I need video editing software for mac for free. help?

Dj

7 year old powerbook g4. New imoive HD is not an option. help please?

Answer
Here is a list for all free video editing softwares on Mac:

iMovie (Now it has updated iMovie '11 with more powerful function)
iMovie that comes with every new Mac (OS X), now called iMoveHD and it's a part of iLife package. Apple iMovie '05 is an excellent (and free) video editor for the Mac platform, with advanced video editing features and a lot of addon and plug-in support. You can find more information about iMovie at Apple's iLife '05 site. Note that this software is free only if you buy a new Mac. You can purchase it, however, if you just want the software.

Blender
model ⢠shade ⢠animate ⢠render ⢠composite ⢠interactive 3d
Blender is the free open source 3D content creation suite, available for all major operating systems.

Avidemux
Avidemux is a free video editor designed for simple cutting, filtering and encoding tasks. It supports many file types, including AVI, DVD compatible MPEG files, MP4 and ASF, using a variety of codecs. Tasks can be automated using projects, job queue and powerful scripting capabilities.

Jashaka
The worlds first open source, hardware accelerate editing and effects system! Well worth to check it out.
http://www.jahshaka.org/

HyperEngine-AV
Multimedia authoring software for capturing, editing, organizing, processing, and exporting video, audio, and text to create DVD quality movies and slide shows.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=131273

Atomic Learning's FREE Video StoryBoard Pro
http://movies.atomiclearning.com/k12/storyboardpro

ZS4 Video Editor
ZS4 Video Editor is video editing and compositing software which aims to provide media experts with a facility to combine a variety of media types (currently photos, videos and audio files) into one (or more) output file(s).
http://www.zs4.net/free-software-downloads .

Some of them may have special video formats like iMovie only supports parts of standard DV formats, so if your videos can't be accepted by these video editing tools, you'd better get a professional video converter for mac.
Try this Total Video Converter for Mac: http://www.mac-videoconverter.com/video-converter-mac.html
In some aspects, it may help you.

Good luck!

video editing software question<10 points>?

Shivalik

Which is the best video editing software ? In which i can show special effect, subtitles and many more..

Answer
FileLab is a freeware video editing program for just about all platforms (Mac, PC, etc...). I use it a lot to make YouTube videos. It runs in your browser using a simple plug-in download. It has many transition and video effects, very good title editor, and customized color correction to include brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, and gamma. This tutorial on FileLab was made with FileLab
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYbAe-mUscs

VSDC is also freeware, but has much more advanced capabilities than FileLab, such as green screen! It's not as obvious or easy to use as FileLab, but did I already mention it has green screen (chroma key), and it's free? Also, it is capable of editing in most most popular video formats and compression schemes including high definition (HD), AVI, H.264, MP4, MKV, MTS, 3GP, WMV, QT, MP3, MPEG2 FLV, SWF. YouTube. Get it now while it's free because eventually this will go payware.

Free video editing software?

I have windows 8 and i a couple of months ago have started editing videos for magic/ cardistry videos. The problem is, that I have been using windows movie maker, because it is simple. I want something free, but a little more difficult to get used to because of the special effects (which obviously I want to learn to use). I cant find anything good right now, but maybe you guys know of some good ones. And by free i don't mean free trail.

Answer
Video Editing:

Lightworks; free alternative to Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas.
http://lwks.com

Lightworks has been used in the movie industry for more than 20 years. Lightworks also has the fastest workflow in the industry.

Lightworks used to cost more than $1,000, but now Lightworks Pro costs $60/year and you can download a free version from their website.

Sony Vegas costs $600 and that's the same price as using Lightworks Pro for 10 years.

Editors using Lightworks have produced numerous internationally renowned and Oscar and Emmy award-winning feature films and television programs, including The King's Speech, The Departed, Mission Impossible, Braveheart, and Pulp Fiction.

And yes! Lightworks is FREE if you don't need pro video codecs and you can use the free version as long as you want.

Color Grading:

Use color grading to make the video "pop to life", to change the mood, or to make it look more like a movie or TV show.

DaVinci Resolve is the best color grading software in the industry.
http://blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve

You can download a FREE version of DaVinci Resolve from their website.

DaVinci Resolve (Demo)

3D Animation and Visual Effects:

Blender; free alternative to Maya and After Effects.
http://blender.org

Blender has a complete VFX pipeline in one single software package. Blender has tools for modeling, sculpting, rigging, animation, rotoscoping, chroma keying (green screen), motion tracking, smoke, fire, and fluid simulation, particles, destruction, physics, color grading, node compositing, and video editing.

After Effects uses "layer-based" compositing. Blender uses "node-based" compositing similar to Nuke; used in the movie industry http://thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke

Blender has more advanced features but After Effects is easier to use.

The easiest and most detailed tutorial on how to use Blender is Neal Hirsig's tutorial at http://gryllus.net/Blender/3D.html

Blender is 100% free with full functionality, no adware, no spyware, and no viruses, and you're allowed to use Blender in any production without having to pay for anything.

Answer
The top-ranked video edting software for PC:Ulead Video Studio, Adobe Premiere Elements and SonyVegas. These are not for beginners so it'll take a while to learn them. You'll need books and videos to learn it.
Based on personal experiences,I have had good success with DVD Slideshow Builder, which supports all popular Standard-definition and high-definition videos.
Built-in video edting tools, like crop, rotate Video effects like Brightness contrast, Blur, Carve , Embossment, Flash,Red Green Blue,Levels,Ribbon,Old Photo, etc.
http://www.ourpix.com/dvd-slide-show.html#150

For Mac, I will recommend Final Cut Studio
http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro/

is there any free software for video editing and rotating?

mukuntha

video taken turning the camera sidewys to cover height of the scenes. i want the whole video rotated as it is running horizantally

Answer
Video editing software usually increases in price as it's capabilities grow in number. Adobe Premier and Adobe After Effects can both do this, but they are not free. There is also a program called FadeToBlack you could download a demo for. Chances are, this software would be hard to find. Perhaps the Windows Movie Maker software common on PCs should be able to do this. If not, search around www.download.com for the right one. If you REALLY need it done and cannot find a program, then I can do it for you when i've got some time out of my current movie.

Buying my first laptop/netbook?

lkathleen

I'm a huge noob when it comes to laptops, I don't know what I'm doing at allll haha.
so I want to buy a laptop (or maybe a netbook?). I'd be mostly using it for homework, but also for stuff like skyping and facebook, and I definitely need flash.
I'd be doing a lot of word processing on it, and maybe a little video and photo editing. I don't want it to be too heavy so I can take it traveling, but still have a decent amount of memory... any suggestions? tips on buying laptops? I don't want to spend a ton of money though.
thankss :)

Answer
In my opinion, nowadays, 4GB of RAM memory is enough to don't have to worry about the memory issue. I have windows 7 with 4GB of RAM, and though I use to open a lot of programs at the same time, I never had a memory problem with my computer.

A good way to decide which laptop you should buy is by looking at the best selling laptops list, because that tells you what most people are deciding to buy right now.

The most sold PC laptop at this moment, and the one that I will recommend to you, is the Toshiba Satellite L755-S5271. It has a 15.6-Inch LED screen and 4GB of RAM. You can buy it new for $499.99, but if you want something cheaper with these same characteristics, you can buy instead the HP ProBook 4530s XU015UT for $449.99.

Take a look here to see a list of the best selling laptops in Amazon.com:

Good luck!

I want to learn video editing but can't afford professional software. What should I get?

Grammar Na

Adobe Creative Suite with After Effects and Premier Plus costs as much as my first car probably will. Even with a student discount it costs more than my computer.
I've tried Wax, Jashaka, T@B ZweiStein, and other freeware alternatives, but they're terribly buggy and unstable.
Is there any other semi-professional level software that I could get without having to drop out of college to pay for? Thanks for any suggestions.
And no, I'm not going to steal a pirated copy. Stealing something that expensive is a Class C felony in Washington state for heaven's sake!

Answer
You can get After Effects and other Adobe software for a very low monthly subscription fee (about $20 per month for students).

I'd like to recommend HD video editor to you, I always use it to edit video and make funny video for uploading to Youtube, it's easy to use and the quality is awesome, you can crop, cut, join, edit video with it easily. It also embeds many special effects, you can even add text to video or add background music, that's pretty cool. It worth a try. Here is the free download link.

New laptop used for video editing?

tootall7us

I need a new laptop especially for video editing and Photoshop. Would the Toshiba Satellite (model P875-S7310) be a good choice.

Answer
relatively, although I would recommend buying a pc with an nvidia or AMD graphics card to accelerate the video editing program allowing smoother previews and faster renders.graphics cards can also accelerate photoshop.

something like this would be good.
http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/Battalion_101_CZ-13_Gaming_Laptop
change the ram to
-8GB [8GB x 1] 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM [Laptop Memory]

it has a decent size hard drive, a good graphics card,a great processor,a good amount of ram.overall good.

Is this laptop good for HD video editing and rendering?

eagleeye78

Hi, i currently have a 4 month old MSI laptop with Intel core i5 processor, 4GB of ram and shared Intel HD graphics. My question is will these Specs be enough for what i do, i am constantly editing, converting and rendering HD video using Sony Vegas and xilisoft video converter. I know the i5 is pretty good, but will the graphics card handle my tasks for about 2-3 years! I Buyed the laptop roughly 4 months ago! Please guys i want a direct answer, no recommendations to others topics or sites!
Thank you.

Answer
i5 processor, but what speed?
It will surely be enough for some time with this amount of RAM (I work in new Vegas with 1.6 GHz and 512 RAM - don't ask how, lol), but no one can predict what the companies will push into the market in 2-3 years.
If your processor is somewhere between 2GHz and 3GHz, it should do fairly well in next two years, maybe even more, for these tasks. Less and I don't think it would do for such period, at least not without very slow rendering. But I'm only guessing, based on my own experiences, I'm no expert really. That's most I can tell you, hope it helps :)

how do i make youtube video?

gajan

hey, i needed help with making video and uploading them to youtube. I know how to upload it but i need to know what can i use to make videos with (i will be making video on my computer).

I want something like hypercam or something that can make good videos and wont slow my computer down (in other word i want something that is not lot of memory)

Thanks

Answer
There are many options for making a video to upload to Youtube. An excellent free video capture program that records whatever you are showing on your desktop which can be used for recording a Powerpoint presentation of photos can be found at www.jing.com.

Another great free screen recording software is www.camstudio.org that allows you to upload your audio track produced with audacity or other audio recording tool and sync it with the movie your produced.

I use a couple of paid video editing tools. Video Scrip Spinner will do some amazing video transitions to your selection of music. You can set it to randomize the photos to produce a unique video each time you use it.

Here is a video made with Video Script Spinner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wW9a17eo3VE (Taylor Swift Photo Collection)

Audio Swap was used within Youtube for free music background, but the program will teach you how to add audio tracks from various sources.

Answer
Top 5 Free Video Editing Software Programs

There are many free video editing software programs available for download today, but not all of them are good.
Many programs simply don't do what the manufacturers say that they will do, and others don't provide enough - or any support.

Of course, most free software does not include the same level or quality of support that you would expect to find with software that you purchase.

While you should remember that you get what you pay for, there really is some good free video editing software available. Here are the top five that we have found:

Microsoft Movie Maker

Already installed on newer computers that are running Windows XP, Movie Maker has drag and drop features to make creating and editing your movie easier. Microsoft has many add-ons for this software, and upgrades are available through the website. This is one of the best free video editing software programs available.

Apple iMovie
Apple iMovie is comparable to Windows Movie Maker, but Apple iMovie is used on the MAC operating system. Apple iMovie has many advanced features and add-ons. Unfortunately, the software is only free if you buy a new MAC system. If you want the software without buying the system, it is available for purchase. One of the best free video editing programs available for MAC users.

Avid FreeDV

Avid FreeDV is available for both Windows and MAC operating systems, and includes basic video and audio editing capabilities, as well as up to two streams of real-time effects. On the whole, a solid video editing program that is slightly hard to use, but very powerful once you learn its ins and outs.

Wax

Wax is a high performance and flexible free video editing software program. It
started out as a college project, and has since grown. Wax is good for both
home users and professionals. It can be used as a stand-alone application, or
as a plug-in to other video editors. The software also features unlimited video and audio tracks with top-down compositing.

Zwei-Stein

Zwei-Stein is great free video editing software, but the user interface is
very technical. It is full featured, offering many different effects. It can
edit up to 256 video, audio, and still image clips. There are up to 64 effects, which can be chained serially. An interesting program that's worth looking at.

Conclusion

Microsoft Movie Maker for Windows users, and Apple iMovie for MAC users are probably the two easiest to use free video editing software programs available. Both of the products will allow you to do what you want to do with your videos. However, trying out the others, you may find that you are able to add more effects and such to your videos as well. Of all the available programs out there, these are the top five free video editing software programs available.

whats the best video editing software?

anything besides windows movie maker.

Im wanting an video editing software that can really improve or change the picture quality (like change the contrast, brightness of a video) and improve the sound quality to make it sound clearer and 'crisper'.

I filmed my lil brother musical at school and I did a crap job filming it and my parents arent happy at the moment.

Doesnt really matter what video format its in

Answer
You can use Adobe programs. Use Adobe premier or adobe after effects which is a professional program for color corrections. There are tons of softwares out there. You can use simpler studios but these are very powerful programs. You can also convert you frame to photoshop layers, Correct the color and put it back to your video.

What is the best movie editing software?

Inimitable

I've been editing movies for a while but have only used Windows Movie Maker. The films I make tend to be action and gun based films, so I'm looking for a software with good effects like muzzle flashes and maybe blood. I don't really mind about the operating system, whether it is Apple or Windows.

Answer
All top audio/video editing is done with Apple software on Mac Pros.
Best software absolutely is Final Cut Pro by Apple. Link is here - just left click it:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio
Final Cut Studio includes bunch of software for total movie production.
Used by top Hollywood movie directors.
It is Mac only software.
Adobe has top windows software link is here
video editing software | Adobe Premiere Pro CS5
Bring high-performance editing to next-generation storytelling. See how.
http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/
Once again Apple is the king of any top audio/video editing.
But if you do it better have top processor and max ram because any audio/video editing is processor and memory intensive job - low end hardware will take forever to do the job.

Best laptop for video editing?

Q. I am in desprate need of a new laptop and my video editing sucks right now. I have a Dell and I use Windows Movie Maker and it is awful. I need a new laptop that has a great webcam and great for video editing. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer
This MSI laptop should be more than good enough for anything you'll ever need it to do.

Intel Core i5-2410M 2.3GHz Dual Core CPU
4GB DDR3 RAM
500GB Hard Drive
nVIDIA GeForce GT520M 1GB Dedicated Graphics

£515

http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/Other+products/MSI+CX640-018+15.6%22+Laptop+-+Core+i5+%5BCX640-018UK%5D+?productId=46944

If thats alittle overkill for what you need then here is a cheaper one that is still pretty decent.

Intel Core i3-2310M 2.1GHz Dual Core
4GB DDR3 RAM
320GB Hard Drive
Intel HD2000 Graphics

£420

http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Laptops/Laptops/MSI+CR640-020+15.6%22+SandyBridge+Laptop+%5BCR640-020UK%5D+?productId=46941

Both laptops have an integrated camera.

I'm building a new laptop for editing video and music and I have a question about my hard drive.?

Andrew

I'm getting the most expensive HP Pavilion with a 2.6 GHz i7 processor, 16 gb of ram, 2gb NVIDIA graphics card, etc. I'm torn between getting a 1.5 TB hard drive at 7200 rpm, or I can get a 160 gb SSD for about 60 more dollars. Just how much better will the SSD be and why? (In layman's terms please). Will I even notice a difference? Thanks in advance!

Answer
SSD is meaning solid state drive which is a very fast harddrive that uses laser technology to read information. A regular harddrive wud have a spinning disk inside spinning at 7200 rpm meaning 7200 rate per minute which is like average decent speed people buy these days.
SSD can go above 10,000 rpm which isn't the correct unit of measurement but its faster than 10,000rpm. I wouldn't go for it because since you have a laptop for video editing and music, u wud prefer the harddrive that holds the most memory. Get the 1.5TB cuz the SSD with 160 GB doesnt compare to the harddrive with 1500 GB.

Video Editing Software?

Josh

Quick Question, I need to know. What Video editing software has these requirements.
1. The Ability to mute A Videos audio, so I can play music in the background.
2. Its Free
3. I can merge Videos, and Shorten the length of videos

Answer
All video editors I know of can do all of that.

Take a look at the tutorials for Windows Movie Maker at
http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Tutorials/ - it may be WMM is all you need. It really is foolproof except that it's picky in what file formats it takes and the lack of native support for multiple video and audio tracks are a definite disadvantage (but there are workarounds).

The version 2 series were probably the most versatile, you can find them here - http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/windows-movie-maker.html - but you'll have problems installing the older versions on Windows 7. Windows Live Movie Maker is still good, but not so versatile.

Other free video editors are...

Wax - http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ - this is also a compositor - a bit like Adobe's After Effects - - unlimited video and audio tracks
VideoLAN Movie Creator - http://videolan.org/vlmc/ - up to 64 audio and video tracks
TrakAxPC - www.trakax.com/software/pc/
VideoSpin - videospin.com/ - just 1 video track so you may as well use WMM
VideoPad - the free version - http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/
Lightworks - http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ - I like this one - unlimited tracks ?
Serif MoviePlus - http://serif.com/free-video-editing-software/ - unlimited tracks ?
Ezvid - ezvid.com/ - 32 video and audio tracks

Another is Zwei-Stein. This is a good editor but I found the interface to be absolutely horrible.

VirtualDub, RAD Video tools, AVITricks and Avidemux are also good tools you should look at. Although not full editors like the others they have some useful features.

Lightworks and Wax together are a very good video editing system for free.

All are safe, at least from the sites I've linked to.

If you want to spend some money then there are reviews of 14 video editors under $100 at http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

More costly are video editors like Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere. Both of which are very good. Premiere is probably more advanced but harder to learn everything it can do.

Does anybody know any good video editing software for free?

How to Choose Video Editing Software?

Da

Answer
Video File Import and Export
The ability to import and export various video formats is the most important factor in the considering list. It should support all the popular video formats and minor updates should be accessed when there is a new format.

Versatility
Examine the versatility of the software by assessing the range of functions itâs able to perform. One of the ways is to look at the amount of options in each area. For example, even the most basic software has special effects you can add to your footage, but some software has far more special effects to choose from. Taking this further some software allows you to download even more, or create your own.

How finely the software can make adjustments is also an important factor. The most basic software allows you to adjust sound volume up and down, but more advanced software offers a broader range of fine adjustments.

Ease of use
I place particular importance on rating how easy each software package is to use. Some software is fantastically feature-rich, but a possible downside of all this power is that the software can be harder to get to grips with.

Based on the consideration of the above factors, I carefully pay particular notice of the experiences on testing several of video-editing software and find a nice cheap one â VideoFlick.

Video editing?

Q. Whats good video editing software for a beginner who wants to create AMV's. add subtitles to videos, edit footage, add voice overs to videos and watever else. Iv never edited before so i want to buy something efficent and useful but not too hard to master

Answer
When I started of editing, I used "Pinnacle Studio", its a really straight forward package to use and the newer editions have 100's of export approaches. Eg. To tape, DVD and wmv's/quick time (for web uploads), and all variations of those. I comes inbuilt with "TitleDeko", (a straight forward and effective text overlay tool) and "Hollywood FX"(For special effects, although these can be cheesy) I believe the newer versions also have HDV compatibility. Although doing amv's I doubt that will apply to you. The package itself is quite inexpensive, about â¬95(not sure able USD). And since Avid(the market standard in "pro" editing) took over pinnacle I'm sure there is plenty of support and 3rd party applications. Although not in your question, if you wanted to move up(after a year or two) to a more semi pro/pro system, I cannot recommend Avid Liquid highly enough although it will set you back about $500. Hope this was of help

What would be the best pc/mac for editing video?

shannon

I'm looking at buying a laptop to use for editing all the videos i make in my free time, but im not sure which one is best. Any suggestions that are at least sort of affordable?

Answer
I would get a PC... Check out http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/ Intel Core i7 Configurator ($759 3gb I7CPU or $669 4gb Core 2 Quad) for desktops..
Or Notebook within your pricer ange..

PC=Variety of specs, options, quality, prices, vendors, support
Mac=One vendor, limited options, still more expensive. Look below for more information..

Today, Macs use a subset of PC hardware. Why spend extra to get the same CPU chips, graphics cards and OS X isn't as secure as you think..

Don't believe the lies that Macs are better than PCs at graphics/animation.. Dreamworks Animation http://www.dreamworksanimation.com/ under studio click on Technology of Animation, an independent film maker I know uses PCs, a graphic artist I used to know uses PCs also.

A number of PCs can also run OS X (Mac OS) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=os+x+on+pc&btnG=Google+Search&aq=0&oq=os+x+on+ as well just that Apple makes it illegal in order to get Market share.. The reason why Mac can run native Windows is because it is using a subset of PC hardware,

If you decide to buy a Mac for running Windows, you will still have to get the same virus/spyware protection, and run into the same issues as a regular PC.

Now is a Mac worth buying for OS X?

I say: NO... for the following reasons...

ADVANTAGES WINDOWS :
Aprox 90% of the market is Windows and most PCs have windows already pre-installed.
1) Some websites require Internet Explorer, to run IE on Mac you really get ies4osx which is the Windows version of IE running really buggy and illegal if you don't have a legitimate copy of Windows.
2) Supports more devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by either 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)

SECURITY
Mac OS X was hacked in 2006 less than 30 minutes, and within 2 minutes in a contest in 2008, and within 10 seconds in 2009. In 2008, Linux and Vista were not hacked until another day when restrictions were lowered. Vista was next, and then Linux. In 2009 Windows 7 fell shortly after the Mac but Linux was unscathed.
Macs are standardized with Cameras, if your Mac gets hacked, the hacker can turn on your camera with more ease.
Please Note: All OS's have vulnerabilities.

VIRUSES
Mac OS X has viruses (and significantly on the rise), a friend of mine has a virused Mac. As more users use Macs, more viruses will come out for it. Especially when users think "they are safe".

QUALITY/PROBLEMS
Contrary to belief, Macs are not better quality. Apple also has been changing suppliers to try to "lower the price" and thus lowering quality. Even with the lower prices, Macs still cost more, they spend a higher percent of budget trying to make it look pretty, and marketing.

Sample of problems: Overheating Macbooks, OS X- not responding to keyboard, some units with 16bit screens, etc. Apple statistics are misleading since Mac users with problem machines are more likely to go out and buy a new computer than PC users. Apple is lowering prices which means you can expect lower quality than in the past. Apple had switched the manufacturers producing parts. OS X also has problems slowing down.

Repairs are more expensive than PCs since the IMac, Mac Mini are compact units, and Apple charges a premium for their services. Some repairs can be done by another repair service but the compact design of the computer causes problems.
With an IMac, if the problem is with the monitor, the whole computer would have to be brought in.
IMac and Mac mini lack expansion.

PRICE (snapshot taken 1-2 years ago but still holds true today)
A similar equipped PC is much cheaper to purchase than Mac. Lets use Dell (but you can compare with another PC Brand if you like)

PLEASE NOTE: I compare Apple Mac's vs Dells best deal. If you really want an all-in one the Dell all-in-one has more ram, wireless keyboard and mouse and equivalent to $400 for free making the Imac still more expensive when you matching specs. Personally I don't think the All-in-Ones are a good choice, and consider them overpriced, lack expandability and repairs both more expensive and require the entire computer.

PS: Apple knows that they need to make Macintosh look different than PC so all Macs except the Mac Pro will not have a tower option. Apple's low end lacks expandability but it makes the Mac "look different", if Mac had a tower for low-end, more people would realize the similarities between the two.

Dell: ($700)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ Dell Inspiron QUAD (4 Processor) CORE
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: 4GB Ram
HARD DRIVE: 500 GB hard Drive
OPTICAL DRIVE: 16x DVD/CD Read/Writer
GRAPHICS: ATI Radeon HD 256MB

The Mac Mini since it has no monitor, keyboard, mouse, very skimpy on options and setup and is not the best deal... The IMac is better price than the Mac Mini.

IMac ($1300)
CPU: 2.4 GHZ DUAL (2 Processor) CORE (SLOWER CPU)
SCREEN: 20inch Screen
MEMORY: (upgrade to) 4GB Ram (SAME)
HARD DRIVE: (upgrade to ) 320 GB hard Drive (LESS HARD DRIVE)

What kind of hardware would you need in a computer for video editing?

dt

I am thinking about getting a Mac Pro because I would like to make a high level special effects film, but am not sure if Adobe with a PC will be just as good and cheaper or better.

Anyhow, I may buy used and may not but I need to know how much ram ect it takes to make about a one hour film with special effects and probably use green screen technology and an HD quality camera.

If you dont know or dont desire to answer thoroughly do you know of a resource that breaks all this down with info?

Answer
Looking for a desktop... I would recommend getting a PC, this may not be an answer to your exact question but I think it pertains to you.. You can get a lot more hardware for less with a PC.. http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/xpsdt_gaming?c=us&cs=19&l=en&ref=dthp&s=dhs
An answer to your question.. the more ram the better.. a film will eat through all the ram you have especially the higher quality you do, eventually hard drive will be used for ram when your ram runs out on any machine... Another thing you may be interested in is dual booting with Ubuntu Studio http://ubuntustudio.org/ which is free

2) Supports devices (printers and other things you hook into the computer).
3) More business software/games
4) Want the dock on OS X (Mac)? google/yahoo rocketdock, objectdoc.
5) Used by businesses.

ADVANTAGES LINUX :
1) FREE (most versions are)
2) Install software by eitjher 1) Synaptic Package Manager, 2) Add/Remove 3) Opening a .deb or .rpm file (depending on distribution)
2) Like the Mac OS X effects? go yahoo/google COMPIZ FUSION which can do any cool effect a Mac can do and many ore....
