What is a good program to edit mpeg and AvI files?

Q. I have some mpeg and would like to join them as 'one' file and also remove some scenes from some.
whats a good program for that??

Answer
http://www.avid.com/freedv = "Avid Free DV software is an easy, free way to join the Avid family and test-drive the industry-standard editing interface used by more professionals than any other video editing solution."
Movies that have an extension of .AVI. = edit them with Windows Movie Maker 2. That program is a part of Windows XP. It has adjustments for brightness, hue and other features. To find it, click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>> Entertainment>>Windows Movie Maker. If for some reason Movie Maker is not on your PC, download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

What video editing software is available for Mac besides Final cut pro?

Q. Ive had Final cut pro x for a while now and its given me black and green flickering on ever video i import without fail even though those mov files imported are in perfect condition and without flickering or flashing. Ive tried workarounds unsuccessfully and have found out that its just an issue final cut pro has with third party files (i record and convert using third party software) I need a good alternative similar to sony vegas pro or final cut that wont give me this issue but works on my macbook. Thanks!
Ive tried to use imovie and that fixes the flashing but imovie does NOT let me export. it loads up for sometimes hours exporting and when it is finished it is as if i never exported anything. no file created, no nothing. And im using an hdpvr 2 capture card with the software hdpvr capture for mac found here- http://www.hdpvrcapture.com/wordpress/

Answer
Have you MASTERED iMovie,yet???

And, if so, do you have similar problems with 3rd-party MOV clips, as opposed to MOV clips you created yourself?

TIP: I'm trying to get you to tell us the specific details that you omitted, like "where and how" you ACQUIRED the 3rd-party clips, for example. You do know that OS X won't let you use Copy-righted MOV clips, due to D.R.M. Legislation.

15 inch 2011 Macbook pro or 2010 for video editing?

icefireboy

I am going to be doing the 12 month payment thing for either one but still i want it to be as low as possible. I will be editing a lot hd videos on final cut express 4 which i will buy with the computer. I think i will be getting 8gb of ram i heard its good for video editing. Now i wont be gaming so none of those answers. And should i just go with the cheaper 2010 15 inch or go with the 2011? Also with the refurbished ones how. Can i add the option to add the $200 for 8gb ram.

Answer
For video? You need as many processor cores as you can spare cash for.

The new 15" and 17" MacBook Pro's have quad cores (hyperthreading doubles to 8 cores) and 64 bit processors, the 2010 have dual cores and 32 bit processors..

The 64bit allows you to have 8GB of RAM, the 32bit only uses 3.6GB, so you want the new 2011 models for sure unless you plan to ditch the computer in a year or two anyway.

You also need dedicated graphics, even if you don't 3D game, for video as the inferior integrated graphics makes the CPU overheat, which restricts performance as it self-hobbles to keep the heat down.

Video needs a lot of performance, a desktop MacPro would be ideal as a video platform for the absolute best performance (twice as much as a top of the line MacBook Pro), but you lack portability.

If you go cheap and 32 bit 2010 refurbished, your going to be making a huge mistake as dual cores are on their way out due to their 3.6GB RAM limits. I have 7 year old 15" Intel Core 2 dual, not a bad machine still, but not so much for video.

Quad core 64 bit is the future for the next 10 years and their laptops just came out two weeks ago. :)

What is a good video editing software?

Q. i am looking into a new editing system primarily to edit DVDs on, now my laptop is a 2011 Toshiba C655-S5122 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM Intel Core i3 M 380 @ 2.53GHz. my budget is under $100, i need something powerful and that renders pretty fast, and i would like it to burn after rendering. i have tried multiple programs, currently using AVS VideoEditor witch is glitched and freezes up constantly.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
~MC

Answer
Well it's going to be hard to find a good one for under $100. I'm do professional video editing and they can get a little pricey.

I would recommend look a Corel video studio software. It works very good and there are different versions and also Sony Vegas.

Corel editing software if definitely my favorite on the lower end editing software.

Now if you want to go professional you could look into Adobe Premiere. There are some older versions out there on ebay and places like that where you can buy it used or cheap. Just make sure you are getting a software code and not just the installation disks. I learned to use Adobe Premiere CS5 version. CS6 is out now but you can the older version CS4 pretty cheap sometimes. I wouldn't go any lower then Adobe CS4.

Feel free to email me if you have any more questions you need help with
Hope this helps!

Free, open source video editing software?

Paul

Needs to be able to edit HD avi files

Thanks!

Answer
There are plenty videos, open source software on Linux ubuntu, but for windows OS you may find spyware infections attachment programs that will slow down your operating system. I would not try any of those for windows programs.

Video Editing Software?

Q. I just got a GoPro Hero 2. Now i need a editor. I am willing to pay up to $100, - im not looking for Adobe Premiere Pro, but a good editor that is better then windows movie maker. I have a PC Windows XP Pro and most of the free video editors aren't good enough. I will be doing timelapses, so the program must have at least 30 frames per second for making the time lapse. It also needs to do that smoothly, not jumpily. I will also be shooting film at 120 fps, so the slow-motion needs to also be smooth....very smooth. Some movies will be long like 30 min and some short like 5 minutes. Any suggestions help!
Thanks!

Answer
Here are two FREE ones but they are not windows operating systems or software They are Linux Operating systems and software which is stable, secure faster and far superior this is why the movie industry, Disney, Hollywood and Sony studios use Linux, It never crashes or freezes up.

Open source video editing software with lossless codec?

Q. I typically use open source Blender3D's VSE with an AVI wrapper, but the h.264 lossless option in it seems to render me a black screen. I finally get to share one of my little video's on a theater screen and I'd love to make it as sharp as possible, it's 1920x1080, but looks crap against any RED footage so would love to squeeze out any extra bits if I can. Prefer open source alternative, but if Premiere or Avid are the only options I'll bite the bullet and purchase. Thanks for your time. -Will

Answer
Hi, Will.
In my understanding, technically, the so-called "lossless" mode of H.264 is actually lossy. Truly lossless codecs, such as Lagarith, HuffYUV, Camtasia, CamStudio, CorePNG, and the like, while great for encoding and storing intermediates, would be too heavy for presentation playback (even on a fairly capable machine), not to mention the enormity of the file sizes.
To make sure I understood correctly: Your original footage, which is .r3d files shot on a RED camera, drops in quality after converting to h.264, correct? Exactly in what form does the "crappiness" manifest, macro-blocking, blurriness, change in contrast, etc?
Also, the availability of a codec is not dependent on the editing software, if it is installed on your system. If your exporter supports the AVI wrapper, youâll have the option to encode using any of the compatible codecs available on your system.
As for the software, I would strongly recommend Premiere Pro, but if itâs not within your budgetary grasp, thereâs also a free (closed-source) version of an industry-standard editor called LightWorks. You're on Windows, right?
I may be able to better help if you could respond with some clarification.

Good luck.

What is the best video format and codec?

Q. i always edit videos.. sometimes i edit HD..
i use mpg format usually, mpeg2, 720x480 or 1280x720 for HD, ntsc..
i am also a big fan of adobe premiere pro cs5.5, and adobe after effects.

My problem is..
ive noticed recently that my output video is not the quality that i want. its an 720p.
and rendered it with 1 pass.
and after that.. i began to search for a codec that is best for videos..

i have found out that many video guys use H.264(mp4) because it saves a lot more disk space and it is a standard for web video sites.

My question is..can an H.264 give me the best quality that i want?
if i switched to h264.. will it play to almost all machines(pc's, mac)? including the old one, (either standard or HD)? And is it already a standards for many pro video makers out there?
or is it better to stick to mpeg2 format because it is universal?

my output video is only intended for playback on computers/ uploading to sites.
i already understand the policies on burning to optical disk.

Answer
Carling (a.k.a. Linux Soapbox) has once again found a stat that no one believes but Carling. Hollywood uses Final Cut Pro in OS X 49%, with Avid Media Composer (only available for Windows 7 Pro x64 and Mac OS X) a distant second at 22%. Linux is nowhere in Hollywood editing.

In general, compressed video is at its best in H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) codec. You wouldn't want "the best quality". That would be uncompressed 1080i and 1080p HDTV RGB 10 bit @ 1920 x 1080 @ 60i = 237 MB per/sec, or 834 GB per/hr. It just isn't practical for a home computer system, so use the most efficient compressed codec: H.264. If it doesn't look good, maybe the original had some limitations. Don't think that all commercial DVD movies are created equally. Some are just creaky old AVI files authored to DVD. If your source is a camcorder, those range widely in quality also.

That's the summary. Here are the full details....

First off, H.264 is not the same as MP4.

Most video files are actually "containers". The type of container is indicated by the file extension (the three characters after the dot in the file name). This is similar to a folder, except that the contents are not intended to be used separately, so the container cannot be easily opened for inspection of the contents. Within a given container type may be any of several video file formats, along with one or more audio files, and even one or more subtitles files. Each container type has its own ability to use the different video formats. The software that makes the container (from a DV tape, or by converting from another container) controls what type of video format can be put within the container. A few examples of containers are FLV, AVI, MOV, WMV, MP4, and MKV.

MP4 is the container associated with MPEG-4 Part 14 video encoding. It can be used to store video, subtitles, and still images. Like most modern containers, MPEG-4 Part 14 allows streaming over the Internet. A separate hint track is used to include streaming information in the file. For some specialized uses, the file extension is changed to reflect the type of encoding of the material in the container, such as .m4a, .m4b, and .m4r.

H.264/MPEG-4 Part 10 or H.264/MPEG-4 AVC (Advanced Video Coding) is an encoding standard for video compression. It was developed to give video quality equal to MP4 but at half the bit rate, thus providing a smaller file size. It is one of the three encodings used with BlueRay Disc. It is also used for many newer high quality videos online, such as on Youtube and the iTunes Store. The final drafting work on the first version of the standard was completed in May 2003. Since it is only 9 years old, this standard is too new for Windows XP compatible players. Windows Media Player 12 (The first real effort from Microsoft to use non-Windows video) adds support for H.264, and requires Windows Vista or 7.

AVI is an outdated container for video that was not great back in 1992 when it was developed by Microsoft. AVI has no support for b-frames. That means it has limited compression ability. In particular, H.264/AVC codec does not work well with AVI, and H.264/AVC is the new trend for the forseeable future in video encoding. AVI also has no support for attachments, such as additional fonts in subtitles. Since modern formats have none of the limitations and all of the advantages of AVI, we should wean ourselves (this mostly applies to Windows XP users) off AVI ASAP.

The main reason PC geeks hang onto AVI is that 40% of them still use Windows XP, a 10 year out of date system, that is hard-pressed to support modern video. Blame Microsoft for putting a stumbling block in their path to upgrade when Vista bombed. They are just now getting over that awful shock and beginning to make Windows 7 more popular than XP.

Good laptop, under $500...?

Q. So my wife and I are looking to get new laptops (her's might be a necessity) soon. And since, like many of you I'm sure, $$ is a factor. I get TigerDirect emails all the time for laptops starting @ like $349 or something.

But , I want a laptop that will be good for video editing and be on the smaller end that still has the high resolution (so i can fit more on screen at one time)

What is out there for under $500, if they are out there, and where are they? Thanks!

Answer
a decent laptop at 500 is a stolen laptop. Then again I'm really picky when it comes to a laptop or any computer in general.

Best Laptop HP for under 500 bucks and under?

Q. I was wondering what HP laptop under 500 dollars would be best for games like ROBLOX or video editing.

Answer
If you will game on the laptop then try to find one that has VIDEO card which is not shared memory with RAM.

If it says Intel GMA HD Graphics, most likely it shared RAM, which means video will suck and wont be able to handle most games. If you are looking for a brand new laptop which can handle higher end games like World of War Craft 3 then I dont think $500 is enough.

When you see that a laptop has something like NVIDIA GeForce GT 740M, then that most likely well be able to handle a game.

You have to make sure the laptop can handle DirectX 11 because all newer games use DirectX11

IN CONCLUSION
Find a laptop you can afford, read the specifications, go visit the website for the video card and see if it can handle the game your trying to play.

I provided a link below for an HP laptop $539.94 it should work. Also provided link for graphic card in it.

FOLLOW UP - You plan to play ROBLOX it only needs DirectX 9 Here is what I found out:
Graphics Card: ROBLOX requires DirectX 9 minimum and Shader Model 2.0.
For the best performance we recommend either a computer less than 5 years old with a dedicated video card, or a laptop less than 3 years old with an integrated video card.

RAM or Memory: ROBLOX recommends you have at least 1 GB of memory on Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 computers. At least 512 Mb of memory is recommended for Windows XP.

Storage Space: ROBLOX recommends you have at least 20 Mb of system storage space to install ROBLOX.

Here is a link for an HP laptop that will support this game.
http://www.staples.ca/en/HP-8440P-HP8440I552004-Laptop-14-inch-24GHz-Intel-Core-i5-520M-250GB/product_285307_2-CA_1_20001

BUT if you plan to purchase a better game this laptop will have a hard time running it probably.

Buying a laptop for 3D rendering and video/photo editing?

Q. Hello, I'm planning on buying a laptop for using Blender 3D and other editing program like sony vegas, photoshop etc.

So would this spec handle this?

3rd Generation Intel® Ivy Bridge Core⢠i7-3610QM (2.3GHz - 3.3GHz, 6MB Intel® Smart Cache, 45W Max TDP)

nVidia GT 630M 1024MB PCI-Express GDDR3 DX11 with Optimus

8GB - DDR3 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)

500gb 7200rpm (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)

I'm planning on buying my laptop from this website

http://www.xoticpc.com/

Answer
To the best of my knowledge that spec laptop would cope very well :) but no matter how good the laptop is, rendering will always take a very long time. I personally use a desktop with an Intel Core2Quad Q8300, ATI Radeon HD5670, 4GB DDR3 (1333mHz) RAM and a 320GB and 2TB SATA2 7200RPM hard drives, and i can edit and render reasonably well.

Laptop for video editing?

What laptop should i get that will make rendering video a breeze and will have unlimited speed. i am currently looking at these specs

2.5-3.0 GHZ procesor

Best kind of laptop for these functions!?

Venannai

I recently figured out that the laptop that I currently have won't allow me to do the things that I want to do, therefore, I figured it's time for a new computer! I want a laptop that would enable me to do video and photo editing, gaming, as well as smoothly perform the basic functions of web surfing and run Microsoft Office. I figured that a gaming laptop would be the best option, but understand that these are expensive. I was wondering if a gaming laptop would be the best route. If not or if so, any suggestions would be helpful.

Just 2 restrictions though: no Apple products and preferably nothing above $1500
@Ultima vyse: definitely more casual games

Answer
The MSI G Series GT60 2OD-026US should do great for you. For especially video and photo editing, the more RAM a computer has is the better. You will also need a good graphics card as well as processor. The MSI G Series GT60 2OD-026US laptop would be perfect for you and your editing as it has a lot of memory, a great processor, fast and big hard drive and superb graphics. This machine has 16 GB RAM (most laptops have up to 8 GB).It also has the Intel i7-4700MQ processor which is one of the best processor around at this moment. This laptop also has a NVIDIA Geforce GTX780M graphics card which is brilliant plus a 1000 GB Hard drive assisted by a 128 GB Solid-State Drive which is super fast and will help in the overall speed of the laptop. Go ahead and get this laptop- it is very suitable for your task as well as playing most if not all of todays games (even top graphics ones).

What are some Free Video Editing Softwares for a windows PC?

Q. I've been using Videopad Video Editor, and it makes my videos look horrible! my videos come out choppy, and laggy.

any suggestions out there?

if it helps, I have a Canon ELPH HS 110 camera that shoots in 1080p hd.
thanks!

Answer
That depends what you want to do with your videos.

1) I use FreeMake for basic clipping and encoding because it's fast and supports batch processing of many video files at once. It can also merge clips into one file, and supports a myriad of out put formats. It's really more of a conversion tool, that an editor. But that's about it. It can't do too much else.

2) There is always Windows Live Movie Maker - free. Which allot of basics pretty well, but is very slow in encoding and has limited outputs. Basic good and free, but slow.

There are very few free editors worth their salt out there. Most can only do the very basic, basics. I got Cyberlink's PowerDirector free when I purchased a new laptop. The latest edition is available on a month long trial and is pretty comprehensive, from capturing through to editing video and sound together or separately. It also does a decent job at authoring DVD's and blue rays. All for around $70 to $80 last time I checked.

Answer
Without a doubt, upgrade your RAM: 16GB for preference, 8GB if that is all you can afford

In terms of your GFX card - a GPU is useful when you want to render, but has limited use on simple playback functionality, so I would wait before upgrading that. A video card is a better way to go, but not really worth it if you are only editing video that is destined for the web.

You want to store your operating system and your editing software on a separate drive, so if you don't have one already, get a separate physical drive onto which you store all your video media. Seriously - keeping your application and OS on the same drive as your media is looking for trouble. If this drive has to be an external, look at a Firewire connection as a minimum, if not USB 3. Tops would be Thunderbolt, but I doubt that your laptop has that.

I hope this helps.

Best Laptop for Video Editing?

Q. So I have been saving up money for a new laptop for awhile now and am looking to invest it in the best possible laptop for primarily video editing. Currently my laptop has plenty of memory and ram but the processor is only at 1.5 GHz and is an HP Laptop. I think that there's intel processor's with a 3.6 Ghz and wondering if I should try for something like that? Or if there is a specific laptop or even just a laptop that has the compatibility to upgrade to a higher processor like that it would be great.

The use would involve heavy RAW filed photo and video editing along with special effects design and music editing.
Thank you.

Answer
You need something with a good processor, and a ***tload of RAM.

Look for:
i7-3610QM, i7-3630QM, i7-3840QM
16GB+ RAM
Graphics card doesn't matter.
256GB+ Solid State Drive

You didn't list your budget, but this build could easily cost upwards of $1500 or more.

I rarely say this on YAnswers, but a desktop is a more practical solution for heavy video editing if you want it done fast.
Disregard that if you really want a laptop.

Answer
how long is your computer taking to render a 2 hour dvd, it should take 4 to 6 hours or rather 4 to 6 hours can be considered normal
for a avi or mpeg 2 to vob dvd

a off the shelf dell with 2 gig of ram is low priced basic computer that is great for email and word processing. Using Dell as a example, could you edit a video on one? Yes, standard def video can be editing on a dell but the rendering time will be long. When you finish your masterpiece, you have to hit a button labeled render or make video. It will take a 2 hour DVD 3 to 5 hours to "render" and 10 to 15 min to burn depending on how many transition and effects you used, how "complex" your video is.
Dell as one example shares its on board memory with its basic video card, the video card is not advanced enough to take some of the workload of video off the core cpu.
Thats ok, set it up to render overnight but make sure your anti virus program does not auto-launch at 11 P.M or when ever your computer is rendering as it will overload the cpu and probably crash.
As you edit the preview screen will stutter at times and you may have to wait for the computer to catch up with you. Some plug in transitions like "prodad" will not function on a basic computer or on a video card with 8meg of ram.

Laptops and video, Mine is 2 years old and I can edit on it (standard def) with no problem but here is the trick with a laptop. Have an external drive! and capture your video to that drive. A laptop harddrive is only 5400rpm, even sata2, and is stressed by the workload. Having a external USB 7200rpm drive splits the workload across two drives. It makes all the difference in the world. Also recommended for your desktop computer for video or audio apps. (mixing of 24 tracks).
External USB drives with 200 meg are very cost effective right now.

Having said all that it is better too use a powerhouse computer or a workstation class computer. I custom build a quadcore for this purpose. With a nvideo GTs8800, 512 mem on board video card. It is designed to take the video workload compression off of the computer cpu. It is designed to render video and does it well. A project that would take some computers 2 hours to render I can now do in 18 min. How often are you going to do video editing determines your need of hardware. You could even get a breakout box that makes your video render free. (dv mojo but it does not support hi def as I understand it)
Powerhouse computers will not crash (as often) as they hum along cheerfully piecing your Hollywood production together.

You can buy a 10,000 rpm drive from seagate if you do not mind sitting next to a jet engine, Its alittle loud but is the fastest in its class without stepping up to a raid hard drive sys.

If you are advanced with computers and want to configure a raid sys do not use windows raid ulity to configure the raid, it is software driven with resource overhead that takes away some of the speed advantage. You need a raid controller card that has hardware control of the drives to archive mind blowing speeds

Video Editing software for Windows?

mitra pakz

i want to purchase a Windows Laptop which can support the video editing software... want to know the exact configuration and which would be the best Windows XP Laptop to support the same along with other softwares for animation

Answer
Video Editing softwares are supported by any standard configuration.
What u need is better graphics capability, i think AMD works better in graphic works, also put a good graphics card(use Radeon, that's better though many prefer GeForce)
So u take up a Dual Core Athlon Processor, Radeon Graphics Card (http://ati.amd.com/products/radeon9800/radeon9800pro/index.html), 1 GB Ram(if possible stuff more), AZUZ motherboard, TFT LCD Screen 17"(Any LG or ViewSonic is good), Sony DVD Writer, Creative 7.1 Speakers.
Also take care to check out the Coolong systems, AMD get;s hot very fast.
I'm telling the configuration b'cos u do for Animation, and video editing, otherwise Intel and Pentium is best.

Free video editing software?

Q. Could you please recommend me some video editing software similar to Video Pinnacle Spin, preferably free one? I need to complete one simple task: add a slide at the end of the existing video with some text. Nothing complex.

Any recoomendations are highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Answer
How about three very good freeware video editor programs, Freemake, FileLab, or VSDC? Each is safe, fully functioning, no watermarks, will not ask for money, and are recent releases that are HD capable.

They are listed in order of increasing capabilities. Freemake provides merging of video clips, and simple editing such as cutting and splicing. It will also automatically upload your video to YouTube if desired. It is also capable of converting your video to just about any video format in existence. FileLab has much more features, such as color correction, title editor, and special effects. VSDC is an advanced editor, capable of effects such as green screen editing. The following link has more info, but make sure to also view other articles on this site, as they outline other capabilities of these three programs.:

Bear in mind these would be exactly how I've presented them, no customization on the Alienware and VERY minimal, if any (can't go above $1200) on the Studio. It would be used for college and gaming.

Answer
The first one. Better processor, and a 2 year warranty. Larger HDD. And I'm guessing the video card in the first one is better, too. The only thing the second one has going for it is the Alienware "cool" factor, and slightly better screen resolution.

EDIT: Oops. The video card in the Alienware is better. My bad. But not that insanely much better.

Video editing software?

Satan

I am starting to record some videos and put them together to make some cool video clips. Can anyone suggest ANY FREE software that can do anything with my videos?
Thanks.

Answer
Photobucket is a great web based and FREE editing tools. The software behind it comes from Adobe who make some of the best commercial ($$$) photo and video editors. If you need/want more features downloading VideoSpin or VideoThang are great options. Still free, but you have to download the software. For under $100 you can buy Adobe Premiere Elements.

Video Editing software to make youtube videos?

TedRoy

I'd like to start making Youtube videos, I don't have a camera so the majority of the videos I have in mind will be using existing video files and cutting them up, just to get a feel for editing before I go out and buy a camera.

I'm looking for a reasonably simple to use FREE video editor, any open source ones around that are easy to use? I've found a few but they're a bit too hardcore for me.

--- This will help you....

use windows movie maker (included in your windows machine)... it can help you make beautiful slideshow or video clip(e.g. mixing your songs with pictures/video/lyric/etc).... then save it as video file such as wmv file format... finally upload.

or .. Just get those clips you want , save & convert them, and then mix/match with pix/sound/etc using windows movie maker to create new masterpieces....

this will help you.... Use 'zillatube'. This is the easiest (and also the fastest) way.

Zillatube produces mpg/mp3 formats from youtube that are compatible with windows movie maker(or media player), and more.

It is very easy to download and convert videos. Then edit those converted mp3/mpg videos with windows movie maker... save your file as wmv and then upload.

It works very well....just google search for "zillatube"

Would this configuration (read details) be good enough for Full HD Video editing?

Q. Hi,

I've just ordered a Dell XPS Laptop with the following configuration:

Second generation Core i7 2630 QM processor 2 Ghz with turbo boost 2.0 upto 2.90 Ghz
FHD Monitor
8 GB Dual Channel DD3 RAM
2 GB NVIDIA GT 540M graphics

and i think the i7 processor on this has 6MB of cache.

not that i bought this specifically for editing, i know that laptops are generally not suited for high end video editing work, but was just curious as to would this configuration be good enough for Full HD video editing? if so, to what extent?

I have a DSLR camera that shoots Full HD video, i was wondering if i'll be able to edit the footages shot from my dslr using this laptop configuration? i'll probably be using adobe premiere for editing.

thanks for your answers. I appreciate it.

regards,
Deepak.

Answer
I'll cautiously say that you should be fine. Meaty processor, good amount of RAM, powerful discrete video card. Those are key components. I'd say Premiere should work fine, as should most other programs. Avid Media Composer might even play nicely with that, but I'd check against the supported configurations. Anyway, I think I like that build. If that NVIDIA card is CUDA-capable, and I guess it probably is, that could be very useful for video processing. Look up some NVIDIA information about how to turn it on and use it.

As for the DSLR, that's almost certainly H.264 video, so I'd still probably convert it to something else before I edit, something less compressed like DVCProHD, or AVC-Intra, or something like Avid DNxHD. The reason is that even powerful computers work so hard to deal with H.264, that the playback stutters and it's not a pleasant experience. That's true for virtually every computer, even high-powered machines. When I work in Final Cut Pro, I convert H.264 to ProRes immediately. Same goes for Avid, but to DNxHD.

Also check to see that your computer is expandable somehow. Does it have a FireWire port, or at least some kind of expansion card slot? I don't think the XPS series has "Thunderbolt" yet, but I could be wrong. That's a nice kind of connection to have as well, as it can carry a bunch of different types of connections at the same time.

Beyond that, I'd say you're in pretty good shape, unless someone else has any red flags to raise.
