video editing software in windows 8 image

Chaitanya

I just got a new Windows 8 computer and I have to make a video for school, I need some good editing software. Any suggestions?

Answer
How about three very good freeware video editor programs, Freemake, FileLab, or VSDC? Each is safe, fully functioning, no watermarks, will not ask for money, and are recent releases that are HD capable.

They are listed in order of increasing capabilities. Freemake provides merging of video clips, and simple editing such as cutting and splicing. It will also automatically upload your video to YouTube if desired. It is also capable of converting your video to just about any video format in existence. FileLab has much more features, such as color correction, title editor, and special effects. VSDC is an advanced editor, capable of effects such as green screen editing. The following link has more info, but make sure to also view other articles on this site, as they outline other capabilities of these three programs.:

Is there a free movie editing program for Mac that ISN'T iMovie?

yuna_81818

I'm playing around with GarageBand and making small songs just for fun and I'd like to put them into something of a slideshow to upload on YouTube.. but iMovie takes up too much space on my Macbook, so I can't use that. Is there another movie editing program that I could use to put these songs with pictures into a movie format?

Answer
1. Avidemux- http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/index.html

Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and scripting capabilities. Avidemux is available for Linux, BSD, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows under the GNU GPL license.

2. ZS4 Video Editor - http://www.zs4.net/

The new incarnation of Zwei-Stein Video Editor, it is advanced video editing and compositing software with over 150 built-in video effects. ZS4 runs on Windows, Linux and OS X, and is free to download and use. Best of all, itâs under continual development and hasnât been abandoned like some of the programs listed here.

3. HyperEngine-AV - http://sourceforge.net/projects/hyperengine/

Arboretum Systemsâ award winning video editing software became free in 2006 and is can be downloaded complete with full source code. Users can capture, arrange, edit and process video, audio and text in a free-form, trackless document, to create movies and slide shows.

4. Simple Video Splicer - http://www.chipersoft.com/

SVS is a basic video editing tool for basic cropping and/or piecing together of video files. It supports all formats that Quicktime can import, with the exception of MPEG, which must be demuxed first. It features a picture panning tool (aka, the Ken Burns Effect), and an audio track layout editor. Source code is included in the download. The programmer no longer supports the software, and his site, while making the program available, notes, âPlease do not contact me regarding this software, I have not worked on any of it in years.â

Question about Windows 7 and Windows Live Movie Maker?

recommended laptops for video editing 2011 image

caseyw1286

Okay, so I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop that is about 6-7 years old. I'm not sure what exactly the video card is but it is very basic. My laptop has been running Windows Vista ever since I had it. Today, I decided to upgrade to Windows 7. Two days ago (when I still had Vista), I made a slide show using Windows Live Movie Maker. When I updated to 7, I downloaded and tried to open up Live Movie Maker but it said I didn't meet the requirements. I was able to open it up in Vista so I can't understand why it wouldn't open up in 7 since my laptop is the same. Does Windows 7 have different requirements?

Answer
caseyw1286,

Check out the system requirements to install and run the Windows Live Movie Maker.

What are the Movie Maker system requirements?Movie Maker has the following system requirements:

â¢Operating system:

â¢Movie Maker 2011: Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (32-bit or 64-bit versions) or Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit versions)

â¢Movie Maker 2012: Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit versions)

To burn a movie directly to a DVD using Movie Maker, Windows DVD Maker must be installed on your computer. Windows DVD Maker is included in the following operating systems:

Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 7 Ultimate

To record video from a webcam, Movie Maker must be running on Windows 7.

The types of video and audio files you can use in Movie Maker depend on which version and edition of Windows that your computer is running. For more information, see What kind of files can I use in Movie Maker?

â¢Memory: 1 GB of RAM (2 GB of RAM or higher is recommended when editing HD (high-definition) video)

â¢Processor: 2.4 GHz (single processor) or higher (a dual-core processor or higher is recommended when editing HD video)

â¢Internet browser: Internet Explorer 7 (or later), Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 (or later), or Safari 3.1 (or later)

â¢Internet connection: Internet functionality requires dialâup or broadband Internet access (provided separately). Local or longâdistance charges might apply.

â¢Graphics or video card:

Video card or video driver that supports Microsoft DirectX 9.0c (or later) and Pixel Shader 2.0 (or later). For DirectX 9 hardware on Windows 7, go to Windows Update.

To determine the DirectX version that your video card supports, use the Microsoft DirectX Diagnostic Tool. To open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, click the Start button , type dxdiag in the search box, and then, in the list of results, click dxdiag.exe. Click the Display tab, and then look at the value for DDI Version.
â¢Additional required programs: Photo Gallery and Windows Media Player

Notes
â¢To install or uninstall Movie Maker, you must use an administrator account on the computer.

â¢In some cases, the DirectX Diagnostic Tool might not report the Device Driver Interface (DDI) version correctly. For more information, see the article about the DDI version appearing as 9Ex on the Microsoft Support website.

How is the Nintendo 3ds XL?

ilovemyfat

I kind of want to get the bundle online from Walmart, but I'm not too sure how it is? If you own the 3ds XL, how do you like it? Pros and cons? Would you recommend it?

Answer
I really like the 3DS XL. I'm not sure what you want pros and cons compared to. I have a list of things I like compared to the regular 3DS:

-Larger screens, obviously.

-It has a matte finish, which means you really don't see fingerprint marks on the outside.

-The stylus is located on the right side instead of from the behind like it was on the 3DS. Seems annoying to have to reach to the back to get the stylus out rather than from the side.

-Better look, IMO. I mean, I look at a picture like this of the 3DS: http://dvice.com/assets_c/2011/02/3DS-la⦠and it just doesn't look that great. I think the 3DS XL looks much nicer.

-The screen snaps into place at 2 different angles. So when you're opening it, you'll hear a click at one angle (about the angle you'd open up a laptop at), and then again at a larger angle (like a standard gaming angle).

-Less glare (going more by word with this one, as I never really used the 3DS).

-Better 3D. I went to the store one day a few weeks to see what the 3DS looked like and what the 3D looked like, and it took me like 15-30 seconds to angle myself with the display one to see the 3D effect. It really isn't hard to see the 3D on the XL.

-Better device colors. Having seen the display 3DSes at stores, I really wasn't that impressed with the colors. They're alright, but nothing special. I also wasn't that impressed looking at the pictures of the 3DS XL colors on Nintendo's website. But when I pulled out my blue 3DS XL, the color looked amazing. I was and am REALLY happy with the color and wouldn't change a thing about it if I could. So try not to judge the color by the pictures they have, because they're a far cry from how great the colors actually are in person. I also checked on youtube, and you still can't see how good the colors are in videos, you just have to see it in person.

-Better battery life.

-There are probably some other things I'm forgetting.

Plus you can play regular DS games AND 3DS games, whereas anything besides the 3DS and 3DS XL will only play regular DS games.

The portability and pixelation were 2 things I was worried about before purchasing. Portability hasn't been a problem at all like I thought it would - it fits in all my pockets fine. And the pixelation is hardly noticeable. Unless you're actively looking for it, you won't notice it.

I definitely don't regret my purchase at all, so I obviously recommend it. If you want to know anything else about it, just say so and I'll try to edit this :)

Transcode - convert - the video files to a format MovieMaker can deal with.

MPEG StreamClip from www.squared5.com and HandBrake from www.handbrake.fr are both capable transcoders. MovieMaker likes WMV files.

What video editing software should I buy?

Yo Yo 5522

I bought a GoPro Hero video camera last year and have a bunch of skiing video that I would like to make a short movie out of. This is just for fun, but I don't want the movie to look like crap. Currently all my video clips have been collecting metaphorical dust for a year and I want to make good use of them. I really know nothing about video editing software. Is there anything that is under $80, somewhat easy to use, and has a ton of cool features? Something sort of like iMovie but for a PC.

Answer
When it comes to video editing, "cool features" and "easy to use" are mutually exclusive. If you have one, you're not going to have the other. Keep your eyes on the prize and accept the fact that if you want cool features, you're going to have to spend some time hiking up the old learning curve.

Also, with GoPro videos, keep MPEG StreamClip in mind. It's what those "in the know" use to convert GoPro clips.
http://www.squared5.com/

Just about all software is on sale right now and will be on sale through December.
http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdirector-ultra/features_en_US.html
Power Director has a number of different editions to choose from.

Corel's Video Studio Pro Ultimate is on sale (for the same price I paid for the upgrade version last summer:-( This is a huge program that includes a number of high-end plugins, including Boris Graffiti that you can use to make 3D animated titles and captions and ProDad's Vitascene, a workspace with a ton of specialized effects with multiple presets and oodles of controls. The program itself comes with a lot of transitions and effects the majority of which can be customized and key framed.
http://www.corel.com/corel/product/index.jsp?pid=prod4760101&hptrack=na_so_vs15ult_112412
http://www.gripps.net/tutorials.html

This video shows some of what you can do with Vitascene.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlrwJ0zRDpI&feature=related
It's being used in Pinnacle Studio Ultimate, another editor you might consider - although it doesn't see to be on sale right now. Check Best Buy online. Best Buy has it in-store and sometimes has it marked down.
http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consumer+Products/Home+Video/Studio+Family/

And please don't forget that you've got to have a computer that can handle a good video editor. All editors work best with at least 6 Gbs of RAM and a multi-core processor and a hard drive that can speedily move large amounts of data around without studdering and lagging. Most computers can handle the graphics - phew!

I have iMovie 08' but sadly it doesn't have slow motion. Does anybody know if there is a free video editing software compatible with mac that has it? Or does anybody know of one that isn't too expensive, but free would be better. Thanks :)

Answer
If you have a mac, you would use I-Movie. Or you may try this video editor, I always use it to edit HD video and make funny video, my friends recommend it to me, it has 10 times free trial without any limitation, it's clean without any virus, I think it deserves a try.

Any software I can download, changes I can make to iMovie, changes I should make to the gopro that would solve this problem? Thanks again.

Answer
iMovie is an editor, not a media player. While it is common to expect that the video playback during editing should be perfect, that is not what editors are for.

Generally, the "choppy" display you report is common to high definition video playback when the computer CPU is too slow, there is not enough RAM or not enough available hard disc space to effectively deal with the very computer-resource-intense needs of working with high definition video.

The only things you can do are to replace the Mac with one that has a faster CPU, add more RAM (4 gig is OK, but more is better) and have at least 1/3 of the internal start-up drive available. But since we don't know what the Mac environment is, this could be invalid. (Note that this is not a Mac-only issue - the same symptoms will be experienced on a Windows based machine if it it underpowered.)

After editing, when you export the video to a compressed version, then things should improve when playing back the video.

should i get a gopro hero 3? or is there something better?

Im getting into filming, and i want to get a camera that has great fps...
My dslr nikon d5000 kinda sucks to be recording with. The new GoPro Hero 3 Black edition has 1080p and 60fps. I want to do a lot of shots where slow motion will reel in the viewers attention. Is there any other cameras out there that will benefit an amateur directors needs?

Answer
Hi "Anonymous:"

Even a regular, off-the-shelf camcorder is going to give you 20% better frame-rate than the 24fps your Nikon D5000 is limited to shooting in video mode.

Keep in mind that the GoPro Hero series are a fixed-lens wide-angle system designed for action Point Of View shots, mounted on a subject or vehicle, and not for "narrative" or normal day to day shots. Your audience might get bored with the constant barrel-distortion, if that's all you shot with.

For myself and other video professionals, a GoPro (or other action camera) is just one tool out of many to use in shooting a production. Other shooters have had good luck with the H3 Black's 1080-progressive @60fps setting, for later slow-down & achieving smooth slo-mo sequences.

But if you plan on mixing footage between cameras, normally I'd caution you to set both cameras at 720p (since that's what your Nikon is limited to), but one DP Review author was disappointed with the H3 Black's 720p footage "artifacts" and image noise. See: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/1284782993/gopro-hero-3-black-setup-guide

I know you are just around 17 and starting out, but if you've invested in more than one Nikon lens (good glass, and not cheap), you might save your $400+ dollars towards getting a newer Nikon body-only with a faster frame rate (720p @60fps, and 1080p @30fps). Or shop around for one of the Sony NEX or Handycam models that offer Super Slow Motion (120fps & 240fps) in short 16- and 8-second bursts, and offer better lensing than the GoPro.

With the Sony NEX systems, you can get a Nikon-to-Sony lens adapter, to allow you to use your current Nikon lens investment.

And depending on what edit software you use, there are software slow-motion rendering options that do a better job of slo-mo sequences than what you might be currently using.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

There are times when sharing exactly what you see on your screen is the quickest and clearest way to communicate. You can capture and anything, any window, part of the screen or full screen to AVI or WMV video formats.

Instruct others with quick How-to Illustrations, demonstrate a product, create a presentation with your own audio narration, make a voiceover tutorial, or walk through a Website review. Version 4.8 has improved frame rate and selection of audio devices.

What is a good laptop for my boyrfriend?

Bianca C

My boyfriend's birthday is coming up and I would like to buy him a nice laptop. I know nothing about computers so I'm a bit intimidated.. I want to buy him a great gift...I was thinking of possibly a mac but our IT guy at our job advised me not to. My boyfriend attends college so he would probably use the laptop for doing hw, using the internet, downloading music and watching some movies. Any ideas??

Answer
The best advice that I could give you is to go to tigerdirect.com, cnet.com, or newegg.com for cheap prices. Websites such as these can give you wonderful reviews on laptops and their specs, and also show a good idea of pricing as well. It wouldn't be very wise to buy a mac if you don't know too much about them. (I own one and would know). Your best bet would probably to get him a cheap laptop that would last him over his college career. These days, laptops are coming to the point to where they can become disposable, which means that it's not really worth it to go out and buy an $1,100.00 laptop, when your only going to use it for music, homework, and some movies. If you were going to game, video edit, graphic edit, or play around with photos and such, then I would suggest a higher-end computer for you. =]

Ben

Something more or less simple to use, although I understand that video editing software is usually complicated.

Answer
Here's a roundup of some of the free ones:

Microsoft Live Movie Maker 2011 -- WMM is already installed on computers that are running Windows XP and Vista. But if you have Vista or 7, you can use the latest version:
http://explore.live.com/windows-live-movie-maker

You may add 3rd party effects that don't come with the WLMM with this:
http://www.thefxarchive.com/index.php?category=WLMM_2011

VirtualDub -- may lack the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. You can take a captured clip, trim the ends, clean up some of the noise, convert it to the proper frame size, and write out a better one. Remove and replace audio tracks without touching the video. It has extensive video filter set, including blur, sharpen, emboss, smooth, 3x3 convolution, flip, resize rotate, brightness/contrast, levels, deinterlace, and threshold.
http://www.virtualdub.org

Avidemux -- a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. Trim, add filters and even encode video. You can remove the audio portion of a video file, or remove the video portion and retain the audio part, among others. You can even reformat and resize your videos. It's a great and effective free video editing software for those who havenât obtained much, if any, experience in video editing. In addition to powerful scripting within Avidemux, it supports a slew of video file types such as AVI, MPEG files, MP4, ASF and more.
http://avidemux.sourceforge.net

Blender -- a 3D graphics video creation program which hosts a variety of features. These include modeling, animation, rendering, post-production and real-time interactive 3D, as well as game creation. Playback with cross-platform compatibility for Blender is also included along with support for Windows, Mac and Linux.
http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/

Zwei-Stein -- a great free video editing software, but the user interface is very technical. It is full featured, offering many different effects. There are up to 64 effects, which can be chained serially.
http://www.thugsatbay.com/tab/?q=zweistein

Wax -- a high performance and flexible free video editing software program, good for both home users and professionals. It can create 2D & 3D special effects and can work in two modes - as a standalone application which would appeal for home users/beginners, and as a "plug-in" to video editors/NLEs which would be more useful for professional editors.

How to make a good youtube gaming commentary?

video editing software gaming

video editing software gaming image

Mackenzie

I'm starting a new gaming commentary series and I'd like to know how to make a good commentary. I have a mic, video editing software and the game. All i need are the tips. Any help please?

Answer
Honestly... The best idea is to watch the commentary of other people that have been successful doing the same thing and mimic them. But for starters, speak loud enough so everyone can hear you. Nobody is going to suffer through a video commentary they can't hear.

Keep the "ums" and "ahs" to a minimum. It's boring listening to someone stutter through their video "so here I am... Ummm... I'm about to get a gun... Umm..." you get the idea.

Keep it interesting. Don't just talk about what you are doing, that's why you have the video clips for people to see. Talk about helpful hints, tips, tricks, good hiding spots and stuff like that to keep it fresh, give some good information, and help the viewers out while you are playing through the games.

Make sure your videos are action packed. If you are just walking around not doing anything special, nobody is going to watch because they can just play the game and do that for themselves. You need to be actively doing something special. Taking on a huge number of zombies, or in a game like Modern Warfare, collecting some massive kill streaks.

Finally, speak with confidence. If you talk timidly, you are going to come across as very dry, dull, and boring. Again, nobody is going to suffer through a boring video when they have the "back" button right there and can just as easily click on somebody elses video.

Hope that helps, and good luck with your videos!

I know it requires firewire. However, I have a firewire port already on my computer and the cable. The issue is that the camera does not display itself as a driver on my computer. I have heard a bit about the "legacy drivers" but i don't know much. I used to run xp, everything worked fine on there. Why won't it work on Windows 7? Any ideas?

Answer
You don't need drivers, you do need video editing software, even if it is just Windows Movie Maker.

W7 64 does not install with WMM, you have to download it (free) from Microsoft.

Does no harm to install the Canon software, but it should not be required.

Plug in firewire cord, then turn camera on to "Play" (slider back toward battery end of camera).

What capturing software should I use with my Pinnacle Movie Studio capture device?

Q. I'm running Windows 7 64x, and I'm having difficulty recording content not due to the low performance of my PC, but due to the buggy Pinnacle Movie Studio 11 software. It typically crashes every time I open it, and it has a hard time detecting the analog input I have going into the device.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer
The reason Pinnacle crashes is not working for you is because it is a 32-bit based program and does not run well on 64-bit systems.

As for recording content, you could dazzle (a pinnacle digital video recorder), some third party dvr, or a built-in tv tuner to record video off a camera onto your computer. If you have a hdd camera you can just copy via usb.

Once the video is on your computer, you can edit with windows movie maker. If you need a more advanced editor try sony vegas. If you are familiar with the Pinnacle interface and prefer that, you can use video spin, which is a free version of pinnacle, minus some features.

If you want to use Pinnacle you will just have to wait for them to release a 64-bit version or use a 32-bit operating system, perhaps on another computer? I have windows 7 32-bit running on my mac and i run pinnacle with very few problems.
