Answer
Absolutely! In fact I would say this is a bit over the top. What I advise those who are in the market for a no frills laptop is to get a common 14" or 15" Intel Core i3 or i5 system with three or four gigabytes of RAM and an integrated video chipset. These run around $330 at Best Buy and will do everything from the typical web browsing and internet to HD video and lightweight video editing and Photoshop work. In this case the system you're looking at has one and a half to two times the common about of memory, twice the typical hard drive space and a dedicated video chipset, so yes, you should be good!

What is a good alternative video-editing program to windows movie maker?

Devil's Ad

I updated to Windows movie maker 2012 from Windows live movie maker so that I would be able to use the "speed" options when editing video clips, but it is such a resource sucker that it lags like crazy before crashing. I don't mind paying less than $40 for a good program, but I need it to be able to: Edit/trim dozens of video clips into one cohesive video, add and edit music clips over, edit video playback speed, have a variety of transitions, ability to add captions/text with existing fonts on my computer, and a fairly simple user interface. (I'm not professional, so if it's a prog that assumes you're anything more than an amateur video editor, I'll be lost)

So basically, everything Windows Movie Maker 2012 can do, but with better written software that isn't such a CPU/RAM killer.

Specs for my laptop: Windows 7, 2.13 GHz Intel Core i3 processor, 4G RAM (not much, but worked fine with windows live movie maker except that it didn't have the option to slow down or speed up video playback.)

Answer
Hello friend, there are some good alternatives to windows maker. They are listed below.

1. Kate's Video Toolkit
While there's nothing too surprising in Kate's Video Toolkit, it does provide some basic but useful editing features. So you can trim files or join them, link two videos with a transition, create a sequence of videos with a custom soundtrack, and there's a simple file format conversion tool as well.

2. Avidemux
Avidemux is a small but capable open source video editor which can help you join clips, cut them (without re-encoding), and apply a lengthy list of useful filters (Add Logo, Crop, Flip, Rotate, Resize, Sharpen, Remove Noise, tweak brightness, contrast colours and more).

3. VSDC Free Video Editor
Non-linear video editors can take some time to learn, and VSDC Free Video Editor is no exception (a lack of useful documentation doesn't help, either). If you persevere, though, you'll find a capable editor with plenty of functionality: drawing and selection tools, plenty of colour and lighting corrections, some useful filters, transitions, audio effects and more.

Video editing Windows Movie Maker help?

---

Okay so the only editing software I have is Windows Movie Maker because I'm not able to purchase other programs. I want to remake a paranormal activity scene for my history class. Is there any way I can get a "night vision" looking filter added when I put it on the Movie Maker editor? And is there a way I can make it look like there's a date and the time running on the side of the corner of the camera? I want this to look as realistic as possible. If there is another video editor program that works better and is something I can possibly get for free please let me know. I will be using a Canon camera with good quality. All answers that will help is needed and no sarcastic remarks are welcomed. Thanks :)

Answer
There's a night vision filter for the Vista version of Movie Maker.
http://windowsmoviemakers.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?&PostID=192337

You can try to fake Night Vision by using two filters: first make the clip black and white and then Negative to reverse - but it won't have the glowing greenish tint. (Oops! I tried with Movie Maker 2012 and there is no Negative filter. Some of Patrick's filters work in Movie Maker 2012 and I tried every which way to get Night Vision to work but it wouldn't.:-(

There are a lot more title, transition and effects options in the Vista version that in the cut-down newer versions of Movie Maker but its a lot more hands-on. The one thing the Vista (and XP) version lacks are the Pan and Zoom options.

You can get a timer for the XP and Vista versions but I don't know of a free date countdown or count-up clip.

(The newer Windows Live versions of Movie Maker don't allow overlays so you can't add things onto a video background and Microsoft didn't provide developers with the software code so they can't make the extras for the Windows Live versions that they're making for the XP and the Vista versions.)

What free video capture software allows you to edit?

April

I need to make a short machinima video for class (made up of lots of short video clips), what free video capture software allows you to edit (or transfer the video to an editing program)?

I tried using Jing- the video lags a lot, plus it won't allow me to edit the video or open it in any program other than Jing.

Answer
Jing is a bloody joke. I use Camtasia Studio Pro 8 to record my gaming videos and edit in program for professional quality.

Its not free, but my secret to edit host file makes it free by disabling the program from contacting server.

What is so great about a Macbook Pro vs. a regular laptop?

Plasma Sta

Hey guys, I'm asking for a Macbook Pro 13" or 15" next year. I'm a teenage techie and go ahead and use techie words I'll probably understand what you're talking about. Anyway, the laptop I currently have is around $600 brand new. The Macbook Pros look like they work and act pretty good, but are they really worth the price they're asking for them? I know Mac OS is more stable and graphical and organized than any Microsoft OS, but for the price, what big and awesome new/modified features does a Macbook Pro come with that beats out that $500-700 difference between a regular laptop and a Macbook Pro?

I would like only Macbook Pro owners or someone who knows someone with one to answer. Thanks in advance!

Answer
MacBook Pro owner as well a Windows use........

OK why a MacBook Pro easy enough we use it for video editing for most items as well as any and all video projects from building the video to editing and producing the DVDs there is really no seamless program out there that we like than Final Cut Studio or Final Cut Pro.
We also use it for PhotoShop yes it works just as well on a WinTel yet when you have your video programs opened then go to PS you are on the same computer for functionally producing your work on.

Is it the 'Best' NAW.....big NAW I love it I just wish it cost a lot less then I would love it more.
Why do we stay on the Apple side overall the programs that are written for our field of work and the students and filmmakers, editors producers and alike like the Mac. I it is overall the easiest to use with our line of work and as it grew over years more people liked the way Apple made it run easier than other computers. I was in StarDollars a few nights back and all the laptops except one were Apple were they Filmmakers nope just students as well. Students from the local University.

MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air?

lalalala

I'm saving up to get a new laptop, and I'm thinking either the MacBook pro or the air. I wanna use it for school since I'm in high school. And like YouTube and tumblr and stuff, so which one would you recommend?

Answer
I recommend Macbook Pro.It is a smart choice for professionals and techinical users. It has everything you need in your pc unlike air.Air is cheap but Macbook Pro definitely worth your money. There are good things about both machines in terms of specification. Both are known to have a faster processor, long lasting battery, higher resolution but Air lacks optical media i.e. no built in CD/DVD drive. Where as, Macbook Pro has awesome video quality, video editing and many other extra features. Nobody can compete Macbook Pro in its classy look and unique performance. It's the best.

Whats the best laptop I can get currently under $700?

Arthur5088

I need a laptop for school mainly, but I do some gaming and also some video and sound editing on the side. Nothing heavy though, just a hobby. So basically I would need a decent amount of storage for music/videos. Good wifi reception and no smaller than 14-15" screen. So fat I really like the style of the HP Envy with beats speakers, but the only one under $700 carriers an AMD 10 processor and then it jumps to almost $1000 for an i5.
I've been told to stay i5 or higher.

Answer
All AMD machines are really not bad at all, the AMD CPU has a good GPU built in, which can work in crossfire if there is a GPU integrated onto the motherboard.

With today's power of of CPU's its really not as important as it was 10 years ago when the CPU's where still switching from 32 bit and single core to multicore and 64 bit.

What is important with today's laptops, when you want maximum performance out of them, the components will generate heat, inside of a small enclosure, which is what really generates the problems, like hardware failure and generally low performance.

the general rule of thumb is, the bigger the laptop, the faster it will dissipate heat from the internal components, but in turn you sacrifice mobility, as the laptop gets bigger.

Currently im sitting on a DV6Z, last generation hardware, which can play just about anything I throw at it, at high settings but the 15 inch laptop sometimes struggles with heat dissipation especially during the summertime.

Intel indeed core for core churns out more performance compared to AMD, but that comes at a premium and CPU performance is, day by day becoming less and less important, as Graphics are becoming more and more important.

Overall, the amount of power you will need from CPU and GPU should be your main consideration, as overkill in laptops usually becomes a bad thing, but the corporations don't care, they just want to market and sell, its up to you to chose the correct computer.

At 700$ you would probably be much better off with an all AMD machine, that's about how much I paid for mines and the power to heat dissipation is just right, but you will have a choice of newer components, which will in fact be just right and more powerful then my laptop, which I think is very good for its class and value.

Best laptop for video editing?

I like to make videos and right now I'm making them on my desktop but I can't exactly transport that and also it's not really good. I'm looking for something under $700 and is great for video editing. Also if you know any good places to get a MacBook for under $900 that would be good as well. I don't care if it's been used.

Answer
The HP Pavilion dv7-7010us 17.3-Inch Laptop should be good for video editing.

Video Editing Software...?

Rainn

I know it's a real long-shot, but are there any good video editing softwares (i mean better than, say, windows movie maker for example), that you can download for free, that don't give your computer viruses? and please don't say anything that's only available for a Mac, because I have a windows PC

Answer
There's several of them.

Take a look at the tutorials for Windows Movie Maker at
http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Tutorials/ - it may be WMM is all you need. It really is foolproof except that it's picky in what file formats it takes and the lack of native support for multiple video and audio tracks are a definite disadvantage (but there are workarounds).

The version 2 series were probably the most versatile, you can find them here - http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/windows-movie-maker.html - but you'll have problems installing the older versions on Windows 7. Windows Live Movie Maker is still good, but not so versatile.

Other free video editors are...

Wax - http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ - this is also a compositor - a bit like Adobe's After Effects - - unlimited video and audio tracks
VideoLAN Movie Creator - http://videolan.org/vlmc/ - up to 64 audio and video tracks
TrakAxPC - www.trakax.com/software/pc/
VideoSpin - http://videospin.com/ - just 1 video track so you may as well use WMM
VideoPad - the free version - http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/
Lightworks - http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ - I like this one - unlimited tracks ?
Serif MoviePlus - http://serif.com/free-video-editing-software/ - unlimited tracks ?
Ezvid - ezvid.com/ - 32 video and audio tracks

Another is Zwei-Stein. This is a good editor but I found the interface to be absolutely horrible.

VirtualDub, RAD Video tools, AVITricks and Avidemux are also good tools you should look at. Although not full editors like the others they have some useful features.

Lightworks and Wax together are a very good video editing system for free.

All are safe, at least from the sites I've linked to.

If you want to spend some money then there are reviews of 14 video editors under $100 at http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/

More costly are video editors like Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere. Both of which are very good. Premiere is probably more advanced but harder to learn everything it can do.

VERY slow video in Premiere pro cs6?

DDD

I just recently got into video editing so excuse me if I seem uninformed. I film on my Canon t3i and imported a few videos to Premiere pro to edit. The video plays SO SLOW that I can't edit anything. SO I read about rendering. I rendered one of the videos and it's still lagging and stuck at times. I'm operating on a i7 laptop. The has NVIDIA GEFORCE GT540M. Am I underpowered? Or is something else wrong..

Answer
yes. don't do this on a laptop. premiere pro cs4 32-bit that came with cs5 was slow (took hour or more) when it was working on my home videos. I have no good mercury-playback-supported GPU such as the GTX 570. for that you need to look at the system requirements on the software before you buy.
either
- be patient
- get a maxed out desktop with the appropriate specs and especially max out the RAM - I suggest an i7-3960x system with 64GB of RAM or a xeon e5-based workstation - either of those should give you plenty of boost, but your biggest lag will be the hard disk. and intel 313 24GB SSD used for SRT disk cache will solve some of the speed problems, plus, with that extra RAM, windows will use it for disk cache also. this might be better than hybrid drives, because those drives have an unfortunately small SLC flash cache. granted it lasts 10x longer than MLC, but video will probably beat it out of the drive.
- get a mobile workstation like the goboxx from http://boxxtech.com

the stuck I can't fix,it's due to bugs in the adobe software. encore was really broken in cs5, and the media encoder doesn't do vp8 or ogg, so I can't publish to the web. :-( - and I paid a lot of money for this...

Video editing using Adobe Premiere CS5 on HP Elitebook 8460W with ATI Graphics?

bigjd

I bought a laptop 2 weeks ago replacing my 6 year old Toshiba Satellite with Core 2 duo and 3 gb memory. The laptop I bought is an HP Elitebook 8460w with the following specs:

Intel Core i7-2620M Processor (2.70 GHz, 4 MB L3 cache, 2 cores/4 threads, 35W)*
Up to 3.40 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Technology.
8 GB DDR3 RAM
500 GB 7500 RPM HDD
Ati Firepro m3900 graphics card with 1GB

Main reason I got this laptop was because I have a youtube channel and I make videos, I used Movie Maker on my old toshiba and wanted to upgrade to Adobe Premiere CS5.

So after 2 weeks I installed Adobe Premiere CS5 on the HP, and came to find out that it maxes out my CPU just rendering, just a 40 second video takes 10 minutes to render. I came to find out that CS5 only supports the NVIDIA CUDA GPU, so basically the Video Card on my HP is useless.

So my question is this, is there any way to unlock the ATI Firepro m3900 GPU so I could use it for editing? If not is there any other software that I could use that would be better than Windows Movie Maker, I don't think I want to go back to that, or is there any other options?

Answer
CS5 actually requires some mods to work with CUDA-cored GPUS, but that's not the point we're after.

The thing is, your FirePro m3900 is definitely working during the rendering process--it's just that it's not doing a lot. The m3900 is an entry-level workstation card, so it's not too good for anything other than maybe heavy Excel or programming.

With the ATI Overclock tool, you could up the voltage a little bit to try to make the thing run a bit faster, but other than that, you're outta luck. Sorry if this wasn't what you wanted to hear.

Help with choosing a laptop and video editing program?

chap

I would like to edit non-hd video in some program like Premeire elements, Cyberlink power director, sony vegas, or something else in this catagory. I need some recommendations in choosing a laptop and editing program. Is $550 enough for the laptop?

What I'm aiming for:
I would like to buy a good tutorial book, like a dummy's guide, on the editing program.
Laptop should be capable to run program smoothly.
Editing program should be stable.
Would this be good?
DELL Inspiron M5030 (iM5030-2800B3D) Notebook
AMD Athlon II Dual-Core P360(2.30GHz)
4GB Memory DDR3 1333
ATI Radeon HD 4250

Answer
It has an AMD processor & only a Class 3 ATI shared graphics chip which is like free, so don't expect much from it for graphics performance. On my desktop, I have NERO photo/video editor before w/c is very easy to learn & use.

$500 is not enough. My suggestion, just save up your money for now & then when you have saved up, on Black Friday or for Christmas buy one that you wont need to upgrade in the long run.

Just remember these: The 1st thing you should look for on the computer surface just below the keyboard is A LOGO STICKER for NVIDIA or ATI MOBILITY RADEON. This SHOWS that the laptop has A DEDICATED GRAPHICS CARD (for AutoCAD & Adobe Photoshop). Diablo III, the game I would love most to play runs on 3D graphics & is rumored to need at least 1GB GRAPHICS MEMORY (lower graphics memory = CHEAPER laptop price),
so always check the system requirement specs on the game's box (ex. SIMS 3; see if your laptop meets all the requirements).
For gamers, make sure the GRAPHICS CARD on the laptop IS ONLY from the HIGH END or MIDRANGE:
click the link: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
Next important aspect is the RAM (memory). If you're in designing & you need to run applications like AutoCAD or softwares for editing photos & videos, just make sure that the laptop has AT LEAST 2GB DDR2 RAM modules in it (HIGHER IS BETTER; DDR3 & DDR5 are faster & newer types of memory modules that came out).

If you're a lil' bit low on budget, get the next best thing. The msi GE620-021 15.6" Gaming Notebook also features a 2nd Generation Intel Core i7 Processor 2630QM & 8GB DDR3 RAM, just 640GB HDD, but only a Class 2, 1GB NVIDIA GT540M dedicated graphics card that can also handle DirectX 11 effects from FRYS.com (SKU#: 6539123).
The ASUS N53SV-XR1 is $150 cheaper, but comes w/ ONLY 4GB of memory.
click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152258

Playing for long hours? Get a COOLER MASTER U2 Notebook Cooler w/c has dual purposes. Cool thing about it is, you can position the fans on the right spot for better ventialation. When travelling, detach the easily detacheable dual fan, then use the aluminum frame as a protection for your laptop's screen when inside the bag. I got mine from MicroCenter.com for $15, 48% cheaper than the regular $25 tag (FRYS.com SKU#: 6344931).

If you're looking for an affordable, not so big, yet best in performance gaming laptop,
LOOK NO FURTHER.
Like me, get the MSI GT680R 15.6"-full HD GAMING NOTEBOOK which comes with the 2nd Generation Core i7 Processor 2630QM, 8GB DDR3 RAM, 1TB Hard Disk Drive (2 x 500GB 7200rpm SATA HDD) & a powerful Class 1, 1.5GB NVIDIA GTX460M DDR5 dedicated graphics card that can handle DirectX 11 enhancing the 3D detail effects from FRYS.com (SKU#: 6547393).
I got the chance to use the laptop first hand at the FRYS store. I came back to check out the laptop every hour for 6 hrs & found out that the air from the vent of the laptop remained cool compared to any other laptops on display there, meaning this laptop has proper heat management, that means this laptop can handle long hours of gruelling play. Now, I'm all stewed up saving to buy this b4 Blizzard releases Diablo 3.
The MSI GT680R 15.6" Gaming Notebook w/ the Intel® Core⢠i-7 retails for $1,499.99 (+ tax & other sur-charges; www.FRYS.com). I chose to pay more to have the newest technology so that I DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IT GETTING OUTDATED WITHIN THE NEXT 11 YRS.
click here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152239

Additional info, read on:
FYI: I always tell my customers, a laptop's battery is similar to a cell phone's. You charge it when it's depleted & you unplug the adapter when it is already fully charge (this will prevent the battery from getting overcharged & extend the life of the battery). So for less hassle, I always advice my customers to just remove the battery if they plan to use the computer for long hours straight (more than 1 hour) and just run it on AC power alone so as not to overcharge it & shorten the battery life.
ONLY USE THE BATTERY FOR PORTABILITY, if you're on a trip, at McDonalds or Starbucks.
For chargers, make sure you don't stretch out the cable too much that the one by the power jack that you plug into the side of the computer gets bent. Make sure this part is always straight or else the copper wires inside will break & soon you'll have the problem of the charger not working anymore like what happened to some of my callers.

Recommended Spec For HD Video Editing Laptop?

Mike

The laptop I am currently using struggles when editing videos - and is almost impossible to edit HD videos with. I need something a bit more powerful.

So, what would be the minimum requirements + a bit more, just to be sure?

Answer
Began doing video production for my job at the end of last year. Like you, at the time, I was attempting to edit HD footage with an underpowered laptop, both at work and at home. When I was researching how to upgrade my system, I found this article, which was a really big help: http://www.videoguys.com/Guide/E/Videoguys+System+recommendations+for+Video+Editing/0x4aebb06ba071d2b6a2cd784ce243a6c6.aspx

For home, I bought a Dell Studio XPS 435T: 8GB RAM, i7-920 processor, ATI Radeon HD video card, 750GB storage, and a 24'' monitor. At work, the company got me a Dell business workstation with 12GB RAM and a Xeon processor, with two 22'' monitors. A significant upgrade, to say the least. That may seem superfluous to you, but if you really want to build an HD-capable system, you need to go as beefy as you can.

That's why my advice would be to steer you away from a laptop; with a desktop, you're going to get far more bang for your buck, not to mention a much bigger screen.

It used to take an hour and a half to render a four minute video, and while editing, I was forced to have the preview window at the lowest/smallest resolution, both because of the lack of power and lack of screen real estate--not much fun and horribly time-consuming. Now, it takes eight minutes and I get to have the preview window at the best and biggest resolution, along with a timeline that stretches across two monitors--a whole lot of fun and much more efficient.

Which type of high def camcorder and files are you working with? AVCHD or HDV? Here's a blog post I wrote about my own workflow: http://www.werdofbert.com/2009/08/best-workflow-avchd-convert-editing.html

Any further questions, you can leave a comment and I'll get back to you. Hope this helped your decision!

Answer
The proc is too slow for my tastes. The memory is a bit slow, too. Probably, the bus is on the low end. You should have a second HDD to serve as a scratch disk, and preferably, you should be using a striped RAID.

Generally speaking, video editing is very hard on the proc, southbridge and other parts; you're going to have one hot laptop on your hands. And it's not going to be very quick.

Ideally, quad-core Xeon at 3.5+ GHz, DDR3-2000 RAM and SATA RAID 0 on twin 500GBs running 10,000 RPM

Answer
Should be more than enough. The processor is very fast. The most concern when dealing with HD video is whether the graphics card can keep up, but the Radeon HD3650 is a very solid performing card. With that said, last thing left to do install and start editing. Enjoy!

What is the best free open-source video editing software?

humorist_4

Answer
Windows Movie Maker is currently the most popular choice for free video editing software but it doesn't always work very well. There's a new free video editing application that is much better.

VideoSpin is a brand new tool that allows you to create your own movie clips in minutes using your own videos and pictures.

The top 3 video edting software choices for the PC is Ulead Video Studio, Adobe Premiere Elements and Sony Vegas. These programs are not free, but you can download a free trial from their Web sites.

If your looking for free video edting software other than VideoSpin take a look at my first source.

What is a good video editing software?

Q. I have Windows Movie Maker but it doesn't support my Kodak Zi6 videos! (I don't feel like converting them!) So is there a good one like Windows Movie Maker that supports Quicktime & .MOV videos? PLEASE HELP!

Answer
Highly recommend womble mpeg video wizard dvd.

I had quite a play around with a lot of video editing software, and settled on mpeg video wizard dvd. Simple, effective, can do some advanced things, but easy to make up something simple. It can directly edit the mov files. I think it's a great choice for the step up from windows movie maker.

If you are after a little extra, Adobe, the video package(Premiere, After effects) is well, it's just a lot harder to use all the advanced stuff though.

You could download the trial version from their website and have a try.

adobe: http://www.adobe.com/
womble: http://womble.com/

That's my experince anyway, and i edit video almost everyday, it's my job.

Good luck.

Any good free video editing software out there?

George

I can't find any. All my friends are telling me to download a cracked version of Sony Vegas but I don't want to because it's illegal and I think it's unfair to Sony :/ So any good ones? I just want to make montages and stuff for my games. Windows movie maker seems a little basic for me, and I think the quality isn't always amazing exporting it. So any free ones? Thanks. 10 points for best one and even better if you could link a youtube video showing how it works and stuff :)

Video editing software.?

Mitch

So I used to use Windows live movie maker to edit my game recordings as it had the codec required. But now windows live movie maker has changed to a crap movie maker that crashes and freezes. I have sony vegas 10 but it doesn't have the codec AVI to edit my recordings. So now I don't know what to do. Any help would be much appreciated :)
But when i try to import it says it doesn't have the codec AVI it's not the rendering it's the importing that's the problem :)
Anyone know how I could fix this problem with Sony Vegas? It's a good programme. If only I could use it.

I was going to download windows movie maker but was told on the website it wasn't compatible w/ windows 8, so, now i'm stuck.

Free Video editing program?

Vagineer

What's a good, free video editing program?

Answer
Stupeflix is a great web based service for creating and uploading videos. Photobucket is a great web based and FREE editing tools. The software behind it comes from Adobe who make some of the best commercial ($$$) photo and video editors. Also check out Jaycut which allows you to export and save your videos! If you need/want more features downloading VideoSpin, VideoPad or VideoThang are great options. Still free, but you have to download the software.

For under $100 you can buy Adobe Premiere Elements.

Pixorial is a great tool for many media - free, with full features, for up to 10gb of video.

There is also new freeware version of Windows Movie Maker that works on Windows Vista, XP and even Windows 7. Microsoft has added and deleted features from each version and this version has all the features from each version plus some extras.

Free video editing software?

Bob

I have a PC and, I love iMovie on mac, but i just want a 100% free movie editor. I found some good software like Avid and AVS but they both weren't 100% free and put a water mark on the finished video. Help please

Answer
If you have a PC, you should also have Windows Movie Maker already installed (look in the programs).

But if that doesn't wow you, how about three very good freeware video editor programs, Freemake, FileLab, or VSDC? Each is safe, fully functioning, no watermarks, will not ask for money, and are recent releases that are HD capable.

They are listed in order of increasing capabilities. Freemake provides merging of video clips, and simple editing such as cutting and splicing. It will also automatically upload your video to YouTube if desired. It is also capable of converting your video to just about any video format in existence. FileLab has much more features, such as color correction, title editor, and special effects. FileLab also runs on both PC's and Macs (no-kidding)! VSDC is an advanced editor, capable of effects such as green screen editing. The following link has more info, but make sure to also view other articles on this site, as they outline other capabilities of these three programs.:

How feasible is it for me to use my laptop as my video editing station?

somegirl

If I keep all my personal documents and everything on my external hard drive and customize my laptop for memory, etc. should I be able to have a portable video editing station with my laptop? (I've worked with final cut pro, but am thinking of using vegas pro on my laptop)

Answer
I have been using vegas for video editing on my laptop for 4 years with no problems. You can do all of the same things on a laptop that you can do on a desktop system. The important thing is to make sure your laptop has the resources to edit video. The bigger your project, the more CPU and memory you will need and a GPU will just add to ease of use and faster rendering. Before I got my new system was editing video on a 450 MHz celeron with no GPU successfully. Rendering was a bit slow but it still worked. I can imagine that your laptop is probably 5 times faster than that and if you do have a GPU then you should e good to go.

Best laptop for video editing?

Kira

I currently have a hp Pavilion dv7, i5 core and running Windows 7. It's alright, but Sony Vegas is a pain in the rear to use. It always crashes on me, doesn't feel like working, etc. I know how to use pretty much all types if video editing software, (Final Cut, too), and either way, I don't mind learning. The thing is I'm going to start film school and I want a good, decent computer that's reliable and not going to let me down when it comes to video editing, because that's pretty much what I'm going to be doing. It would also be nice if it's simply just an all-around good laptop. Mac or PC, I don't have a particular preference, just tell me which is the best route to go.

Answer
Although I now own an HP laptop for personal use, for video editing, I always preferred my Mac. It was very user friendly and everything was easy to do on there. However, my problem with my last Mac laptop was how flimsy the actual casing was. I switched not because it stopped working, but because the bezel holding the screen in broke and Apple wanted $800 to fix it. They didn't have a bezel to switch out. They said I had to put a brand new screen (top piece) on it. The screen itself was still fine. I talked to them and got them down to 400, but that was NOT including the service which I would have had to pay. I couldn't see paying for that when I could get a new machine that was faster and did everything I needed it to do. Windows 7 is very similar to Mac, but as far as video editing, I still prefer my Mac. I just can't move it off the desk anymore. As you know, you'll need something with a lot of memory and a fast processor. So basically if you can afford the Mac and are very careful with it, I'd go that route. Most professionals do use them. All my friends that are in the business do, actually. Hope that helps.

The best window laptop for video editing?

LenaH

I'm looking for a window laptop that is compatible for video editing. It doesn't have to be portable because i'll be using the laptop mostly at home. Right now i use Mac OS X (iMovie) and i want the Sony Vegas program, which means i need to get a window laptop. So do you know any laptop that is compatible for video editing?

P.S Hopefully the maximum price is $1000.

Answer
I dont recommend a laptop for video editing because sometimes the rendering can take a long time and overheat your laptop. Laptops arent really designed for video editing or gaming.

You should get a desktop PC with a Quad processor and good video card and RAM. You can get a nice one for $600-$700. and unlike a laptop, you can expand the desktop and upgrade as much as you want.

Camcorder connected to laptop? Video Editing Software?

I'm thinking of asking for that for Christmas, but I want to know if you can connect that to a laptop. If so, would the cable be included with that camera (or any camcorder for that matter) or would I need to buy my own?

Also I love using photoshop for image editing, but is there an Adobe product for video editing?

Answer
This camcorder only comes with composite video output so it will only connect to a TV unless you have a video capture card on your laptop which most don't.

To edit the video, you'll need to take the finalized disc from this camcorder to your laptop, rip the files to your hard disk, then use which ever software you are using for video editing.

Answer
It is all in the final editing.. any half decent video editing software will have an image stabilization plugin.. these are either stand alone (purchased separately like Marcelli) or built in (Magix Video edit pro comes to mind and does a great job cheap)... it is actually extremely easy to get the video stabilized with the right software, pretty much 1 click done. Hope this helps ;) You can see how they function on youtube below..

Best Linux distro for me?

hey everyone... i was wondering if someone could help me pick the best Linux distro for my situation, I've basically narrowed it down to ubuntu or fedora... but I'm open to other suggestions too. The main reason why I want to install Linux on a second hard drive is because I'm taking a c++ class right now and i would like to program in the actual UNIX environment instead of using our schools remote access system. This isn't the only reason I want to use it though, I eventually want to try and replace my current OS eventually, which means that I want good media interface, like a good music player, video player, maybe even some music recording/editing software...I'm basically looking for the best all around everyday distro that also has all the bells and whistles that Linux is know for. thanks

Video Editing Softwares?

I'm Looking for a GOOD video editing software for free that i can use on my Linux Mint laptop. I'm mainly looking for it to have things like slow/fast motion, video transition effects, and also to make a good-looking intro. I'm making some Quick-scoping Montages for my cousin, and he is currently using a Sam-sung Galaxy X 2 To film and edit.......Let's just say it looks like CRAP, so I'm going to edit it FOR him once he gets an HD PVR. Best PC laptop for video editing?

Music Is M

Hi!

I'm a film student looking to buy a new laptop this week, but I don't want to spend more than $1,200. I want the best possible quality I can get! I know macs are the big thing but on my budget I feel like I can get a faster/better computer in that price range by getting a PC. Also I edit with Avid Media Composer and Adobe premier/suite so if you know a laptop that handles those well... let me know!

Suggestions??

Also are computers that are good for gaming also good for video editing? I was checking out graphics cards and gaming computers seem to have the best ones!

Any opinions on this Toshiba?
http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cdetland.to?poid=2000044488

Btw... I'm pretty skeptical about hp laptops because my last two broke and they always overheat!
To clarify, I am not looking for a gaming computer or a mac! Just a computer that will run fast and support intense video editing!

Answer
The Toshiba Qosmio X870 you're looking at isn't a good choice. The problem with that laptop is that it comes with a 17.3" 1600x900 display (as opposed to a 17.3" 1920x1080 display). 1600x900 resolution in a 17.3" display makes things onscreen large, and 17.3" displays that have 1600x900 resolution tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. You should make a point to avoid displays like this (15.6" 1366x768, 17.3" 1600x900, etc.) when it is reasonable to do so, unless you require the larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

This is more of an issue than a lot of other things. For example, an i5-3210M (as opposed to maybe an i7-3630QM) is not a terrible processor, a GTX 660M (as opposed to maybe a GTX 670M) is not a terrible GPU, but a 17.3" 1600x900 display is a terrible display. You need to be concerned with improving a display that's pretty bad before you start focusing on other aspects that are already pretty good in a lot of models.

Also note that things like the 12GB RAM, 3GB video memory, etc. are there purely for marketing purposes. They don't improve your gaming experience. You are not going to notice a difference in gaming by having more than ~8GB, and if you end up needing more in other programs than keep in mind that it's very cheap and easy to add more memory in after-market if you get a computer that has less memory than you need. As for the video memory: A 1.5GB GTX 670M is just as good as the 3GB version. The video memory is not the bottleneck, the GPU chip itself is. You'll see essentially the same performance on a 1.5GB version as you'll see on a version with unlimited memory.

Answer
I'm not up on the specs required by the latest Adobe software, but the problem that jumps out to me is the hard drive: It's a 5400rpm unit, you would really want a seperate faster hard drive to act as the video scratch.

The Hard drive in the laptop has to run the system and programmes, if you then add in video data then it's not going to be stable with all those MBs getting chucked around.

You need to get a seperate 7200rpm drive. Lacie do rugged drives with this rotation speed, if you have a firewire port they are also bus powered.

I don't see any reference to the bus speed either, you want 768 or preferably faster. This dictates how quickly the various components can communicate. No point having a fast processor and a fast external drive if the system bus speed is strangling it.

These are why desktops are generally the better option for video editing. Unless you use a mac. Which I do.

Which CPU & GPU is best for video editing ?

Chock

HI,
Thank you very much for giving attention here. I am going to buy a PC very soon, I already have a (Core2duo 2.93 ghz 1st gen) Desktop PC and a Laptop (HP Pro-Book 4530s i5 2450m and 4 GB 1333mhz RAM)
I am a student and may be a fantastic freelancer :)
I work on various types of Video editing/rendering/producing projects. May you know both of my pc (that I have) is not capable to handle professional video editing, they crying when I put some 3D effects on my project on after effects CS6.
on my lapto its takes 50-80 minute to render a 5 minute 3D video (when only few 3D effects added).

Actually my target is to do only video editing with my new PC (that I want to by). I need a PC that will be the best on my budget. Well may you need to know my budget, but Its not fixed properly. But I listed/selected almost everything that need to make my PC better for my target task, but still having some confutation,

I JUST NEED YOUR RECOMMENDATION ABOUT WHICH "CPU" & "GPU" I NEED TO BYE.

the list is below

1__CPU: INTEL i7 3770k / AMD FX 8350 (I already checked this: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i7-3770K-vs-AMD-FX-8350-Black-Edition)

2__GPU: NVDIA GTX 660 / 670 / 550 or RADEON HD 7950

3__MOTHERBOARD: GA-Z77X-UP5 TH (for t7) or ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX/GEN3 R2.0 / MSI 990FXA-GD80V2 ( for FX 8530)
[PLEASE SUGGGEST ME IF THERE ANY BETTER MOTHERBOARD FOR THIS CHIPS BUT NEED PCI GEN 3.0 WHEN MY CARD (gtx660 /670 IS PCI 3.0 SUPPORTED)].

4__RAM: Not sure about brand but 8 GB 1600 mhz.

5__HDD/SSD: WD 2 TB black/blue [which is best?] for storage and may be 80 GB HDD / 128 GB SSD for OS & apps.

6__Powersupply: May be Thermaltek [what to see when buying a PSU ?]

7__Cooler: may be water cooler is not available in the local market so need to buy air cooler (may be this type of : http://www.hersheng.com/sites/default/files/iceedgemini%20a_0.jpg) like "DC-IceEdge Mini" [is this enough for i7 or FX when I want to overclock about to 4.7 ghz ?]

8__MONITOR: Just want a very good looking monitor with IPS panel and may be 21-24 inch.

So,
you know up mentioned is my listing to make a kick ass video editing machine (not want same as hp or dell work stations I know this is not that's like :( )

So, PLEASE GYES AND GALS PLS HELP ME CHOOSE WHICH CPU AND GPU i SHOULD CHOOSE FROM MY LISTING? IF YOU THINK ABOUT THE SAME AMOUNT $$ I CAN GET BETTER CPU/GPU THEN PLEASE SUGGEST ME THAT TOO.

Hope you understand I need to know first that which one is best for video editing: i7 3770k or FX 8350
&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
which card is best for (mainly 3D, I need to run after effects CS6 3D engine) video editing: GTX 660/670/550 or HD 7950
(you can suggest any under $350)

Then if you have time please suggest me more things that I asked upper.

Hope I will hear something tomorrow morning.
Thank you in advanced.

Answer
For video editing, the Core i7 3770K (and of course the GA-Z77X-UP5 motherboard)

The CPUBoss comparison is a little misleading. Just because AMD processors have a higher raw Ghz rating doesn't mean they're faster. Those numbers simply don't translate across different architectures- Intel CPUs are faster on a clock-for-clock basis. Even a 2.8Ghz Core i5 760 outperforms a 3.4Ghz Phenom II X4 965.

Let's look at real application performance instead:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/fx-8350-8320-6300-4300_7.html#sect0

Although the FX-8350 has more physical cores, Intel's more advanced and efficient core architecture emerges victorious in most instances. Moreover, the Core i7 & Z77 motherboard combination allows you to utilize Intel's proprietary Quick Sync, which was introduced with Sandy Bridge.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-review-intel-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/9

With the Ivy Bridge Core i7 3770K, Quick Sync is even better:

The GPU- that's an interesting choice. The Radeon HD 7950 is clearly the most powerful option, if you were building a gaming rig it's the slam-dunk winner.

But video editing doesn't require a really high-end graphics card, and there's generally more widespread support for Nvidia's CUDA than AMD's Stream among professional applications. So I might be tempted to go with the GTX 660 and save $100 to be used elsewhere in the build. I'm just not sure how much having the more powerful HD 7950 would really help what you're doing. If it turns out that Adobe's creative suite really benefits, then stick with the HD 7950 (or consider Nvidia's competing card the GTX 660 Ti, which is slightly less powerful)

An SSD would ONLY be useful as a boot drive. Due to the write cycle limit, SSDs are not well-suited to heavy-duty editing applications, and should NOT be used for temporary/scratch folders or your Windows paging file- that will shorten their lifespan.

Video editing goes more smoothly when your source and destination folders are on different physical drives, so no matter what I recommend dual HDDs of 1-2 TB capacity (even if that means skipping the SSD). Reducing your Windows startup time is less important than reducing encoding times.

On the PSU, definitely NOT Thermaltake. They're a mediocre brand when it comes to power supplies- some good units, some bad ones. Thermaltake and Cooler Master are hit-and-miss in the PSU department, they aren't elite brands like Corsair, Seasonic, Antec, XFX, Enermax, and Silverstone.

Here's a review of Thermaltake's TR2 RX 750W. Feel free to go through the whole thing but I'll just link the conclusion page. In a nutshell- avoid the TR2 line.

For a CPU cooler, look for a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - it's the best bang/buck air cooler on the market.

Here's the head-to-head comparison between those two CPUs:

What Laptop is Best for Video Editing?

Sir_Knows_

I'm becoming more and more interested in video editing, so I personally would like to get a laptop(no matter what the price) that would both perform great for video editing and also for everyday needs(internet and typing). Any brand of laptop would be great! Thanks!

Answer
Buying a laptop is a complicated decision which will probably affect you daily for the next few years.

In addition to price and specs, you want to consider things such as ease-of-use, speed, reliability, stylish-design and tech-support.

Different people would have different opinions.

Therefore, I would recommend you to check ProCompare.com (http://www.procompare.com/top/Notebooks). They have a recommendation engine that ranks laptops and other tech products based on ratings and reviews from a community of trusted IT professionals. They also have a cool personalization slider that lets you personalize the results based on the criteria that are most important to YOU.

Hope you'll find this answer useful...
