I am a high school student, and need office for my mac laptop; all I need is Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. I would really love to spend the minimum amount on it. What program would be the best for me to purchase? Thanks!

Answer
"all I need is Word, Excel, and Powerpoint."

Funny, because, well, that is Office. That is it, those three... unless you think you might need their groovy email app.

For a Mac OS system, you have these options:
â You can open and edit .DOC or .DOCX files in TextEdit. You can also create reasonably good .DOC files with TextEdit. It lacks some of the more exacting formatting options found in the other choices below.
â MS Office 2011 (for OS 10.5.8 or later). About US$130.
â Apple's Pages that is like Word, and Keynote that is like PowerPoint. Each US$19.99, click the App Store on the Dock.
â NeoOffice, newest version US$10, last year's version free. Some people use OpenOffice or LibreOffice, but they are lesser cousins to NeoOffice.
â http://Docs.google.com or other online office editors.

{NeoOffice is the direct Mac development of OpenOffice and LibreOffice, and thus has a better interface, smaller size, and better highlighting appearance. Most people learn about OpenOffice from PC use, but they don't know there is a better free version for OS X.}

COMPATIBILITY:
â MS Office 2011 can edit and save any office document.
â Apple's Pages / Keynote / Numbers (sold separately) can edit any .DOC / .PPT / .XLS document, and export as .DOC / .PPT / .XLS document, but can only view .DOCX / .PPTX / .XLSX documents and edit / export them as .DOC / .PPT / .XLS.
â NeoOffice can edit and export any Word document, but has the same limits as Keynote for PowerPoint documents.

Pages is similar in use to Word, except not as many oddities and hidden defaults that are hard to change. Keynote is similar to PowerPoint, except with much better transitions. Keynote has two limitations: it cannot apply a video to more than one slide, and it cannot apply an audio file (music) to more than one slide (except as background for the whole presentation). That's why I have both Apple's office apps and MS Office.

How can i get video footage in a youtube video?

DetectiveB

Just to be clear i know how to create a video on my camera and put it on youtube.. that is easy
BUT...
i want to know how can i like get for an example a a sample of a youtube video in my own video so i can put on youtube.. or maybe a sample of a DVD film playin from my laptop, how would i get that in a video created by me onto Youtube?

Answer
Use "Free Download Manager" to download videos from youtube and similar sites:
http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/

It integrates with any browser. When the add-on is installed, you'll see a small green 'Download with FDM' box appear when you hover your mouse pointer on the upper left hand corner of the video a few seconds after it starts to play.

You can download videos from streaming video sites like Youtube, Metacafe, Dailymotion, Veoh, Google Video, etc.

The video is saved in its native format but can be directly converted to other popular formats like MP4, MPG, AVI, WMV, FLV, and yes, even MP3.

As for DVD movies, rip the whole movie to your hard drive using this:
http://www.formatoz.com/

After getting all the videos you need, edit them on Windows Live Movie Maker 2011:
http://explore.live.com/windows-live-movie-maker

Finally, post your work to youtube.

What is the difference between the mac book and mac book air?

I know the difference with the mac book pro but these two laptops ( mac book and mac book air) appear the same and seem like they have the same technology.i don't know which one to buy now!

Answer
MacBook Pro:
- You can add in a Core i5 or i7 in it if you want. More RAM. Capable of doing heavy tasks, such as video editing. Sometimes you can get 10 hours of battery life. Also, there are more ports than the MacBook Air.

MacBook Air:
- Thin, Lite, and small. Its very portable. No Hard Drives, it uses a Flash Storage. Its not as powerful compared to the MacBook / Pro series. And it uses the Core 2 Duo Chip, instead of an i3 processor. Its best for Daily web surfing, Photos, Media, Documents, etc; Not used for heavy duty tasks.

The new Early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" Apple MacBook Pro MC723LL is an incredible leap in performance. I deal with new Macs every day, and most of the time a performance increase is not that great. This new line is a HUGE leap in performance, both in processor (quad core vs dual core) as well as graphics (discreet). I bought the low end 2 GHZ model and increased the RAM to 8G. I give VMWare 2 processors and 4G of RAM...Windows screams!!! For Adobe CS5 work, much, much faster than dual core.

Answer
I'd like to recommend HD video editor to you, I always use it to edit video and make funny video for uploading to Youtube, it's easy to use and the quality is awesome, you can crop, cut, join, edit video with it easily. It also embeds many special effects, you can even add text to video or add background music, that's pretty cool. It worth a try. Here is the free download link.

And here is a step by step guide about how to use it

Is it possible to install both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Vista?

Katner

I've got a vinyl cutter and the software for it requires 32-bit versions of Windows (Vista or prior). But the PC that I want to install it on now has also been used for some photo-editing and some video editing/rendering/encoding with Vegas PRO 64-bit.

I'd like to partition my drive and have both versions of the OS on my PC. Is this possible? And can provide instructions or link me to some.

Answer
Yes 64-bit is backward compatible so it will run any 32-bit program.
There is therefore just no reason to do it but if you really want you can partition your hard drive in 2 parts and install 32-bit in one partition and 64-bit in another.
Again I can not see any reason for that but if you really want you can do it.

What is the best video editing software for Windows Vista?

Adobe Premier Elements
Sony Vegas
Avid

I want one that can make really great AMVs with cool special effects.

Answer
Of the three you have listed here, Sony Vegas platinum edition would best suit your needs. Adobe Premiere is a good second choice. Personally I find Avid too hard to use and extremely overpriced for what you get.

In my opinion Sony Vegas has the most special effect options, in the lowest price bracket. It is simple to use and very powerful. It also has the best audio editing capabilities of the three programs you have listed here. I use Vegas Pro 8 daily, as well as Final Cut. Between the two, I prefer Vegas for most tasks.

If you are going to be working with a lot of still images, Premiere Elements bundled with Photoshop elements is a very good choice.

This is my opinion as of 9/9/08. Video equipment changes literally daily and yesterdays top of the line is todays obsolete junk.

My friends and I love to make videos. However, the camera I currently have is out of date and we cant upload anything to edit it. What kind of camera would be really good for video making and is under 200 bucks? Also, what kind of laptop is good for video editing and has lots of space on it? And what is a really good yet affordible video editing software? For mac and pc.

Answer
truthfully your not going to find a good video camera with the functions you'll need to shoot a movie under 2 grand(new). but as far as editing it on a laptop you'll want something with a fast processor and at least 4 gigs of ram. the hard drive doesnt matter as much due to the fact that you can always get external ones, but at least 500 I'd get a terabit if its in your budget to start with. Pinnacle Studio is under 200 bucks and is a ok editing studio to start with.

How would i record 3 different video cameras onto my pc at the same time?

video editing software with pip image

Stephen Ha

To be able to record from 3 sources, ie video cams, how would i go about recording them simultaniously?

I presume i need a video suite to begin with. live windows movie maker or other but will such programs permit multiple devices to recpord at the same time for different camera angles of the same shot?

Answer
Hi again, Stephen:

From your Y!A Question yesterday about split-screen & PIP, you have an interest in multi-camera multi-angle shoots like in the Jared Falk drumming tutorials you referenced in that discussion: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AqnF6ZXueWqGYNdPHOi5rnLsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20130118061726AAoFj3m

For most projects like this, since recording to tape or memory inside each camera is relatively cheap (compared to the old days of film or large studio TV cameras), each shot is stored without using a computer (recording more than one camera at the same time is a very large workload on a PC!) and then combined (edited) later.

To make sure all the different footage lines-up (called "sync" for synchronization), a clapperboard or "slate" is held up where all the cameras can "see" it. (This is why you've seen movie set scenes or blooper-reels with someone calling out "Scene Two, Take One" and "Scene Two, Take Two" etc., then clapping the hinged stick at the top of the slate loudly.)

The visual slate makes sure all the right Scenes & Takes (versions of same scene) match each other , and the loud clack of the clapsticks makes sure the audio matches frame-for-frame (the visual closing of the sticks marks where the short clack sound should be).

This method has been used for sound movies ever since they were invented back in the 1920's. There are more-modern "electronic slate" & Time-Code methods using LEDs and short "beeps" for sync.

Low-budget productions (or in-a-hurry shots) often use the "hand-clap" method. An actor or other person in the shot holds their arms out to one side, widely apart, and then claps them together to make a sync-point. They can also call out the shot & take info, as well as hold up a sheet of paper or card with the slate info for the editor.

Another reason slates & sync are important is for "double-system sound". For music videos and projects like Jared Falk's drumming demos good sound is essential, so a separate audio recording system (usually digital now, but analog tape is still used) along with one or more microphones captures the sound better than any of the cameras could. This allows you to use cheaper cameras that don't have external mike connections.

The other recording method I briefly covered in our other Y!A discussion mentioned multiple cameras & a video mixer. This is the typical TV studio method, and used to be a necessity before camcorders were invented (and later became cheaper than studio cameras). In this, a video director makes live decisions which camera to choose from or, in the case of split-screen & PIP, which cameras will appear where on the screen. The video mixer sends the single choice or mixed image to a separate video recorder or tape machine for storage. Titles & special effects can be added live or later on during editing.

When it comes to webcams (whose video stream doesn't take up as much storage space compared to regular HD cameras), there are software programs like MultiCam which can handle more than one webcam at a time. You still need a good, fast PC & hard drives to record all this at once, and in most cases someone needs to act as "director" to make switching decisions.

As far as Windows Movie Maker, it's a basic A/B timeline editor (switching back & forth between only two cameras or clips at a time, and no PIP or split-screen effects). It can edit video clips from more than two cameras (although not "live" video), but it can't run more than one video track at a time, which makes multi-camera edits hard to sync & keep track of.

There are better editors (even for under-$100 USD) that allow multiple video tracks & the simultaneous shot effects you are looking for. AVID's Pinnacle Studio is a popular edit package in this price range ($50-$99 depending on version & where you shop). NCH Software's VideoPad is a free download and has similar multi-track features and PIP effects.

I'll add some links in my Sources below, for more info. (You appear to be in the UK, so let me know if you need UK software links.)

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

The laptop I want is 17 inch, is that to big for a college student?

Answer
Depends on what you're using it for. If its just for writing papers and things and carrying around in class, I would go for a smaller size, such as a 13' macbook. If you're going to use it for designing, video editing, or going to spend extensive amounts of time on the computer, I'd go with the 17' macbook pro.
Hope it all goes well!

Can someone offer insight on a good laptop?

The Disint

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I haven't used anything but Mac for over three years. I know Toshiba makes a decent laptop but what about these Samsung laptops? What are the top PC brands for laptops these days? I do a lot of video editing (hobby) so I need at least 6GB Memory to handle HD video. I have a 2TB external Hard Drive so the hard drive space on the computer doesn't need to be enormous. Any suggestions and links?
Not looking to spend more than like $800 for a laptop.

Answer
I found some and you can choose any one from these. I would recommend getting you HP Pavilion DV8 but I guess HP aren't making laptops anymore(rumor). Toshiba laptops are okay but the model of most of those looks pale and almost same. I don't have any experience with Samsung Laptop so I have no idea about it. However my friend has some Samsung Netbook and it is working flawless since a year. Asus laptops are #1 selling on most of the countries according to the internet and provided data from the sellers. They also make awesome ones. My wife has Asus Republic Of Gamers laptop and it can handle any games and applications along with multitasking without any lag.

I am taking a multimedia course so i will be doing video editing and production, animation, web design, photoshopping, etc. I have some friends who say it is powerful enough for all that and some others who say either get macbook pro or go for a windows one. Which do you guys think i should get?

Answer
Hello!
Well, the answer is simple.
If you require to do Power Intensive Jobs, the answer is Macbook Pro.
Requirements like video editing, production, animation, etc would be well tackled by Pro than Air.

However, I presume for uni and everyday use, Air being light weight would be easy to carry.
I suggest you buy Macbook Pro.

What is a fantastic permanently free video editor?

Kat

I already have Windows Movie Maker and my laptop is a Windows 8. It's good but the editing video lags and the video effects aren't what I'm looking for. I mostly just want one certain video effect, which is where you can show one video full screen and a separate video in a little square in a corner. (Such as PewDiePie, SwiftKarateChop, Smosh, etc.) I've looked and can't find any. Thanks! Any questions, just ask!

Answer
You want to do "split screen" or "picture in picture" video editing. These two free video editors can easily do such. The videos show how:

FileLab

VSDC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zokUQHkRaDU

with VSDC you can do additional special effects on the inserted video. Here's an example, watch the movement and sizing effects as each clip flies by:

I'm looking to get a windows 7 laptop. I currently have a 2011 MBP 15" 2.2 i7 with 8GB Ram & 80GB SSD.

I've been needing to use windows more and more (for heavy tasks, not good for virtual machines), and have a cheapo laptop that I use, but now I want to maybe make windows my primary laptop and want a really good one.

What I want to use it for: Multiple and massive excel spreadsheets open at once, copying and pasting tens of thousands of rows between them, two browsers open with multiple tabs each, FTP program and editing html, general web browsing and a lot of multitasking etc.

Requirements:

Atleast 8GB ram (I can add myself), and prefer upgradable to 12 or 16.
15"-17" screen
Great keyboard and trackpad
Great Screen
i7 processor
Blu ray drive, or one that I could swap out for a BD drive
SSD, hybrid or one I could swap out
HDMI out
Nice looking

I don't play games but I do watch videos on the laptop via youtube/hulu, netlfix etc when traveling.

Budget $2000.

Recommendations?

Thanks!

Answer
Best ones you will be able to get,

Either SAGER or FALCON NORTHWEST. (someone may say alienware, but no thats dell & they are bad ever since takeover)

xoticpc has the best selection, itll run you around 1400~1600 for a fully loaded top-of-the-line SAGER (German build quality = amazing) or an American company, Falcon Northwest operates off their own site.

Answer
Absolutely! In fact I would say this is a bit over the top. What I advise those who are in the market for a no frills laptop is to get a common 14" or 15" Intel Core i3 or i5 system with three or four gigabytes of RAM and an integrated video chipset. These run around $330 at Best Buy and will do everything from the typical web browsing and internet to HD video and lightweight video editing and Photoshop work. In this case the system you're looking at has one and a half to two times the common about of memory, twice the typical hard drive space and a dedicated video chipset, so yes, you should be good!

How can I transfer videos from my video camera?

best sony vaio laptop for video editing image

Crissis

I have a "Sony Handycam CCD-TR517" and of course, it's analog...
I have old videos in 8 millimeter cassettes and well. i want to transfer them to my laptop and then burn them to a CD, i have a Sony Vaio laptop... so i have no idea how the analog video cameras connect to the compu. Do i need a software or just a wire...? what the hell do i need, hahahahaha. PLEASE HELP ME AND EXPLAIN IT STEP BY STEP... THANX!

Answer
The Sony CCD-TR517 is a Video8 analog camcorder. You know this.

You will need the AV cable that came with the camcorder...

If your computer has a Firewire/i.LINK/DV/IEEE1304 port, then you will want to get an "analog/digital converter" like the Canopus ADVC55 or ADVC110.

If your computer has no firewire port and no way to add one, then you are stuck with the USB based A/D converters from Pinnacle (Dazzle) or Roxio - among many others.

Plug the Camcorder's AV cable into the camcorder and the A/D converter.

Plug the A/D converter into the computer.

Put the camcorder in Play mode.

Launch the video editing application or import utility.

Press play on the camcorder.

Import the video.

how good is the sony vaio laptops? how is the movie maker?

i am thinking about getting a sony vaio laptop. i want a good movie maker program that is similuar to the mac one but not as expensive. is this a good laptop? if not what is the best laptop for my needS?

Answer
I already gave up using movie maker which is a trash. it is too basic to make any functional slideshow and always make my work lose!
i have used a few other video editing programs and the easiest one has been
Photo MovieTheater. Very easy to use with professional features and
same sort of layout as Movie Maker however a lot more powerful.

If you are looking for special effects such as light sabers, lasers,
running on roof tops then you will need Adobe After Effects very good
program that can produce some genuine looking film effects however does take some learning and cost a lot

Can I take frames out of a video and edit them with photoshop? How?? If not, what is the best video editing software <$250??

Answer
are you on a Mac or pc? i would say final cut pro. but its Mac only. the only video editing software that you can have good end results with on a pc is the adobe video package. but it is almost 1,000 bucks and is very hard to use. final cut pro is simple as heck. do the first cut in imovie on the mac which is nothing but drag and drops. encode it into h.264 for html5 and HD and then import it into final cut pro and put the finishing touches on it. run adobe after effects to add cool animating and such and boom. you have hollywood quality videos.

Like record the guitar, and then record my voice and then put it all together.

The video editing software I need to be able to put clips together, cut, edit, etc. I have windows live movie maker, and it's good, but I want something else.

Any help?

How can I have pictures travel from a background and then travel back?

My friend recently asked me if I could help her with a video project she would like to do for her mother's birthday. I didn't promise her I could do it but that I would look into it. Anyways, the project seems simple but I would not even know where to begin.

She has 50 photographs arranged in a way to show the number 50. She would like to then have each photo from this big 50 come out from the big 50 and then have it travel back to the big 50. She wants to do this for all 50 photos.

I have vegas 10, I don't know if it's even possible to do it on this video editing software but I am putting it out there.

Any idea how I can help her with this?

Answer
you'd have to arrange them in photoshop or something -- there's no preset for photos in a "50" shape. the pictures would also be so small that you couldnt see them.

I love acting and making home videos. But I recently wrote a book and I want to make a "book preview" like a movie preview commercial for it. I want this video to look more professional than my usual ones. I have Windows Live movie maker, personally I liked the windows movie maker 2.5 better. I've heard of Imovie but it's only for Mac, right? I can't get it on my windows 8 hp laptop. What are some other movie makers that for FREE that makes videos look professional. Things I can do like blue screen, and mixing to videos together. I don't have many actors so I will have to do a screen blend to mix two separate videos together. any ideas of a software I can download for free. THanks so much in advance! :)

Answer
May I suggest three very good free video editor programs, Freemake, FileLab, or VSDC? Each is safe, fully functioning, no watermarks, will not ask for money, and are recent releases that are HD capable. Take your pick:

Of the three, I think you'd like VSDC best. It has blue screen, split screen, you name it:

How long before this camera is considered obsolete?

My son is a high school senior. Next year he wants to go to community college and live at home (at least that is reasonably affordable) instead of going away to school. He wants to take an expensive major however. Video production. We have been able to save about $5,000 towards his education. We are not wealthy people. The rest will have to come from loans and maybe a grant or scholarship.
We are looking at some "entry level" pro cameras in the $1500-1800 range. That's about 1/3 of our savings for his education.
Models include these:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/745707-REG/Sony_HXR_MC2000U_HXR_MC2000U_Shoulder_Mount_AVCHD.html

and
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/749467-REG/Canon_4922B002_XA10_HD_Professional_Camcorder.html

My concern is he starts September 2013 so these products may not even be available by then or others will be available. We hope he graduates May 2015. He tells us when he graduates he will maybe find a freelance job or shoot local cable news, build up some experience, maybe after 2 years go for a B.A. at least part time.
Is anything we buy him in 2013 (summer) going to be any use to him as a working professional in 2015 (summer)? So let's say you are a class of 2012 graduate with an AAS in video production. The camera you purchased in the summer of 2010 when you first started, do you still use it professionally? Can you make anything doing freelance news videos, PR videos or local account commercials with this equipment?
We're going to do everything we can to help him. No doubt he will still be living at home in the summer of 2015. By then he's going to have a student loan to pay off. We have a 2005 Hyundai Accent that we are going to give him for college. I hope that thing still runs when it is 10 years old and he isn't making car payments on top of that. The thing has 120,000 miles on it but runs really well. I just fear when he graduates he's going to be in deep debt and have limited employment. I may be wrong. What do you think? Thanks.

Answer
Hi "Upwardly Mobile":

Fellow Contributor "L" covered most of the bases quite well, but the only point he didn't underscore is that MOST good video & film production programs at community colleges HAVE the cameras, lights, mikes, tripods, and other gear that the students will learn on & use.

When I went to a local (but nationally prominent) university with a Broadcast/Film Dept., portable video was still fairly new, but all the film cameras, tripods, & light kits were supplied by the Department for students to "check out" as-needed for class projects.

And most video production students start out with Studio Production techniques (where it's easier for groups to learn 3-point lighting, camera setup & tripod/dolly operation, shot composition, audio techniques & mixing, etc.). No need for portable field gear there.

For field production & Electronic News Gathering, a good college will have a fair number of camcorders for students to use & check out (if needed for outside-of-class projects).

The same is true for Editing Software & computer workstations. Some college programs might be economizing and making students supply their own laptops for this, but all the major software companies offer Academic Editions of their normally-expensive edit suites at discounted prices. And of course, nowadays, apps like iMovie (Mac) and Movie Maker (PC) come "free" as part of the operating system and can accomplish what older (and expensive) software used to do, as far as basic editing.

As "L" mentioned, do a bit of "homework" yourself by contacting the community college's department head & instructors for your son's chosen major. Tour the facilities (studio and edit suites) and ask about the "equipment room" for student project gear. See what textbooks (a major expense) are required, and whether computer/laptop & software expense will be part of what's expected of your son. Only if there's little-or-no camcorder gear (or no hands-on studio cameras) would I recommend buying anything like the models from B+H that you listed.

Almost every cable TV & freelance video job I've had over the past 30 years has "supplied" (rented or company-owned) the cameras & grip gear I needed. I bring my own gear only when it's a "favor" or when what I have is better-suited to the task, or they want a "director with gear". My point being, your son doesn't need to own =any= camera gear to make a living freelancing. A good camera operator can stay busy in almost any part of the country, with just his/her skills. (Same for sound mixers & boom/wireless mike operators.)

hope this helps, and hope it saves you some money,
--Dennis C.
