I just bought a nikon D7000 but I need a much better computer to edit movies. Is a intel i5 processor on laptops enough to edit full HD videos ?

Answer
Are you assuming that there is only one Intel Core i5 processor? Because there are several.
There are these 13 first generation Core i5 mobile processors
http://ark.intel.com/products/family/59141/Previous-Generation-Intel-Core-i5-Processor/mobile
... and there are these 7 more second generation Core i5 mobile processors
http://ark.intel.com/products/family/59134/2nd-Generation-Intel-Core-i5-Processors/mobile

So... which processor are you talking about? Because some of those would be better than others. Can you use any of them? Of course... you have already discovered you can edit full HD Video without a Core i5 processor... you have been doing so. So, obviously you can edit video with one as well. But you are referencing whether or not a Core i5 processor will be an improvement over your current computer.

This fails because you have provided no frame of reference. We would need to know your old computer specifications, and we would need a specific Core i5 processor to compare to your old CPU.

Thanks.

What is better: A Quad Core with a Intel HD 4000 or a Dual Core with a GT 635M?

Ken

I'm currently looking at budget laptops for college. I'm considering the Lenovo Z580 line of laptops at the moment and I'm conflicted on which is a better buy: an Intel Core i7-3520M 2.9GHz with Intel HD 4000 or an Intel Core i5 3210M 2.50GHz with an nVidia GT 635M graphics card. I am planning to do some casual gaming on the machine (League of Legends, Minecraft, etc) as well as use it for video editing and music making.
The video card has 1 GB of dedicated video memory.
Also, they're around the same price, give or take 10 or so dollars.

Answer
For gaming, go for the better video card (635M). Most games use only one core, so multi core does not help gaming as much as better video cards. Make sure the 635m has dedicated video ram, not shared system ram... (otherwise they will be about the same...)

I need a laptop that can handle large amounts of HD video footage and can run after effects and imovie quickly, I believe this means I need lots of RAM. If someone could suggest a good mac laptop for a decent price, it would be an easy 10 points, thanks.

Answer
There are a number of factors that affect HD video processing, not just RAM.
1. The video card
2. Video memory
3. Speed of hard drive
4. RAM
5. Processor cores and speed.
The only Macbooks suitable for your needs would be the 15" 2.6GHz models and if you want maximum RAM (16GB) then only the retina display one.
That starts at $2800 and with max RAM would cost you $3K.
Notice that it has a better video card, more video memory (1GB of GDDR5), a quad core processor, a fast HD (5400 rpm is way too slow) and is upgradeable to 16GB of RAM.
The only thing missing is the decent price.
Best,

How much processing power does my computer need to edit HD video?

marmenta44

I recently purchased an HD camcorder and was wondering how strong of a computer do I need to edit the HD video without getting frustrated at lag? I currently have a 2.16 GHZ macbook with 2 GB RAM. Im assuming this is not enough?

Answer
It depends what kind of HD you're talking about. HDV brought in as HDV is a hard one to edit. DVCPro HD is a lot easier on the system for editing. And 720 is easier than 1080. AVCHD (or whatever they're calling it now) I believe is fairly easy to edit as well.

I would be a bit curious how well HDV would hold up for you, but other formats, on the described laptop should hold up okay. But that's based on the footage being connected in a fast manner. Because that's another potential bottleneck.

If you're storing the files on the same hard drive as your editing software that's a tough demand on the system and will harm performance, regardless of codec. If you put the files onto an external drive, then it depends how you're hooking that up. USB isn't editor friendly. I know some people that play with fire and use it, but its a unidirectional communication, so not good for editing. Firewire 400 is far better, but still a bit sketchy for HD. Preferably you would want Firewire 800 or eSata.

-----
Ignore the first post. After Effects is not video editing. Its a whole other beast. You should be able to push your system a lot harder for editing than for visual effects (which is what AE is for).

I am using a JVC digital video camera for a project and need to know how to get the videos onto the computer. I also need to edit them, preferably with Windows Movie Maker as it is all that I have. The camera uses Mini DV tapes. So do you know whether or not it is possible?

Answer
Your computer MUST have a firewire port. USB is used ONLY for transferring stills from the memory card (maybe for USB streaming - most camcorders cannot do this). Laptops typically use PCMCIA or ExpressCard slots; desktops use PCI slots. Firewire, i.LINK, IEEE1394 and DV are all the same thing.

USB won't work. Even if, by some miracle, you manage to get USB streaming working, the video quality transferred will not be DV (or HDV, if your camcorder has this capability). USB-firewire converter/adapter/cable things will not work.

Three alternatives:
1) Get another computer that has a firewire port.

2) Get an external drive and borrow a computer with a firewire port. Save the imported video to the external drive, disconnect, then connect to your computer.

3) Get an "analog/digital bridge" that connects using USB. Pinnacle makes the Dazzle. Video quality will be reduced - but not as bad as USB streaming.

Since you did not tell us which computer, this is about as much help that is possible.

How do I import video from my Sony Handycam DCR-TRV260 to Windows Movie Maker?

Tate C

Whenever I try to import video from my Handycam to WMM, a box comes up saying "Import Video could not find a compatible digital video device..." I know that this camcorder isn't compatible with Vista, so what can I do? Is there anything I can download to make it compatible?

Answer
By design, usb won't work w/ Vista...but possible w/XP

DCR-TRV260, a digital-8 vcam ,must be DV~Firewire400**-connected to computer to upload video thru video editing* or capture application while vcam is ON PLAYBACK. Most (digital) tape vcams have 4-pin DV ports; before cable purchase** check pc or mac for DV port {VCAM@4-pin=>firewireCABLE=>PC@4/ 6-pin?}. If none, install firewire card: pci for desktop or pcmcia / express for laptop.

How do i fix my webcam so that i can record a video?

I'm on my Dell Inspiron, & i'm using Dell Webcam Centra l. I'm trying to record a video on it but everytime i want to record one, it fails to record and says there may be a problem with the video capture and audio recording device. What do i do?!

Answer
Hi Nicole, and welcome to Yahoo!Answers:

The first thing to determine is whether your Webcam works at all... have you already used it on Skype or for other normal webcam "live" uses? If its worked before, chances are the Webcam and its software drivers are installed OK. One quick way to see if your Webcam is installed properly is to open the Windows Control Panel for "Scanners & Cameras" ("Start" --> "Control Panel" --> "Scanners & Cameras"). You should see your Webcam listed along with "Add Device".

In that case, the error you are getting is common when you've left open ("active") another app or webpage that uses the camera and its microphone. That would cause the video recording to fail. Just make sure you close all other browsers and programs that might access your Webcam, and try recording again.

If you aren't sure if your Webcam has ever worked, then see if your Dell has the AMCap test program loaded anywhere. (Or you can download the trial version from CNet's Download.com: http://download.cnet.com/AMCap/3001-13633_4-10504734.html?spi=4f057f670665f8f5c6d794f76f81cdef&dlm=0 ) Dell Computers sometimes includes either "Dell Webcam Center 2.0" or "Dell Webcam Manager 1.0" (written by the same Creative Technology Ltd. folks who wrote "Dell Webcam Central") in your Programs list when you buy a Dell with built-in camera, so try any utilities or test programs you find in one of those Program Folders.

AMCap is good for testing out your Webcam and doing test recordings. Programmer Noel Danjou updated the original Microsoft version, so if the CNet link above doesn't work, go to Noel's CNet profile page, and you'll see an AMCap download link there: http://download.cnet.com/windows/noel-danjou/3260-20_4-70616.html

The other way to test your Webcam is to launch Windows Movie Maker (called "Movie Maker Live" on recent WinOS versions). Click on "Tasks", then select "Capture from video device", and you'll either see Webcam video or an error message. You might find Movie Maker an easier way to record your videos using your Webcam, since it allows easy editing, titles, and effects.

Dell Computers also has excellent online and telephone support for their customers. Just jot down your Dell Asset Tag (or full model & serial # info found underneath your laptop) and log onto http://support.dell.com for more help. They can help you with re-installing your Webcam drivers, if that's needed.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Do anyone know any FREE video editing softwares that are virus free?

Ray

Can you list or name some/a free video editing soft ware that's virus free. I want to keep my laptop virus free. I want it to last a long time.

Anyways, I'm going to post videos on the internet and I have nothing to edit them with.

So, for the third time or so, can you list any FREE video editing softwares that is virus free and my laptop will stay proptected.

Answer
Rather than list them, which would only be my opinion, I recommend you go to CNET's download site. They have almost all the best software for most things and video is a hot item. You will get editor's and user's ratings, comments, and if CNET doesn't have virus-free software, nobody else will do any better.

One warning: read ALL the comments before downloading, because some software turns out to be scamware that does nothing and is really difficult to remove. If the thing has been on there long enough, real indicative comments will start to be pretty obvious.

How do you make gaming videos?

video editing software staples image

Lexi

I love playing video games and I want to make videos but I have no clue how to do it? I see a bunch of different ways online but they're so confusing. Does anybody know how to record game play, what editing system is needed, how to voice over and add video, etc? I would preferably rather buy the software and everything else needed in a store then off line. I use a ps3 and pc. if that helps.

Answer
Allow me to help! Prepare for a wall of text.

I record PC games using DXTORY, which is fantastic. It's about the same price as FRAPS, which is the more popular software, but DXTORY has a nicer UI and apparently causes fewer performance issues. Both around £25, if memory serves.

A great video describing how to get the most out of DXTORY is listed in my sources, by jackfrags on YouTube.

You need a microphone to record your voice and you'd better make sure it's good quality. You need:
1. Dynamic Headset Microphone.
2. Condenser Microphone

The first is what you find on quality headsets and are cheaper than the second, so it's a good starting point. The second are microphones that are too big for headsets and will sit on your desk/on a mic stand. These are often connected to an external sound card. The "Blue" series of mics are a staple for YouTube and are plugged in, I think, just via USB.
The Blue "Snowball" is a cheap starting point, but the Blue "Yeti" is the better option. I'm saving up for the Yeti myself.

Yogscast Dynamic examples are listed as:
- Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000
- Razer / Steelseries Headsets
- Audio Technica BPHS1

Yogscast say the following about condenser mics:
"For an affordable condenser microphone I would recommend something like the sE2000 Mk2, however you can easily spend a large amount of money on these microphones.
As far as external sound cards go, another good and reliable piece of kit is the Focusrite 2i2 USB interface. Combine that with something like the Rhode PSA-1 table clamp stand to hold your microphone, and you have a very capable audio recording setup"

You can use DXTORY to take your mic input directly, but when dealing with multiplayer, or other softwares, you will need something else to record the mic. I think just about everyone agrees that Audacity is the program you need. It's free and open source. Link in sources.
You can use it to record your mic audio AND as an audio editor, all for free.

That's PC game recording sorted. Now, onto your consoles. My recommendation is the Elgato HD Capture Card. Capture cards (good ones) are fairly expensive, but this one's not too bad and it is very good! Easy to set up, easy to use and gives you high quality, low file size content.

If you want to record webgames, like Happy Wheels, you will need some sort of screen recording software. I have not been able to find a decent free software yet, but I hear good things about Camtasia, but you have to pay for that.

Once you have recorded your game video and audio, you'll need to edit it. These softwares are expensive, but worth it.

A free one to use, until you can afford a proper editing program, is Windows Movie Maker. Windows Live Movie Maker is available for Win 7 and Win 8, and an older program, Windows Movie Maker 2.6 is for operating systems before that. Might be wrong on the OS compatibilities, but I think that's right. Simple to cut clips and add simple edits.

Two programs you should aim for are Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere Pro. These are the two "best" out there. I'm currently saving for Vegas, but these are very expensive. Once you learn how these work your content will be fantastic. It's what all the pros use.

I think I've covered everything.
- PC recording - Check
- Audio recording - Check
- Console recording - Check
- Screen recording - Check
- Video editing - Check

If you want to record "FaceCam", you can record either directly in Movie Maker (not tried this), or better yet use a screen recorder (like Camtasia) and edit it over your game video using Vegas or Premiere.

If you are recording multiplayer please do not use Skype for audio. Please encourage people to use Mumble for voice chat. Or Ventrillo, or the very least TeamSpeak. Mumble is so fast, lightweight and gives good quality. You don't want your mic quality to go to waste, or lag to mess up your flow.

Okay, I really hope this helped! Good luck. Send me a message on YouTube when you've started your channel and I'll be happy to take a look. My channel in sources.

What are the best brands for laptops that aren't too expensive?

EmilyTheSt

I am trying to find a great laptop, but i need to know which brands/kinds to look for.
Thank you!

Answer
I'm typing on an HP G62 that I got from Staples for $380 6 months ago. Should be cheaper now. It does everything I need to do, including editing video. I have no idea why people pay over $400, then they buy more software on top of that. I only use open source, free software. I run Ubuntu Linux, got no problem with viruses. LibreOffice, better than Microsoft Office. Gimp, good as Photoshop.

How do you download from a Sony Camcorder to a laptop for editing without an ilink cable?

I have a USB cable but because I use Vista it is not compatible. Any patches or fixes for this problem?

Answer
Honestly, your best bet for transferring video from a Sony camcorder is to use an i.Link cable. Keep in mind, i.Link is nothing more than Sony's name for a Firewire cable (IEEE-1394). I use a 6-pin to 4-pin firewire cable all the time from several Sony camcorders, transferring video to both PC's and laptops running Vista. Works perfectly (and quickly)!

You can pick up a 6-pin to 4-pin Firewire (i.Link) cable at places like Best Buy. Shopping online though could save you $$$.

For example, Cable Stockroom has a 10 foot, 6-pin to 4-pin Firewire cable for a little over 5 bucks. A lot cheaper even with shipping. Here's the link specifically for that item:
http://www.cablestockroom.com/IEEE_1394_6P_4P_Firewire_Cable_10ft_p/10e3-02110.htm

Just make sure you select the proper pinout for each end! Your camcorder should have the small 4-pin, while a PC or laptop normally uses the 6-pin configuration.

Hope that helps!

I want to buy a new laptop. How fast does it really need to be?

voiceofrea

I use my laptop for the same things that most of you do. Surfing the web, answering emails, downloading musci, and the occasional photo editing (very seldom). How much machine do I REALLY need. I know that the new Duo Core machines are cool and all, but do I really need that much speed. Someone recently told me that a Celeron 1.5 with 512K of ram and 64mb of video is more than enough. Is this true? Also the idea of a Sling Box interest me. Does the Sling Box require a faster machine to use it properly? Thanks in advance.
I know that some of you subscribe to the more, better, greater formula but lets face it, I only need what I need. I don't want to pay double the price for something I do not need. If I can get by with a Celeron instead of a Pentium or Duo Core then that is what I want. I have tried all three syatems by surfing the web with them and I can't tell a difference between them.

Answer
Most of what you hear is hype - the core DUO machines are really use-full in two real world scenarios - if your a gamer or your into digital production. i.e. graphic design / video editing. Would you believe you can still function quite well With a machine running with a proc speed of around 1GHZ. Most are going to argue that this is false or pretentious - but, the hardware we are led to believe as "superior" is really the market attempting to get you to spend 3K on a MAC or duo setup. That type of hardware configuration is really exceptional in needed environments like super- computing or as mentioned above. To run normal computing like e-mail, word processing, DVD burning etc. you can get fine performance from machines, from today's standards, are "inferior" - my advice - don't buy into all the hype.

I would like to get an editing software like the MacBook's ($999) which i was looking to get, but way outta my price range.
my price range is around $400.
And for editing videos.
But i thought the MacBook comes with a free video editing program?

Answer
good luck rendering videos with a computer thats under $400. i strongly suggest saving up more money. save up enough money to buy a computer with an Intel i5 proccesor atleast if you want to do videos editing.

if you dont want to do that then make absolutly sure that the computer you get has a dual core proccessor. Intel processor are generally better than AMD. go for atleast 4Gb of RAM. and i would suggest buying an external hard drive to hold all the videos, cause in your $$ range the harddrive will fill up FAST.

As for a program for editing there are plenty of free softwares that any Windows computer can download off the internet. i would suggest asking which one is the best under the computers>software section of Yahoo answers.

How to transfere video shots fom camera tape to computer?

essamhasby

I have a panasonic digital camera model NV-GS11 and want to know how to transfere video shots from the camera tape to the computer

Answer
Hi Essam:

The Panasonic camcorder you have (NV-GS11) is a Mini-DV cassette model using FireWire (IEEE 1394 "DV" port) for digital video output. So for transferring the digital signal to computer, you need a FireWire port on the PC.

From a couple of your earlier Yahoo!Answer posts, you've mentioned having a Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop (the past 5-8 years), which does not have FireWire built-in. But that laptop does have a PC-Card accessory slot, which can accept a FireWire card (typically $15-$50 USD online or on eBay).

If you have a newer laptop or computer, it might already have FireWire capability; if not, then a simple FireWire accessory upgrade will be necessary to best transfer your tapes to computer.

Read the Wikipedia article listed in my Sources below, so that you know the proper cable type to use between the camcorder and your PC. (A FireWire 4-pin plug at one end is needed for the camera connection; the other end will either be 4-pin or 6-pin, depending on the PC's port or adapter card.)

As far as video editing & transfer software, your Windows XP came with "Windows Movie Maker", which can be used along with the FireWire interface to import and edit your videotapes. Other editing software (Sony Vegas, AVID Pinnacle Studio, Adobe Premiere, etc.) is also available for this task.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Reasonably priced video editing software?

Shaun

I am looking for video editing software to make movies with cool effects. Some examples would be light saber effects and noises. Gun shots (sparks at the tip of gun to simulate firing). Digital blood splatter from gunshot or knife. and maybe some explosions. I'm not looking to create the effects, just looking for pre-rendered effects that I can place on the screen. Good titles and openings would be nice as well.

Answer
If you are looking for special effects such as light sabers, lasers, running on roof tops then you will need Adobe After Effects very good program that can produce some genuine looking film effects however does take some learning and cost a lot.
http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects
I have used a few video editing programs and the easiest one has been DVD Slideshow Builder. Very easy to use with professional features and same sort of layout as Movie Maker however a lot more powerful and much cheaper than Adobe After Effects .

What is the difference between a netbook/notebook and a laptop, and which one should I get?

small laptop for video editing image

Kristen H

I would like a portable, small laptop or notebook/net-book. I don't know what the difference is, or which one I should buy. I need it to store word documents for school, to get on the internet, and possibly watch dvds. What should I do?

Answer
First, let us start differentiating them with regards to their physical size. Normally, a laptopâs dimensions would vary from 10x8 inches (13â display) to 15x11inches (17â display) and up. Its thickness would range from 0.7-1.5 inches. It would weigh 3 to 12 pounds (1.4 to 5.4 kg) depending on its brand and model. Older models usually weigh heavier and possess wider dimensions. Netbooks, on the other hand have dimensions that would range below 5 inches to 13 inches. It is lighter compared to laptops because it usually weighs 2 to 3 pounds. For mobilityâs sake, netbooks got the score.

In terms of features, Netbooks have built in WiFi, Ethernet, USB ports and slots dedicated for memory cards. However, it does not have a CD drive or DVD drive. This is the reason why itâs relatively smaller and lighter compared to laptops. All of its peripheral devices are external and can only be connected via the USB port. Laptops, on the other hand have all of its peripheral devices intact. Newer versions of laptops also possess built in WiFi, USB ports, memory card slots, Ethernet, Bluetooth SD Card connectivity, built in webcam plus a lot more of features that a conventional netbook canât support.

Next in line, is with regards to its computing power. Netbooks available today, have processor speed that would range from 0.4 to 1.6 GHz and a storage size that would vary from 4 to 160 GB. Its RAM has a capability to process 0.5 to 1.5 GB of information depending on its model type. While laptops, have a processing speed of 1.6-2.4 GHz and a massive storage size which would vary from 20-250 GB of hard drive. Its RAM would range from 1 to 4 GB depending on the model. Obviously, laptops are capable to handle heavy applications such as video editing and hard core gaming. Netbooks on the other hand is ideal for accessing web applications, cloud computing, and Word processing applications.

In practice, there is no clear definition as to what are the price boundaries of these two products. This is due to the computer companiesâ freedom to state the prices of their products. However in standards, the ideal price of netbooks would range from $200
up to $500. Anything above $500 should be identified as a laptop.

What is the best laptop for me?

Justin

I want to buy a laptop for under 1000 dollars. I usually do stuff like photo and video editing, play games, make videos with adobe after effects, photoshop, website development, listening to a lot of music, and other general stuff. I would like it to at least have 8gb ram, over 500gb hard drive, and a fast processor to do all the things that I like to do. I also want something with a 15 in. + screen, but if it's smaller that will be ok. Touch screen and windows 8 would be nice too but not needed.

Answer
What kind of games are you talking about?
if its light gaming like facebook games to starcraft 2. I'd say just get a macbook pro since your photoediting
If your playing games like battlefield 3, youll probably want a republic of gaming from Asus laptop.

I'm personally a fan of Asus since I have gotten 3 laptops from them and I don't really like how people think Macs are better than PCs because theyre not. UNLESS your photo or video editing.

DONT get alienware...the only thing good about alienware is their tech support, and that only lasts as long as you ordered it to be.

Steve

I need a 1080p laptop for full hd video editing. My teacher said I would need 8gb ram for hd video rendering, do I need this or is a 4gb or 6gb fine? What are the ups for getting an 8gb?

Answer
yes, you will need at least 8GB if you want to do uncompressed HD editing without lag. i have 4GB on my MacBook Pro 15" and i can run Final Cut Pro 7 no problems with compressed HD.

4 or 6GB should be fine if its compressed.

im on a Mac though, and this might be different for PC's

can I edit full HD video from my DSLR camera with intel i5 laptop?

Dave1982

Thanks.

What video editing software do they use to make funny remixes from original videos on youtube?

Lupo R

Answer
ry Windows Movie Maker, which comes free with Windows XP system by default. It usually locates under
C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe
If this one doesn't work, try some other commercial movie making software for more advanced options, for example, I use Wondershare DVD Slideshow Builder to make youtube videos and burn DVDs.
FYI:From the news on photo slideshow blog, there is a 60% off special offer for it.
