Good and cheap home video editing software?

MFB

I need to buy a simple and cheap home movie editing program to edit the little films I take with my digital camera and format them for DVD. Does anyone have suggestions?

Answer
Video editing software that adds music and narrations. These programs can link together short video clips. One warning: Video editing demands a lot of computer resourcesâeach hour of video requires 13 gigabytes of hard drive space. You will need at least 512 megabytes of RAM. Anything less will slow down your computer considerably.

1. Windows Movie Maker. If you have Windows XP, you should have Windows Movie Maker 2 (Windows XP only). Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, Windows Movie Maker. If you donât find it, you can download it from Microsoft's Web site (www.microsoft.com). Microsoftâs Web site offers a number of tutorials.

You can assemble clips using the storyboard view. This allows you to drag and drop clips into little boxes at the bottom of your screen (you can change the order of these boxes, too). When you find the order you like, you can add over 50 transitions (fades, dissolves, wipes, etc.) that will link your clips together.

Video effects will slow down, speed up or blur your video. Thereâs even an effect that can turn portions of your video into a watercolor painting.

The timeline view allows you to add music, titles or narration.

2. Avid Free DV (www.avid.com/freedv, Windows XP; Mac OS X 10.4.2 or later) offers a fraction of Avidâs other (and costly) video-editing programs. But it does have some of the features of the full version of Avid.

There are over a dozen free video tutorials on Avidâs Web site.

Avid Free DV allows you to trim video, edit audio and create titles. Its timeline utilizes two video and two audio tracks and 16 video effects.

3. VirtualDub (www.virtualdub.org; Windows 95 and later)is a very fast, full-featured program.

The video-editing capabilities are limited, but it allows you to trim video and adjust audio. VirtualDub is known for its filters: adjust the brightness; sharpen the picture; blur clips together; rotate pictures; etc. Then you can view the before effects and after effects in the two windowsâhere you can cancel the filter effects.

For the more advanced there is:
Adobe www.adobe.com
Pinnacle www.pinnaclesys.com
Ulead www.ulead.com
Cost: less than $100.

Video Editing Software?

I have a video of a storm and I want to be able to frame it on a spot in the video where its lighting striking down. Whats a good software that lets me go frame by frame?

Answer
Try Wax (freeware)
Wax is a high performance and flexible video compositing and special effects software. The idea for Wax is to be very general purpose and flexible in video compositing and effects, so that you can compose your dream video sequence with ease everytime.

Wax can create 2D & 3D special effects and can work in two modes - as a standalone application which would appeal for home users/beginners, and as a "plug-in" to video editors/NLEs which would be more useful for professional editors. Currently Wax can work as a plug-in with Sony Vegas®, Pure Motion EditStudio and Adobe Premiere® and work for integrating with various other NLEs is in progress.

Another free slideshow maker, with tons of 2D and 3D transition effects. Get it Here:

i seriously want to get into video editing and filming and acting so i need the best ssoftware for a budget

Answer
It may sound strange but... Blender(3d software) has powerfull features for video editing. U can do hell of a lot things with it, but u need knowledge for that. Even make 3d models in scenes and mix it with movie with effect u wont plus animate effect over frames. I totally recommend it. Its kinda best to have software that is "all in one".

What editing software is good for making YouTube videos?

RagingWimp

I'm looking for editing software that would be able to take files recorded from something like FRAPS or Dxtory and split it into parts, render it to HD, and is rather easy to use. It would also be nice if it didn't cost more than $50-$60. Thanks :)

Answer
If using a Windows OS PC, then here are 2 of the best Video Editing Programs going. 1000s of effects and lots more on each Program. If doing HD Video, then do the Upgrade, it is needed and download one or both of the Programs and have fun.

Pinnacle Studio 14 HD Ultimate & Sony Vegas Pro 10

This is not a program that can run on any computer, see below -

⢠Audio: MP3, MPA, WAV, AC3*, WMA
⢠Graphic: BMP, GIF, JPG, PCX, PSD, TGA, TIF, WMF, PNG, J2K

Once there, in the search box on that site, enter 'Pinnacle Studio 14' or âSony Vegas Pro 10â. Youâre looking for free download, find a link or video that says that, in the video description, there will be link for a free download. How to edit a video general?

Kalvin

Can you please describe how to edit videos? Doesn't have to be vlogs but smaller videos in general. I wanna learn how to jump cut. This next question is hard to explain but you know when you're, let's say, filming yourself talking then the next clip is the camera focusing on a random object BUT you can still hear yourself talking. How does that audio of you talking carry over to the clip of the camera focusing on the object. I don't know how you edit that into a video. Please help!

Answer
You need a Video Editing Program, like either one found below, where you can lock down an item or edit the Audio and Video separately on the Timeline, which both programs below can do easily.

Jump cut, Sony Vegas - http://youtu.be/-fCUjIKIGc0

Once you have that Video above, doing a Jump Cut in Pinnacle studio is much the same. If you want a picture or other Video over an existing Audio clip, that is easy also. Just lock your Audio down with the locks to the right of the Timeline, then put your picture on the Timeline below the Video. Doing that will give you the Split points on your Video that you need to remove to be able to insert the picture while everything else remains in sync. Easy to do.

Pinnacle Studio 14 HD Ultimate & Sony Vegas Pro 10

What is a good video editing software?

Michael

i am looking into a new editing system primarily to edit DVDs on, now my laptop is a 2011 Toshiba C655-S5122 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM Intel Core i3 M 380 @ 2.53GHz. my budget is under $100, i need something powerful and that renders pretty fast, and i would like it to burn after rendering. i have tried multiple programs, currently using AVS VideoEditor witch is glitched and freezes up constantly.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
~MC

Answer
Well it's going to be hard to find a good one for under $100. I'm do professional video editing and they can get a little pricey.

I would recommend look a Corel video studio software. It works very good and there are different versions and also Sony Vegas.

Corel editing software if definitely my favorite on the lower end editing software.

Now if you want to go professional you could look into Adobe Premiere. There are some older versions out there on ebay and places like that where you can buy it used or cheap. Just make sure you are getting a software code and not just the installation disks. I learned to use Adobe Premiere CS5 version. CS6 is out now but you can the older version CS4 pretty cheap sometimes. I wouldn't go any lower then Adobe CS4.

Feel free to email me if you have any more questions you need help with

What free video editing software is good for a laptop like hp dm4 to download?

Laurentiu

Hello to everyone!
As I mentioned I have a hp dm4 (i5 with 1696 MB video graphic card shared memory) and strange is that it didn't came not even with the windows movie maker soft. Since I have to find a free video editing program, I am not sure which video editing program is more suitable for this kind of laptop. Basically I'm trying to find out a video editing software that will work well, but also to have enough application that gives numerous tools for editing videos. I know that if you need something really good you would probably need to pay, but I'm not looking for something to professional or to complicated. However also I don't think I would like to have something to simple or without the possibility to do some nice editing. If somebody knows more about this kind of things please let me know.
By the way so far I downloaded the new 2011 version of windows movie maker, but I was wondering if there is something better than WMM. Thank you.

Answer
Hey Laurentiu,

I would recommend trakAxPC Pro. It's aimed at the novice user but has all the features of a professional software.

It's a really good and user-friendly video editing software which allows you to edit and mix any combination of audio, video and photos. It also has loads of features like effects, text, split screen, reverse, slow-motion etc, plus you can upload your video directly to YouTube through the application.

There's a free lite version and a Pro (paid) version available

You can check it out here: http://www.trakax.com/software/pc/

Video editing software?

Hi, I'm looking for a video editing software.I am using Vista (PC) and want to make some professional looking movies ,clips, etc. I have tried Movie Maker and all those things like pinnacle .I DO NOT WANT MOVIE MAKER!!!!!!!! So i would like something within a $0-70 max range.I would like something with a green screen feature , but that is not totally necessary. I have looked at Sony Vegas ands all those products. I was thinking about getting something from Sony Vegas but i don't like it that much .Most of you are probably going to recommend Adobe Premiere Elements.I dont want trials or anything.I have tried AVS andi didnt like it. I REALLY REALLY like this video and the effects in it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_YR4dKArgo&feature=fvst . Thank you soo much! I would really appreciate links but just the name of the program is alright to, its not hard to google something up. Again Thank you! All answers are welcome!

Video editing.?

G-grrrl.

If anyone can help me with this, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have a video stored on my computer, it is an MPEG. It's huge. I want to edit out one sequence of it to post at "You Tube", as it is way too large to post in full. I have read that you need an editing program to do this, but I was hoping that there was some way in which I could do it for free, as I don't want to buy a program just to edit and post one clip at "You Tube".

I have Windows XP. I downloaded a program called "Movie maker" for free, but it refused to accept the MPEG file, so I uninstalled it. Any ideas how to do this? I'm new to editing, so I apologize for how silly this question probably sounds! Thanks.

Answer
It's not a silly question at all. Here is link you can go to http://www.download.com/3120-20_4-0.html?tag=fil&qt=video+editting&sort=&operatingSystems=&licenseType=49&fileSize=&ca=. They list all sorts of different types of video software. But look through it, click a link on top of all the listings that says free, so you only get free programs lised, an then from there read on. Make sure you find a video editor that will support MPEG, so make sure it says it somewhere in the description MPEG.If that search don't help go back to www.download.com and keep typing it in other ways, i typed video editting software. The best part about the site they got many other programs you can get from them and there all spyware and adware free. Hope this helps.

What is a good video editing software for windows 7?

ideorama81

I know this is a common question on Yahoo! Answers. Everything I get for Windows 7 seems to crash. I have searched the internet and found nothing but biased reviews because of someone's one-time negative experience. There are tons of free one's that don't work well at all. AVS is nailed to a coffin every time I have read a review. I am just wondering out of the ones you have tried, which one is good for Windows 7 32-bit?

I currently have Corel VideoStudio Pro X4 (the upgrade, from X3). It keeps freezing on Windows 7 for some reason. I had no problem with X3, however, the X4 upgrade is constantly crashing.

And I am looking for something that won't slow down my whole laptop or take up a lot of HD/Ram space.

Not looking for any free software or any crap download links to your own creation, something main stream please (I usually get links to free no-name one's I've never heard of).

Any ideas?

Here are some:

- Sony Vegas 10
- Adobe After Effects

How to record a video using Windows Movie Maker?

summercraz

Alright, so I wanna make a video to upload on youtube.
I dont really know how to.
My webcam is like already built in.
I have a Windows XP laptop.
HELP PLEASE! <3
Thank you!
I would like to RECORD IT on Windows Movie Maker.

Answer
Windows movie maker, unlike the dozens of video editing programs available for about $100, does not have any capture ability built into the program.

My Pinnacle Studio program can open a sub program that captures from most any device hooked to my computer. If my MiniDV tape camcorder is hooked up to the computer, that program can control the camcorder as needed. When i go to capture, I see about 6 or 7 devices it can capture video from. When i close the capture sub program, my editing software puts the very video i just uploaded right on the screen so I can drag it down to the timeline, seamlessly.

The best window laptop for video editing?

LenaH

I'm looking for a window laptop that is compatible for video editing. It doesn't have to be portable because i'll be using the laptop mostly at home. Right now i use Mac OS X (iMovie) and i want the Sony Vegas program, which means i need to get a window laptop. So do you know any laptop that is compatible for video editing?

P.S Hopefully the maximum price is $1000.

Answer
I dont recommend a laptop for video editing because sometimes the rendering can take a long time and overheat your laptop. Laptops arent really designed for video editing or gaming.

You should get a desktop PC with a Quad processor and good video card and RAM. You can get a nice one for $600-$700. and unlike a laptop, you can expand the desktop and upgrade as much as you want.

I'm thinking of asking for that for Christmas, but I want to know if you can connect that to a laptop. If so, would the cable be included with that camera (or any camcorder for that matter) or would I need to buy my own?

Also I love using photoshop for image editing, but is there an Adobe product for video editing?

This camcorder only comes with composite video output so it will only connect to a TV unless you have a video capture card on your laptop which most don't.

To edit the video, you'll need to take the finalized disc from this camcorder to your laptop, rip the files to your hard disk, then use which ever software you are using for video editing.

What is the best video editing software for Ubuntu Linux?

Jesus Wuz

I enjoy using Windows Movie Maker on my friend's Windows, but I need an alternative when I try to edit videos in Ubuntu. I have already tried Cinelerra and it is too complicated for making YouTube videos. I am currently using PiTiVi but I do not know how to insert titles. Can someone suggest an effective video editor that lets you insert and edit titles like in Windows Movie Maker???
I heard Kino does not support AVI files. And as for the first two answerers, I am not running Windows (Adobe Premier Pro) nor am I running Mac (iMovie). All I need to know is how to add titles using a Linux video editor.

Answer
@first 2 answerers: Read the question, people. This guy is using Linux, not Mac, not Windows. Linux.

First, I'd like to commend you for using Linux! I love it too.
Kino has always seemed to be good. Maybe even better than Windows Movie Maker. You can get it in Synaptic, but the easiest way is in the terminal.

Applications>Accessories>Terminal

sudo aptitude install kino

Enter your password, push enter. Enjoy!

There are plenty videos, open source software on Linux ubuntu, but for windows OS you may find spyware infections attachment programs that will slow down your operating system. I would not try any of those for windows programs.

Free video editing software?

Bartosz

I have windows 8 and i a couple of months ago have started editing videos for magic/ cardistry videos. The problem is, that I have been using windows movie maker, because it is simple. I want something free, but a little more difficult to get used to because of the special effects (which obviously I want to learn to use). I cant find anything good right now, but maybe you guys know of some good ones. And by free i don't mean free trail.

Answer
Video Editing:

Lightworks; free alternative to Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas.
http://lwks.com

Lightworks has been used in the movie industry for more than 20 years. Lightworks also has the fastest workflow in the industry.

Lightworks used to cost more than $1,000, but now Lightworks Pro costs $60/year and you can download a free version from their website.

Sony Vegas costs $600 and that's the same price as using Lightworks Pro for 10 years.

Editors using Lightworks have produced numerous internationally renowned and Oscar and Emmy award-winning feature films and television programs, including The King's Speech, The Departed, Mission Impossible, Braveheart, and Pulp Fiction.

And yes! Lightworks is FREE if you don't need pro video codecs and you can use the free version as long as you want.

Color Grading:

Use color grading to make the video "pop to life", to change the mood, or to make it look more like a movie or TV show.

DaVinci Resolve is the best color grading software in the industry.
http://blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve

You can download a FREE version of DaVinci Resolve from their website.

3D Animation and Visual Effects:

Blender; free alternative to Maya and After Effects.
http://blender.org

Blender has a complete VFX pipeline in one single software package. Blender has tools for modeling, sculpting, rigging, animation, rotoscoping, chroma keying (green screen), motion tracking, smoke, fire, and fluid simulation, particles, destruction, physics, color grading, node compositing, and video editing.

After Effects uses "layer-based" compositing. Blender uses "node-based" compositing similar to Nuke; used in the movie industry http://thefoundry.co.uk/products/nuke

Blender has more advanced features but After Effects is easier to use.

The easiest and most detailed tutorial on how to use Blender is Neal Hirsig's tutorial at http://gryllus.net/Blender/3D.html

Blender is 100% free with full functionality, no adware, no spyware, and no viruses, and you're allowed to use Blender in any production without having to pay for anything.

Video Editing Software?

Blobby

I often see videos that have been placed over created backgrounds though i am not sure how this is achieved and what software is used to create this, here is an example if you do not understand what i'mm talking about. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hixjuZvPVU please can someone tell me what software is need to create this effect

Answer
I suggest two options:
1. If you are familiar with Windows Movie Maker, which usually comes with Windows Vista (C:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe), you can use it to make photo slideshow and burn saved WMV video with your favorite dvd burning software, say Nero, Roxio.
2. Choose one photo slideshow software to make slideshow and directly burn slideshow DVD for TV playback. I once use Wondershare DVD Slideshow Builder to make my travel slideshow DVD, and the result is excellent.

Video Editing Software?

......

what is the best video editing software i can buy with alot of special effects and chromokeying and stuff like that?

Answer
Adobe Premier is always my fave. Final Cut Pro is another industry used software package that is supposedly pretty good, but I don't currently know it.

There are other things out there for the home user, I also have Nero on here with a nice little editing program for cheaper then the industry stuff. Not quite as detailed and feature filled as the big guys, but it and others like it are still decent if people don't have the money (or the need) for the studio stuff.

Edit: Wikipedia actually mentions a number of them, some I've heard of, others I haven't. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_editing_software

connect video camera to pc?

Glenn D

Answer
Go to Best Buy, Circuit City or possibly Radio Shack and get a "Video-to-USB" converter. It will probably come with a driver to install. Or you can look for a video editing software like Video Explosion and read on the packaging if a converter is supplied. If your video camera has a "firewire" socket, all you need is a firewire from any of the above places or even at Staples. Then you should be able to use software already in your computer (like Microsoft Movie Maker) to get your movies onto your PC. Good luck!

How do you make gaming videos?

Lexi

I love playing video games and I want to make videos but I have no clue how to do it? I see a bunch of different ways online but they're so confusing. Does anybody know how to record game play, what editing system is needed, how to voice over and add video, etc? I would preferably rather buy the software and everything else needed in a store then off line. I use a ps3 and pc. if that helps.

Answer
Allow me to help! Prepare for a wall of text.

I record PC games using DXTORY, which is fantastic. It's about the same price as FRAPS, which is the more popular software, but DXTORY has a nicer UI and apparently causes fewer performance issues. Both around £25, if memory serves.

A great video describing how to get the most out of DXTORY is listed in my sources, by jackfrags on YouTube.

You need a microphone to record your voice and you'd better make sure it's good quality. You need:
1. Dynamic Headset Microphone.
2. Condenser Microphone

The first is what you find on quality headsets and are cheaper than the second, so it's a good starting point. The second are microphones that are too big for headsets and will sit on your desk/on a mic stand. These are often connected to an external sound card. The "Blue" series of mics are a staple for YouTube and are plugged in, I think, just via USB.
The Blue "Snowball" is a cheap starting point, but the Blue "Yeti" is the better option. I'm saving up for the Yeti myself.

Yogscast Dynamic examples are listed as:
- Microsoft LifeChat LX-3000
- Razer / Steelseries Headsets
- Audio Technica BPHS1

Yogscast say the following about condenser mics:
"For an affordable condenser microphone I would recommend something like the sE2000 Mk2, however you can easily spend a large amount of money on these microphones.
As far as external sound cards go, another good and reliable piece of kit is the Focusrite 2i2 USB interface. Combine that with something like the Rhode PSA-1 table clamp stand to hold your microphone, and you have a very capable audio recording setup"

You can use DXTORY to take your mic input directly, but when dealing with multiplayer, or other softwares, you will need something else to record the mic. I think just about everyone agrees that Audacity is the program you need. It's free and open source. Link in sources.
You can use it to record your mic audio AND as an audio editor, all for free.

That's PC game recording sorted. Now, onto your consoles. My recommendation is the Elgato HD Capture Card. Capture cards (good ones) are fairly expensive, but this one's not too bad and it is very good! Easy to set up, easy to use and gives you high quality, low file size content.

If you want to record webgames, like Happy Wheels, you will need some sort of screen recording software. I have not been able to find a decent free software yet, but I hear good things about Camtasia, but you have to pay for that.

Once you have recorded your game video and audio, you'll need to edit it. These softwares are expensive, but worth it.

A free one to use, until you can afford a proper editing program, is Windows Movie Maker. Windows Live Movie Maker is available for Win 7 and Win 8, and an older program, Windows Movie Maker 2.6 is for operating systems before that. Might be wrong on the OS compatibilities, but I think that's right. Simple to cut clips and add simple edits.

Two programs you should aim for are Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere Pro. These are the two "best" out there. I'm currently saving for Vegas, but these are very expensive. Once you learn how these work your content will be fantastic. It's what all the pros use.

I think I've covered everything.
- PC recording - Check
- Audio recording - Check
- Console recording - Check
- Screen recording - Check
- Video editing - Check

If you want to record "FaceCam", you can record either directly in Movie Maker (not tried this), or better yet use a screen recorder (like Camtasia) and edit it over your game video using Vegas or Premiere.

If you are recording multiplayer please do not use Skype for audio. Please encourage people to use Mumble for voice chat. Or Ventrillo, or the very least TeamSpeak. Mumble is so fast, lightweight and gives good quality. You don't want your mic quality to go to waste, or lag to mess up your flow.

Okay, I really hope this helped! Good luck. Send me a message on YouTube when you've started your channel and I'll be happy to take a look. My channel in sources.

Answer
Stupeflix is a great web based service for creating and uploading videos. Photobucket is a great web based and FREE editing tools. The software behind it comes from Adobe who make some of the best commercial ($$$) photo and video editors. Also check out Jaycut which allows you to export and save your videos! If you need/want more features downloading VideoSpin, VideoPad or VideoThang are great options. Still free, but you have to download the software.

For under $100 you can buy Adobe Premiere Elements.

Pixorial is a great tool for many media - free, with full features, for up to 10gb of video.

There is also new freeware version of Windows Movie Maker that works on Windows Vista, XP and even Windows 7. Microsoft has added and deleted features from each version and this version has all the features from each version plus some extras.
