Great Laptop for college? Pictures, movies, homework, video Editing....?

Lifeistoug

I'm going to be a college freshman soon, and I need a good laptop...I've always had my desktop...but never a laptop

You how smooth and silky a credit card feels, this may be weird, but I need my mouse pad to be smmoth and silky vs you know those old looking dell computers at school and how the mouse pad feels like a ricy, paperpack book...I can't stand those...drives me crazy...any way other than that

I need a laptop under between 300- 450, 500 if it's really good...
Somehting that will last a longtime, perferablly windows 7

I watch a lot of movies and streaming online and I love editing pictures and hd videos, so a computer that has a lot of memory and runs fast. I don't want my computer to freeze while editing a video...long battery is a plus

Any suggestions?

Hi Lifeistough,

You can get an Inspiron 14R with 3rd Generation Intel Core⢠i3 or i5 processor, 6 GB DDR3L 1600 MHz RAM, and a LED Backlit Display with Truelife and HD resolution and optional touch screen.

It is a compact (height- 1.1" front - 1.3" rear) and easy to carry due to its 14" screen and is ideal for college.

It is fairly powerful, while not a gaming rig, and can perform college tasks easily.

You may check the Inspiron range on the link below:

Hope this helps.

Would an Alienware PC be ideal for video editing?

Answer
ALIENWARE IS JUNK. Yes you can customize what ever system you buy from them to do video editing (i actually set mine up for audio/video) however they will overcharge for everypart they install, and god forbid anything goes wrong with it while its under warranty (happens 75% of the time). You NEVER want to have to deal with the morrons in they're customer support department. I went through 2 yrs of hell dealing with them, and the end result is a report filed with the BBB, possible lemonlaw lawsuit against them, and a $5000 piece of junk that can only be used as a paperweight. You can google alienware yourself, and read some of the horror stories, that made people vow, never to buy Alienware again. http://www.badsoftware.com/alienwaresucks/

Most video editors actually go with a Mac G4 (although now its the Mac Pro they all use or upgrade to). Mac is pretty much the standard in the TV / Movie industries.

Basically if you want a good PC for video editing, you have a few options. You could build your own setup, http://www.jakeludington.com/ask_jake/20050420_building_a_pc_for_video_editing.html

But my suggestion is go with Dell. Since Dell bought out Alienwares namebrand, they started creating more systems designed for gaming, or audio/video editing. And Dell is usually cheaper.
Keep in mind tho, no matter where you get a system from, if its for video editing, it will get pricey.

If you're thinking about a laptop instead of a desktop check with;
