Answer
I'm not up on the specs required by the latest Adobe software, but the problem that jumps out to me is the hard drive: It's a 5400rpm unit, you would really want a seperate faster hard drive to act as the video scratch.

The Hard drive in the laptop has to run the system and programmes, if you then add in video data then it's not going to be stable with all those MBs getting chucked around.

You need to get a seperate 7200rpm drive. Lacie do rugged drives with this rotation speed, if you have a firewire port they are also bus powered.

I don't see any reference to the bus speed either, you want 768 or preferably faster. This dictates how quickly the various components can communicate. No point having a fast processor and a fast external drive if the system bus speed is strangling it.

These are why desktops are generally the better option for video editing. Unless you use a mac. Which I do.

Great Laptop for college? Pictures, movies, homework, video Editing....?

Lifeistoug

I'm going to be a college freshman soon, and I need a good laptop...I've always had my desktop...but never a laptop

You how smooth and silky a credit card feels, this may be weird, but I need my mouse pad to be smmoth and silky vs you know those old looking dell computers at school and how the mouse pad feels like a ricy, paperpack book...I can't stand those...drives me crazy...any way other than that

I need a laptop under between 300- 450, 500 if it's really good...
Somehting that will last a longtime, perferablly windows 7

I watch a lot of movies and streaming online and I love editing pictures and hd videos, so a computer that has a lot of memory and runs fast. I don't want my computer to freeze while editing a video...long battery is a plus

Any suggestions?

Answer
Hi Lifeistough,

You can get an Inspiron 14R with 3rd Generation Intel Core⢠i3 or i5 processor, 6 GB DDR3L 1600 MHz RAM, and a LED Backlit Display with Truelife and HD resolution and optional touch screen.

It is a compact (height- 1.1" front - 1.3" rear) and easy to carry due to its 14" screen and is ideal for college.

It is fairly powerful, while not a gaming rig, and can perform college tasks easily.

You may check the Inspiron range on the link below:

Hope this helps.

Would an Alienware PC be ideal for video editing?

Basquiat

http://www.alienware.com/products/area-51-desktop.aspx?SysCode=PC-AREA51-R6&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT

Answer
ALIENWARE IS JUNK. Yes you can customize what ever system you buy from them to do video editing (i actually set mine up for audio/video) however they will overcharge for everypart they install, and god forbid anything goes wrong with it while its under warranty (happens 75% of the time). You NEVER want to have to deal with the morrons in they're customer support department. I went through 2 yrs of hell dealing with them, and the end result is a report filed with the BBB, possible lemonlaw lawsuit against them, and a $5000 piece of junk that can only be used as a paperweight. You can google alienware yourself, and read some of the horror stories, that made people vow, never to buy Alienware again. http://www.badsoftware.com/alienwaresucks/

Most video editors actually go with a Mac G4 (although now its the Mac Pro they all use or upgrade to). Mac is pretty much the standard in the TV / Movie industries.

Basically if you want a good PC for video editing, you have a few options. You could build your own setup, http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20050420_building_a_pc_for_video_editing.html

But my suggestion is go with Dell. Since Dell bought out Alienwares namebrand, they started creating more systems designed for gaming, or audio/video editing. And Dell is usually cheaper.
Keep in mind tho, no matter where you get a system from, if its for video editing, it will get pricey.

If you're thinking about a laptop instead of a desktop check with;

Best Laptop For Video Editing?

Matthew Oc

I'm not a Mac user, and I'd like to continue using Sony Vegas Pro, with Windows XP.
My laptop is older however, so when I try to preview videos, it's slow and choppy since I have an HD camcorder.

What are some recommendations for laptops?
What type of processor, how many ghz, 5400 rpm or 7200, what brand, how big of ram, how much memory?

I'm a comp wiz, but I haven't had much experience with HD cams.
I just want the video to run smoothly, so I can edit properly.

Thank you!

Answer
SONY VAIO and IBM thinkpads are best for Input -Output peripheral transfer data range .
320 gb-7200 rpm with atleast 4GB of ram and 64-bit OS will definitely pull up u outta these kinda probs ... U can also increase ur RAM if u want to make it much faster . By increasing ur RAM , u can use the RAM as caching purposes by using software like EBOOSTR or RAMDISK on the basis of the fact that RAMS are much faster than pendrives and hardisks and can support a very high data storage speed and ya must buy it with Graphics Card coz graphic card includes its on supersonic memory and processor (256mb -512 mb is ok).
I recommended 64-bit OS coz these OS are only capable to use a LARGE RAM for ram 3GB above .
U ve discussed above about HD cams .. so Graphics card in playing such HD videos will help u alot as i ve already said above . U ll able to encode and decode the multiple videos at the same time with a high spedd and great performance , with troubleshoot ;)

here are some specs

Processor T6400 or T7700 or T8x00(intel) / TL-60 and above (AMD)
Graphics card with DEDICATED 256mb RAM atleast(not shared but dedicated)
250 or 320 GB ,7200rpm disk
4gb -6GB RAM and windows 64-bit on one partition and 32-bit on other partition(an option to boot from 2 windows will be asked while booting)

thats it .........
Simply go for FULLY LOADED laptop of SONY VAIO or IBM thinkpad with these CONFIG . u ll get everything in these in a very reasonable and affordable price .

Help with choosing a laptop and video editing program?

chap

I would like to edit non-hd video in some program like Premeire elements, Cyberlink power director, sony vegas, or something else in this catagory. I need some recommendations in choosing a laptop and editing program. Is $550 enough for the laptop?

What I'm aiming for:
I would like to buy a good tutorial book, like a dummy's guide, on the editing program.
Laptop should be capable to run program smoothly.
Editing program should be stable.
Would this be good?
DELL Inspiron M5030 (iM5030-2800B3D) Notebook
AMD Athlon II Dual-Core P360(2.30GHz)
4GB Memory DDR3 1333
ATI Radeon HD 4250

Answer
It has an AMD processor & only a Class 3 ATI shared graphics chip which is like free, so don't expect much from it for graphics performance. On my desktop, I have NERO photo/video editor before w/c is very easy to learn & use.

$500 is not enough. My suggestion, just save up your money for now & then when you have saved up, on Black Friday or for Christmas buy one that you wont need to upgrade in the long run.

Just remember these: The 1st thing you should look for on the computer surface just below the keyboard is A LOGO STICKER for NVIDIA or ATI MOBILITY RADEON. This SHOWS that the laptop has A DEDICATED GRAPHICS CARD (for AutoCAD & Adobe Photoshop). Diablo III, the game I would love most to play runs on 3D graphics & is rumored to need at least 1GB GRAPHICS MEMORY (lower graphics memory = CHEAPER laptop price),
so always check the system requirement specs on the game's box (ex. SIMS 3; see if your laptop meets all the requirements).
For gamers, make sure the GRAPHICS CARD on the laptop IS ONLY from the HIGH END or MIDRANGE:
click the link: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
Next important aspect is the RAM (memory). If you're in designing & you need to run applications like AutoCAD or softwares for editing photos & videos, just make sure that the laptop has AT LEAST 2GB DDR2 RAM modules in it (HIGHER IS BETTER; DDR3 & DDR5 are faster & newer types of memory modules that came out).

If you're a lil' bit low on budget, get the next best thing. The msi GE620-021 15.6" Gaming Notebook also features a 2nd Generation Intel Core i7 Processor 2630QM & 8GB DDR3 RAM, just 640GB HDD, but only a Class 2, 1GB NVIDIA GT540M dedicated graphics card that can also handle DirectX 11 effects from FRYS.com (SKU#: 6539123).
The ASUS N53SV-XR1 is $150 cheaper, but comes w/ ONLY 4GB of memory.
click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152258

Playing for long hours? Get a COOLER MASTER U2 Notebook Cooler w/c has dual purposes. Cool thing about it is, you can position the fans on the right spot for better ventialation. When travelling, detach the easily detacheable dual fan, then use the aluminum frame as a protection for your laptop's screen when inside the bag. I got mine from MicroCenter.com for $15, 48% cheaper than the regular $25 tag (FRYS.com SKU#: 6344931).
watch the video: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997730

If you're looking for an affordable, not so big, yet best in performance gaming laptop,
LOOK NO FURTHER.
Like me, get the MSI GT680R 15.6"-full HD GAMING NOTEBOOK which comes with the 2nd Generation Core i7 Processor 2630QM, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB Hard Disk Drive (2 x 500GB 7200rpm SATA HDD) & a powerful Class 1, 1.5GB NVIDIA GTX460M DDR5 dedicated graphics card that can handle DirectX 11 enhancing the 3D detail effects from FRYS.com (SKU#: 6547393).
I got the chance to use the laptop first hand at the FRYS store. I came back to check out the laptop every hour for 6 hrs & found out that the air from the vent of the laptop remained cool compared to any other laptops on display there, meaning this laptop has proper heat management, that means this laptop can handle long hours of gruelling play. Now, I'm all stewed up saving to buy this b4 Blizzard releases Diablo 3.
The MSI GT680R 15.6" Gaming Notebook w/ the Intel® Core⢠i-7 retails for $1,499.99 (+ tax & other sur-charges; www.FRYS.com). I chose to pay more to have the newest technology so that I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING OUTDATED WITHIN THE NEXT 11 YRS.
click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152239

Additional info, read on:
FYI: I always tell my customers, a laptop's battery is similar to a cell phone's. You charge it when it's depleted & you unplug the adapter when it is already fully charge (this will prevent the battery from getting overcharged & extend the life of the battery). So for less hassle, I always advice my customers to just remove the battery if they plan to use the computer for long hours straight (more than 1 hour) and just run it on AC power alone so as not to overcharge it & shorten the battery life.
ONLY USE THE BATTERY FOR PORTABILITY, if you're on a trip, at McDonalds or Starbucks.
For chargers, make sure you don't stretch out the cable too much that the one by the power jack that you plug into the side of the computer gets bent. Make sure this part is always straight or else the copper wires inside will break & soon you'll have the problem of the charger not working anymore like what happened to some of my callers.

Video Editing:

Sony Vegas: $600
http://sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro

Lightworks; semi-free alternative to Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas.
http://lwks.com

Lightworks has been used in the movie industry for more than 20 years. Lightworks also has the fastest workflow in the industry.

Lightworks used to cost more than $1,000, but now Lightworks Pro costs $60/year and you can download a free version from their website.

Sony Vegas costs $600 and that's the same price as using Lightworks Pro for 10 years.

Editors using Lightworks have produced numerous internationally renowned and Oscar and Emmy award-winning feature films and television programs, including The King's Speech, The Departed, Mission Impossible, Braveheart, and Pulp Fiction.

And yes! Lightworks is FREE if you don't need pro video codecs and you can use the free version as long as you want.

Visual Effects:

After Effects for VFX compositing; $20/month ($240/year)
http://adobe.com/products/aftereffects.html

Blender for 3D animation and VFX; free alternative to Maya and After Effects.
http://blender.org

Blender has a complete VFX pipeline in one single software package. Blender has tools for modeling, sculpting, rigging, animation, rotoscoping, chroma keying (green screen), motion tracking, smoke, fire, and fluid simulation, particles, destruction, physics, color grading, node compositing, and video editing.

After Effects uses "layer-based" compositing. Blender uses "node-based" compositing similar to Nuke; used in the movie industry http://thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke

Blender has more advanced features but After Effects is easier to use.

The easiest and most detailed tutorial on how to use Blender is Neal Hirsig's tutorial at http://gryllus.net/Blender/3D.html

Blender is 100% free with full functionality, no adware, no spyware, and no viruses, and you're allowed to use Blender in any production without having to pay for anything.

Good video special effects editing software?

Scott

Dose anybody know of any software out there were I can add things to my videos that were not in the video? (Add explosions, 3d models, etc.)

Answer
Hmmm .. you'r looking for something like a compositing app and a modelling app.

Blender is a powerful, multi-use editing/compositing and modeling tool. It's one of the best on the market and it's free.

Wax is another that might work

Other than that you're into the 'big guns' such as Adobe After effects

Yahoo! Answers community guidelines prohibit me from posting the link to my web site which has a complete list of these tools. A quick look at my profile will yield that information, though.

Can You Download IMac Video Editing Software For Windows XP?

Sid

I know it's a stupid question, but my teacher has a Mac and he has a really cool video editing system, and I have a Windows XP.
I'm really not interested in going and buying a Mac just for this software. I like Windows XP. Anyways, I was only wondering if you can get the IMac video editing software..I think it's called Final Cut Studio.
Windows Movie Maker really is getting old, you can't do much. I would like to know if there is a download anywhere that will work on a Windows XP computer.
If so, does anyone know where I could download it?

free video editing software?

David

im in the process of making a feature length home movie, but i want the editing to be good. in the movie, a person is having a conversation with themselves.

is there any editing softaware where i can fill half the screen with one video clip, and the other side with another?

or better yet, is there software where one clip overlays another, like in the end of Talladega Nights when the flag is waving in the background of Ricky Bobby?

Answer
Yes, there are free video editing applications. One is an Open Source application and is very powerful. It has its own user forums for when you need assistance and/or while learning how to use it. It does have a steep learning curve but once you get going you should be fine. Hold on while I get a link for you:

Jahshaka

http://jahshaka.org/

This is the #1 free Open Source video editing software. Check out the entire website because there is a rich amount of support. This is completely free. Open Source means absolutely no license agreements, and you can reverse engineer, and take it apart to customize to your hearts content.

Here is another, smaller, but still good free video editor, and two other free utilities you may find very useful in your multimedia editing and use.

http://www.overclockers.com/articles1409/

Don't forget about Windows Movie Maker, it may be a bit limited in some features and functionality, such as the fact you cannot burn your movie to DVD after creating it, but must instead import it into another application for that purpose. But, Windows has the answer to that too with its free DVD maker, which basically just takes the project and burns it after putting credits, titles and controls of your choice. Plus animated menus.

i am looking for a customize video editing software that full fill my all requirements ..

Answer
What kind of software are you looking for? Advanced or beginner? How much are you willing to spend?
The high end stuff is professional but really expensive. You can download a trial of either Adobe After Effects or Adobe Premiere from http://www.adobe.com/. You might want to consider the Creative Suite Production Premium. It's expensive, but has loads of great software in it. Have a look at http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/production/.
Another good piece of software is Sony Vegas. There are different versions depending on what you're looking for. Movie Studio is the cheapest at £44.79 but Vegas Pro is professional software. Have a look at http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro/compare for a comparison of the different versions.
Here's a link for reviews on professional video editing software http://video-production-software-review.toptenreviews.com/.
If you're looking for a cheaper software for basic editing then have a look at this link http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ for reviews on the top consumer level video editing software.
There's a lot of free software available for video editing, but none of them are amazing and can only do basic editing.
You can use Windows Movie Maker which should be installed on any Windows PC. You can run it from C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\MOVIEMK.exe. Other free software include:
Debugmode Wax - http://www.debugmode.com/wax/
Jahshaka - http://jahshaka.org/
Avidemux - http://www.avidemux.org/
SuperDVD Video Editor - http://www.alldj.com/video_editor/video_editor.htm

What are some cheap laptops for great for video editing?

Mark

Here is the thing. I want to create gaming videos for pc and console. I plan on recording games for the pc on another computer and having this one be the editor. I want the laptop to be able to run sony vegas edits ranging from 15 minutes to an hour and I want it able to capture gameplay along with 2 different streams of audio at the same time. I would prefer if it didn't cost more than $460 and obviously it needs to have at least 4 gigs of ram. Any other specs for the laptop don't matter. I will get an external hard drive separate so I can transfer videos easier and so when I capture it puts less stress on the device.

Answer
Your described use and "cheap laptop" won't work. Video editing makes heavy use of a graphics card, and any laptop with a dedicated graphics card won't be very cheap. Furthermore, if the computer's supposed to handle two streams of audio, perhaps run a game, and capture gameplay at the same time, we're talking some heavy multitasking. At least an i5, perhaps even more. And perhaps a dedicated (usb) sound card as well.

So... Cheap laptop? No. Not gonna happen.

You didn't say anything on size and weight, so...

Something like this, at least: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834216457

need a good Video Editing Software?

brandy q

can anyone suggest a nice video editing software having a lot of effects, etc. for free

Answer
Windows Movie Maker is currently the most popular choice for free video editing software but it doesn't always work very well. There's a new free video editing application that is much better.

VideoSpin is a brand new tool that allows you to create your own movie clips in minutes using your own videos and pictures.

The top 3 video edting software choices for the PC is Ulead Video Studio, Adobe Premiere Elements and Sony Vegas. These programs are not free, but you can download a free trial from their Web sites.

If your looking for free video edting software other than VideoSpin take a look at my first source.

For Mac, there's a compromise program available for the Mac, that's Final Cut Express. It's sort of the consumer version of Final Cut Pro/Studio, which is intended for professionals in the video editing field. It's also very expensive.

What editing software is good for making YouTube videos?

RagingWimp

I'm looking for editing software that would be able to take files recorded from something like FRAPS or Dxtory and split it into parts, render it to HD, and is rather easy to use. It would also be nice if it didn't cost more than $50-$60. Thanks :)

Answer
If using a Windows OS PC, then here are 2 of the best Video Editing Programs going. 1000s of effects and lots more on each Program. If doing HD Video, then do the Upgrade, it is needed and download one or both of the Programs and have fun.

Pinnacle Studio 14 HD Ultimate & Sony Vegas Pro 10

Screen Shot - http://asimplelife.ca/nle.html Upgrade your computer to AVCHD specs below and you can run both programs seen on my Web Page on your computer. Just Rejig the search term below in the YouTube search, from the instructions below.

This is not a program that can run on any computer, see below -

Minimum System Requirements

Windows® 7, Windows Vista® (SP2), or Windows XP (SP3)

-256 MB required for HD and AVCHD*

If interested, links below takes you to the sites, but you can get these two programs for free. Do this by opening a web browser, surfing over to YouTube. Once there, in the search box on that site, enter 'Pinnacle Studio 14' or âSony Vegas Pro 10â. Youâre looking for free download, find a link or video that says that, in the video description, there will be link for a free download. Make sure, before you do this, to make sure your computer can meet or exceed those Specs above, and pay special attention to the AVCHD specs if you have or are going to get a HD camcorder.

A laptop running these Programs, when rendering say a 10 minute Video out, be prepared, render times could leave your laptop useless, while rendering for 4 or 5 days on that file.

How to edit a video general?

Kalvin

Can you please describe how to edit videos? Doesn't have to be vlogs but smaller videos in general. I wanna learn how to jump cut. This next question is hard to explain but you know when you're, let's say, filming yourself talking then the next clip is the camera focusing on a random object BUT you can still hear yourself talking. How does that audio of you talking carry over to the clip of the camera focusing on the object. I don't know how you edit that into a video. Please help!

Answer
You need a Video Editing Program, like either one found below, where you can lock down an item or edit the Audio and Video separately on the Timeline, which both programs below can do easily.

Jump cut, Sony Vegas - http://youtu.be/-fCUjIKIGc0

Once you have that Video above, doing a Jump Cut in Pinnacle studio is much the same. If you want a picture or other Video over an existing Audio clip, that is easy also. Just lock your Audio down with the locks to the right of the Timeline, then put your picture on the Timeline below the Video. Doing that will give you the Split points on your Video that you need to remove to be able to insert the picture while everything else remains in sync. Easy to do.

Can anyone be at all HELPFUL?
Thank you +ST+FD+, Do you think that the second laptop would be able to run something like WoW, Skyrim, EQ, Etc.? .... dont really know much about comps.

Answer
You can find reviews of laptops at CNET. They have reviews for the latest laptops on the market.
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/?tag=hdr;brandnav
I recommend DELL laptops, because in my opinion they make the best laptops out there. I still use my DELL Inspiron 1501 that's nearly 5 years old. Take a look at this laptop.
It's called DELL Inspiron 15R and it's cheap and I think it's bes for the price. Specs:

Processor 2nd Generation Intel® Core⢠i5-2430M processor 2.40 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.00 GHz
Operating SystemGenuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64-Bit, English
Display15.6" High Definition (720p) LED Display with TrueLifeâ¢
Memory34GB3 Single Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz
Hard Drive 500GB4 SATA hard drive (5400RPM)
Optical Drive 8X Tray Load CD/DVD Burner (Dual Layer DVD+/-R Drive) with Roxio Creator 2011
Video CardIntel HD Graphics/HD Graphics 3000 with up to 1.6GB Dynamic Video Memory
Warranty1 Year Mail-in Repair in 10-14 days after Remote Diagnosis
Weight5.84 lbs

Price: $600

The only thing that sucks is the graphics card. It has Intel VGA, which is not suited for gaming. However, there's a more expensive version of this laptop, which costs $724 and has a dual graphics card. Specs:

Processor 2nd Generation Intel® Core⢠i5-2430M processor 2.40 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.00 GHz
Operating SystemGenuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64-Bit, English

Video CardAMD Radeon⢠HD 6470M (64-bit) 512MB (Dual)
Warranty1 Year Basic Support

I think this laptop is worth the money.

EDIT: I know many things for computers for a 15 year old kid. My goal is to become a programmer and I am very interested in technology. However, I'm not a gamer, so therefore I don't know much about gaming.

a good video editing software on a dell lollipop laptop ?

I have a dell lollipop laptop and my friend made a video of himself flying in like superman faces and stuff his laptop is a dell lollipop one and sos mine .. but i dont have that software.. is there anyway i can download it.... all i no is that the software has got stuff like face paste and stuff like that.... is there a way i can download it. ?

Answer
Not sure exactly which software you are referring to but there are numerous free editing tools for video.

If you are on a PC there are the following:

1) Jahshaka
Jahshaka is a free multi-use offline editing tool. Although it is still fairly new on the market.

2) T@B ZS4
T2B ZS4 is a free video editing and compositing tool from Zwei-Stein. Its not for everyone, but it could be for you.

3) Wax
A free tool with powerful editing and compositing abilities.

4) Video Spin
Video Spin is the free video editing tool from Avid/Pinnacle.

5) Vivia
Vivia is a basic editing software which is currently being developed and is in Beta testing. If you are using Linux or Windows you might want to check this out

6) Avidemux
One of the more stable and complete free tools available.

7) Blender
Blender is a powerful, multi-use editing/compositing and modeling tool. It's one of the best on the market and it's free.

8) Movica
A tool to deal with MPG and flash video. It's simple, it's powerful and it's free!

Generally speaking, unless you are only doing very basic things you may need more than one tool to create your final vision. I would recommend something like Avidemux or even Blender (If your after something very powerful and free)

Other than that you're into the 'big guns' such as Adobe Premier or Final Cut Pro ($$$)

Information about these and more can be found on my web site. Check my profile for that link

Best Laptop for Video Editing?

Becky

Hello! I edit videos with anime using programs like Sony Vegas and photoshop. But I am currently looking for a new laptop. But also stylish enough to use for school cus I don't edit 24/7 xD

Here are some preferred specs

64 bit windows 7 or 8

13 or 15 inch with 1920x1080p display (now I know a bigger screen is better for editing but I'm not really a big fan of that look and it's also a bit bulky)

8 gb RAM or higher, those programs take up alot of space!

At least 500 gb hard drive. Totally willing to sacrifice storage for speed.

i7 core processor

And I guess that's about it.

Some links to websites would be helpful! My budget is up to the $1000 range a litte bit over is no problem ;D

Brand buying advise

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down. What cost you less today is going to cost you more tomorrow.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. Lenovo will not allow people to read instruction on how to access the BIOS menu or to get info on their puters on their web site unless you connect to them thru Facebook. They do this so they can spy on their users. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. They are designed to catch your eye but they are not any more special then other laptops except for the fact that they are slim or thin. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Hybrids are the worse of the worse. The flip or detachable touch screens are just a disaster waiting to happen.

Never buy an All In One. They are far worst then laptops of any kind to service and they have a higher failure rate.

Choose wisely.

What's a good, downloadable video-editing software for PCs?

rachel

Does anyone know of any good video-editing software(s) for PCs? Preferably for free download. I realize this might be a little unrealistic but I'd like to know if anyone is familiar with one. I'd like to be able to trim videos, add text/images without cutting away from the actual video, and be able to add narration over video/images. I also realize that a Mac is a little more geared toward this sort of thing, but I really like my Toshiba and I'm not about to go out of my way to get a whole new laptop just for the sake of video-editing.

Thanks

Best PC laptop for video editing?

Music Is M

Hi!

I'm a film student looking to buy a new laptop this week, but I don't want to spend more than $1,200. I want the best possible quality I can get! I know macs are the big thing but on my budget I feel like I can get a faster/better computer in that price range by getting a PC. Also I edit with Avid Media Composer and Adobe premier/suite so if you know a laptop that handles those well... let me know!

Suggestions??

Also are computers that are good for gaming also good for video editing? I was checking out graphics cards and gaming computers seem to have the best ones!

Any opinions on this Toshiba?
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cdetland.to?poid=2000044488

Btw... I'm pretty skeptical about hp laptops because my last two broke and they always overheat!
To clarify, I am not looking for a gaming computer or a mac! Just a computer that will run fast and support intense video editing!

Answer
The Toshiba Qosmio X870 you're looking at isn't a good choice. The problem with that laptop is that it comes with a 17.3" 1600x900 display (as opposed to a 17.3" 1920x1080 display). 1600x900 resolution in a 17.3" display makes things onscreen large, and 17.3" displays that have 1600x900 resolution tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. You should make a point to avoid displays like this (15.6" 1366x768, 17.3" 1600x900, etc.) when it is reasonable to do so, unless you require the larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

This is more of an issue than a lot of other things. For example, an i5-3210M (as opposed to maybe an i7-3630QM) is not a terrible processor, a GTX 660M (as opposed to maybe a GTX 670M) is not a terrible GPU, but a 17.3" 1600x900 display is a terrible display. You need to be concerned with improving a display that's pretty bad before you start focusing on other aspects that are already pretty good in a lot of models.

Also note that things like the 12GB RAM, 3GB video memory, etc. are there purely for marketing purposes. They don't improve your gaming experience. You are not going to notice a difference in gaming by having more than ~8GB, and if you end up needing more in other programs than keep in mind that it's very cheap and easy to add more memory in after-market if you get a computer that has less memory than you need. As for the video memory: A 1.5GB GTX 670M is just as good as the 3GB version. The video memory is not the bottleneck, the GPU chip itself is. You'll see essentially the same performance on a 1.5GB version as you'll see on a version with unlimited memory.

That said, take a look at these models:

*Malibal Lotus P150EM** (GTX 670M, 15.6" 1920x1080 matte display) - **$1041 no tax**

Best Video Editing Software?

out of all these
Liquid Edition, AVID Xpress, EDIUS, Vegas, & Premiere Pro

which one is MORE SIMILAR to Final Cut Pro?!

Answer
The top-ranked video edting software for PC:Ulead Video Studio, Adobe Premiere Elements and SonyVegas. But I think they are recommended for experienced users, they do take some learning and much more expensive.
If you are looking for something advanced but still user friendly with reasonable price,I will recommend DVD Slideshow Builder. Very easy to use with professional features and same sort of layout as Movie Maker however a lot more powerful.Everything is laid out in an easy to follow step by step instruction.

does anyone know of a free video editing software that supports .MOV files?

Nikki

I just got a new digital camera [Kodak M341] and I really need a free editing software, because windows movie maker doesn't support .MOV files.

If there are no other editing softwares besides Pinnacle video spin, then is there a way to convert the file type to something else that windows movie maker will support?

Thanks in advance. ~Nikki

Answer
iMovie can support mov natively. All other editors that I know does not support mov files, like windows movie maker (wmv, avi), Sony Vegas (MPG), Adobe Premiere, You may try iMovie, or use a converter to convert kodak mov to wmm formats (I think wmm is awesome).

You may download the trial version for evaluation. Hope it helps!

Does anyone know a good video editing software that works well with AVCHD videos. I have Pinnacle Studio 15 right now and its not working to well. I have an ASUS laptop with Intel Pentium if that matters. Can anyone help me out?

Answer
GiliSoft Video Editor

No need to be worried about formats, frame rate or file sizes, the functions of video join, split and cut can be easily achieved by Gilisoft Video Editor. The video editing software allows you to edit video files in various formats like AVI, MPEG, H.264, SWF, MOV, WMV, etc. for playback on popular devices like iPod, iPhone, PSP, PS3, and so on. The three processes, video join, split and cut, can run in background without too much space occupation.
As a video joiner, splitter and cutter, Gilisoft Video Editor has an intuitive interface and makes it easy to turn original videos into works of art. And also you can watch the video in the preview window. Gilisoft Video Editor is well worthy of having a try.
