The second tier 13 inch or the first tier 15 inch.

I'm going to be taking it to school almost every single day. I will be watching videos, using internet, writing essays, etc, as well as video/photo processing, editing, creating projects, coding/programming etc.
-OR-
Should I just wait for the new 2012 MacBook Pro?

Answer
Here is all the details about MacBook Pro.
Their prices are a rape of their customers and for programming and coding they're based on systems only compatible to Apple where most of the world has Windows systems and whatever projects you do will need conversion. The have really low end CPU and graphics chips for the price. I have to assume that either your parents are loaded and don't give a darn or know anything about computers or that you have money to burn. You might as well wait to see what Apple does with their next generation and if you were smart you won't buy them either. You can buy good video editing software for a Windows PC and have money left over.
Here is where you decode the secret CPUs they use and where to compare CPU+Graphics chips:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacBook_Pro
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php
On the 13" it is only Intel HD graphics like any $500 laptop and the 15" base model is only HD 6750M and it costs $200 to raise it to 8GB unless you do it yourself by selling the 2GB cards they use and putting in 2x4GB for about $65.
They have decent batteries, but ignore the "up to hours" as meaningless on all laptops.
As an example of a good laptop,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152339
MSI G Series GE600NC-006US Intel Core i7 3610QM(2.30GHz) 15.6" 6GB Memory 750GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M for $1110
Picture isn't available yet but it is black and red like may MSI
The Ivy Bridge i7 3610QM has passmark score 8079. Top end option MacPro is 2.5 GHz (2860QM) 8002. The HDD in the MSI is a $150 option at Apple. 6GB RAM instead of 4GB in the Apples. The new GT 650M http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-650M.71887.0.html
is an upgrade from GTX 560M so graphics chip scores over 1265 points where the Apple 15" base is only HD 6750M 1131 points so to beat the MSI need the high end Mac on graphics and it is only slightly higher with HD 6770M. The MSI has HDMI and USB 3.0 instead of a useless Thunderbolt port and a dongle from Apple. The MSI is a 1920 x 1080 screen and weighs 5.28 lbs. The Mac only goes as option to 1680-by-1050 for another $100 as a lower res. It weighs 5.6 pounds. Wireless is better on the MSI. MSI shows 4 speakers. Only minus on the MSI is that it is thicker and battery life is shorter but not by much with both running on Intel graphics which is the new Intel HD 4000 on the MSI vs HD 3000 on the Apple.
Have to be nuts to get the inferior Apple for over $700 premium in price.

Now, you can all thumbs down me and pick some other dupe for Best Answer that likes to pay double price on an Apple. I only showed 1 good system. There are plenty more.
Will add that MSI is a designer and manufacturer. Apple is a reseller of whatever contract manufacturer is doing the hardware. Their iPhones are Foxconn, but not sure who does the MacBooks for them.
Add: For $2834 you can option up a MacPro 15 slightly better than the MSI being thinner with a better battery and an extra 2GB RAM, but not quite as good a diplay and a dongle for HDMI and no USB 3.0 ports, but it is a hair better. at $1724 more money.

Should I Get: Macbook Air 11" 2012 OR HP Envy x2?

Kt Smurfy

Ok, so. I am not too concerned about price as I have a job which is uite well earning for my age. I am looking for a reliable, fairly heavy duty PC (mainly for use during my GSCEs, A Levels and starter college or Uni years) in which I can browse, create a word document, watch videos/stream music and edit photos at the same time. So basically I am looking for a good processor and a NOT SLUGGISH browser.
Would appreciate some friendly advice, preferably from someone who knows the two laptops or is fairly well informed on computing!
Thanks ;)

Ok, so I need a laptop for video editing for school, but I don't know which one to get. I need one with at least 2.4GHz, something with a RAM higher than 1.00 GB, and lots of memory. Please don't say "Don't get laptops, get a desktop..." because I already have a desktop great for video editing and now I need a laptop.
Please help.

Answer
Well.. this could help you narrow down your choices..

Get a laptop with a dual core processor that rates at least the speed you want there.
Get a laptop that has a video card with dedicated video memory, as opposed to one that uses shared video memory.

Now. I know you can read. You posted the question here. You know that 2.4ghz something means something, and you know how to spot that. You know how to spot RAM and the numbers that will be around it.

You are perfectly capable of looking YOURSELF for what you want. Why? Because any laptop you look at, will list it's processor speed (that 2.4ghz thingy), how much RAM it has (Yep... RAM=RAM. No big geek translator needed there) and more.

In short, if you want to act as knowledgeable as you are trying (I don't need a desktop for actual computing power. Got one. I want a laptop as powerful and versatile as a desktop. I just don't want to take the time to learn what "powerful" means) then start looking yourself.

Prepare to be disappointed. Few laptops are made to the specifications you are expecting (made for video editing in mind), and the ones that are, are not cheap.

Maybe you should look at a Sager. Completely custom laptops.
http://www.sagernotebook.com/default.php Go ahead and build yourself one there online. See how much it costs. Oh, and if you don't know what all these options and doodads and numbers mean... isn't it time you learned?

which dell laptop is best for video editing and graphics purpose?

Suman

I am searching a laptop for video editing and graphics job. Also i want to do compilation of software and web development job through laptop. I need a such type of laptop of DELL company. Thank you.

Answer
Hi Suman,

As you want to use the system for video editing and graphics intensive applications, I would suggest that you order a system with discrete video card, or better still, one with NVidia Optimus or AMD Switchable Graphics technology, that can utilize both integrated and discrete Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). This would allow you to use the discrete GPU for graphic intensive applications and integrated one for normal use to save power. The system should also have a good processor and maximum possible memory.

As you would be using the system for work, getting a Solid State Drive (SSD) instead of a regular hard drive would also be a great idea. SSD does not have moving parts like a conventional hard drive, and therefore, is less prone to failure, providing better data safety.

A custom configured Dell XPS would be my choice for the job. You may look for, customize and order a Dell laptop on the following link:

Hope this helps.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I haven't used anything but Mac for over three years. I know Toshiba makes a decent laptop but what about these Samsung laptops? What are the top PC brands for laptops these days? I do a lot of video editing (hobby) so I need at least 6GB Memory to handle HD video. I have a 2TB external Hard Drive so the hard drive space on the computer doesn't need to be enormous. Any suggestions and links?
Not looking to spend more than like $800 for a laptop.

Answer
I found some and you can choose any one from these. I would recommend getting you HP Pavilion DV8 but I guess HP aren't making laptops anymore(rumor). Toshiba laptops are okay but the model of most of those looks pale and almost same. I don't have any experience with Samsung Laptop so I have no idea about it. However my friend has some Samsung Netbook and it is working flawless since a year. Asus laptops are #1 selling on most of the countries according to the internet and provided data from the sellers. They also make awesome ones. My wife has Asus Republic Of Gamers laptop and it can handle any games and applications along with multitasking without any lag.

What are the minimum computer requirements to edit gopro footage and HD videos with 1080p and some in 60fps?

David euro

If I was to go to newegg or bestbuy right now and buy myself a laptop, whats the cheapest that i could pay and still get a decent laptop for editing videos that it would be able to handle? My current computer sucks. Whenever i try to edit my footage the quality of the video goes down the drain. Like when viewing my footage it looks smooth and clear but whenever i try to make a compilation or just reduce video size on sony vegas the quality of the video goes down to very low. With technology changing very fast I'm sure I don't have to dish out a grand for a laptop capable of making gopro edits. If you guys can throw out some numbers and averages that would help. Thanks!

Answer
You need a good CPU for editing videos properly... Go for an i7 and at least 8gb of ram...
You can get 16GB too and use 8 as a RAM Disk.
To improve performance, get an SSD.
For editing videos, the CPU plays the biggest part...
Technology changes fast but you don't have to buy it every time it changes... wait until the performance boost makes a difference.
Now go check the prices, looking for an i7 if you can afford it, if not, look for an i5.

What Jello said isn't right.
Those specs are in order to Handle the video... to be able to play it... Editing and converting is a whole different thing.
Good luck!

Answer
WinZip is a file archiver and compressor for Microsoft Windows, developed by WinZip Computing (formerly Nico Mak Computing). It natively uses the PKZIP format but also has various levels of support for other archive formats.
WinZip was created in the early 1990s as a shareware GUI front-end for PKZIP. Sometime around 1996 the creators of WinZip incorporated compression code from the Info-ZIP project, thus eliminating the need for the PKZIP executable to be present.
From version 6.0 until version 9.0, registered users could download the newest versions of the software, enter their original registration information, and thereby obtain a free upgrade. As of version 10.0 this upgrade scheme was discontinued.[1] WinZip is available in standard and professional versions.
In May 2006, Corel Corporation, known for its WordPerfect and CorelDRAW product lines, announced that it had completed acquisition of WinZip Computing.[2]
WinZip has a 45-day free evaluation period. However, in some versions it continues to work even after this period of time.
WinZip is a compression program for Microsoft Windows. You use it for .zip files, or to make them.
Creation, addition, extraction from ZIP archives.
Configurable Microsoft Windows Shell integration.
128- and 256-bit key AES encryption.[3] This has replaced the less secure PKZIP 2.0 encryption method used in earlier versions. The implementation, using Brian Gladman's code, was FIPS-197 certified, on March 27, 2003.[4]
Version 9 also implemented a 64-bit version of the PKZIP file format, eliminating both the maximum limit of 65,535 members for single archive and the 4-gibibyte size limit on either the archive and each member file.
Support of the bzip2 and the PPMd compression algorithms, allowing smaller archives at the cost of a potential increase in compression and extraction times (especially when using PPMd).
Decompression of .bz2 and .rar files, and special algorithm for audio files (based on WavPack).
Support for ARC, ARJ, LHA archives if suitable external programs are installed.
Direct write of ZIP archives to CD/DVD
Automation of backup jobs
Integrated FTP upload
Email ZIP archives
WinZip does not support Unicode characters in filenames.[5] [6] Attempting to add these files to an archive results in the error message "Warning: Could not open for reading: ..."

[edit] History
The ZIP file archive format (PKZIP) was originally invented for MS-DOS in 1989 by Phil Katz and his company PKWare[7].
Because PKWare did not protect the name by trademark and algorithm of the process by patent, and was slow to realize that the Windows operating systems would eventually dominate the OS market, WinZip Computing Inc. eventually seized the opportunity and released the WinZip application for Microsoft Windows.

A password is a form of secret authentication data that is used to control access to a resource. The password is kept secret from those not allowed access, and those wishing to gain access are tested on whether or not they know the password and are granted or denied access accordingly.

The use of passwords goes back to ancient times. Sentries guarding a location would challenge for a password. They would only allow a person in if they knew the password. In modern times, passwords are used to control access to protected computer operating systems, mobile phones, cable TV decoders, automated teller machines (ATMs), etc. A typical computer user may require passwords for many purposes: logging in to computer accounts, retrieving email from servers, accessing files, databases, networks, web sites, and even reading the morning newspaper online.

Despite the name, there is no need for passwords to be actual words; indeed passwords which are not actual words are harder to guess (a desirable property), but are generally harder for users to remember (an undesirable property). Note that password is often used to describe what would be more accurately called a passphrase. Passcode is sometimes taken to imply that the information used is purely numeric, such as the personal identification number (PIN) commonly used for ATM access. Passwords are generally short enough to be memorized.
The rate at which an attacker can submit guessed passwords to the system is a key factor in determining system security. Some systems impose a long time out (several seconds) after a small number (e.g., a maximum of three) of failed password entry attempts. Absent other vulnerabilities, such systems can be secure with relatively simple passwords, if they are not easily guessed. Examples of passwords that are easily guessed include the name of a relative or pet, an automobile license plate number, and such default passwords as admin, 123456, or letmein. [1]

Other systems store or transmit a cryptographic hash of the password in a manner that makes the hash value accessible to an attacker. When this is done, and it is very common (to most observers' surprise or despair), an attacker can work off-line, rapidly testing candidate passwords against the true password's hash value.

Lists of common passwords are widely available and can further speed the process. (See Password cracking.) A sufficiently complex password used in a system with a good hash algorithm can defeat such attacks as the work factor imposed on such an attacker can be made impossible in practice. Passwords that are used to generate cryptographic keys, e.g. for disk encryption or Wi-Fi security, are also subject to high rate guessing. Stronger passwords are needed in such systems
Common techniques used to improve the security of software systems protected by a password include:

not echoing the password on the display screen as it is being entered or obscuring it as it is typed by using asterisks or circular blobs
allowing passwords of adequate length (some Unix systems limited passwords to 8 characters).
requiring users to re-enter their password after a period of inactivity
enforcing a password policy to ensure strong passwords
requiring periodic password changes
assigning passwords at random
providing an alternative to keyboard entry
using encrypted tunnels or password-authenticated key agreement to prevent network attacks on transmitted passwords
Some of the more stringent policy enforcement measures can pose a risk of alienating users, possibly decreasing security.

iTunes video ( i have it in MP4 but wont show up)?

Deniz Hurl

OK i bought the Transformers DVD yesterday thinking that i could watch it on the plane (iPod Touch) i have tommorow i converted it into MP4 but when i add it nothing happens... the add file screen just turns off and im back to square one

Answer
Tagged error, ipod, itunes, mp4, quicktime, vista
iTunes seems to be having a problem with adding new mp4 videos to libary. The problem seems to be with computers running vista generally.

You add the file and nothing happens or shows up after that. When you play the video using Quicktime it shows the âError - 2002: a bad public movie atom was found in the movieâ. The video play perfectly on any other media player with the right codecs.

The problems happens as a collabration of Quicktime, iTunes and Vista (also XP in some cases), how the three of them deal with the ID3 tags in the mp4 file.

So hereâs a workaround that seems to be working for me. If youâre having this same problem and this works for you, please leave a comment so Iâll know that Iâve really solved the generic problem and not just some strange situation on my computer.

Step 1: Grab the Tagger software (main site) (and make sure you have a current JRE installed)

Step 2: After unzipping/untarring the software, double-click on the executable JAR file âtagger.jarâ

Step 3: Use the âFile | Openâ menu option to open the MP4 you are having trouble importing into iTunes.

Step 4: Edit one or more of the tags using the Tagger software and click SAVE. (keep tags short)

Step 5: After Tagger finishes writing the new file with the new tags, add the file to iTunes like you normally would.

I don't want to let them down again. I just need a video editing software that's actually good and that's free. Please help, it'd be much appreciated.

Answer
Lightworks; free alternative to Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas.
http://lwks.com

Lightworks has been used in the movie industry for more than 20 years. Lightworks also has the fastest workflow in the industry.

Lightworks used to cost more than $1000, but now Lightworks Pro costs $60/year and you can download a free version from their website.

Sony Vegas costs $600 and that's the same price as using Lightworks Pro for 10 years.

Editors using Lightworks have produced numerous internationally renowned and Oscar and Emmy award-winning feature films and television programs, including The King's Speech, The Departed, Mission Impossible, Braveheart, and Pulp Fiction.

And yes! Lightworks is FREE if you don't need pro video codecs and you can use the free version as long as you want.

What camera would anybody reccomend to use in a short low budget documentary?

VCity

I plan on starting a documentary in June and I am brand new to the filming business. I would like any suggestions on what camera or video recorder would be suffice and also what video editing software is reccomendable..

Thanks.

Answer
VCity, since you are "brand new to the filming business," I'll let you in on some little secrets...

1.--Video and film are not the same thing.

2.--Professionals don't buy their own cameras for projects unless they are videographers, they rent equipment and hire crews who know how to use it properly. Everyone has a specialized role so that each aspect of production is carried out as best as possible. This also stops people who only shoot one or two things a year from wasting their money on thousands of dollars of equipment that will be obsolete in a few years.

If you don't have any ideas on what camera(s,) lenses, lights, mic's, support, editing etc, you will need for your documentary, this indicates to me that you are not the person who should be making those decisions, nor should random people from the internet be determining this for your project.

Research some local video production companies and discusss your project with them. Expect fees to start at $1000 per full day of shooting for absolute minimal equipment and crew.

If you are still set on purchasing your own equipment, at least take a couple courses in basic video production before simply buying a camera and thinking you can make a watchable documentary. I mean, maybe you can and I'm just being cynical but after working in the industry for nearly 10 years, I've not met many people who can.

What I see more of are the terrible, barely audible, shaky, poorly focused/exposed footage of people who had a good idea but were in too much of a hurry that they now cannot really spread the word of their idea because nobody wants to watch their "low budget documentary."

Good luck with your project. Give it all the effort your idea deserves.

Hi i am looking to get my 10th grade son a macbook for his bday/christmas. He has a dell desktop right now but he has had it for 7-8 yrs and think he needs an upgrade b4 college. What should we get him thats not over the top in price but will have everything he needs for school. It needs to be a laptop also!

Answer
Auggie: Don't listen and read garbage that has no grounds. One the article doesn't have any links its just hear say. I can disprove every answer he said. So lets begin.

1. "Macs run on OS X. They recently because popular in the last two years because of Windows Vista but they have limited capabilites. Macs are not good for gaming, mulimedia, or watching movies."

My Reply. Mac OS X can run both Windows via boot camp or a OS Simulator= VMWare Fusion, Parallels, etc. So you can have the best of both worlds in one unit. Second look at the Media (CNN,FOX,etc even Hollywood) They use Macs because they are great for Multi Media. They were made for Photo and Video Editing. Also Anyone ever hear of iPod and iTunes. Great for Music. Granted if you want a gaming PC a Mac isn't for you. But for everything else its great.

2. "Macs BIOS is confusing, it is not typed correctly and therefor makes the system sluggish in other areas."

My Reply. Macs Start up and Read Hard Drives 10x Faster than a Windows machine. Macs don't have Registry,DLLs, etc. They hardly crash if ever. This guy has no knowledge. He sounds like a fool for even answering a Tech Question.

3. "According to Apples commerial, Macs don't get viruses. Oh really? A test conducted by PC magazine comfirmed that owners of Macs were MORE likely to get viruses than PCs because the people who created viruses for Macs had less targets, so the people with Macs were easy to target. Not to mention since Apple thought that Macs were immune to viruses [big mistake] they never made an option for virus protection like McAfee or Norton to come installed or even BE installed."

My Reply. This is another sad case of ignorance. One every time Apple sees a threat they release a patch. Microsoft has released God knows how many patches just for its Internet Explorer 8. Also Ever hear of the Conflicter worm. Macs do have Security obviously this proves he is a moron saying they never created it. He sounds like a Microsoft Employee trying to tarnish Apple. I'll even include link to the Suite.

4. "I've also heard the story that Macs are more durable than PCs. Really?! Well it's not true, they just simply lie to get people. Macs and PCs both use the same casing, the same hardware; so you make be asking me whats the difference? Well, its the OS; and that has no affect on a computer lifetime, its just how you treat your PC/Mac."

My Reply. Once again what a fool. Macs use Aluminum Dell Uses Plastic. Last time I checked Aluminum is a solid metal. So how can you compare durability. Also Windows uses a traditional old Trackpad made of 2 buttons and plastic. Macs have Glass Trackpads, Multi-Finger Gestures, Back-lit keyboards, Built-in Webcams,Mic, How can that even match to a cheap plastic windows machine.

Also just to point out how inexperienced he is. He calls a Windows Machine a PC VS. Mac. The only reason they use the term Mac VS. PC is because its better than saying "Hi I'm a Mac and I'm a Window" If you look at the definition of a PC its a Computer which both Macs and Windows are. The Difference in the Name is the OS/Software.

PS: Stop Crying that Macs are Expensive they lowered the price. Look at the website. They have better deals then some other makers like Toshiba, Sony, and Dell. And Those Customer Service Agents Suck. Apple was rated #1.

I Suggest you get him the Base 13" MacBook Pro. Its got better Specs, all good features, and its Brand New its going to last him through College/University so you won't have to worry about it. They are also upgradable. They can have up to 8 GB of Ram and 500 GB Hard Drives. Have 8 Hour battery life which will last him an entire school day on a single charge. 10X More battery life compared to other Makers. I'll include link to the MacBook Pro so you can see for yourself.

By the way I own both Windows and Macs. I use both equally. Sometimes I use a Mac more mainly because of the editing I can do. Also its much more portable to take.

If you have any other questions feel free to contact me.

What is the Best Video Editing Software for under $150?

James F

I have narrowed down my choices to four:
*Adobe Premiere Elements 4
*Vegas Movie Studio Platinum Edition
*Pinnacle Studio Ultimate 11
*Ulead Video Studio 11.5 plus

I don't mind if the User Interface is horrible, I am just looking for the most powerful and professional of these programs, ie which one has the mostfeatures . Any help?????Thanks to all!!

Answer
i would say it would be adobe premiere elements.

pc magazine claimed that it is the "best editing/authoring combination on the planet for home and novice business video producers"

it was given a "Superior" rating at PC World with a score of 90/100.

CNET gave this software a 7.8/10 compared to 7.0 to ulead and 7.7 to pinnacle.

in finding the best video editing software of your choice, you must also search multiple reviews not only one.

video editing software free trial image

Smile 221b

I'm looking for a free video editing software that is not a free trial. I also would like it to have a substantial amount of video effects. For example: crossover transition, fading out, speed change, color change, cropping, etc. The reason I'm looking for one is because I've been using Video Pad but now my trial is ending. If you have other good free editing software's that are only trials for a month or so, that's alright, just say that they are trials in your answer. Thank you! :)

Answer
There are some very good free editors...

Take a look at the tutorials for Windows Movie Maker at http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Tutorials/ - it may be WMM is all you need.

The version 2 series were probably the most versatile, you can find them here - http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/windows-movie-maker.html but you may have problems installing them on Windows 7

Other free video editors are...

Wax - http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ - this is also a compositor - a bit like Adobe's After Effects
VideoLAN Movie Creator - http://www.videolan.org/vlmc/
TrakAxPC - http://www.trakax.com/software/pc/
VideoSpin - http://www.videospin.com/
VideoPad - the free version - http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/
Lightworks - http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ - I like this one
Serif MoviePlus - http://serif.com/free-video-editing-software/
Ezvid - http://www.ezvid.com/

VirtualDub, RAD Video tools, AVITricks and Avidemux are also good tools you should look at. Although not full editors like the others they have some useful features.

Lightworks and Wax together are a very good video editing system for free.

All are safe, at least from the sites I've linked to.

What are some really good video editing programs for free?

LexieStar9

I make youtube videos and I need a really good, free, video editing software that I can download to my windows computer. I used Video Pad and that was perfect but my trial is up. Please get back to me as soon as possible. Thank you!

Answer
Windows Movie Maker is better than most people give it credit. Version 2.6 was probably the best, or at least the most configurable and you can get it here - http://www.brothersoft.com/downloads/windows-movie-maker.html

For a comparison of the different versions see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Movie_Maker

Take a look at some of the tutorials at http://www.windowsmoviemakers.net/Tutorials/

If you don't want to use WMM then you've still got quite a choice...

Wax - http://www.debugmode.com/wax/ - this is also a compositor - a bit like Adobe's After Effects
Zwei-Stein - http://www.thugsatbay.com/tab/?q=zweistein - it's good but their interface is simply awful
TrakAxPC - http://www.trakax.com/software/pc/
VideoSpin - http://www.videospin.com/
VideoPad - the free version - http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/
Lightworks - http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ - I like this one

VirtualDub, RAD Video tools, AVITricks and Avidemux are also good tools you should look at. Although not full editors like the others they have some useful features.

Lightworks and Wax together are a good video editing system for free.

Curiosity

I have a Jazz HDV189 camera and whenever I make a video on it, it doesn't save as a video when I go to upload it to my computer (a Toshiba laptop). It always saves as a picture, and so when I go to edit it on Windows Movie Maker (and it doesn't work with Windows Live Movie Maker either), it doesn't recognize it as a video file. Is there something that I can change in the settings so that my videos save as video files? Thanks so much in advance!

I also tried putting the memory card directly in the laptop and it still saves as a picture.

Answer
Hi Ms."Curiosity":

First, your Jazz camcorder saves videos (at least the HD ones) in MPEG AVC/H.264 file format (probably with an .MP4 file extension) that most Movie Maker versions don't support (they won't "see" them as videos).

The quickest and cheapest solution is to download Real Network's RealPlayer software which includes the free RealPlayer Converter (and RealPlayer Trimmer), which can directly handle your videos and transcode (convert) them to WMV format, which Windows Movie Maker can edit. (And you can use RealPlayer itself just to view your video files without transcoding.)

Here's the link for Real Network's download page: http://www.real.com/download

There was also a software CD that came with your Jazz camcorder that probably has some simple Media Import & Editing software to help with proper file transfer to your PC. You might dig up that CD and install the software on your computer.

And if your Toshiba is running either Windows Vista, Win7 or Win8, then you either have or can download from Microsoft the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, which can directly handle H.264 (MP4) video files. It's part of the new "Windows Essentials" free download at Microsoft.com.

Hope this helps,

Custom built AlienWare laptop over a MacBook Pro for productivity?

Cesar_17_

So what's best for video editing? AlienWare M14x Custom with 12GB Ram, and a i-7 3rd gen dual cpu at 3.7GHZ with turbo boost 2.0, bluray, etc. or that $1500 macbook pro 13 inch high end 2012? Both will run for around $1800 at the end, bu ti need something decent and good for video editing. It needs to last my last 2 years of high school and my next 3-4 years of college as i plan to major on Video Editing.

Answer
macs are always good for editing due to their os, yet their software isnt always the most up to date, and 13" is a small screen to be editing on. I would go with the alienware, being that it has the 3rd gen cpu which has a gpu enhancer built into it, and plenty of RAM. I would go the alien way simply because with apply you are really paying for the brand and not the components. I currently have a lenovo y580 which has the 3rd gen CPU and 8gb of Ram and it will run literrly anything I throw at it. With Video editing you want to look for the GPU and the CPU. Being that it is alienware you will have both of thoes. I sound bias agains apple but that is just my honest opinion. If you have any other questions be sure to message me.

Answer
You may use the best software I have seen AVS Video Tools. It can convert to/from all key format, upload video or DVD directly to key portables like iPod, Sony PSP, Archos, Zen Creative, and mobiles.

It can capture video from DV or webcams, TV tuners, DVB-T, DVB-S, transfer VHS tapes to DVD, remove commercials, edit video, copy and burn DVDs and video files: AVI (DivX, XviD, etc.), MP4, WMV, 3GP, 3G2, QuickTime (MOV, QT), SWF, DVD, VOB, VRO, MPEG 1,2,4, MPG, DAT, VCD, SVCD, ASF, H.263, H.264, RM, DVR-MS.

What is a good free video editing software?

Xavier

I am currently using windows movie maker. Are there any other good free video editing software out there??

Answer
These two programs are light years ahead of Windows Movie Maker, in Video Editing Abilities. Takes a bit of work, but they are free.

Pinnacle Studio 14 HD Ultimate & Sony Vegas Pro 10

Screen Shot - http://asimplelife.ca/nle.html Upgrade your computer to AVCHD specs below and you can run both programs seen on my Web Page on your computer. Just Rejig the search term below in the YouTube search, from the instructions below.

This is not a program that can run on any computer, see below -

Minimum System Requirements

Windows® 7, Windows Vista® (SP2), or Windows XP (SP3)
Intel® Pentium® or AMD Athlon⢠1.8 GHz (2.4 GHz or higher recommended)
-Intel Core⢠2 Duo 2.4 GHz required for AVCHD*
-Intel Core⢠2 Quad 2.66 GHz or Intel Core i7 required for
AVCHD* 1920
1 GB system memory recommended, 2 GB required for AVCHD*
DirectX® 9 or 10 compatible graphics card with 64 MB (128 MB or higher recommended)
-256 MB required for HD and AVCHD*
DirectX 9 (or higher) compatible sound card
3.8 GB of disk space
DVD-ROM drive to install software

Import Formats

⢠Video: AVCHD*, AVCHD Lite*, BD Blu-ray*, DV, HDV, AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, DivX®*, MPEG-4*, 3GP (MPEG-4)*, WMV, non-encrypted DVD titles (incl. DVD-VR/+VR), QuickTime® MOV (DV, MPEG-4*, H.264*), DivX Plus® MKV*
⢠Audio: MP3, MPA, WAV, AC3*, WMA
⢠Graphic: BMP, GIF, JPG, PCX, PSD, TGA, TIF, WMF, PNG, J2K

If interested, links below takes you to the sites, but you can get these two programs for free. Do this by opening a web browser, surfing over to YouTube. Once there, in the search box on that site, enter 'Pinnacle Studio 14' or âSony Vegas Pro 10â. Youâre looking for free download, find a link or video that says that, in the video description, there will be link for a free download. Make sure, before you do this, to make sure your computer can meet or exceed those Specs above, and pay special attention to the AVCHD specs if you have or are going to get a HD camcorder.

A laptop running these Programs, when rendering say a 10 minute Video out, be prepared, render times could leave your laptop useless, while rendering for 4 or 5 days on that file. Besides you cannot upgrade a Laptop this way, so it unlikely these program will run on most Laptops.

Kippy

I've had two HP Windows laptops by now, and I've liked them for the general interface, and the keyboard as compared to most other computers. However, they have both been extremely problematic, and have caused me much frustration, as I'm sure many HP owners can attest.

At this point in my life, I need a computer that meets my expectations. I'd appreciate product suggestions tailored as close to the following as possible:

-It needs to be able to handle having numerous big programs installed, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe Flash, various art programs, video-editing software, and 3D graphics/modeling programs; as well as any add-ons/brushes/models/etc. I usually need to have two or more of these programs open at once.

-It needs to be able to handle 3D games (smoothly, no 'skippy' speed quality), and any mods I might like to download.

-I've dealt with slow-processing, freezing, aggravating computers for far too many years now, so I'd like a fast computer at this point. Fast downloading speed included.

-It needs to have a lot of storage space.

-It should be able to handle running the internet at a good speed. I use Google Chrome and I usually need several tabs open, so I'd like it to be able to compensate for that.

-It needs a DVD/CD drive, a few USB ports, and a port for camera memory cards.

-The DVD/CD drive should be able to burn DVDs and CDs.

-I need to be able to connect my Wacom Bamboo Pen tablet.

-It does need to be a laptop. I don't need to travel everywhere with it, but I do sit at various places in my house with my computer, and sometimes take it to work or on the very rare vacation, so it can't be immobile.

-Size isn't all that crucial, but medium-sized would be preferred.

-I need it to run Windows; I have several purchased programs for Windows, and it would be a huge waste to have to get replacements for an incompatible system.

-It needs to be reliable, I'm sick of being hindered by constant technical problems.

-Finally, I'd really prefer not to spend over $1000.

Thanks in advance :)
When I say '3D modelling', I don't mean anything fancy, as I'm no expert in that field. I just need a computer that can handle simple 3D modelling software like Blender and Sketchup without freezing up.

Answer
One of the best choices available right now is the Lenovo IdeaPad Y500.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 should be plenty satisfactory in terms of your performance needs. For gaming, the NVIDIA GT 750M is pretty much right up at the top as far as GPUs go for under $1000. For video editing and other CPU-intensive software, you aren't really going to do better than what the Y500 has to offer either.

But performance isn't everything. Another key aspect is the display. Working with graphical software warrants particular concern for the display, but the display is a concern in general. The display is key in that once you start getting into price ranges where it is reasonable to get a decent display, you want to try to get a decent display. The difference between displays is one of the things that makes the most difference, because it literally affects everything you do. For example, 15.6" 1920x1080 displays, you'll find, are great in that the resolution lets you fit a lot onscreen, and in that they tend to be decent quality LCD panels with good colors/contrast. But it's not just about how good displays like that are, it's also about how bad other types of displays are. On the other hand, 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" display makes things onscreen large, and 15.6" displays that have 1366x768 resolution tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast.

**Lenovo IdeaPad Y500 750M** (**NVIDIA GT 750M**, **15.6" 1920x1080 matte display**, i7-3630QM) - **$809**
- Sign up and sign in here: http://shoplenovo.i2.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/na/StdAffinityPortal/en_US/Lenovo:EnterStdAffinity?affinity=barnesnoblegold (Barnes and Noble Gold discount page)

- Or this model: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/barnesnoblegold/StdAffinityPortal/en_US/config.workflow:ConfigureMtmAsItem?mtm-item=:000001C9:0000C50B:&category-id=5B0116E237099FA0FCA012D9B20ED2FB ($879: Bumps up the memory, and adds a small SSD for hard-drive cache to speed up access to commonly-used data)
- Click the activate coupon button in the cart.
- Note that the GT 650M included in certain other variants (except for the models that come with 2x/SLI GT 650Ms) is a bit behind the GT 750M.
- Avoid any variants/models that come with the 1366x768 display instead of the 1920x1080 display. 1366x768 resolution in a 15.6" display makes things onscreen large, and 15.6" displays that have 1366x768 resolution tend to be low-grade LCD panels with very poor image quality due to low contrast. You should make a point to avoid displays like this when it is reasonable to do so, unless you require the larger text for eyesight-related reasons.

What is the BEST video editing free software?

AmberStar0

what is a good or the best video editing software for free?

Answer
Well, it depends on what type of computer you have. I personally have a Mac, and I use iMovie (and I bought final cut pro 7). iMovie is really good, as far as free video editing systems go. It automatically has it if you have leopard or snow leopard or something.

If you have a windows, it automatically comes with Windows Movie Maker. That's okay, but it doesn't have many options. I also have an HP computer, but it's old, and I downloaded a trial of Sony Vegas Pro for a month. It was amazing & I loved it!

Don't download anything that isn't legit, the CNet website has viruses on it, even if it says it doesn't. I know that from experience.

Good luck!

Are netbooks a good mobile substitute for a desktop computer?

Detroit

I currently do a lot of movie editing for a advertising company part-time and I primarily use my HP Core i7 desktop at home for that but I am starting school now and as a result I will be away from home more often and need a mobile computer to do some of the work while I'm away.

I was thinking of getting one of those $300 netbooks with Intel Atom processors and upgrading to 4 GB of RAM? Is that enough to edit videos? I use Sony Vegas pro mostly?

Answer
Not, netbooks are not a good replacement for a desktop or laptop computer. Netbooks are good for basic document editing, taking meeting notes, and basic web browsing.

I don't know movie editing software: does it make heavy use of the GPU or does it rely upon the CPU?

If it relies upon the CPU, then a good, higher-end laptop should do you fine. If it makes use of the GPU, then consider a "gaming laptop" as that will have the additional power you need to be productive.

Take a look at these rankings:
http://blog.laptopmag.com/best-worst-notebook-brands-2013/3

Here are some gaming laptops:
http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/landing_pages/ideapad/gaming-pcs
http://www.asus.com/us/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/Gaming_Products/

Lenovo, Asus, HP, and Samsung are the top 4 laptop brands. I wouldn't consider any other brands.

Dell makes Alienware and they are not worth the money charged.
Acer makes Gateway. You'd have to pay me to use one of their machines.
Sony hardware has generally been good, but they are notorious for putting huge amounts of crapware/bloatware on machines and gathering information on their consumers without their knowledge or permission.
Toshiba has bottomed the rankings. Personally, I have used them and never had a problem, but that does not appear to be the case any more.

Answer
Heya Sarah,

Check out trakAxPC Pro. It's a cool editing software that allows you to edit and mix any combination of audio, video and photos. You can do effects, split screen, reverse, slow-motion etc, plus upload your video directly to YouTube through the application. There's a free and paid version available.

You can check it out here: http://www.trakax.com

Hope this helps

What is an easy to learn free downloadable video editing software?

I tried searching for softwares to create this movie slideshow but didnt get a good one. They are either trial versions where the movie created bears a watermark of the software or not with many features. Just basic.
What I need is a freely available, easy to use, good featured video editing software.
If anyone could suggest one, help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Here I highly recommend iPixSoft Video Slideshow Maker which help you make such slideshow from pictures and music in minutes and publish video, swf, exe, screensaver or share online with friends and family easily.
If you would like to upload it to Youtube,Yahoo Video,Myspace Video or other video websites, simply publish mp4 video format and upload to your Youtube account. It is very easy and you did not need any crazy skillz.
It is a real powerful software,I hope you will enjoy it.
