Windows 7, Windows 8, or Ubuntu 12.10?

Chris

I am using a desktop pc.
I primarily use it for gaming, video editing, and web-surfing.
I also use a lot of software, so all of it must be compatible.
What OS is the best for me?
I only need one OS...

Answer
Windows 7.

Ubuntu 12.10 (IMO) is a step-back from the previous 12.04 release.

Windows 8 is an unholy mess.

What are some good programs to install on a laptop with Ubuntu Linux ?

Answer
VLC is the cross-platform Swiss Army knife of media players. It's lightweight, open source, and can play virtually any fileâaudio or videoâthat you throw at it. If you're really into VLC, you can even use it rip DVDs, fix out-of-sync audio and video, and play your ripped DVDs. VLC has no media library tools, but you can create and save playlists. Either way, the slim, no-nonsense player has found a home on countless Windows, Mac, and Linux installs.

Stellarium is a free and open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. It boasts of a star catalogue with over 600,000 stars.

GnuCash provides accounting functions suitable for use by small businesses and individuals. It can track finances in multiple accounts, keeping running and reconciled balances. There is support for customer, vendor and employee processing.

Blender is one of the most popular open source applications ever. Blender is basically a free and open-source 3D modelling and rendering application which is also cross platform. Short films and animations created using Blender has been an instant hit across the web.

As you should know, Ubuntu Software Center completely replaced Synaptic during the last release cycle. But even with all its improvements, Ubuntu Software Center is not anywhere near as slick or functional as Synaptic yet. So you might want to install and use Synaptic until Software Center is more 'complete'. Expected changes for upcoming Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin release include many improvements and feature additions for Ubuntu Software Center, so that we can expect a more solid release next time around.

Shutter is perhaps the most comprehensive tool for easy capturing, editing and sharing of screenshots. Really must have app for bloggers, have been using Shutter like forever.

Mumble is a voice over IP application primarily designed for use by gamers, similar to programs such as TeamSpeak and Ventrilo. Many reviewers have rated Mumble above both TeamSpeak and Ventrilo apparently. Mumble features noise suppression, automatic gain control and low latency audio with support for multiple audio standards.

Uget is a simple, lightweight and easy-to-use download manager. It is fast, responsive and does what it is supposed to do rather well.

GIMP needs no introduction. It is simply the best image editor application for Linux. Until a few releases back, GIMP was among the default choice of applications for vanilla Ubuntu. It has now been replaced with more light weight applications.

RawTherapee is used to adjust some of the most often changed parameters when optimizing digital images. It was one of the first raw converters available for Linux with a reasonably usable GUI. A good application to try out for hardcore photographers.

Darktable is a good alternative to Adobe's Lightroom application. It enables you to develop raw images and enhance them. All editing with Darktable is fully non-destructive and only operates on cached image buffers for display. The full image is only converted during export.

Inkscape is a free and open source, cross platform, vector graphics editor with capabilities similar to Illustrator and CorelDraw, using SVG file format.

OpenShot Video Editor is a free and open-source non-linear video editor. It can create and edit videos and movies using many popular video, audio, and image formats. Though user reviews have generally been positive, many hard core users still prefer KDenLive.

Calibre manages your e-book collection for you. Calibre is a free and open source tool as well. It even supports e-book syncing with a variety of popular e-book readers out there.

Best PC laptop for video editing?

Music Is M

Hi!

I'm a film student looking to buy a new laptop this week, but I don't want to spend more than $1,200. I want the best possible quality I can get! I know macs are the big thing but on my budget I feel like I can get a faster/better computer in that price range by getting a PC. Also I edit with Avid Media Composer and Adobe premier/suite so if you know a laptop that handles those well... let me know!

Suggestions??

Also are computers that are good for gaming also good for video editing? I was checking out graphics cards and gaming computers seem to have the best ones!

Any opinions on this Toshiba?
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cdetland.to?poid=2000044488

Btw... I'm pretty skeptical about hp laptops because my last two broke and they always overheat!
To clarify, I am not looking for a gaming computer or a mac! Just a computer that will run fast and support intense video editing!

Answer
The Toshiba Qosmio X870 you're looking at isn't a good choice. The problem with that laptop is that it comes with a 17.3" 1600x900 display (as opposed to a 17.3" 1920x1080 display). 1600x900 resolution in a 17.3" display makes things onscreen large, and 17.3" displays that have 1600x900 resolution tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. You should make a point to avoid displays like this (15.6" 1366x768, 17.3" 1600x900, etc.) when it is reasonable to do so, unless you require the larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

This is more of an issue than a lot of other things. For example, an i5-3210M (as opposed to maybe an i7-3630QM) is not a terrible processor, a GTX 660M (as opposed to maybe a GTX 670M) is not a terrible GPU, but a 17.3" 1600x900 display is a terrible display. You need to be concerned with improving a display that's pretty bad before you start focusing on other aspects that are already pretty good in a lot of models.

Also note that things like the 12GB RAM, 3GB video memory, etc. are there purely for marketing purposes. They don't improve your gaming experience. You are not going to notice a difference in gaming by having more than ~8GB, and if you end up needing more in other programs than keep in mind that it's very cheap and easy to add more memory in after-market if you get a computer that has less memory than you need. As for the video memory: A 1.5GB GTX 670M is just as good as the 3GB version. The video memory is not the bottleneck, the GPU chip itself is. You'll see essentially the same performance on a 1.5GB version as you'll see on a version with unlimited memory.

Answer
I'm not up on the specs required by the latest Adobe software, but the problem that jumps out to me is the hard drive: It's a 5400rpm unit, you would really want a seperate faster hard drive to act as the video scratch.

The Hard drive in the laptop has to run the system and programmes, if you then add in video data then it's not going to be stable with all those MBs getting chucked around.

You need to get a seperate 7200rpm drive. Lacie do rugged drives with this rotation speed, if you have a firewire port they are also bus powered.

I don't see any reference to the bus speed either, you want 768 or preferably faster. This dictates how quickly the various components can communicate. No point having a fast processor and a fast external drive if the system bus speed is strangling it.

These are why desktops are generally the better option for video editing. Unless you use a mac. Which I do.

Video Editing Software?

La Flaca

I have a few video clips that I would like to edit. I need to zoom in on the video. ** this is the most important thing I need to do

I also would like to split and join video clips together, making one longer video.

Possible transition effects but I want to have the audio from the video removed and other music put to the clip.

Any suggestions or helpful software to do this? I am a novice at video editing, so something user friendly pleaseâ¥

Thanks

Answer
Adobe Premier Elements 3.0 (currently $60 on Amazon after rebate). PC Magazine rates it very highly. Also, the video clerk at the local Best Buy rates it well. She's a film major and has made commercials, short films, etc. and highly recommended it to me. I already use the older version (1.0) and plan on upgrading to 3.0 very soon.

What is a good video editing software for time lapse?

ST

okay i was thinking that instead of getting a hella expensive Camtasia 7 for screen recording i got bsr.
problem is most of the free screen recorders i get wont record at an extreamly fast time lapse. Im talking about turning a 1,2,3 hours of recording into a video of 10-15 minutes or less. I do drawing videos using photoshop and they take time. Hypercam 2 won't help because of the 16 bit 32 bit problem. I guess my computer's to advanced for it. So it doesn't work. In short I just want a video editing software that can speed run a video. I have a Windows 7 starter laptop. If the software's not free that's okay. It needs to be payable from Amazon and less than 20 bucks if possible. Okay I've already found one. How about this...can you tell me if Corel Studio pro 3x is good for my time lapse problem. If not say another that fit the requirements. I apologize if I'm being to needy or picky, but I'm kinda on a budget now.....

Answer
You could also use My Screen Recorder Pro to capture the video in time lapse instead of trying to edit it for time lapse after the capture. http://www.deskshare.com/video-screen-capture.aspx

Video Camera focus help please?

Lily

Okay, so I really want to enter a YouTube contest, but the entry has to be in video form. My problem is that my digital camera has horrible focus. I have the Canon PowerShot SD1300 IS Digital ELPH. It had fine focus when I take pictures, but when it comes to video, it's just bad. I need help because other people have said they have canon cameras that focus great. Also, the quality sometimes gets twice as bad when I upload to YouTube. :/ Any way to fix that too? Thank you so much! :)

Answer
Hi Lily:

I know that you asked this Question last week, but the one Answer didn't really cover what you wanted, so I'm glad you re-posted.

One of the problems people have with "point and shoot" cameras, is that they get kinda lazy (since they seem "easy" to use) and don't read the instructions... which sometimes aren't even printed, but located as a PDF on the CD-ROM in the box.

Blurry video can be due not only to lens-focus but also camera shake. Your camera has Image Stabilization (that's the "I.S." in the model name!) which can make a big difference in clarity of the final recorded image, both for video and stills.

And the biggest focus issues point-and-shoot owners have with shooting video is forgetting that half-pressing the shutter (even after starting the video recording) will "tell" the camera to re-focus. And if you have gotten into the habit of just quickly pressing the shutter all the way down to start a video recording, the camera will not have time to correctly pre-focus on your subject (there are motors and sensors that take time to "home in" on the intended subject).

Get in the habit of half-pressing the shutter at the beginning of each video sequence. You'll notice the image slightly blur & re-focus as your camera's sensors properly lock-in on what you really want focused. THEN you can press the shutter down the rest of the way and start the video recording. (This is a good habit for still photos, also.)

I'll put the full Canon PDF manual link in my Sources below, but at least take the time to read a good (and shorter!) article describing your Auto-Focus (AF) & Image Stabilization features, like this one by CameraLabs.com: http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_PowerShot_SD1300_IS_IXUS_105/

The article's images & text will show the difference achieved with and without IS turned on, and describes the AF, focus zones/frames, spot focusing, and focus lock features.

Good photography and video takes practice, and if you take time to read up on the proper technique, your videos will look as good as other Canon users' examples.

Upload quality & YouTube settings are a whole different discussion, especially since we don't know what computer or Video Editing program you use. YouTube always re-encodes anything you upload, and this always loses some of the original quality. (I know you're just 13, so I won't get too technical here.)

The Canon ZoomBrowser EX software that came with your camera (or ImageBrowser/Camera Window for a Mac) has some basic file-transfer & YouTube uploading features. These might eliminate any unnecessary re-encoding (transcoding) of your footage, if you've been using other image browsing/converting or editing software.

After you master Focus and Image Stabilization, do a YouTube search (for tutorials) or a Yahoo!Search or Google with keywords "AVI Motion JPEG upload tips". [This is the video file type your camera produces.]

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Can the Ultra HD Flip cam and the Vado HD cam record up close?

SSG.Wentwo

I am concidering buying one of these two cameras. I do knife and gun reviews for youtube so I want it to be easy to use for that AND be able to record in good quality up close.. My question is if I take, lets say a knife, an hold it an inch from either the vado or the ultra HD camera lense while recording, how well will the picture be? Is it auto focus or does it have a "flower" option

Answer
Creative Labs Vado HD 8 GB Pocket Video Camcorder
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002JM1XWQ?tag=dcmb-20

REVIEW:
While other brands may catch more headlines the Vado HD is the small portable video cam for you. It combines portability, ease of use, quality with features that are not found on competing models. One thing that separates the Vado for the competition is its ability to record in standard definition, HD and HD+. Why is it important to be able to video quality options? Some medias do not need HD quality - when you upload videos to Facebook or YouTube HD videos take significantly longer to upload. However, there are times when it is great to record in HD... vacations... weddings... and so on.

Pros

- The ability to record using three levels of video quality.
- Great capacity! 2 hours of HD and 8 hours of standard definition
- Comes with a replaceable rechargeable battery
- Very large viewing screen, especially for the size of the camera
- Comes with a rubberized case
- Very simple to use - works great with both a Mac and a PC/Windows
- Smaller than a typical cell phone
- Comes with a HDMI port and cables - this allows you to plug the Vado HD directly into your HD television

Final verdict - A great camera that offers a significant amount of recording flexibility. The only real area for improvement is some sort of image stabilization capability , however to my knowledge, none of the cameras in this class offers this feature. My recommendation, buy with confidence!

Flip UltraHD Camcorder
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0023B14TK?tag=dcmb-20

REVIEW:
The Flip UltraHD Camcorder is the perfect supplement to larger consumer camcorders. It's a point-and-shoot camcorder. I carry mine in my pocket and am finding opportunities to spontaneously capture fun moments, like the one in my video here in this review (I was walking my dog at the time).

The only reason that it can't serve as my primary camcorder is that the zoom is extremely limited as you'll see in the video. And footage can get wobbly as there is no auto stabilization (you'll notice that, too, in this video).

This camcorder is designed for upfront and personal footage: parties, family gatherings, etc. I use mine to shoot video interviews for my blog, for example.

The quality of the videos is impressive: true HD! PC users will especially appreciate the intuitive and rather elegant "FlipShare" video editing software. I have a PC and a MacBook Pro. I prefer the FlipShare editor vs. Apple's iMovie because it's a lot easier to use.

Editing your video clips is a snap with FlipShare: there is no learning curve. You can then save your videos/movies onto your computer or share them with friends and family -- or the world via FlipShare "icons" that give you the following sharing options:

* E-mail
* "Greeting cards" (cute e-mail themes like Christmas cards or post cards)
* Upload them to myspace, YouTube or other similar sites
* Burn them to DVDs
* You can also capture high-resolution "snapshots" or photos from videos with one click of the "Snapshot" icon.

To create a move, click the "flip" button on the side of the camera to extend the USB arm and plug it into your computer. Then open the FlipShare software and select the clips you want to include. Next click the "Movie" icon. That begins an easy, self-guiding process to:

1) Add an opening title and closing credits (you don't have to, but it's an option. You can even add a cute "Recorded by Flip Video" animation at the very end, which I opted to do in my video here).

2) You can leave the default sound, or you can add music from the included library of seven songs (or upload a song (mp3 format) from your computer. You can then opt to play the music as soft (or loud) background music and still hear conversations, etc; or you can play only the music, removing the default audio altogether.

3) Name your movie -- then click "Create Movie" and the software does its magic. Done! It's that simple.

I love this little camcorder and recommend it.

How good is my laptop?

New

Windows 7 Ultimate
Asus G73Sw
Windows Rating of 5.9
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2630QM CPU @2.00GHz
16.0 GB (15.5 GB usable) RAM
64-bit operating system
Nvidia GeForce GTX 460M Cuda 1.5GB
2 hard drives,
1 - 596GB
2 - 698GB

Answer
In gaming, slightly better than NVIDIA GeForce GT 645M or GT 730M now available as long as i5-3210M or better. The CPU will have little help until at GT 650M level. The 16GB ram and i7 make for fast video editing, but gaming needs only 8GB total.
It's a pretty good laptop, and at new was top of the line, but computer technology moves fast in the last 5 years. Win 7 ultimate main use is the multilanguage support I think and in Desktops for huge ram in video edit.
Since Lenovo Y580 is up to GT 750M with a faster i7 on sale at $850, let's say $700 to $750 new value as being fair.
Look up your gaming here:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
It is pretty good, but getting outpaced by new systems.

What laptop should I buy?

actress_ba

I'm planning on buying a new laptop but I have no idea where to begin. I'll try to make this as detailed as possible so you can get a good idea of what I need.

I'm 15 years old so I'm hoping for something fairly easy to figure out and at the least not terribly ugly. I don't have a very specific budget but I for sure won't spend over $1000. It needs a decent amount of memory since I'm into video and picture editing. I'm not really a gamer. The most intense game I play is the sims (lol) so don't worry about that. I spend a lot of time surfing the web (on youtube & facebook & such). I am a student and will be using my computer to research and write papers. It needs to have a webcam. If it comes with windows 7 that is a huge plus.

I don't care what brand of computer it is but definitely NOT a macbook or a netbook. The more specific you are with what laptop I should get, the better. Links would be great too.

ALSO: if you don't have a recommendation of what laptop is right for me but you know of some great sites that sell laptops for low prices I will still greatly appreciate it!

Thank you!!!

Answer
Video editing appears to be your biggest system demand, but this has a wide range of recommended specs.

If you are shooting, downloading, editing, and exporting movies from a MiniDv camcorder, even a 720 X 480 model, you need the hard drive space, ram, and processor speed to deal with the large data transfer rated from the fireWire. Along with the space, you need drive speed and may want to consider spending a little more for a laptop with a dual RAID drive.

Even more important if you are using premium software such as Adobe's Premiere.

Both of those together put you closer to $2000 for your system (Top quad-core processor, a TB of storage, 4 gb RAM at least, and Windows 64 bit).

Using a mpeg, MP4, or other compressed format camcorder (and no desire to upgrade) and Windows Movie-Maker??? Things are a little easier and an off the shelf $500-$750 laptop should do just fine. A card reader may be helpful if your camera records to one.

Brands, any name brand. There are minor differences between them at any given price point. I've had good luck with HP, Dell, and have considered Ansus and even the iMac.

Need some information about green screen technology!?

Derek

First off, sorry for my lack of knowledge on the subject!

Anyway, I recently purchased an HD Sony Camcorder as well as a green screen and lighting kit. Now, I have some questions about how to use everything properly. I set everything up and have the camera on a tripod, but I need to know how exactly to use the green screen. Is there some sort of software I need to download? If so, is it free? Is it easy to use/learn to use? And also, does the shade of the green screen change what type of software I need to use?

Please, just tell me EVERYTHING you can about green screens/ green screen software/tech and how to use it all properly! Thanks in advance!

1. Video editing software doesn't really "green screen". It chroma keys. This means it removes any color you set it to remove. When you remove black, it's called compositing. (I don't know why:-)

2. The chroma key option has controls so that you can remove different hues of a color (dark to light). But you don't want your subject to display with a green glow around it so it's best to set up the lighting as well as you can (see below).

3. Set up the screen so there are no wrinkles or folds in it. OK, there might be a few little ones. After you make a couple of clips, you'll see what adjustments you might have to make in the screen.

4. It's important to set up the lighting so that shadows aren't thrown onto the green screen. This means that not only must the subject be lighted but that lights also have to be behind the subject to remove shadowing. Don't plan on doing this perfectly the first (or second or third) time.

5. Chroma keying can be really fun. Enjoy the mistakes you make because some of them will be hilarious. Be sure to make short clips at first for practice. You don't want to be learning how to chroma key with an hour-long clip.

6. Chroma keying really isn't that hard to do. You'll have to make a few little adjustments here and there but otherwise, everything should go smoothly and be fun.

I made this for a Movie Maker user who wanted to do green screening. I'm using the freeware version of Serif's MoviePlus.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nThBxO5c-9w

Here's a great video about green screening. They use $$$ equipment but the principles are still the same. Most of us don't have $5,000 worth of lights:-)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3PZO_lCBkw
It's actually fun to have your subject be green screened out. I once shot a friend against the beige wall of his house and when I chroma keyed the beige, he became the invisible man. Only his clothes and hair were visible as he move around:-)

MoviePlus X6 is currently on sale. The free version will chroma key (and key frame, crop, etc.) but it has limited effects and won't burn playable DVDs.

Here's the download for the free version:
http://www.serif.com/free-video-editing-software/

Here's the regular version (on sale for $27 instead of $80):
http://www.serif.com/movieplus/

MoviePlus is a good transition program if all you've used before is Movie Maker. It does a lot. Isn't as confusing and complicated as some of the larger programs. It's solid and works really well (isn't buggy). Produces a really good quality video. Has tutorials and other help. You can find video tuts on YouTube.

What are some cheap laptops for great for video editing?

Mark

Here is the thing. I want to create gaming videos for pc and console. I plan on recording games for the pc on another computer and having this one be the editor. I want the laptop to be able to run sony vegas edits ranging from 15 minutes to an hour and I want it able to capture gameplay along with 2 different streams of audio at the same time. I would prefer if it didn't cost more than $460 and obviously it needs to have at least 4 gigs of ram. Any other specs for the laptop don't matter. I will get an external hard drive separate so I can transfer videos easier and so when I capture it puts less stress on the device.

Answer
Your described use and "cheap laptop" won't work. Video editing makes heavy use of a graphics card, and any laptop with a dedicated graphics card won't be very cheap. Furthermore, if the computer's supposed to handle two streams of audio, perhaps run a game, and capture gameplay at the same time, we're talking some heavy multitasking. At least an i5, perhaps even more. And perhaps a dedicated (usb) sound card as well.

So... Cheap laptop? No. Not gonna happen.

You didn't say anything on size and weight, so...

Something like this, at least: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834216457

And probably more like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152368

Video Editing Laptop?

I use Sony Vegas Pro, Cinema 4D, & Adobe After Effects, but my laptop(Sony Vaio) lags & is really slow when I'm editing. What are the fastest laptops for video editing? Ones that won't lag AT ALL. List some for me? I don't want a Macbook, so don't list that, thanks.

Answer
The fastest laptop for video editing is the one with the fastest processor. You can only render video as fast as your processor can handle it. RAM or what video card...that doesn't have anything to do with the speed of rendering.

is this laptop suitable for HD video editing?

AliceMayPr

hi.
i'm am currently in the process of looking for a new laptop as my old one;
1. got beer spilt on it
2. its hard drive was full
3. it couldn't cope with the programs i use

i am looking for that can handle editing and playing hd videos at great speed and quality. i have a great editor, but my laptop needs to be able to handle the strain it takes for so much RAM and CPU.
i have found the following laptop, and would like to know weather it is suitable for my needs, and that the hard drive wont get full.

HP Pavilion dv6-3033sa
http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hp-pavilion-dv6-3033sa-06590294-pdt.html

i have a £500 budget, so if there are any laptops that would be of use, please let me know :)
thanks in advance

Answer
After reading the specs I say it's sufficient for video editing but it's not for hardcore gaming. It has a dual core processor which is a plus, 4 GB of RAM is pretty standard for a laptop of that price, the graphic card is a plus, and as long as you think 320 GB is enough space for storage you've got a decent laptop there.

What is the best video editing software to buy?

I am wondering what program i should buy. And what is cheap. Im going to get action essintials 2 from video copilot. what is the best movie editing software to buy for that. IM looking at sony vegas 9 mostly. Maybe Sony Pro but thats 600 bucks so what is the best out there to use that type of stuff. thanks

Answer
I'm using MPEG Video Wizard DVD in conjunction with Powerdirector. For MPEG Video Wizard DVD, I like its powerful editing function (such as auto commercial detective, effects and filters, a/v sync solution, convert format and much much more ) combines with the DVD authoring capability, that I think it's the best choice for intermediate-level users. The only con. is that it cannot capture videos, so I use Powerdirector as my capture software, its UI looks great, as well as its video effects.

Which Camcorder & video editing software should I buy?

DDrew

I need a new camcorder for making movies and uploading them to the internet - I don't know whether to buy a DV or a hard drive based camcorder? I heard a lot of benefits to the hard drive based like you never have to convert the file - but I also hear it is harder to edit and to find editing software for - on the DV end I hear the quality is better, but it uploads to your computer in real time which sucks - but it is the easiest to edit???? please help!

Answer
My experience is with MiniDV camcorders and I would typically use a fire-wire 1394 cable to download video from my camcorder to my PC. This wasn't always problem free.. it would lose a couple frames every once in awhile.. but it worked most of the time.

My preferred software (not sure if you can still buy it anywhere) is Video Factory 2.0 (Sonic Foundry). Of all of the video editting software in the $50 price range, this one beats them all.

Now, there is another thing to keep in mind. When you download the video from your camera (in real time) the software will typically save the video uncompressed (AVI file usually). So, uncompressed video is large and will need to be compressed when you create an MPG video. It's time consuming and hard drive consuming.. but it seems to work just fine.

My last comment would be that for all of the reasons stated above, I would almost prefer to try out a hard drive based camcorder. Not speaking from experience, but the less mechanical parts (i.e. the MiniDV tape) the more reliable you would assume the camera would be.

Also, keep in mind that Windows XP typically comes with basic video editting software. It's not the greatest software but the price is right.

Good Luck!

Recommended Spec For HD Video Editing Laptop?

Mike

The laptop I am currently using struggles when editing videos - and is almost impossible to edit HD videos with. I need something a bit more powerful.

So, what would be the minimum requirements + a bit more, just to be sure?

Answer
Began doing video production for my job at the end of last year. Like you, at the time, I was attempting to edit HD footage with an underpowered laptop, both at work and at home. When I was researching how to upgrade my system, I found this article, which was a really big help: http://www.videoguys.com/Guide/E/Videoguys+System+recommendations+for+Video+Editing/0x4aebb06ba071d2b6a2cd784ce243a6c6.aspx

For home, I bought a Dell Studio XPS 435T: 8GB RAM, i7-920 processor, ATI Radeon HD video card, 750GB storage, and a 24'' monitor. At work, the company got me a Dell business workstation with 12GB RAM and a Xeon processor, with two 22'' monitors. A significant upgrade, to say the least. That may seem superfluous to you, but if you really want to build an HD-capable system, you need to go as beefy as you can.

That's why my advice would be to steer you away from a laptop; with a desktop, you're going to get far more bang for your buck, not to mention a much bigger screen.

It used to take an hour and a half to render a four minute video, and while editing, I was forced to have the preview window at the lowest/smallest resolution, both because of the lack of power and lack of screen real estate--not much fun and horribly time-consuming. Now, it takes eight minutes and I get to have the preview window at the best and biggest resolution, along with a timeline that stretches across two monitors--a whole lot of fun and much more efficient.

Which type of high def camcorder and files are you working with? AVCHD or HDV? Here's a blog post I wrote about my own workflow: http://www.werdofbert.com/2009/08/best-workflow-avchd-convert-editing.html

Any further questions, you can leave a comment and I'll get back to you. Hope this helped your decision!

Do this laptop is good for HD video editing and screen capture ?

Guys I want to make YouTube videos so I'm looking to buy a laptop this one
[ HP Pavilion G6-2301AX Laptop (APU Quad Core A8/ 4GB/ 500GB/ Win8/ 2.5GB Graph) ]

http://www.flipkart.com/hp-pavilion-g6-2301ax-laptop-apu-quad-core-a8-4gb-500gb-win8-2-5gb-graph/p/itmdgtjcmdusnsky?pid=COMDGTJCRYXXV8CE&ref=866d6d15-156a-4034-b274-0007c59d35f8

So please tell me is it good enough for hd video editing /rendering and screen capture my Photoshop works it costs around 530$ and I can't spend much more than that so I want a advice from experts please

Answer
It has pretty good graphics, but the A8-4500M is a bit weak at video edit work, and the A8 gets hot, and especially hot with the added 7670M in dual graphics, plus the HP brand (and Acer and Dell and Lenovo Essentials series) tend to overheat worse than average. It might be a good choice for budget gaming, but the CPU is more important in video edit, and you do want to eventually have 8GB RAM if you can.
In this, and the earlier few years of annual surveys, HP does not do well.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2020725/apple-macbooks-lead-in-laptop-features-and-reliability.html
I also found that snapdeal and a few other sites do beat Flipkart in pricing, and you need to shop around carefully at all of your options before large price purchases.

http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
A8-4500M scores 2719 and the dual graphics does not add much to the HD 7670M anyway.
http://www.flipkart.com/samsung-np350e5c-s01in-laptop-3rd-gen-ci3-4gb-750gb-win8-1gb-graph/p/itmdeh2t6nqhgyse?pid=COMDEH2SRNBYVC2J
is a better choice. i3-3110M and HD 7670M with a larger 750GB HDD. Samsung is using 2x2GB to make the 4GB, and that works better than 1x4GB, but there is no open slot, so to get to 8GB, would need 2x4GB cards and have 2 used cards to sell. i3-3110M scores 3028 and will not overheat as easily as the HP. Rs. 34490 is a little higher than Rs. 33990 and does not include the accidental damage.
The HD 4000 should be good enough for video edit and photoshop but the i5-3210M is much stronger CPU. Price is up again Rs 36799. http://www.snapdeal.com/product/samsung-np300e5ca08in-laptop-intel-core/760620?pos=12;86
Looking to find better still.
and this in between is a graphics improve with an i3-3120M

mac laptop?

Q. my old dell computer broke after a few years, so now my parents said i might be able to get a laptop. a bunch of my friends have mac laptops, and they look awesome with all the cool new features and programs that they have, and i love photobooth and the camera and ichat with video chat. the only problem is that they are extremely expensive, and the cheapest one is still hundreds of dollars more than the cheapest dell laptop. are macs worth getting? is it worth spending the extra money for a mac, or do you all prefer dells? any ideas or suggestions as to whic mac or dell laptops are good? thanks sooo much to anyone who helps. xoxo

Answer
The cheapest mac laptop is going for $1099 in the US, and it comes with loads of software to get you started. So it actually have lots of value for the money you pay. And one model up, one that comes with double the memory, faster processor and DVD writer cost $1299.

See http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.

Here are some of the software that comes free with the mac.
iMovie -- create and editing movie clip for youtube.
iDVD -- put video clip together to create DVD, great software.
iPhoto -- manage digital photo, create picture book/calendar.
Garage band -- mix and create your own music
photo booth, iChat, iWeb, front row and so much more!

Mac is less prone to viruses and malware also. And what's more, here are some of the cool things. A nice mac logo on the lid that lights up when in use, a battery check button at the back lights up a row of LED to show batter indicator, when you close the lid the sleep LED pulse on and off slowly (breathing..) and the power connector lights up to amble when charging and turn to green when charging is completed.

Mac laptops around $1000 capable of editing 720/1080p video ?

What is the minimum spec for a home laptop used for internet browsing, editing photos and occasional videos?

RIK_UK

Any brands that should be avoided?

Answer
Everyone will give you different answers, they're more suggestions than anything. It depends on the minimum requirements of the OS and software you choose.

If you get Vista:
Minimum 2GB RAM, 1.5GHz dual-core processor.
Recommended: 2GB RAM, 2GHz dual-core processor.
Why: Vista uses a lot of memory and processing power.

If you get XP:
Minimum 512MB RAM, 500MHz (Pentium III equivelant) processor.
Recommended: 1GB RAM, 1.0 GHz processor.
Why: For what you are asking, you don't need much - and XP doesn't use much.

More is always better...I'd up the processor before up-ing RAM. The RAM is very easy to upgrade and fairly cheap to change in the future (it just snaps out and a new board snaps in all under an access door on the bottom) but the processor will be very expensive and hard to upgrade and sometimes requires the computer be sent back for service.

Does anyone have the video editing software called sony vegas? ?

rushfan211

If anyone has sony vegas(prefibly version 7) can u send it to me on aim email me and ill give u mi aim. Or maybe if anyone else has anyother sort of video editing software. Please i need it soon. Thanks

Answer
Look here for some video-editing softwares (are free):
http://estsoft.blogspot.com/search/label/video%20editing
Another free alternative: Windows Movie Maker (but it sucks)

But Sony Vegas was and remains the BEST video-editing software, unfortunately you cannot get it FREE (and legally).
If you don't care about legality and still want it free, search it on torrent sites, you can get a torrent client from here http://estsoft.blogspot.com/search/label/torrent

Video editing software?

House of C

Hi there!

I'm looking for a video editing software, with which you can see the preview of several video tracks (at least 3), while editing.

Thanks in advance!

Details:
We recorded a school leavers' ball with 5 camcorders, from 5 different angles, simultaneously and we want to make one full video out of these materials we have. It would be hard to do the editing using a software like Sony Vegas, in which you can see the preview of only one video at a time.

Answer
Hi.

No video editing software is going to let you preview five different shots AT ONCE. To do this, you would have to have 5 separate viewer windows. This simply does not exist.

No matter what edit program you use, you can only preview one thing at a time. Once multiple sources of video are on your time line mixed together, you can view them all at once, but I do not think that's what you're talking about.

If you shot an event with 5 cameras, I assume the cameras were locked down in one spot the entire time. (Unless maybe you had a hand held.) Therefore, it does not seem like you would really need to be constantly previewing the shot. Each camera would be getting a pretty predictable shot. Now if they were all moving around all the time, the shots won't be at all predictable, so the only way to do it is familiarize yourself with the footage first.

Normally, before editing any project, you need to become very familiar with all your footage. You need to watch all your footage and write down what shots you particularly like. You can speed through this fairly quickly if the person editing is already relatively familiar with the footage. This way, you are "previewing" your footage before you actually start editing, not during the actual editing process. This is simply the way it is done. No one EVER should use the editing process to get familiar with their footage. That should be done before actual editing begins. Now during editing, you will have to look at it again and again to remind yourself what is where, but if you sit down to edit a project with no idea what your footage is you are doing it in a dreadfully inefficient way.

Now here is one way you could do it and achieve what you're asking for even though you can not preview more than one shot at a time. I have done this technique before for simple studio shows, but never for something like a dance.

Put all 5 of your cameras video on a separate line in your time line. Obviously, you would have to have a program with at least 5 available video lines to do this. No free program (that I know of) gives you that many lines but more sophisticated programs do.

Once you have all 5 video tracks down in the time line, then it is easy to preview them and compare them to your other shot possibilities. Then you whack out the 4 shots you don't want, leaving the one you do. But honestly, doing it this way for something like a dance would probably not make too much sense. Like I said, I've done it for simple studio shows where the shots are almost all alike and the action and dialogue all needed to be synchronized, but with something like a dance where the video changes drastically and the video does not need to be synced so precisely this method would not make much sense.

I hope this makes sense to you.

what is a good software that contains special effects for video

Answer
Well, if you are looking for a video editing software, I would suggest adobe premiere Pro, avid, apple final cut and sony vegas. But these are professional grade editing softwares. windows XP has a built in software for editing video, look it up at your list of softwares and it is called Windows movie maker, if yer using an Apple, it usually comes with imovie. Also, most third party DVD roms are bundled with decent editing softwares which will fit the need of a video editing enthusiast.

What makes a good gaming and video editing laptop?

Willz

I am going to college in the fall, so I am in need of a good laptop. According to my parents, it is inevitable that I will be getting a PC around $1,000-1,500. I would prefer HP with Windows 7.

Anyways, I want a laptop that would not only run games well, but also run video editing software well. I want to play games like "Minecraft" and other Steam games on high settings without much lagging. I am going to get Adobe Premeire Pro for video editing.

I now that I need a good dedicated graphics card (ex: NVIDIA) for the games, but that's about it. So, what specifications do I need to look for in a good video gaming and video editing laptop?

Thanks!
@TheTurtleGuy: I'd like to have Alienware, but their laptops are WAY too expensive. And like I said, my parents can only give me a laptop around $1,000 to $1,500. Thanks for your answer, though.

Answer
Elements of both a good gaming and video editing laptop are quad core cpu, a decent amount of ram (8gb or 16gb recommended), a high end gpu (depending on resolution).

CPU - i7 intel (the mobile i5 cpus are dual core cpus with 2 additional threads)

GPU -
1366x768 resolution max settings - Radeon HD 7850m or Geforce GTX 660m or better (30-40fps+)

1920x1080 max settings - Radeon HD 7970 or Geforce GTX 680m or better (25+fps)

EDIT: Geforce GTX 650m is also good for 1366x768 if you don't mind scaling back some settings like antaliasing or play at 1080p and cut back on antialiasing and some details.

Should i get an hp laptop or macbook pro?

T!ka :)

At first I was thinking I'd just get an HP g-series because they're not too expensive and have good specs, and I personally just love HP, but now I'm interested in the macbook pro..is it that much better than an HP? Why are macbooks like double the price? Is it just because its a mac or what? BTW I would be using this laptop mostly for downloading videos and albums and PhotoShop. So speed and being able to multitask are important.

Answer
Well mac are double the price because of the name. Kind of like alienware, you get the exact same hardware but it costs more for no reason. The mac OS isnt good enough to make it worth the extra like $400 for a similar hardware windows laptop lol...
Windows has equivalent software, can run photoshop and etc just like mac.

Speed is based on hardware, if you get a $1000 hp vs a $1000 mac, the hp will have much better hardware.
And all the popular apple myths are wrong, especially about them being virus free lol.

Not sure why the macs just got a huge boost in popularity, is it really because of those dumb commercials? yes im a mac and im a pc, even though that is an false statement, because a PC is a personal computer which would also make mac a pc... So i would say that shows just how ignorant apple is....

EDIT: @ its me
Well there you go, that really shows how ignorant mac users are lmao
1) antivirus software is free, and you still need anti virus software on macs too...
2) blue screens are caused almost all the time from hardware issues or corrupt drivers, macs have a similar screen too....
and guess what, people who arnt retarded like you dont get viruses and dont have hardware problems because we actually know how to use a computer....

3) mac are more expensive (almost double the price) of any other windows computer with the EXACT same hardware. and imovie is not that good, i have used it...
4) "top of the line parts" LOL x 10^10, are you retarded? the hardware in macs arnt made by apple, guess what its the EXACT same hardware as any other computer....
5) "mac wont be obsolete in 2 years" yes you are 100% correct, they become obsolete in months.... using a core 2 dou, a over 5year old processor, that will last so much longer then a sandy bridge core i5/i7 that you could get for the same overall price...

Heres a fun fact, most people who have macs, will use something like boot camp to also be able to boot windows! lol, lets compare that to how many people make hackintosh computers (computer not made by mac able to run the mac os).

would i be able to run leopard on a laptop not a mac?

sdfan51

im planning to buy either a sony vaio or apple macbook and i am getting tired of using windows based programs but still familiar with the mac os. if i buy a vaio can i install leopard and would it function normally?

Answer
There are install DVDs for Leopard. This is very difficult and the machine can be unstable, but if you have a newer laptop, it should be ok.

http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

http://hackintosh.org/

You will need to download a hacked Install DVD of leopard. There are plenty on the torrent sites.

If you really want Mac OSX. Just buy the Mac. Your Sony Vaio would be unstable, wireless internet probably would not work, as well as a number of other things. However, getting Max OSX to run on a PC is very cool, but not if you are really wanting to use your laptop everyday.

I edited this post because of the other posts. It is very possible. These other people don't know what they are talking about. I have an HP laptop with Mac OSX Leopard on it right now. After adding some drivers, it runs as good as any Mac can run Mac OSX. Do some research before you give some retarded answer about system architecture. Macs run the same motherboard, processors, memory, video cards as PCs. Its called BIOS.

Just visit the websites. There are thousands of people doing this, and many like me have a lot of luck.

Flip UltraHD or Kodak Playsport ZX3?

ROCZ

I know that everyone's gonna choose the flip, but hear me out.
I'm going on a trip and I want to know which will be more convenient. The features that are making it difficult for me is the battery, sd card, and water capability.
I plan on using the camera fully on my trip, so the flip would be great for that since it uses regular batteries so I could switch them if they ever run out. However, it only depends on internal memory so I can't get an sd card for it. And it's not waterproof (which might be very handy in some cases).
The Kodak has an sd card slot and is waterproof. However, it only depends on the life of the rechargeable battery and I can't recharge it in the middle of a trip because it takes a long time to charge.

HELP... ME...

Answer
I have a Kodak Playsport Zx3 and using the camera is awesome. The software is eh, but if you know anything about video editing you probably have a way to convert the files into a more manageable format than .movThe Flip Ultra is soo much bigger and you have to buy a special case to take it underwater. I bought mine to shoot funny videos and take snorkeling videos on my honeymoon and it works great for both. A word of advice is to try to shoot video for at least 30 seconds when you are shooting because the most trouble I have had with this is with really short videos.

kodak xi8 or playsport for filming (on motorcycle)?

Video Editing:

Sony Vegas: $600
http://sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro

Lightworks; semi-free alternative to Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas.
http://lwks.com

Lightworks has been used in the movie industry for more than 20 years. Lightworks also has the fastest workflow in the industry.

Lightworks used to cost more than $1,000, but now Lightworks Pro costs $60/year and you can download a free version from their website.

Sony Vegas costs $600 and that's the same price as using Lightworks Pro for 10 years.

Editors using Lightworks have produced numerous internationally renowned and Oscar and Emmy award-winning feature films and television programs, including The King's Speech, The Departed, Mission Impossible, Braveheart, and Pulp Fiction.

And yes! Lightworks is FREE if you don't need pro video codecs and you can use the free version as long as you want.

Visual Effects:

After Effects for VFX compositing; $20/month ($240/year)
http://adobe.com/products/aftereffects.html

Blender for 3D animation and VFX; free alternative to Maya and After Effects.
http://blender.org

Blender has a complete VFX pipeline in one single software package. Blender has tools for modeling, sculpting, rigging, animation, rotoscoping, chroma keying (green screen), motion tracking, smoke, fire, and fluid simulation, particles, destruction, physics, color grading, node compositing, and video editing.

After Effects uses "layer-based" compositing. Blender uses "node-based" compositing similar to Nuke; used in the movie industry http://thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke

Blender has more advanced features but After Effects is easier to use.

The easiest and most detailed tutorial on how to use Blender is Neal Hirsig's tutorial at http://gryllus.net/Blender/3D.html

Blender is 100% free with full functionality, no adware, no spyware, and no viruses, and you're allowed to use Blender in any production without having to pay for anything.

What is the best stop motion animation program fo pc's that let you ad voices and edit it and is FREE?

Gen S

Answer
The majority of stop motion programs have features that concentrate on making the stop motion process quicker and easier. They'll usually have some sort of timeline, live video preview, onion skinning, etc. While the better programs will have an audio track where you can import a soundtrack like dialogue in order to help sync your animation to audio, none of them have the full range of capabilities that an audio editing suite or video editing suite. You're especially not going to find a free program that has the features of a 3 separate software suites in one program.

What the majority of people do is compile and fine tune their animation in a stop motion program, then take the video into video editing software to do the larger cuts, transitions and editing. Stop motion programs make it easy to edit, delete, add and rearrange individual frames. Typically, working with individual frames is a hasle in straightforward video editing programs because they weren't made with frame by frame animation in mind. Usually you can import sound in a video editing program, but if you need to do some heavy duty sound mixing and splicing you'd probably be better off doing it in a sound editing program (then importing that sound into a video editing program to put your entire movie together).

To actually frame-grab and compile the movie, I'd suggest using Monkeyjam if you're on a PC. It's free.

http://www.giantscreamingrobotmonkeys.com/monkeyjam/

AnimatorDV: Simple+ became freeware.

If you're on a Mac, you could try Framethief or FramebyFrame (both free).

For free video editing, you can try:

Windows Movie Maker 2 (regular Windows Movie Maker sucks. You should at least upgrade to WMM2 which has better features and more options)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

VideoMach
http://squash.hostbrickmovies.com/VideoMach-2.7.2.exe

VirtuaDub

Avidemux

To do sound editing, you should give Audacity a try.

Answer
You dont say what camera you are using it would have been helpful.

The problem is that AVI is not a video format its a container, and can hold almost any type of video. Even MP4 based video

Your problem is that the video file is huge and you need to reduce the size, you don't need to cut the video.
your best bet is to either convert the video, go here and choose the first one in the list.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/all-in-one-video-converters

then convert the video to something like MPG the quality will be OK, and the file size should be smaller. you can now edit the video,

or use a editing package that supports the video format, if you go here you can use a piece of software to see what the video actually is.

http://www.videohelp.com/tools/sections/codec-video-identifiers

once you have done then use the same video format to export it, Check the file size it should now be ok to upload. you dont say how long the video is, but remember that youtube only allow 10 minutes or 1GB which ever is the biggest.

that should sort you out
