What are some good programs to install on a laptop with Ubuntu Linux ?

Jesus

Answer
VLC is the cross-platform Swiss Army knife of media players. It's lightweight, open source, and can play virtually any fileâaudio or videoâthat you throw at it. If you're really into VLC, you can even use it rip DVDs, fix out-of-sync audio and video, and play your ripped DVDs. VLC has no media library tools, but you can create and save playlists. Either way, the slim, no-nonsense player has found a home on countless Windows, Mac, and Linux installs.

Stellarium is a free and open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. It boasts of a star catalogue with over 600,000 stars.

GnuCash provides accounting functions suitable for use by small businesses and individuals. It can track finances in multiple accounts, keeping running and reconciled balances. There is support for customer, vendor and employee processing.

Blender is one of the most popular open source applications ever. Blender is basically a free and open-source 3D modelling and rendering application which is also cross platform. Short films and animations created using Blender has been an instant hit across the web.

As you should know, Ubuntu Software Center completely replaced Synaptic during the last release cycle. But even with all its improvements, Ubuntu Software Center is not anywhere near as slick or functional as Synaptic yet. So you might want to install and use Synaptic until Software Center is more 'complete'. Expected changes for upcoming Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin release include many improvements and feature additions for Ubuntu Software Center, so that we can expect a more solid release next time around.

Shutter is perhaps the most comprehensive tool for easy capturing, editing and sharing of screenshots. Really must have app for bloggers, have been using Shutter like forever.

Mumble is a voice over IP application primarily designed for use by gamers, similar to programs such as TeamSpeak and Ventrilo. Many reviewers have rated Mumble above both TeamSpeak and Ventrilo apparently. Mumble features noise suppression, automatic gain control and low latency audio with support for multiple audio standards.

Uget is a simple, lightweight and easy-to-use download manager. It is fast, responsive and does what it is supposed to do rather well.

GIMP needs no introduction. It is simply the best image editor application for Linux. Until a few releases back, GIMP was among the default choice of applications for vanilla Ubuntu. It has now been replaced with more light weight applications.

RawTherapee is used to adjust some of the most often changed parameters when optimizing digital images. It was one of the first raw converters available for Linux with a reasonably usable GUI. A good application to try out for hardcore photographers.

Darktable is a good alternative to Adobe's Lightroom application. It enables you to develop raw images and enhance them. All editing with Darktable is fully non-destructive and only operates on cached image buffers for display. The full image is only converted during export.

Inkscape is a free and open source, cross platform, vector graphics editor with capabilities similar to Illustrator and CorelDraw, using SVG file format.

OpenShot Video Editor is a free and open-source non-linear video editor. It can create and edit videos and movies using many popular video, audio, and image formats. Though user reviews have generally been positive, many hard core users still prefer KDenLive.

Calibre manages your e-book collection for you. Calibre is a free and open source tool as well. It even supports e-book syncing with a variety of popular e-book readers out there.

will this laptop be good for video editing?

Jn Dan

So I'm going to college and I'm getting a new laptop, I'm going to study to become a media assistant (video, photo, music editing etc.) so the specs are:
Intel Core i5-3337U 1.8 GHz CPU
4 GB DDR3 RAM (Upgradable to 8 GB)
AMD Radeon HD 7450M 1GB GPU
500 GB HDD (I will also buy an external 1 TB or something)
And Windows 8 64-bit
will it be enough for my needs? (Video, Music and Photo editing)

Answer
Yes, that laptop would be very good for your needs, but something with an Intel core i7, or an
AMD A-10 would be even better. The i7 is the fastest and most powerful laptop processor available right now. The latest Gen A-10 performs better than an i5 in most apps, but not quite as good as the i7. The
A-10 has an added advantage if you film any video from a camcorder and do not use a tri-pod, and that is it has a technology called steady cam built right into the processor. When you playback or edit the video using your computer with the A-10 processor, it will automatically smooth out the shakiness.
Here are a few to consider available from Best Buy:

HP - ENVY Sleekbook 15.6" Laptop Model: m6-k010dx SKU: 9268048 $649.99
AMD A-10 Quad Core Accelerated Processing Unit Latest Gen
6GB DDR3 RAM
750GB Hard Drive
Radeon HD 8610m Graphics

HP - ENVY TouchSmart Sleekbook Model: m6-k012dx SKU: 9268057 $729.99
AMD A-10 Quad Core Accelerated Processing Unit Latest Gen
8GB DDR3 RAM
1TB Hard Drive
15.6" Capacitive Touchscreen
Radeon HD 8610m Graphics

Asus - 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop Model: Q550LF-BBI7T07 SKU: 8937158 $999.99
Intel Core i7 4th Gen
8GB DDR3 RAM
15.6" touchscreen with full 1080p HD resolution
1TB Hard Drive
Voice Recognition Software pre-installed
NVIDIA GT 745m Graphics

The above listed ASUS gives the most bang for the buck, and ASUS has a great reputation.

whats a good program to create music videos at any price?

XxCancerxX

Im in a band,
It doesnt matter how much it cost, i just need a good video editing software mainly for music videos

Answer
If you want a good simple program, try Adobe Premiere. Lots of good stuff; allows for standard transitions, chroma key (green screen), some basic video stuff (color and light) and some OK filters. Premiere is great for just cutting and pasting large amounts of video, adding some transitions, and correcting for color and/or adding some basic effects like lens flares or jitter/noise.

If you want to step it up, try Adobe After Effects. It allows you to use compositions (nesting video elements within video) to have various layers of video used. It's basically like Photoshop for video (if you've ever used PS). You can use different transfer modes, various light 3D effects, and some very useful filters. It's confusing for some. This is the one I work with, and I can assure you the plugins available are vast and useful. Especially Red Giant plugins (Soundkeys is useful) where you can match the movement of things to the music just by using a plugin (instead of having to keyframe everything by hand).

If you are on a Mac, try using Final Cut Pro. Very expensive, but is basically like Adobe Premiere and After Effects wrapped up into one. It has the functionality of both and plugins as well.

Does anyone know any good editing systems?

MossclawHa

Any movie editing systems for a windows that are good and reasonably priced. Im looking for one and cant find it!

Answer
Personally I think if you are talking traditional splice based editing Quicktime Pro. Underrated. If you are talking about more involved editing styles with effects and timeline control over effects then you are looking more at software such as Adobe Premiere. There really is a multitude of editing software about but it seems to me that each program excels in one or more areas. More creative people are using Adobe After Effects but I don't really see that strictly as an editing system so much as a creative moving image manipulation system. Recently I was looking for a program where feedback of video was more 'interactive'. By that I mean when you scrub the timeline I wanted instantaneous (or near to) video feedback that was smooth. I tried Sony Vegas Video Pro and was actually quite impressed with the response and smoothness of operation and there was no major lag or jitter on playback. The more realtime the better and I found that option worked for me :)

Free video editing software?

Anglaris

I would like to know if there is and if so; where to download a very good, useful and eventually advanced video editing software for my computer. I got a 2010 Macbook Pro (Operative system: Mac OS X)
PS: I already got iMovie. It was already on my computer when I got it. But that's a amature video editing software. I want something more professional.
None of these answers helped me much. Either it costs money, it is unable to download or I have it already.

Answer
A much more professional video editing software, maybe you have to pay for it, like Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro. You can go www.apple.com site to learn more. At the same time, get a mac total video converter, like this site www.mac-videoconverter.com because many popular videos can't directly be put into Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro. Hope it helps!

What's a good video editing software for Windows?

KitKat

I can't afford a Mac, but I badly want Final Cut Express. Is there anything really similar that works on Windows? Or can Final Cut Pro/Express work? Thanks!
Thanks!

Although, Sony Vegas has caught my eye.
Do you think it's better than Final Cut?

Answer
I've been editing Video for 4 years and I've used both Final cut Pro and Sony vegas.

Sony Vegas is NOT better than Final Cut. You can't get FCP to run on windows, so I'll leave you with some windows options:

Sony Vegas Pro 10.0
AVID Media Composer
Adobe Premiere CS5

I highly recommend AVID Media composer, It's FCP's major competitor and is a very powerful editing software.

Here are some major films that have been edited on AVID:

Die Another Day (2002)
Just Like Heaven (2005)
Transformers (2007)
Iron Man (2008)
Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Avatar (2009)
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Predators (2010)
The Expendables (2010)
Black Swan (2010)
127 Hours (2010)
Inception (2010)
Unstoppable (2010)
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)
Tron Legacy (2010)

Answer
Hello friend, There are some excellent software especially for YouTube editing. They are,

1. Pinnacle Studio 16 Ultimate
With an attractive interface, a multitude of video effects and the ability to upload directly to Facebook, Vimeo, Box and YouTube, Pinnacle Studio has long been a favorite in video editing. While it is one of the more expensive options in this list, and it doesnât have 4K UHD support, Pinnacle serves as a nice middle-ground option for those who arenât slackers in the video editing department, but who havenât reached pro status just yet.

2. AVS Video Editor
Packed with more than 670 transitions and effects, 46 text options and 34 templates for disc menus, AVS is surprisingly simple to use and customize. Users need only drag and drop the desired effect into place.Editing videos is quick and easy, and AVS supports multiple formats, such as HD, MPEG, AVI, WMV, QuickTime, Adobe Flash, mobile video, Real Networks and WebM files, among others.

3. Adobe Premiere Elements 11
Those used to the Adobe Suite will instantly recognize this familiar setup. Version 11 of Adobe Premiere Elements comes with new effects, such as cinematic FilmLooks, slow motion and speeding up. Elements takes the best features of Adobeâs professional version of the software, Premiere Pro, and makes them simplified and user friendly.

4. Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3
Appleâs revamped video editing software boasts speedier performance, a friendlier interface, auditions for alternate clips, good organization tools, powerful new multicam support and support for both Thunderbolt and studio-monitor output. While you canât import projects from previous Final Cut versions without a third-party plugin, this new software is a consumer-friendly upgrade to a pro-level Mac editor.

Please help me find a cheap laptop for video editing?

Szymon

It has to be a laptop that cost 570pounds (could be a little bit higher)The laptop has to have 6 or 8 gb ram, intel core i5 or higher, 1.5 or 2gb graphics card,15.6"(preferable) or 17" screen.
Remember it has to be a good laptop for video editing and avalible in northern Ireland to buy.

Answer
You probably won't get something suitable for the price you want, unless you get it second hand. Look into possibly a second hand Toshiba Satellite, or something similar. However, you'll need a fairly high end model to get what you need. For something that's seriously good, expect to pay more than your budget; my 2 computers I use for editing were over £1000 each, and I still had to upgrade RAM to something more powerful.

I hope this helps.

What is a good, relatively cheap Laptop for Video Editing?

jvaske093

I'm looking for a laptop that will be able to handle some short film video editing. It wouldn't be used exclusively for that and I'm looking for something below $800

Answer
Video editing machine needs both a powerful Processor & Graphic card.

Asus, Dell, HP etc...You should compare them all, but you find Acer totally dominates this price range, in terms of gear it gives that translates to overall performance.

I suggest having a look at the Acer Aspire 15" http://www.dpbolvw.net/l8122biroiq59EA9A9A576AA6EFD?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.newegg.com%2FProduct%2FProduct.aspx%3FItem%3DN82E16834115795%26nm_mc%3DAFC-C8Junction%26cm_mmc%3DAFC-C8Junction-_-Notebooks-_-Acer%2BAmerica-_-34115795&cjsku=N82E16834115795 . Comes with intel "Core i5-450M" (Dual Core) processor & nvidia "GT 330M" graphic card, its performance will be identical to $1,799 - 15" Macbook Pro.

If you like it bigger & even more powerful, Acer Aspire 17" http://www.jdoqocy.com/qn72uoxuowBFKGFGFGBDCGGCKLJ?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.newegg.com%2FProduct%2FProduct.aspx%3FItem%3DN82E16834115792%26nm_mc%3DAFC-C8Junction%26cm_mmc%3DAFC-C8Junction-_-Notebooks-_-Acer%2BAmerica-_-34115792&cjsku=N82E16834115792 . Comes with the new amd "Phenom II N830" (Triple Core), this is equivalent to "Core i5 540M" & Radeon "HD 5650" which is faster than GT 330M, means this machine's graphic ablility will be faster than Macbook Pro.

What computer should I get for video editing? 21 inch Imac, 13 inch Macbook Pro (2012), or Alienware mx14?

Joe

I want to get a new computer for video editing. I use Adobe Premiere, FCP X (Sometimes), and After Effects. Although I would want an Imac, im on the fence if i should get a laptop instead. Laptop wise, Im considering the 13 inch Macbook pro or the Alienware mx14. The macbook pro is Mac (I prefer os x over windows) so i can still use FCP and it has the ivy bridge processor. The alienware looks awesome, and you can customize settings such as graphic cards and screen resolution. In addition it has a blue ray player and im also into gaming. But laptops over heat, in which the imac doesnt as much. Which should i get? (BTW I have a budget of 1700, so I cant get the mac pro)

Answer
21 inch iMac, is great for video editing. Big screen, bright display. For the graphics, the Alienware will run smooth for video editing, you'll get good FPS. MacBook Pro not much great for video editing, small screen.

best video&picture editing 13-14" laptop?

sanammm

hey there! I've been looking for a new laptop that's really good for picture & video editing, under $1000. I'm really interested in a laptop that I can carry around, any suggestions? thaankyouu for your time (:

Answer
You don't need to spent $1000 for a laptop for best video and picture when you can get all of the requirement with relatively less price. ASUS VivoBook X202E-DH31T is one of the option for which you can opt for because of its good processor and portable size which is your requirement as well.

Look at this for further details:

http://www.amazon.com/VivoBook-X202E-DH31T-11-6-Inch-Touch-Laptop/dp/B009F1I1C4/ref=zg_bs_565108_6/186-7454226-0721317&tag=faowiw-20

It has further features which includes Intel Core i3-3217U 1.8 GHz Processor which is really good one to have for video and picture editing and 4 GB DDR3. It has a storage of 500 GB 5400 rpm Hard Drive and 11.6-Inch LED Touchscreen, Intel GMA HD Graphics which is not only small and portable but also touchscreen is a extra nice feature to have. So overall it is really a good laptop with good price.

Here is a good comment from an actual user:

Do mac laptops and computers have video editing programs?

KoolDude

Do they? And what video formats (such as avi, wmv, mpeg, etc....) do they accept.

Answer
Sure do - video editing came to Macs way before it came to Windows computers. All current consumer Macs come with Apple's iMovie application pre-installed for free, but there are plenty of other options if you want to go semi-pro or even fully pro. The next step up for many users would be Apple Final Cut Express, and many Hollywood movies these days are edited on the high end Final Cut Pro. (All these applications are Apple-branded and Mac-only - no Windows version - though of course you can export your work in plenty of formats that will play on all platforms.)

For more info on iMovie, see http://www.apple.com/imovie/ and follow the links from that page. In particular, regarding formats and compatibility, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290

If you want more info on the higher end apps, see http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/ or http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/ Apple also makes companion high-end apps that do soundtracks, video grading, digital effects etc - see the links on the left of the Final Cut Pro page. But note that that these are serious professional tools, with a considerable learning curve, and hefty price-tags, so start with iMovie! And don't overlook iDVD (also free with a new Mac), which helps you create professional-looking DVDs with animated menus, etc, just like store-bought ones.

Finally, you also have non-Apple apps that are designed to run on Macs. For one 3rd-party option, Google "Adobe Premiere".

Buying my first laptop/netbook?

lkathleen

I'm a huge noob when it comes to laptops, I don't know what I'm doing at allll haha.
so I want to buy a laptop (or maybe a netbook?). I'd be mostly using it for homework, but also for stuff like skyping and facebook, and I definitely need flash.
I'd be doing a lot of word processing on it, and maybe a little video and photo editing. I don't want it to be too heavy so I can take it traveling, but still have a decent amount of memory... any suggestions? tips on buying laptops? I don't want to spend a ton of money though.
thankss :)

Answer
In my opinion, nowadays, 4GB of RAM memory is enough to don't have to worry about the memory issue. I have windows 7 with 4GB of RAM, and though I use to open a lot of programs at the same time, I never had a memory problem with my computer.

A good way to decide which laptop you should buy is by looking at the best selling laptops list, because that tells you what most people are deciding to buy right now.

The most sold PC laptop at this moment, and the one that I will recommend to you, is the Toshiba Satellite L755-S5271. It has a 15.6-Inch LED screen and 4GB of RAM. You can buy it new for $499.99, but if you want something cheaper with these same characteristics, you can buy instead the HP ProBook 4530s XU015UT for $449.99.

Take a look here to see a list of the best selling laptops in Amazon.com:

http://romcartridge.blogspot.com/2011/07/best-selling-laptops.html

Good luck!

Mac or PC laptops for video editing?

rymen7

I plan to make skateboard videos and want to no if a Mac or PC laptop would be better??

Answer
Good gawds - talk about childish answers. We've obviously got Mac and PC fans that have no real information other than promoting their favorite platform.

The truth is - EITHER. But out of the box I would say a Mac simply because iMovie is far superior to Windows Movie Maker. Although WMM has become a fairly usable program with each consecutive release.

If you plan on using something more powerful than iMovie or WMM - say something in the prosumer category like Adobe Premiere Pro on the PC or Final Cut Pro on the Mac then use the platform of your choice. Bare this in mind - a lower end laptop PC won't cut it - but you won't have to spend the change you'd have to spend on a Mac. A Core2 duo CPU, 2 Gig or RAM or more, a good sized hard drive and a IEEE1394 interface (firewire/iLink) will get you started. Personally I'd stay away from AMD CPUs, but that's your choice. I'd also upgrade from a Vista 32bit OS to the 64bit Ultimate. You can pick up a laptop like that for under $1000 pretty easily.

mac laptop?

Q. my old dell computer broke after a few years, so now my parents said i might be able to get a laptop. a bunch of my friends have mac laptops, and they look awesome with all the cool new features and programs that they have, and i love photobooth and the camera and ichat with video chat. the only problem is that they are extremely expensive, and the cheapest one is still hundreds of dollars more than the cheapest dell laptop. are macs worth getting? is it worth spending the extra money for a mac, or do you all prefer dells? any ideas or suggestions as to whic mac or dell laptops are good? thanks sooo much to anyone who helps. xoxo

Answer
The cheapest mac laptop is going for $1099 in the US, and it comes with loads of software to get you started. So it actually have lots of value for the money you pay. And one model up, one that comes with double the memory, faster processor and DVD writer cost $1299.

See http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.

Here are some of the software that comes free with the mac.
iMovie -- create and editing movie clip for youtube.
iDVD -- put video clip together to create DVD, great software.
iPhoto -- manage digital photo, create picture book/calendar.
Garage band -- mix and create your own music
photo booth, iChat, iWeb, front row and so much more!

Mac is less prone to viruses and malware also. And what's more, here are some of the cool things. A nice mac logo on the lid that lights up when in use, a battery check button at the back lights up a row of LED to show batter indicator, when you close the lid the sleep LED pulse on and off slowly (breathing..) and the power connector lights up to amble when charging and turn to green when charging is completed.

What is the best (affordable) video editing software?

Early Cuyl

I want to basically cut/paste clips and create my own videos.

Answer
If you're running a Windows machine, then you've already got Movie Maker installed (Start>All Programs). I started out learning video editing using WMM 2.1 for XP. A good first step for a beginner or just-for-fun user, but lacks advanced features like layering via multiple tracks.

Wax 2.0e is a video editor free for download online (http://www.debugmode.com/wax/). In terms of features, it's a step up from WMM--allows for multiple tracks and is capable of chroma keying (effect for green screening).

I currently use Sony Vegas Pro 8.0; at a few hundred dollars for purchase, I certainly wouldn't call it affordable. However, Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum has many of the same upper-level features and effects, but only costs $85 (http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/vegasfamily.asp).

If you're just getting into video editing or want only basic features, I'd recommend trying out Movie Maker first. If you end up wanting to do something more advanced, you can always move up to Wax or Vegas Movie Studio.

How do people on youtube edit their videos?

Hayley.

I need to know how people like bubzbeauty and alyssaxabcission edit their videos to put the words and music.DO NOT put one true media.
um,first answerer, actually they both have millions of views and thousands of subscribers.

Answer
they go out and buy some video editing software. personally, i have vegas movie studio 8.0 to edit my videos. there's a lot of features you can use with video editing software, including inserting text and music. if you have windows (and don't want to pay for anything) then click on start and then type in the search box "windows movie maker" and click on the first thing that pops up. this is a decent, free video editing software that is actually pretty good. if you need help with editing videos, you can find tutorials on youtube easily.

What's the best FREE web video recording software I can get legally?

FurryFan

I'm facing a bit of trouble here...all I just wanted to do was to record some videos of my sessions in my online video games, so I tried getting some web recording software. I disregarded FRAPS because the only way it will record my videos well is if I pay for the full version. I tried using HyperCam, but after I recorded my videos, when I played it, the video appears to go super fast no matter WHAT FPS speed I set on it. Please, help me out greatly in this...the game is Rumble Fighter, BTW.

And I'm using Vista too.

Answer
Camstudio â With Camstudio you can record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs).

2> Jing â With Jing you can Snap a picture of your screen. Record video of onscreen action. Share instantly over the web, IM, email.

3> Windows Media Encoder â Windows Media Encoder is a powerful tool for content producers who want to capture audio and video content using the many innovations in Windows Media, including high-quality multichannel sound, high-definition video quality, and support for mixed-mode voice and music content.

4> Virtualdub â VirtualDub is a video capture/processing utility for 32-bit Windows platforms (95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP), licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It lacks the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. It has batch-processing capabilities for processing large numbers of files and can be extended with third-party video filters. VirtualDub is mainly geared toward processing AVI files, although it can read (not write) MPEG-1 and also handle sets of BMP images.

5> Wink â Wink is a Tutorial and Presentation creation software, primarily aimed at creating tutorials on how to use software (like a tutor for MS-Word/Excel etc). Using Wink you can capture screenshots, add explanations boxes, buttons, titles etc and generate a highly effective tutorial for your users.

6> XVidCap â XVidCap is a small tool to capture things going on on an X-Windows display to either individual frames or an MPEG video. On Windows machines there are commercial tools like Lotus ScreenCam or Camtasia which do a very good job esp. for the purpose I was needing such a tool for: Software documentation, esp. installation procedures and such

7> FFMPEG â FFmpeg is free software and is licensed under the LGPL or GPL depending on your choice of configuration options. If you use FFmpeg or its constituent libraries, you must adhere to the terms of the license in question. If you do not, we will track down your project and list it in our Hall of Shame. To see how easy it is to comply, take a look at our license and legal considerations page.

8> Screen Toatser - No download. Compatible with Windows, Mac OS X, Linux. Capture videos of onscreen action in one click. Record screencasts, tutorials, demos, training, lectures and more. Share and stream videos online in Flash. Embed them on blogs and webpages or send them by email.

9> TipCam â Free screencast recorder for Windows. Record your screen and voice in a flash video (FLV format) and share it instantly at uTIPu.com

10> HyperCam â HyperCam captures the action from your Windows screen and saves it to AVI (Audio-Video Interleaved) movie file. Sound from your system microphone is also recorded.

Is a 2010 MacBook pro a good dj, audio, video editing device?

Donovan Co

Going to buy one of these cause I need a new laptop for my classes that I'm getting into at school. Broadcasting media

Answer
When it comes to broadcast media, Mac > PC. Yes, you can tweak a PC to run with a Mac. But why jump through a bunch of hoops to get the PC to run well when the Mac does it straight out of the box!

I have used both...
I have a PC with Premiere and Vegas, and a MBP with Final Cut. I edit videos on both and use my MacBook Pro to DJ, with music videos, at nightclubs.

As for the comment of "much more software available (pc)"... Yes, there are more titles available for PC, but you don't need them. Final Cut Pro is the best. Most movies and even TV shows are edited in FCP

But to answer your original question, Is a 2010 MacBook pro a good dj, audio, video editing device?
Yes, the best choice.

While you certainly don't NEED a Mac, they are considered the best laptops for use in the audio/video industry. They have a much tighter integration between hardware and software, and use industry leading parts and manufacturing.

As for Price - many PC magazines (PC, not just computer) have done comparative analysis on the actual cost bang for buck, and found Macs either comparable or cheaper than equivalent PCs! So a lower end Mac will often be better than a 'faster or bigger' sounding PC.

Conclusion: I think some Windows programs are good at somethings and Apple apps are better at other things. But you cannot run Apple apps on a PC, and you CAN run Windows programs on a Mac if you put Windows on the Mac.
As was stated earlier:
The answer is "Get a Mac."

15 inch 2011 Macbook pro or 2010 for video editing?

icefireboy

I am going to be doing the 12 month payment thing for either one but still i want it to be as low as possible. I will be editing a lot hd videos on final cut express 4 which i will buy with the computer. I think i will be getting 8gb of ram i heard its good for video editing. Now i wont be gaming so none of those answers. And should i just go with the cheaper 2010 15 inch or go with the 2011? Also with the refurbished ones how. Can i add the option to add the $200 for 8gb ram.

Answer
For video? You need as many processor cores as you can spare cash for.

The new 15" and 17" MacBook Pro's have quad cores (hyperthreading doubles to 8 cores) and 64 bit processors, the 2010 have dual cores and 32 bit processors..

The 64bit allows you to have 8GB of RAM, the 32bit only uses 3.6GB, so you want the new 2011 models for sure unless you plan to ditch the computer in a year or two anyway.

You also need dedicated graphics, even if you don't 3D game, for video as the inferior integrated graphics makes the CPU overheat, which restricts performance as it self-hobbles to keep the heat down.

Video needs a lot of performance, a desktop MacPro would be ideal as a video platform for the absolute best performance (twice as much as a top of the line MacBook Pro), but you lack portability.

If you go cheap and 32 bit 2010 refurbished, your going to be making a huge mistake as dual cores are on their way out due to their 3.6GB RAM limits. I have 7 year old 15" Intel Core 2 dual, not a bad machine still, but not so much for video.

Quad core 64 bit is the future for the next 10 years and their laptops just came out two weeks ago. :)

Best PC laptop for video editing?

Music Is M

Hi!

I'm a film student looking to buy a new laptop this week, but I don't want to spend more than $1,200. I want the best possible quality I can get! I know macs are the big thing but on my budget I feel like I can get a faster/better computer in that price range by getting a PC. Also I edit with Avid Media Composer and Adobe premier/suite so if you know a laptop that handles those well... let me know!

Suggestions??

Also are computers that are good for gaming also good for video editing? I was checking out graphics cards and gaming computers seem to have the best ones!

Any opinions on this Toshiba?
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cdetland.to?poid=2000044488

Btw... I'm pretty skeptical about hp laptops because my last two broke and they always overheat!
To clarify, I am not looking for a gaming computer or a mac! Just a computer that will run fast and support intense video editing!

Answer
The Toshiba Qosmio X870 you're looking at isn't a good choice. The problem with that laptop is that it comes with a 17.3" 1600x900 display (as opposed to a 17.3" 1920x1080 display). 1600x900 resolution in a 17.3" display makes things onscreen large, and 17.3" displays that have 1600x900 resolution tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. You should make a point to avoid displays like this (15.6" 1366x768, 17.3" 1600x900, etc.) when it is reasonable to do so, unless you require the larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

This is more of an issue than a lot of other things. For example, an i5-3210M (as opposed to maybe an i7-3630QM) is not a terrible processor, a GTX 660M (as opposed to maybe a GTX 670M) is not a terrible GPU, but a 17.3" 1600x900 display is a terrible display. You need to be concerned with improving a display that's pretty bad before you start focusing on other aspects that are already pretty good in a lot of models.

Also note that things like the 12GB RAM, 3GB video memory, etc. are there purely for marketing purposes. They don't improve your gaming experience. You are not going to notice a difference in gaming by having more than ~8GB, and if you end up needing more in other programs than keep in mind that it's very cheap and easy to add more memory in after-market if you get a computer that has less memory than you need. As for the video memory: A 1.5GB GTX 670M is just as good as the 3GB version. The video memory is not the bottleneck, the GPU chip itself is. You'll see essentially the same performance on a 1.5GB version as you'll see on a version with unlimited memory.

What video camera should I buy?

seangriffe

What camera should I buy?
I want to shoot a 30 minute short film, but I want the quality to be... movie theater quality. You know quality that looks like the quality you would see at the movies.

Is it that there is a program I must download for that?

Answer
There are things in paid editing software to emulate movie looks.

Technically, however, you need HD at 24 FPS to get movie look.

The best camcorder I've seen for general production use is the Canon XL2 if you have the $4K to buy it.

It does SD at 24 FPS.

4k tv technology help?

Raphael

what kind of graphics card would handle it easily or at all?

Answer
Such cards are available now, but they are very high-end and are designed to go in professional editing systems. Here, for example, is a 4K-capable video capture card with HDMI In and Out, able to handle 4:2:2 and even 4:4:4 formats, as well as 3D:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=&sku=892446&is=REG&Q=&A=details

You can probably imagine if the video card is nearly $1K the price for a rig to handle everything else (very fast parallel processing, very high-res monitor, very large/fast HDDs to handle vast amounts of data, etc), not to mention the software package - well, it's pretty top-of-the mountain type stuff.
Just a card for the display costs as much as a cheaper PC:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2313386&SRCCODE=WEBGOOPA&cm_mmc_o=mH4CjC7BBTkwCjCV1-CjCE&gclid=CI2N-I_6oLYCFY9DMgod5mcAJw

So, be assured, since people are already buying 4K cameras, and with TV and other manufacturers with $ in their eyes, 4K and 8K are coming. The only problem is, with the speed of technological change, just about anything you get now will be obsolete in a few years when things really start going...

I currently use Vegas in Windows 7 and I hate 8.

So if I get a 13-inch: 2.9 GHz (i7) with a SSD Macbook Pro. What is the best video editing software?

Answer
Why? Are you planning to work in the video editing business? If so, think twice about buying a dinky little notebook for real work. You need a Mac Pro. No video editor uses fewer than three displays. No notebook can use more than two.

For software, 49% of pro movie editors use Final Cut Pro, with Avid Media Composer users at a distant second place 22%. No one in Hollywood uses Sony.

Is there any way you can get caught for using a keygen for Sony Vegas?

Answer
It's not really likely, though it is a little unethical to use a keygen. If you're just using Vegas to do non-professional homey stuff, I guess it's not so bad, but if you're using it to make/edit video or audio that you're going to sell, that's pretty unethical. As for if you'll get caught: probably not, and if you are, the software could be locked up, but not worse than that.

My girlfriend is wanting to try her hand at being a Youtube star and has set me on the task of finding her a video editing software. If you can point me in the right direction of finding the best free or extremely cheap program it would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
FileLab is a freeware video editing program for just about all platforms (Mac, PC, etc...). I use it a lot to make YouTube videos. It runs in your browser using a simple plug-in download. It has many transition and video effects, very good title editor, and customized color correction to include brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, and gamma. This tutorial on FileLab was made with FileLab
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYbAe-mUscs

VSDC is also freeware, but has much more advanced capabilities than FileLab, such as green screen! It's not as obvious or easy to use as FileLab, but did I already mention it has green screen (chroma key), and it's free? Also, it is capable of editing in most most popular video formats and compression schemes including high definition (HD), AVI, H.264, MP4, MKV, MTS, 3GP, WMV, QT, MP3, MPEG2 FLV, SWF. YouTube. Get it now while it's free because eventually this will go payware.

which dell laptop is best for video editing and graphics purpose?

Suman

I am searching a laptop for video editing and graphics job. Also i want to do compilation of software and web development job through laptop. I need a such type of laptop of DELL company. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Suman,

As you want to use the system for video editing and graphics intensive applications, I would suggest that you order a system with discrete video card, or better still, one with NVidia Optimus or AMD Switchable Graphics technology, that can utilize both integrated and discrete Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). This would allow you to use the discrete GPU for graphic intensive applications and integrated one for normal use to save power. The system should also have a good processor and maximum possible memory.

As you would be using the system for work, getting a Solid State Drive (SSD) instead of a regular hard drive would also be a great idea. SSD does not have moving parts like a conventional hard drive, and therefore, is less prone to failure, providing better data safety.

A custom configured Dell XPS would be my choice for the job. You may look for, customize and order a Dell laptop on the following link:

Hope this helps.

The software that came with my digital video camera is old and doesn't work on my machine, what should I use?

Brent B

My digital video camera is from 2001. The software that came with it is compatible up to windows 98. I loaded the software, but my computer doesn't even recognize my camera. Is there free software that I can use to import the video off of my digital video camera, onto my computer, and eventually upload to youtube.com? I have a Sony digital 8.
I'm using xp for my os. I've tried to go to the company's web-site, but it is no longer available.

Answer
A Sony Digital 8 camcorder will transfer video to your computer using Firewire. You need to add a firewire port to your computer and use a firewire cable connected to it and the camera's DV port. (most likely a 4-pin camera to 6-pin computer iEEE1394a cable).

USB will not work.

Once the firewire port is working and you connect the camcorder and the camcorder is in "Play/Edit" mode, Movie Maker or WinDV will be able to import the video from the camcorder.

Anybody here think Linux Gentoo is a good OS for a beginner with Linux and should i build my own computer?

Ive grown up with computers since 1992. Ive used Windows 3.0, 95, 98, NT, XP, and i recently switched to Mac os x 10 and leopard.

Which linux os is good? Can it do everything windows can including playing pc games and dos games. How about video editing, burning dvds, cds, blurays and sound editing?

Answer
It is a matter of opinion but I believe Ubuntu is an easier Linux distro to start with. As far as gaming is concerned...Linux is getting better, but still falls a bit short. Video, burning...etc. is as capable or better than Windows in most respects. Any Debian based distro is great as the Debian repositories of softwares are huge...much larger than that of the RPM based repositories.

Answer
Here's a list of some of the free ones:

Windows Movie Maker -- WMM is already installed on computers that are running Windows XP and Vista. But if you have Vista or 7, you can use the latest version:

You may add 3rd party effects that don't come with the WLMM with this:

VirtualDub -- may lack the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. You can take a captured clip, trim the ends, clean up some of the noise, convert it to the proper frame size, and write out a better one. Remove and replace audio tracks without touching the video. It has extensive video filter set, including blur, sharpen, emboss, smooth, 3x3 convolution, flip, resize rotate, brightness/contrast, levels, deinterlace, and threshold.

Avidemux -- a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. Trim, add filters and even encode video. You can remove the audio portion of a video file, or remove the video portion and retain the audio part, among others. You can even reformat and resize your videos. It's a great and effective free video editing software for those who havenât obtained much, if any, experience in video editing.

Blender -- a 3D graphics video creation program which hosts a variety of features. These include modeling, animation, rendering, post-production and real-time interactive 3D, as well as game creation.

Zwei-Stein -- a great free video editing software, but the user interface is very technical. It is full featured, offering many different effects. There are up to 64 effects, which can be chained serially.

Wax -- a high performance and flexible free video editing software program, good for both home users and professionals. It can create 2D & 3D special effects and can work in two modes - as a standalone application which would appeal for home users/beginners, and as a "plug-in" to video editors/NLEs which would be more useful for professional editors.

VSDC Free Video Editor -- It's the only free advanced video editor with chroma key editing, and even split screen editing. With a full support for dozens of video codecs and formats including but not limiting to AVI, MP4, MKV, MPG, WMV, 3GP, FLV for video; MP3, WAV, WMA, FLAC, PCM, OGG, AAC, M4A, AMR for audio; and BMP, JPG, PNG, PSD, ICO, TIFF for images, VSDC Free Video Editor provides one of the easiest ways to combine multiple source chunks in different formats into a resulting high-quality video.

Are you familiar with those green compositing stuff that you hear in the movie editing world? This software can do that. Here's a sample of what it can do:

Note that this software is free but comes with a stupid 'Conduit Toolbar' it is trying to promote. It gets installed on your browser. You can easily remove that toolbar by going to Control Panel ⺠Uninstall a Program. select 'Conduit Toolbar' from the list of currently installed programs, and uninstall. Next, if you are using Mozilla Firefox, click the Firefox menu ⺠Add-Ons ⺠Extensions tab. Find and click on Conduit Toolbar and select Remove. Restart your browser afterwards.

Do you know any video editing software and where I can download it?

I've recently been making action videos and editing them with windows movie maker. However, it takes me about over 6 hours to edit it. I was wondering what is a very good video editing software that doesn't require a 32 bit system? Also, I do use a lot of muzzle flashes in my videos.

I have a HD camera and need a good, reliable Video editing software. My price range is $60 (USD). I can't use Adobe After Effects because I have a 32 Bit laptop, and I can't use Windows Movie maker because it messes up the quality.
