I have a pc computer and I'm looking for the best video editing software. I want somthing that can play a soundtrack in the background (without song lyrics), speed up/slow down clips, trim clips, and place clips together to make a movie. I want to make a youtube channel and I need a good editor that I can download to do that:) any suggestions???

Answer
Here's a list of some of the free ones:

Windows Movie Maker -- WMM is already installed on computers that are running Windows XP and Vista. But if you have Vista or 7, you can use the latest version:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/movie-maker-get-started

You may add 3rd party effects that don't come with the WLMM with this:
http://www.thefxarchive.com/index.php?category=WLMM_2011

VirtualDub -- may lack the editing power of a general-purpose editor such as Adobe Premiere, but is streamlined for fast linear operations over video. You can take a captured clip, trim the ends, clean up some of the noise, convert it to the proper frame size, and write out a better one. Remove and replace audio tracks without touching the video. It has extensive video filter set, including blur, sharpen, emboss, smooth, 3x3 convolution, flip, resize rotate, brightness/contrast, levels, deinterlace, and threshold.
http://www.virtualdub.org

Avidemux -- a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. Trim, add filters and even encode video. You can remove the audio portion of a video file, or remove the video portion and retain the audio part, among others. You can even reformat and resize your videos. It's a great and effective free video editing software for those who havenât obtained much, if any, experience in video editing.
http://avidemux.sourceforge.net

Blender -- a 3D graphics video creation program which hosts a variety of features. These include modeling, animation, rendering, post-production and real-time interactive 3D, as well as game creation.
http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/

Zwei-Stein -- a great free video editing software, but the user interface is very technical. It is full featured, offering many different effects. There are up to 64 effects, which can be chained serially.
http://www.thugsatbay.com/tab/?q=zweistein

Wax -- a high performance and flexible free video editing software program, good for both home users and professionals. It can create 2D & 3D special effects and can work in two modes - as a standalone application which would appeal for home users/beginners, and as a "plug-in" to video editors/NLEs which would be more useful for professional editors.
http://www.debugmode.com/wax

VSDC Free Video Editor -- It's the only free advanced video editor with chroma key editing, and even split screen editing. With a full support for dozens of video codecs and formats including but not limiting to AVI, MP4, MKV, MPG, WMV, 3GP, FLV for video; MP3, WAV, WMA, FLAC, PCM, OGG, AAC, M4A, AMR for audio; and BMP, JPG, PNG, PSD, ICO, TIFF for images, VSDC Free Video Editor provides one of the easiest ways to combine multiple source chunks in different formats into a resulting high-quality video.

Are you familiar with those green compositing stuff that you hear in the movie editing world? This software can do that. Here's a sample of what it can do:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=luyOn5DdUZs

http://www.videosoftdev.com/free-video-editor

Note that this software is free but comes with a stupid 'Conduit Toolbar' it is trying to promote. It gets installed on your browser. You can easily remove that toolbar by going to Control Panel ⺠Uninstall a Program. select 'Conduit Toolbar' from the list of currently installed programs, and uninstall. Next, if you are using Mozilla Firefox, click the Firefox menu ⺠Add-Ons ⺠Extensions tab. Find and click on Conduit Toolbar and select Remove. Restart your browser afterwards.

Do you know any video editing software and where I can download it?

I love doing covers for songs, but they would sound so much better if I had a better singing voice. I lack power and range, my coordination is spot on and I don't have any nasal problems or anything.. I'm a pretty decent singer. I just want to know if there's a software out there for editing music, specifically recorded singing? Or any tutorials/how-to videos for Audacity, Adobe Audition, or GarageBand for Mac. I currently have a 64 bit Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

P.S. - NO AUTOTUNES PLEASE ^_^

Thanks guys.

Answer
I'm not sure about MAC, I'm a windows user, but since the software makers are pretty good people, you might find a way to get a program called SONAR, on your computer, it has a plugin called V-Vocal, and you can actually set the frequencies, or the voice notes, in fact to the desired pitch, and length, and also, if you want to go really pro on it, search for MELODYNE, it is also a program, for recording voice, and editing it's pitches, for corrections and alteration, and also has a good user interface, easy to use, and user-friendly, and you can also make your voice sound like you're a choir, for real, like copying your voice and pasting it on different notes, whyle also keeping the originals, so you sound like more people all at once, with your own voice, I'm not making commercials or anything, but I work with this software at a studio, and I think it's the best for everyone.

Anybody here think Linux Gentoo is a good OS for a beginner with Linux and should i build my own computer?

Ive grown up with computers since 1992. Ive used Windows 3.0, 95, 98, NT, XP, and i recently switched to Mac os x 10 and leopard.

Which linux os is good? Can it do everything windows can including playing pc games and dos games. How about video editing, burning dvds, cds, blurays and sound editing?

Answer
It is a matter of opinion but I believe Ubuntu is an easier Linux distro to start with. As far as gaming is concerned...Linux is getting better, but still falls a bit short. Video, burning...etc. is as capable or better than Windows in most respects. Any Debian based distro is great as the Debian repositories of softwares are huge...much larger than that of the RPM based repositories.

I love acting and making home videos. But I recently wrote a book and I want to make a "book preview" like a movie preview commercial for it. I want this video to look more professional than my usual ones. I have Windows Live movie maker, personally I liked the windows movie maker 2.5 better. I've heard of Imovie but it's only for Mac, right? I can't get it on my windows 8 hp laptop. What are some other movie makers that for FREE that makes videos look professional. Things I can do like blue screen, and mixing to videos together. I don't have many actors so I will have to do a screen blend to mix two separate videos together. any ideas of a software I can download for free. THanks so much in advance! :)

Answer
May I suggest three very good free video editor programs, Freemake, FileLab, or VSDC? Each is safe, fully functioning, no watermarks, will not ask for money, and are recent releases that are HD capable. Take your pick:
http://ezvideoedit.blogspot.com/2012/10/joining-merging-splitting-cutting-and.html

Of the three, I think you'd like VSDC best. It has blue screen, split screen, you name it:

How long before this camera is considered obsolete?

upwardly_m

My son is a high school senior. Next year he wants to go to community college and live at home (at least that is reasonably affordable) instead of going away to school. He wants to take an expensive major however. Video production. We have been able to save about $5,000 towards his education. We are not wealthy people. The rest will have to come from loans and maybe a grant or scholarship.
We are looking at some "entry level" pro cameras in the $1500-1800 range. That's about 1/3 of our savings for his education.
Models include these:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/518555-REG/Sony_HVRHD1000U_HVR_HD1000U_Digital_High_Definition.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/745707-REG/Sony_HXR_MC2000U_HXR_MC2000U_Shoulder_Mount_AVCHD.html
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/878341-REG/Panasonic_hmc40kit_AG_HMC40_AVCCAM_HD_Camcorder.html
and
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/749467-REG/Canon_4922B002_XA10_HD_Professional_Camcorder.html

My concern is he starts September 2013 so these products may not even be available by then or others will be available. We hope he graduates May 2015. He tells us when he graduates he will maybe find a freelance job or shoot local cable news, build up some experience, maybe after 2 years go for a B.A. at least part time.
Is anything we buy him in 2013 (summer) going to be any use to him as a working professional in 2015 (summer)? So let's say you are a class of 2012 graduate with an AAS in video production. The camera you purchased in the summer of 2010 when you first started, do you still use it professionally? Can you make anything doing freelance news videos, PR videos or local account commercials with this equipment?
We're going to do everything we can to help him. No doubt he will still be living at home in the summer of 2015. By then he's going to have a student loan to pay off. We have a 2005 Hyundai Accent that we are going to give him for college. I hope that thing still runs when it is 10 years old and he isn't making car payments on top of that. The thing has 120,000 miles on it but runs really well. I just fear when he graduates he's going to be in deep debt and have limited employment. I may be wrong. What do you think? Thanks.

Answer
Hi "Upwardly Mobile":

Fellow Contributor "L" covered most of the bases quite well, but the only point he didn't underscore is that MOST good video & film production programs at community colleges HAVE the cameras, lights, mikes, tripods, and other gear that the students will learn on & use.

When I went to a local (but nationally prominent) university with a Broadcast/Film Dept., portable video was still fairly new, but all the film cameras, tripods, & light kits were supplied by the Department for students to "check out" as-needed for class projects.

And most video production students start out with Studio Production techniques (where it's easier for groups to learn 3-point lighting, camera setup & tripod/dolly operation, shot composition, audio techniques & mixing, etc.). No need for portable field gear there.

For field production & Electronic News Gathering, a good college will have a fair number of camcorders for students to use & check out (if needed for outside-of-class projects).

The same is true for Editing Software & computer workstations. Some college programs might be economizing and making students supply their own laptops for this, but all the major software companies offer Academic Editions of their normally-expensive edit suites at discounted prices. And of course, nowadays, apps like iMovie (Mac) and Movie Maker (PC) come "free" as part of the operating system and can accomplish what older (and expensive) software used to do, as far as basic editing.

As "L" mentioned, do a bit of "homework" yourself by contacting the community college's department head & instructors for your son's chosen major. Tour the facilities (studio and edit suites) and ask about the "equipment room" for student project gear. See what textbooks (a major expense) are required, and whether computer/laptop & software expense will be part of what's expected of your son. Only if there's little-or-no camcorder gear (or no hands-on studio cameras) would I recommend buying anything like the models from B+H that you listed.

Almost every cable TV & freelance video job I've had over the past 30 years has "supplied" (rented or company-owned) the cameras & grip gear I needed. I bring my own gear only when it's a "favor" or when what I have is better-suited to the task, or they want a "director with gear". My point being, your son doesn't need to own =any= camera gear to make a living freelancing. A good camera operator can stay busy in almost any part of the country, with just his/her skills. (Same for sound mixers & boom/wireless mike operators.)

hope this helps, and hope it saves you some money,
--Dennis C.

It's simple drag and drop technology, so perfect for beginners to experiment and have fun creating music, video and photo slideshow mixes without a steep learning curve. However, there are advanced features such as beat-matching etc., so you can find a level to suit your capabilities. You can cut samples, remix tracks, change tempos, create slideshows, create & edit videos, record in directly from your mic etc. Check out the site for a full range of reviews.

I've got a vinyl cutter and the software for it requires 32-bit versions of Windows (Vista or prior). But the PC that I want to install it on now has also been used for some photo-editing and some video editing/rendering/encoding with Vegas PRO 64-bit.

I'd like to partition my drive and have both versions of the OS on my PC. Is this possible? And can provide instructions or link me to some.

Answer
Yes 64-bit is backward compatible so it will run any 32-bit program.
There is therefore just no reason to do it but if you really want you can partition your hard drive in 2 parts and install 32-bit in one partition and 64-bit in another.
Again I can not see any reason for that but if you really want you can do it.

What are some linux video editing softwares?

How do I get a TV card for Nero?

video editing software nero 9
on nueva version de nero uno de los grabadores mas populares con nero no ...
video editing software nero 9 image

yodav1023

I just bought Nero 7 and read about watching live T.V. It mentions A TV card but doesn't say anything else. Any advice will help.

Answer
Nero is primarily an application for burning cds and dvds; there's a utility in Nero SmartStart that involves tv, but it's not really necessary (mostly just an add-on to make Nero seem even more complete a suite of applications than it already is).

Thing is, if you purchase a tv tuner (new), it's going to come with software optimized for the tuner, software for watching, recording and editing captured content; if the software (they will likely be a bundle of apps) doesn't feature dvd burning (and if that option appeals to you), that's where you can step in with Nero.

One thing for sure Nero is not going to allow that a tv tuner card such as WinTV is multiple channel preview: up to 9 channels can be previewed *simultaneously*, which might save you a lot of flipping. Also, I'm not certain Nero's tv component will allow fullscreen viewing (unless it's using Nero Showtime as a player/playback engine).

What you need to install a tv tuner card on your computer is at least a pentium 3 computer, an available pci or agp slot, sufficient video memory (I'd recommend at least 64mb) and overall system memory (at least 256mb ram) and several gigs of free hardrive space if you're interested in recording content and/or encoding to dvd/vcd (of course, higher system specs are [always] better). I might also suggest that if you do purchase and install this card, you should search the tuner card manufacturer's website for any updated device drivers to ensure maximum performance/compatibility with your Windows OS (I know you have Windows computer because there's no version of Nero available for a Mac).

Oh.. I might be skipping over something I should have mentioned much earlier: this tv card will require at least an antennae and/or some sort of cable/satellite connection to receive and convert the same kind of signals a normal tv receives. So even if you are watching it "on your computer", it's not gonna give you much that a regular tv and vcr/dvd recorder won't.

If instead you were thinking of watching 'live tv' with your computer and *bypassing* any antennae, cable or satellite, then you're really talking about *streaming content available online*. There's hundreds of such channels available but (most of) the content is not identical to what airs on tv. Just for fun or whatever, you might consider checking out http://www.wwitv.com/ , http://www.live-online-tv.com/ or specialized content such as iFilm.com, Youtube, btheretv.com...well, I don't know where your interests lie.

I also don't know when I've wrote too much; I'll decide it's here.

what program do you need for your computer to make home dvds?

I LOVE Mic

or what else do you need to make dvds?

Answer
Go ahead with the process mentioned you must have NERo installed on your PC

Step 1 If you haven't already, label all of the videos and cases for your home videos. Label the video with the subject matter and/or approximate dates. On the case insert be more specific and include start times for each new section.

Step 2 If you have a lot of videos to label, enlist the help of someone else who can fast forward and pause the videos while you write. Do not slow down the playback to watch your clips at this time. Save that for the finished DVD.

Step 3 Plan your video. Is this for one person specifically, with only clips of them? Is it for family viewing of all Christmases/Birthdays past? Whatever the theme, now is the time to decide how you will divide the video. Your software should allow you to burn a DVD with a title menu that can be broken down into one section or many.

Step 4 Use your cables and video equipment to import only the best related clips into your computer. Video files can be very large, so keeping the imports to a minimum will keep your computer moving more efficiently as well.

Step 5 Organize the clips as you are saving them into files on your computer. The best way is to use your plan for the DVD and make folders to correspond to your menu sections. Title your saved-files so that you can quickly recognize the clip later without having to review it.

Step 6 If you are going to use music clips with your home video, make your decisions quickly. A music library that is too large can easily gobble up a lot of time trying to find the "perfect" choice. Import the selected songs into your software and then leave them alone.

Step 7 Assuming you are familiar with your video editing software, so now it's time to put everything together.

Step 8 Drag your clips in order into the timeline. Do not add any extras until this is finished.

Step 9 Next, place any text slides and adjust their times.

Step 10 Add transitions. Avoid the fancy ones. Use basic fadeouts and slides and time them all the same. The transitions are not the focus of the video.

Step 11 Finally add your music selection. If it is shorter or longer than the video, decide whether to fade it out at the end, repeat it for extra length, or to adjust a few clips to make the video fit the music.

Step 12 Save your work frequently during production. Save again at the end.

Step 13 Repeat steps 8-12 for all DVD sections.

Step 14 Burn your finished product to DVD.

What is the best video editing software to use?

video editing software with video overlay image

Jasmine

I do beauty videos on youtube and I need to know the best free video editing software that I can use. Something that is easy, but will make my videos look great (: Something that allows inserting images, subtitles, music, and allows me to delete unneeded clips. Please help??

(I've already tried windows movie maker and video pad editor)

Answer
I think FileLab would be best based on your description. Music and images can be inserted as overlays . You can resize the images and move them by right clicking on them in the timeline and selecting "Edit Overlay". FileLab has great title editor for your subtitles. And as FileLab is an editor program, you can easily delete unneeded clips. FileLab is presented as the second tutorial video in the following article:
http://ezvideoedit.blogspot.com/2012/10/joining-merging-splitting-cutting-and.html

and here are a few more tutorial videos on using FileLab. The first one shows you how to use the overlay function for your added images, music, or even overlayed video as shown:

What is a great, free video editing software?

Damion E

I need a video software I can use that is free, yet amazing. Almost like a pro video editing software. Something with good effects, and so on. I already have Windows Live Movie Maker, so I am looking for something better than that, once again, for free. Please help. Thank you. :)

Answer
Here are the best of the free video editing programs i have found, and a short little review about each one that i have compiled:
(as with free software there are usually limits, as far as video editors go, free editors usually have lack for file type support, or limited effects)

-Videopad http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/index.html (video editing, limited to avi/wmv/asf and DVD. Unlimited audio tracks, text/picture overlay layer, add subtitles easily, 3D support. Not many effects/transitions, but able to import virtualdub effects to be used. Easy to use interface)
-Videospin http://videospin.com/Redesign/ (video editing, limited to avi/mpg-1/wmv, 2 extra audio tracks, text/picture overlay layer, title/credits, easy to use interface. No extra effects.)
-Lightworks http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ (video editing, requires matrox VFM codec + quicktime installed, requires 3gb+ of ram. Lots of video effects. Support for all formats. 3D support. Harder to use interface)
-TrakAxPC http://www.trakax.com/software/pc/download/ (video editing, limited to avi/wmv and mp3/wma/wav/oog/flac formats, Lots of effects. Clunky interface)

-Wax http://www.debugmode.com/wax/download.htm (2d/3d video effects, only works with .avi files, harder to use interface)
wax is kind of like a vary limited stripped down version of after effects. But its the only effects comp software that is free so, no choice really.

Video converter, so you can convert videos so they can be used with above software (remember when converting video, you are compressing it, and when you compress it you will lose quality you can not get back. If you leave all the parameters of the video the same as source, the quality loss is usually barely noticeable. Also remember just like audio, you can NOT increase quality.)
-Freemake video converter http://freemake.com (convert to many types of videos, very easy to use)

And lastly audio editor for editing audio or music in your videos:
-Audacity http://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/ (you will need to get the lame mp3 encoder and ffmpeg addons from the download page. Also id suggest getting extra plugins aswell)

Why do my videos save as pictures and not as videos on my computer?

Curiosity

I have a Jazz HDV189 camera and whenever I make a video on it, it doesn't save as a video when I go to upload it to my computer (a Toshiba laptop). It always saves as a picture, and so when I go to edit it on Windows Movie Maker (and it doesn't work with Windows Live Movie Maker either), it doesn't recognize it as a video file. Is there something that I can change in the settings so that my videos save as video files? Thanks so much in advance!

I also tried putting the memory card directly in the laptop and it still saves as a picture.

Answer
Hi Ms."Curiosity":

First, your Jazz camcorder saves videos (at least the HD ones) in MPEG AVC/H.264 file format (probably with an .MP4 file extension) that most Movie Maker versions don't support (they won't "see" them as videos).

The quickest and cheapest solution is to download Real Network's RealPlayer software which includes the free RealPlayer Converter (and RealPlayer Trimmer), which can directly handle your videos and transcode (convert) them to WMV format, which Windows Movie Maker can edit. (And you can use RealPlayer itself just to view your video files without transcoding.)

Here's the link for Real Network's download page: http://www.real.com/download

There was also a software CD that came with your Jazz camcorder that probably has some simple Media Import & Editing software to help with proper file transfer to your PC. You might dig up that CD and install the software on your computer.

And if your Toshiba is running either Windows Vista, Win7 or Win8, then you either have or can download from Microsoft the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, which can directly handle H.264 (MP4) video files. It's part of the new "Windows Essentials" free download at Microsoft.com.

Hope this helps,

Custom built AlienWare laptop over a MacBook Pro for productivity?

Cesar_17_

So what's best for video editing? AlienWare M14x Custom with 12GB Ram, and a i-7 3rd gen dual cpu at 3.7GHZ with turbo boost 2.0, bluray, etc. or that $1500 macbook pro 13 inch high end 2012? Both will run for around $1800 at the end, bu ti need something decent and good for video editing. It needs to last my last 2 years of high school and my next 3-4 years of college as i plan to major on Video Editing.

Answer
macs are always good for editing due to their os, yet their software isnt always the most up to date, and 13" is a small screen to be editing on. I would go with the alienware, being that it has the 3rd gen cpu which has a gpu enhancer built into it, and plenty of RAM. I would go the alien way simply because with apply you are really paying for the brand and not the components. I currently have a lenovo y580 which has the 3rd gen CPU and 8gb of Ram and it will run literrly anything I throw at it. With Video editing you want to look for the GPU and the CPU. Being that it is alienware you will have both of thoes. I sound bias agains apple but that is just my honest opinion. If you have any other questions be sure to message me.

How do you make a 1st person shooter on the pc?

alex r

im trying to figure how to because me and my freind have this great idea for a video game on the pc. Any ideas on software or anything plz help.

Answer
It's not so easy to do, but if you're willing to put in the time and effort, what you will need is an engine and some development tools, to make models, textures etc.

If you want to spend money you can get a 1st-class game engine and devkit from Garage Games, it's called Torque. The commercial version is used to develop a lot of games sold today. The version for individuals is $100.

If you aren't planning on designing the next Quake though, you could try some of the better open-source or gpl engines. Crystal Space is one, irrlamb is another. Google the names to find them.

The easiest to use though, and the easiest to learn, is the Cube engine. The latest fully developed version is called Sauerbraten, also called Cube 2. With it you can design multiplayer maps including in capture (zones, or bases) mode, and you can make singleplayer levels as well. There are tons of built-in textures and models, and you can make your own too. You can set triggers to open doors, make animated pools of water, put different weapons and armor here and there, put in an end-of-level objective, all kinds of things. It actually is being used by a development company to make a commercial game too.
Besides that, it is a game in its own right, plenty of maps there already and online multiplayer too. You can stop the game any time, go into edit mode, and edit the terrain. (it's considered cheating in actual games though.)

You can find Sauerbraten here:

I need a 1080p laptop for full hd video editing. My teacher said I would need 8gb ram for hd video rendering, do I need this or is a 4gb or 6gb fine? What are the ups for getting an 8gb?

Answer
yes, you will need at least 8GB if you want to do uncompressed HD editing without lag. i have 4GB on my MacBook Pro 15" and i can run Final Cut Pro 7 no problems with compressed HD.

4 or 6GB should be fine if its compressed.

Best Video Editing Software and Laptop For It?

gdn35

I am willing to spend anything up to £2,000 - but i'd rather it was around £1,500.

I want to purchase a very good laptop that can handle video editing and HD format well. I also want to purcahse the best editing software available.

Would it be better to buy an Apple Mac laptop with Final Cut Pro or a normal laptop with Adobe Premiere?

Thanks!

Answer
Hummm...

Final Cut...you already sound aware of good things.
I hope that was compatible to PCs, then your choice scoop would have been widen.

iMac or Mac Pro with high spec is gonna do you more good than harm.

The best regrets are those caused by you...and not those caused you by others.

best mac laptop for video editing 2011 image

Sophia

I have a white mac laptop from 2011, and I'm looking for a good HD video camera that will work for it. I found this one, (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HDR-CX190-Definition-Handycam-Camcorder/dp/B006K551HQ) but I'm still not sure if it's going to be compatible, especially since I have an old computer, a laptop, no less. Thanks.
By the way, I want to be able to edit my videos in iMovie and then be able to upload them to YouTube with perhaps 720p-1080p there. Will this camera work for that?

Answer
You should be OK. The CX190 captures AVCHD video that your version of iMovie can deal with. The bigger issue is whether you have enough hard drive space on the computer. You never want to get below about 20% available space. If your Mac's internal drive is 500 gig, then you really should keep the available space in the 100 gig range. I know it sounds like a lot, but it is all about system stability and the way the hard drive is used for virtual memory when there is not enough physical RAM. And editing high definition video is a resource hog. Using an external drove connected using USB would be a HUGE help.

Where should I buy my computer?

I have 1000 to buy a laptop for college. I'm a English major so I don't need too much fancy stuff. I do take a lot of pictures and put them on my computer, if that means anything. I also need wifi. I'm not sure if I should get a pc or a mac, a mac would be more expensive, I understand, but I don't know if its worth it. Thank you for your help.

Answer
A mac wouldn't really be worth the extra money, based on your needs. I would suggest looking at either an ASUS or Toshiba laptop or a Lenovo Thinkpad. They all have very good build quality. Toshibas and Thinkpads are very durable while ASUS laptops have some of the highest quality hardware available.
For good prices on computers, you may want to check out Newegg.com and Tigerdirect.com

@Skylar Oh wow. Well, fanboys will be fanboys, I guess. Where to start?
Well, Macbooks do come with some simple photo and video editing software, but then, so do some Windows computers. And there are free programs for those that don't have this software. Both offer more advanced programs, but they're around ~$200 on both platforms(Final Cut Pro, Aperture, etc on Macs).
Microsoft Office Home and Student does not cost anywhere NEAR $400. You're just making stuff up, there. It costs $150 if you buy from Microsoft, and you can find it cheaper on Newegg and Tigerdirect.
PCs don't NEED virus protection, all you need is Common Sense 2011. Virus protection just means you have to be less cautious. And there are TONS of free antivirus out there. Most notably MSE and MalwareBytes free version.
I don't know where you got that "...the last time a Mac had one that wasnt installed purposly was 2006" thing from, but I know people who have had viruses on Macs. It's possible to get viruses on Macs, it's just unusual because there aren't many coded for the OS.
Many laptops come with warranties. Not sure what you're talking about there. Why are you calling Microsoft for a warranty?
Yeah, Windows PCs come with a "website builder", too. It's called a text editor. Of course, most people don't use those. They don't use Adobe Dreamweaver or whatever is on the Mac, either though. They make IDEs for these things.
"Microsoft says you need to get a new computer every 18 months to not lag." Oh wow, I have no idea where you pulled that one from, but that isn't true in the slightest. I've seen plenty of Windows machines last MUCH longer than that. In fact, I have one in my living room from '04. Still works fine.
"Add that up also. And for netbooks the life spam is 6 months". Again, no. Are you just making up numbers or something?
"Macs are used in so many schools, and by so many in college, and so many teachers for a reason." Well, yeah. They're fairly reliable and there aren't very many viruses on them. Guess what else a lot of schools use? Workstation desktops and Lenovo Thinkpads. Those run Windows.
"and they are so dependable." Yes, they are pretty dependble. Less so than ASUS, Toshiba, and the higher quality Thinkpads (X and T series, mainly), but Macs are definitely up there.
Oh, and you can't upgrade the hardware in a Mac. Personally, I view that as a problem. That's just me, though.

What is the best video editing software for Windows Vista?

Adobe Premier Elements
Sony Vegas
Avid

I want one that can make really great AMVs with cool special effects.

Answer
Of the three you have listed here, Sony Vegas platinum edition would best suit your needs. Adobe Premiere is a good second choice. Personally I find Avid too hard to use and extremely overpriced for what you get.

In my opinion Sony Vegas has the most special effect options, in the lowest price bracket. It is simple to use and very powerful. It also has the best audio editing capabilities of the three programs you have listed here. I use Vegas Pro 8 daily, as well as Final Cut. Between the two, I prefer Vegas for most tasks.

If you are going to be working with a lot of still images, Premiere Elements bundled with Photoshop elements is a very good choice.

Tony Noon
This is my opinion as of 9/9/08. Video equipment changes literally daily and yesterdays top of the line is todays obsolete junk.

I'd like to custom build a Mac Pro for video editing in Final Cut Pro. Super fast, super powerful is what I'm aiming for. I'm open to any ideas, cost is not a problem. Would it be advisable to start with a pre-built Mac Pro, or should I buy all of the parts separately and assemble the computer myself? Thanks in advance for any advice regarding best processors, cards, etc.

Answer
You cant build a mac pro, theres no way to install the parts, motherboard is carved out and such. Order a 12 core Mac Pro with 4x 2TB hard drives.
Get at least 16GB of RAM, more if you like
Go dual video cards in SLI mode.

This will cost thousands but its a pretty beefed up machine, more powerful than ANY PC on the market. There are no PCs with 12 full processing cores.

EDIT: To the guy below me, There arent any 6 core i7 units, there are hyperthreaded units but thats not the same thing. the Mac Pros have 12 full cores. And no you cant just use any motherboard in a Mac Pro. It wont fit.

How can I import videos from the videos app to the iMovie app?

Andy

So here it is: I made an intro on iMovie on my Dad's iMac, then I transferred the project to iTunes and synced it to my iPod, and now it's in the videos app. Can you guys tell me how to import that intro to the iMovie app so I can edit it to my video?
Thanks

Answer
You can't, unless you get a program online for that job.
It would be easier to drag and drop the file onto a memory stick, then put the file on your laptop.
Easy peasy.

What video editing software that can edit backgrounds?

i_am_dira

I want to edit my plain video background with a picture, for example, the world map.
What video editing software on PC that is able to do this?
PLEASE HELP!!

Answer
Do you mean changing the background behind you? That requires the use of a green screen and chroma keying. Even Windows Movie Maker can chroma key with plug ins. Look it up on youtube.

Question about Windows 7 and Windows Live Movie Maker?

best dell laptop for video editing 2011 image

caseyw1286

Okay, so I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 Laptop that is about 6-7 years old. I'm not sure what exactly the video card is but it is very basic. My laptop has been running Windows Vista ever since I had it. Today, I decided to upgrade to Windows 7. Two days ago (when I still had Vista), I made a slide show using Windows Live Movie Maker. When I updated to 7, I downloaded and tried to open up Live Movie Maker but it said I didn't meet the requirements. I was able to open it up in Vista so I can't understand why it wouldn't open up in 7 since my laptop is the same. Does Windows 7 have different requirements?

Answer
caseyw1286,

Check out the system requirements to install and run the Windows Live Movie Maker.

What are the Movie Maker system requirements?Movie Maker has the following system requirements:

â¢Operating system:

â¢Movie Maker 2011: Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (32-bit or 64-bit versions) or Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit versions)

â¢Movie Maker 2012: Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit versions)

To burn a movie directly to a DVD using Movie Maker, Windows DVD Maker must be installed on your computer. Windows DVD Maker is included in the following operating systems:

Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Ultimate, Windows 7 Home Premium, Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 7 Ultimate

To record video from a webcam, Movie Maker must be running on Windows 7.

The types of video and audio files you can use in Movie Maker depend on which version and edition of Windows that your computer is running. For more information, see What kind of files can I use in Movie Maker?

â¢Memory: 1 GB of RAM (2 GB of RAM or higher is recommended when editing HD (high-definition) video)

â¢Processor: 2.4 GHz (single processor) or higher (a dual-core processor or higher is recommended when editing HD video)

â¢Internet browser: Internet Explorer 7 (or later), Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 (or later), or Safari 3.1 (or later)

â¢Internet connection: Internet functionality requires dialâup or broadband Internet access (provided separately). Local or longâdistance charges might apply.

â¢Graphics or video card:

Video card or video driver that supports Microsoft DirectX 9.0c (or later) and Pixel Shader 2.0 (or later). For DirectX 9 hardware on Windows 7, go to Windows Update.

To determine the DirectX version that your video card supports, use the Microsoft DirectX Diagnostic Tool. To open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, click the Start button , type dxdiag in the search box, and then, in the list of results, click dxdiag.exe. Click the Display tab, and then look at the value for DDI Version.
â¢Additional required programs: Photo Gallery and Windows Media Player

Notes
â¢To install or uninstall Movie Maker, you must use an administrator account on the computer.

â¢In some cases, the DirectX Diagnostic Tool might not report the Device Driver Interface (DDI) version correctly. For more information, see the article about the DDI version appearing as 9Ex on the Microsoft Support website.
