Which Desktop Replacement Laptop Do You Recommend?

fun_to_tra

I'm looking to get a windows 7 laptop. I currently have a 2011 MBP 15" 2.2 i7 with 8GB Ram & 80GB SSD.

I've been needing to use windows more and more (for heavy tasks, not good for virtual machines), and have a cheapo laptop that I use, but now I want to maybe make windows my primary laptop and want a really good one.

What I want to use it for: Multiple and massive excel spreadsheets open at once, copying and pasting tens of thousands of rows between them, two browsers open with multiple tabs each, FTP program and editing html, general web browsing and a lot of multitasking etc.

Requirements:

Atleast 8GB ram (I can add myself), and prefer upgradable to 12 or 16.
15"-17" screen
Great keyboard and trackpad
Great Screen
i7 processor
Blu ray drive, or one that I could swap out for a BD drive
SSD, hybrid or one I could swap out
HDMI out
Nice looking

I don't play games but I do watch videos on the laptop via youtube/hulu, netlfix etc when traveling.

Budget $2000.

Recommendations?

Thanks!

Answer
Best ones you will be able to get,

Either SAGER or FALCON NORTHWEST. (someone may say alienware, but no thats dell & they are bad ever since takeover)

xoticpc has the best selection, itll run you around 1400~1600 for a fully loaded top-of-the-line SAGER (German build quality = amazing) or an American company, Falcon Northwest operates off their own site.

Is this alienware worth $1651?

Answer
well cpu is good and theres plenty of RAM and HDD space + SSD.
BUT. that video card isnt the top of the mountain, its good for low-med settings in 2011 games but dont try to run anything on high.

Oh yeah forgot almost: IMO Alienware is overpriced(i have experience with 2 alienware laptops, both died in 3-5months after i bought them got my money back of course)

What are some good programs to install on a laptop with Ubuntu Linux ?

Answer
VLC is the cross-platform Swiss Army knife of media players. It's lightweight, open source, and can play virtually any fileâaudio or videoâthat you throw at it. If you're really into VLC, you can even use it rip DVDs, fix out-of-sync audio and video, and play your ripped DVDs. VLC has no media library tools, but you can create and save playlists. Either way, the slim, no-nonsense player has found a home on countless Windows, Mac, and Linux installs.

Stellarium is a free and open source planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. It boasts of a star catalogue with over 600,000 stars.

GnuCash provides accounting functions suitable for use by small businesses and individuals. It can track finances in multiple accounts, keeping running and reconciled balances. There is support for customer, vendor and employee processing.

As you should know, Ubuntu Software Center completely replaced Synaptic during the last release cycle. But even with all its improvements, Ubuntu Software Center is not anywhere near as slick or functional as Synaptic yet. So you might want to install and use Synaptic until Software Center is more 'complete'. Expected changes for upcoming Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin release include many improvements and feature additions for Ubuntu Software Center, so that we can expect a more solid release next time around.

Shutter is perhaps the most comprehensive tool for easy capturing, editing and sharing of screenshots. Really must have app for bloggers, have been using Shutter like forever.

Mumble is a voice over IP application primarily designed for use by gamers, similar to programs such as TeamSpeak and Ventrilo. Many reviewers have rated Mumble above both TeamSpeak and Ventrilo apparently. Mumble features noise suppression, automatic gain control and low latency audio with support for multiple audio standards.

Uget is a simple, lightweight and easy-to-use download manager. It is fast, responsive and does what it is supposed to do rather well.

GIMP needs no introduction. It is simply the best image editor application for Linux. Until a few releases back, GIMP was among the default choice of applications for vanilla Ubuntu. It has now been replaced with more light weight applications.

RawTherapee is used to adjust some of the most often changed parameters when optimizing digital images. It was one of the first raw converters available for Linux with a reasonably usable GUI. A good application to try out for hardcore photographers.

Darktable is a good alternative to Adobe's Lightroom application. It enables you to develop raw images and enhance them. All editing with Darktable is fully non-destructive and only operates on cached image buffers for display. The full image is only converted during export.

Inkscape is a free and open source, cross platform, vector graphics editor with capabilities similar to Illustrator and CorelDraw, using SVG file format.

OpenShot Video Editor is a free and open-source non-linear video editor. It can create and edit videos and movies using many popular video, audio, and image formats. Though user reviews have generally been positive, many hard core users still prefer KDenLive.

Good and cheap home video editing software?

MFB

I need to buy a simple and cheap home movie editing program to edit the little films I take with my digital camera and format them for DVD. Does anyone have suggestions?

Answer
Video editing software that adds music and narrations. These programs can link together short video clips. One warning: Video editing demands a lot of computer resourcesâeach hour of video requires 13 gigabytes of hard drive space. You will need at least 512 megabytes of RAM. Anything less will slow down your computer considerably.

1. Windows Movie Maker. If you have Windows XP, you should have Windows Movie Maker 2 (Windows XP only). Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Windows Movie Maker. If you donât find it, you can download it from Microsoft's Web site (www.microsoft.com). Microsoftâs Web site offers a number of tutorials.

You can assemble clips using the storyboard view. This allows you to drag and drop clips into little boxes at the bottom of your screen (you can change the order of these boxes, too). When you find the order you like, you can add over 50 transitions (fades, dissolves, wipes, etc.) that will link your clips together.

Video effects will slow down, speed up or blur your video. Thereâs even an effect that can turn portions of your video into a watercolor painting.

The timeline view allows you to add music, titles or narration.

2. Avid Free DV (www.avid.com/freedv, Windows XP; Mac OS X 10.4.2 or later) offers a fraction of Avidâs other (and costly) video-editing programs. But it does have some of the features of the full version of Avid.

There are over a dozen free video tutorials on Avidâs Web site.

Avid Free DV allows you to trim video, edit audio and create titles. Its timeline utilizes two video and two audio tracks and 16 video effects.

3. VirtualDub (www.virtualdub.org; Windows 95 and later)is a very fast, full-featured program.

The video-editing capabilities are limited, but it allows you to trim video and adjust audio. VirtualDub is known for its filters: adjust the brightness; sharpen the picture; blur clips together; rotate pictures; etc. Then you can view the before effects and after effects in the two windowsâhere you can cancel the filter effects.

For the more advanced there is:
Adobe www.adobe.com
Pinnacle www.pinnaclesys.com
Ulead www.ulead.com
Cost: less than $100.

Answer
Photobucket is a great web based and FREE editing tools. The software behind it comes from Adobe who make some of the best commercial ($$$) photo and video editors. If you need/want more features downloading VideoSpin or VideoThang are great options. Still free, but you have to download the software. For under $100 you can buy Adobe Premiere Elements.

Movie trembles when I reverse it in video editing software?

raigafan18

I use Final Cut Express to edit and put movies together. However, I have encountered a problem. When I reverse some videos, the picture trembles and shakes around. This does not happen when I play the videos normally, since they do not tremble or anything when I view them before use. How do I correct this, or what could be causing it?

Answer
The top-ranked video edting software for PC:Ulead Video Studio, Adobe Premiere Elements and SonyVegas.
Based on personal experiences,I have had good success with DVD Slideshow Builder, which supports all popular Standard-definition and high-definition videos.
Built-in video edting tools, like crop, rotateVideo effects like Brightness contrast, Blur, Carve , Embossment, Flash,Red Green Blue,Levels,Ribbon,Old Photo, etc.
http://www.ourpix.com/dvd-slide-show.html#150
For Mac, there's a compromise program available for the Mac, that's Final Cut Express. It's sort of the consumer version of Final Cut Pro/Studio, which is intended for professionals in the video editing field. It's also very expensive.

What is the best video camera and editing software to use to make movies?

Mike DeMor

I have been working on a movie, but I want to know what a really good camera would be to film it. My friend has a Sony dcr-sr47 and I haven't used it so I don't know how well it is with video quality and audio. I was also looking into buying a Canon FS300, so I would like to know which is better, or if there is a camera better for under $500. I am also looking into editing software for my movies. From what I hear, Vegas Movie Studio 9 is pretty good, but I'm unsure.

Answer
Any good digital camera will work. I have GE 8.0 megapixel E850 that works wonders. I also got a Sony Handicam DCR SX-40 that works great too. I have a mini adjustable tripod and a regular tripod that goes up to 50" which is great for my Handicam. A camera with a zoom lense like my GE(won it off of eBay for around $50 with s/h.), will work wonders. My GE came with a video editing software, Arcsoft with Photo and Video Impressions. I can't think of the program my Handicam came with. I have Windows Movie Maker too. If you're willing to go an extra mile since you want to invest in a Canon, you may want to try a video editing program like Pinnacle Studio. You can do all kind of things with this program. Try a trial version and see if it's something you would like to spend money on.

Which is the best video editing software for windows 7?

Yussiiii

I need a software for editing video clips or creating video clips with pictures and songs.
It will also be better if it has the ability to sync the video with the audio I put.

I used to do this in windows movie maker in xp, but the audio wont always sync with the video, sometimes the audio comes 5 seconds away from the video.
I hope you guys understood what I asked.

If not, then here is an example,
my friends dance to a song and I record them through my mobile,
so I would put that video in the editor and add real mp3 or m4a or wav songs and sync it with the video.
More like making a music video.

It will be nice if I can edit the clips or audios too.

Answer
If you were using Windows Movie Maker, I'm guessing you want a free video editing program. Try Serif MoviePlus Starter Edition.

If you are prepared to spend a small fortune, Adobe Premiere is probably the best.

VIDEO EDITING SOFTWARE?

Mary

Hello-
I have become interested in making YouTube videos.
I have a HP windows 8 computer and I use a Canon Rebel T3I to record my videos.
Can anyone help me find a good inexpensive video editing software? For things such as cropping certain video parts, adding effects like background music, etc.
All free editors I've tried have not been very helpful to me.

Thanks!!!

Answer
Windows Movie Maker? No editing software is all easy to use and perfect, especially if it's free. But Movie Maker is and I find it great. Just get used to it a bit. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker#t1=overview

Zombro, man I am confused. What show? Ugh

Which video camera and editing software?

Lacey

I was wondering what type of video camera I should get. I am hoping to start a beauty channel on YouTube and I want really good videos. I want high definition too! Price doesn't really matter. I also want a really good editing software. I have an hp. I know the original one is Windows Movie Maker, but there is anything newer/better? Thanks in advance!

Answer
If price is no limit get yourself an awesome Nikon SLR with video recording capability.
Then you can switch lenses and do all sorts of stuff. IT will beat any point and shoot camcorder any day.

As for software nothing beats Adobe Premier. If your a student or teacher you can get the educational edition for 20$ a month, which includes all the adobe products which you may also want to use.
Like Photoshop, Flash and illustrator.. etc.. All good things that you can do artwork in and import to premier.

Free Video Editing Program for Sony Vaio Laptop?

Okay, so i have a lot of Christmas videos i took from my laptop and i want to edit them together and put music into it. Can someone tell me a good place to get a FREE video editing program? And maybe even a NON-downloadable program. And i don't want it to take up a lot of memory.

Answer
good Video editing software is not available for free. however, you could use Windows Movie Maker to edit the videos. in case u r using Vista OS, then you can download Windows movie maker from Microsoft web site.

from memory, if you mean the size of the video file, then this depends up on the file format in which you wish to save the final video output. you can save the file in AVI, MPEG 2, MPEG 4 etc formats. the size of each file format is different. while creating the video, the software will give you these details as well. according, you may decide which format to use.

I use Sony Vegas Pro, Cinema 4D, & Adobe After Effects, but my laptop(Sony Vaio) lags & is really slow when I'm editing. What are the fastest laptops for video editing? Ones that won't lag AT ALL. List some for me? I don't want a Macbook, so don't list that, thanks.

Answer
The fastest laptop for video editing is the one with the fastest processor. You can only render video as fast as your processor can handle it. RAM or what video card...that doesn't have anything to do with the speed of rendering.

What is the best video editing software for Mac?

Joshua

I've had bad experiences with Final Cut, and iMovie is for amateur video. What is the best professional movie editing software for Macintosh. I want it to be easy to use but let me do more than iMovie. And inexpensive is also a plus. PROFESSIONAL EDITING SOFTWARE

Answer
** @BuBaH, Premiere Pro wasn't used to edit it. The creative editing for AVATAR is done using an AVID based system, Premiere Pro is able to read in cut-lists and other important metadata using its built-in AVID âAAFâ import feature.**

Well the only other PROFESSIONAL and I mean REALLY PRO editing software is Avid Media Composer Nitris DX. Now the retail version, the highest grade version (used for feature films) is around $15,000. But, you can get a lower grade educational version (if your a student) called "Avid Media Composer." This is still really good software. It has a completely different interface and style than final cut pro, which is good since you said you have had bad experiences with FCP. It can do everything FCP can plus more. Go to www.academicsuperstore.com and search "Avid Media Composer" Its like $300. I also suggest buying the 3rd party plugins for the software too. (Around 300).

Avid Media Composer (edu version) is the cheapest PRO software you'll find. Editors working on major motion pictures use this software the most.
*** the edu. version is exactly the same and the commercial version, its just $2000 cheaper than Avid Media Composer

What's a good video editing program for what I want to do (read on)?

vagabond79

I am archiving videos of sports events on my computer from television so there are a lot of commercials to edit out. Thus far I have used Windows Media Maker and that's ok except that when compiling the video with any decent quality it takes FOREVER. Do other programs do this as well? Could you recommend a good program that makes this easier and faster?

Answer
The taking forever part has less to do with the video editor, and more to do with the power of your computer--or, most likely in this case, the lack thereof. What are the specs of the machine you're using?

There are two big undefined variables here: your defining time length for "forever" and the exact parameters of video with "any decent quality."

Earlier this year, I began shooting with an HD camcorder. When I tried editing the high def footage, my laptop with an Intel Centrino Duo processor and 2 GB RAM wasn't anywhere near powerful enough. Now I've got a Dell Studio 435T with 8 GB RAM, Intel i7 processor and 1 GB high def graphics card. Rendering times in Sony Vegas Pro are far quicker--in other words, far short of forever.

If you're considering upgrading your system for better video editing, here's a guide I used when buying my new setup:
http://www.videoguys.com/Guide/E/Videoguys+DIY7+Intel+Core+i7+with+Vista+64/0xe07f65920351fbf3ed8f9892355dfda0.aspx

If you have any other questions, feel free to leave a comment at my blog and I'll get back to you. http://www.werdofbert.com

Brand buying advise

Always avoid refurbished units. They only come with a 90 day warranty and have a higher failure rate. The service contacts are normally just a one time replace contract.

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. Lenovo will not allow people to read instruction on how to access the BIOS menu or to get info on their puters on their web site unless you connect to them thru Facebook. They do this so they can spy on their users. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Chrome books are useless. They are designed by Google to make you dependent on Google. If you can not access the web then you can not do anything.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

How to Choose Video Editing Software?

Da

Answer
Video File Import and Export
The ability to import and export various video formats is the most important factor in the considering list. It should support all the popular video formats and minor updates should be accessed when there is a new format.

Versatility
Examine the versatility of the software by assessing the range of functions itâs able to perform. One of the ways is to look at the amount of options in each area. For example, even the most basic software has special effects you can add to your footage, but some software has far more special effects to choose from. Taking this further some software allows you to download even more, or create your own.

How finely the software can make adjustments is also an important factor. The most basic software allows you to adjust sound volume up and down, but more advanced software offers a broader range of fine adjustments.

Ease of use
I place particular importance on rating how easy each software package is to use. Some software is fantastically feature-rich, but a possible downside of all this power is that the software can be harder to get to grips with.

Based on the consideration of the above factors, I carefully pay particular notice of the experiences on testing several of video-editing software and find a nice cheap one â VideoFlick.

Best PC laptop for video editing?

Music Is M

Hi!

I'm a film student looking to buy a new laptop this week, but I don't want to spend more than $1,200. I want the best possible quality I can get! I know macs are the big thing but on my budget I feel like I can get a faster/better computer in that price range by getting a PC. Also I edit with Avid Media Composer and Adobe premier/suite so if you know a laptop that handles those well... let me know!

Suggestions??

Also are computers that are good for gaming also good for video editing? I was checking out graphics cards and gaming computers seem to have the best ones!

Any opinions on this Toshiba?
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cdetland.to?poid=2000044488

Btw... I'm pretty skeptical about hp laptops because my last two broke and they always overheat!
To clarify, I am not looking for a gaming computer or a mac! Just a computer that will run fast and support intense video editing!

Answer
The Toshiba Qosmio X870 you're looking at isn't a good choice. The problem with that laptop is that it comes with a 17.3" 1600x900 display (as opposed to a 17.3" 1920x1080 display). 1600x900 resolution in a 17.3" display makes things onscreen large, and 17.3" displays that have 1600x900 resolution tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. You should make a point to avoid displays like this (15.6" 1366x768, 17.3" 1600x900, etc.) when it is reasonable to do so, unless you require the larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

This is more of an issue than a lot of other things. For example, an i5-3210M (as opposed to maybe an i7-3630QM) is not a terrible processor, a GTX 660M (as opposed to maybe a GTX 670M) is not a terrible GPU, but a 17.3" 1600x900 display is a terrible display. You need to be concerned with improving a display that's pretty bad before you start focusing on other aspects that are already pretty good in a lot of models.

Also note that things like the 12GB RAM, 3GB video memory, etc. are there purely for marketing purposes. They don't improve your gaming experience. You are not going to notice a difference in gaming by having more than ~8GB, and if you end up needing more in other programs than keep in mind that it's very cheap and easy to add more memory in after-market if you get a computer that has less memory than you need. As for the video memory: A 1.5GB GTX 670M is just as good as the 3GB version. The video memory is not the bottleneck, the GPU chip itself is. You'll see essentially the same performance on a 1.5GB version as you'll see on a version with unlimited memory.

That said, take a look at these models:

Answer
I'm not up on the specs required by the latest Adobe software, but the problem that jumps out to me is the hard drive: It's a 5400rpm unit, you would really want a seperate faster hard drive to act as the video scratch.

The Hard drive in the laptop has to run the system and programmes, if you then add in video data then it's not going to be stable with all those MBs getting chucked around.

You need to get a seperate 7200rpm drive. Lacie do rugged drives with this rotation speed, if you have a firewire port they are also bus powered.

I don't see any reference to the bus speed either, you want 768 or preferably faster. This dictates how quickly the various components can communicate. No point having a fast processor and a fast external drive if the system bus speed is strangling it.

These are why desktops are generally the better option for video editing. Unless you use a mac. Which I do.
