video editing! I have had a Desktop PC for a long time and done some great work with it however, I am ready to move to something more advanced than what I have been doing (Windows Movie Maker). Since I want a new computer, I might as well go portable. I like Apple's macbooks, but I wanted to see if there were any other computers that offered everything that macs offer and maybe more features for less $$$. Any Suggestions?

What is the best movie making/recording program to use for game play?

Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 is what I, personally use. It's very nice.
If you're just wanting to make gameplay commentaries, then you probably don't even need Pro. You could probably just use Sony Vegas Platinum, which is quite cheaper.
However, if you're wanting to make Montages, I'd highly recommend getting Pro.

If you'd like something else, you can try Adobe Premiere. It's a tad more complex than Vegas, but is also a little better than Vegas. I wouldn't really recommend using it until getting to know Vegas a bit, but it's up to you.

There's also Adobe After Effects which is good for making flashy opening titles. It's very daunting to learn, but can prove worthwhile if you end up mastering it. It's quite mediocre for normal video editing, but is among the best for huge flashy effects.

Now, as for your recording situation, it depends on what you're playing your game on.

If you're on the PC, you can choose from Fraps or WeGame. Fraps is the best, IMO, but will cost you $37 USD. You can try the free trial on their site.

WeGame is completely free, though I find it buggy and at times laggy. You have nothing to lose with it being free, so you can give it a shot.

Now, if you're on a console, you'll need to look into Capture Cards.
Since you said you're looking for HD, you'll need an HD capture card, of course.
I, personally, recommend and use the Hauppauge HD PVR. It's an external capture card, so it's ideal if you have a laptop, since you can just move your laptop and capture card close to your console.

If your console is close (or can be moved) to your computer and it's a desktop, you can look into internal capture cards (however externals will still work).
Internal capture cards have to be on a desktop, since they're directly installed to your computer's outer part.

Is there A way to pull a show off of my TiVo box and transfer it directly onto my PC?

I have the direct TV TiVo box and there are 2 usb ports on the back. I want to pull the shows I recorded off of the tivo hard drive and put it on the hard drive on my laptop to burn it to dvd. Is this possible?

There is a way to Legally Modify (Hack) your DirecTV Tivo (unless it is the R10 Model). It is actually a VERY EASY Upgrade if you have just a LITTLE experience with Computers.
Once the DirecTivo is modified you can then network it to your homes wired/wireless network. Then you can transfer the shows/movies to a networked PC. Then you can edit and burn the shows/movies to DVD. If you would like to do this then read on, I will post quite a bit of info with links for the necessary Software and How To's.

Unfortunately the shows/movies you already have saved on the DirecTivo cannot be transfered this way even after it is modified. the reason this is the case is that DirecTV Encrypts its Digital Signals, so when your DirecTivo is saving the show/movie to the Hard drive it is encrypted. You can transfer the shows in real time to your PC though. To do this you will need a TV Tuner Capture Card for your PC (For a desktop use a PCI TV Tuner Capture Card, for a Laptop use a PCMCIA TV Tuner Capture Card). This will allow you to connect the DirecTivo to your PCs Capture card via Coaxial, RCA Audio/Video Cables, or S-Video and RCA Audio Cables. Then you will press PLAY on the DirecTivo and Record on the Capture Cards Software. Like I said this will record in real time, so a 2 hour movie will take 2 hours to transfer. Once it is saved on your PCs hard drive you can then edit the show/movie then burn it to DVD.

First check out site #1 it has forums that explain how to hack your DirecTV Tivo and Tivo brand Tivo's so that you have Networking abilities on your D Tivo which allow MRV (multiroom Viewing if you have more than one D Tivo), HMO (Home media Option) which allows you to have a PC connected to your home network that can be used as a server for your MP3's and Pictures to be shown on your D Tivo. Once you hack the unit/s (HAS TO BE A SERIES 1 OR SERIES 2 DirecTV Tivo or Series 1 and Series 2 Tivo) you can apply some programs so that you can download the shows/movies from the decrypted programs stored on your D Tivo onto a PC for veiwing/Burning onto a DVD. If you have more questions I can give you alot more details if you email me. I have used these site below to aid me in Hacking 5 DirecTV Tivos (Qty2-SD-DVR40, HDVR2,Qty2- DSR704). I have HMO, MRV, can access over the internet with gotomydvr.com, can download shows/movies from all the units.
Site #2 is where you purchase the software necessary to upgrade the D Tivo, look for either their kits or if you want to upgrade yourself look at InstantCake 3.1 or 6.2, PTVnet, Slicer. (InstantCake is the operating system/ software displays you see on the screen, PTVnet is the software to boot the ISO disk you download onto your PC when you connect a NEW harddrive and it enables the USB ports and allows networking, The Slicer lets you get/receive upgrade from DirecTV without losing all your previous hacks upon software upgrades.)
#3 is a forum to get the other necessary software patches to allow you to decrypt the DirecTV signal before it is stored onto the D Tivos harddrive. And a patch to allow downloads of the shows/movies from the D Tivo. (Superpatch-67all-nutkase, and superpatch-62a, Tytool 10R4, and others)

#5 a GREAT display of instruction with pics on how to remove the hard drive form the Tivo unit and install all the hacks)

Unfortunately, all I own are a PC laptop and a PC desktop. If you know of a way to make iMovie compatible or of a program that makes it similar based on the above criteria, please help me out!

First off, I currently have a sony vaio, they are horrible, they last long but after a while, their fans always go bad and become noisy and break, causing overheating.

I also have a 2011 MacBook Pro 1200$ model. It has all the RAM I need plus a good enough size hard drive. But I keep everything on an external hard drive anyway to save space and have everything backed up. It runs smoothly, longggg lasting battery etc. Just don't buy the white regular MacBook, that won't work for what you need it for.

Contrary to what the person above me said, you don't need a solid stated drive. You'll be fine with a 5400-7400 rpm hard drive. SSDs are really expensive. You say you are a student and I know you have a tight budget but if you use Apple's student discount, they take money off their laptops. So you'll be able to get one for 1100$.

But if you get a sony at a good price, fine, mine has lasted 6 years but 3 of those have been a with a loud fan, so get an extended warranty if you can. My next suggestion would be the HP's. Other than that there isn't any other manufacturer I would recommend for Design and video editing. If you're going to use Premeire Pro, try the older Final Cut Pros first, they're a lot cheaper even with the Adobe Education discount.

My band is getting serious about recording, and instead of going to a studio we'd like to do it ourselves.

My one friend's band.. they do everything from his MacBook and it all sounds like they produce recordings that are studio-quality.

I'm also an extreme gamer.. MMORPG / FPS's.. which is the downfall of me investing in a MacBook.. as City of Heroes/Villians I don't believe is mac-compatible; nor are many other games. :P

So any suggestions on laptop specifications i should look for, for cutting-edge recordings, video editing, and gaming?

I have been working a dead retail job since I graduated 4 years ago. After school and I received my degree I was overwhelmed with low self esteem and an unwavering fear of failure. I am highly introverted. I know Photoshop and HTML and CSS but that's it. Every few months or so I get up the courage to search jobs in my field but they require skills I never acquired. Some employers want people who can code Java and languages I've never heard of. I didn't attend college for computer programming. Some want video editing skills and experience with after effects. I don't know that. Some want Flash skills and the ability to code action script. They didn't dive into action script aside from one introductory lesson. I only used Flash during that one class in college, same goes for InDesign and Illustrator. Some companies want knowledge of animation software. Never did animation outside of Flash. I really need to get going on my design career ASAP because my current retail job pays minimum wage (under 10 bucks) and dropped a lot of us down to 9-15 hours a week! Where are all the entry level design jobs with job training? Most internships don't pay and are for students only and last 3 months. I'm 35 and need to pay off my debts! What do I do to get a design job fast?

VLC Media Player: Amazing. It does everything and is super customizable. One example is that you can change how the video and audio sync up in case one is behind the other.

Audacity: Audio editing software. Also amazing.

1Password: Secure place to store passwords and personal info under one password. Only the PC beta is free. I just got it. Pretty cool.

7-Zip: The best software I've found for dealing with .zip files. Very simple and you can access it just by right clicking on the file you need.

Skype of course. Video chat.

If you're into programming or making websites or anything, Notepad++ is pretty awesome for editing any language. Especially HTML and CSS though.

I'm using jGRASP for Java editing. It's good too.

4t Tray Minimizer: Just by right-clicking on the minimize button of almost any window, I can minimize it to the system tray instead of the taskbar. That way, (1) windows you don't want cluttering things up won't be in your way, and (2) anybody who doesn't know to look there won't see it.

If you want something to use instead of Microsoft Office, look at OpenOffice. It's probably better than Microsoft Office, but it's just different enough that lots of people are uncomfortable with it. Not as slick as Microsoft, but then it's a few hundred bucks cheaper. As in free... :)

Photobucket is a great web based and FREE editing tools. The software behind it comes from Adobe who make some of the best commercial ($$$) photo and video editors. If you need/want more features downloading VideoSpin or VideoThang are great options. Still free, but you have to download the software. For under $100 you can buy Adobe Premiere Elements.

Let be better state the question, i screwed up. I have a mini sony disc that I took out of my camcorder. Is there anyway I can get the video files off of the disc, burn them to another and upload them to my Itunes. Well you can get softwares from Circuit City, Best Buy and on net. There are different softwares used to do this job basically these are called video editing softwares, some people even do it by using Nero 7.0 but its features are not too good and it is little complicated but still it does the job. People usually have this software to burn CDs you can see if you can get it, it is also avilable on net for trial version.

mpeg4 or wmv
30 FPS
mp3 sound
640 by 480 resolution


--For best editing....

use windows movie maker (included in your windows machine)... it can help you make beautiful slideshow or video clip(e.g. mixing your songs with pictures/video/lyric/etc).... then save it as video file such as wmv file format... finally upload.

or .. Just get those clips you want , save & convert them, and then mix/match with pix/sound/etc using windows movie maker to create new masterpieces....

this will help you.... Use 'zillatube'. This is the easiest (and also the fastest) way.

Zillatube produces mpg/mp3 formats from youtube that are compatible with windows movie maker(or media player), and more.

It is very easy to download and convert videos. Then edit those converted mp3/mpg videos with windows movie maker... save your file as wmv and then upload.
