I'm hiring a videographer to video my wedding and I want to edit it myself and maybe take some stills off of the data. To make sure I get what I want and don't get taken advantage of; what format do I need the video in so it'll work with my system and what quality of film should they shoot the wedding in? I'm going to for a mock-umentary style, 6 hours of filming, possibly 2 cameras. Also, anybody have an idea what program I should use to do this? Is iMovie worth anything?

Answer
1) Video is video. There is no film involved.

2) Any format will do. If the videographer is half decent, you are talking about a full day for about $800-$1,200 then add more for the second camera (and camera operator). If other "fancy" items are needed (Steadycam or similar vest stabilizing system, camera crane, lighting, etc. expect to spend more).

3) If the videographer captures using low compression, miniDV tape, that means importing real time. 6 hours of captured video = 6 hours of importing x 2 cameras = 12 hours of importing. In high definition (HDV format), decompressed and ready to edit, 1 hour of HDV imported decompressed video is about 44 gig x 6 hours x 2 cameras = 528 gigabytes of video. Add more $ for the importing time (in this case, 12 hours). If you are planning to do the editing, are you planning to supply the external hard drive to store this video? If not, what are you expecting the video to be stored on?

If the videographer is planning to capture AVCHD compressed video to flash memory, and hand you the memory cards, when you decompress the MTS files for editing, the same 44 gig per hour of imported/decompressed video applies. So you'll want an external drive, anyway. Be sure the external drive has platters that spin at 7200 rpm or 10,000 rpm. Less expensive drives (commonly used in laptops for power savings) spin at 5400 rpm and can be a problem when editing high definition video.

If you expect the videographer to give you the flash memory cards or the tape at the end of the shoot, be sure to get this in writing. This is not a common practice.

4) Since no film is used, there is no "quality of film" issue. The "Class" rating on the memory cards will be a requirement of the camera or camcorder used. Usually a Class 4 or faster is required - many use Class 10 cards. The Class rating is for the speed of the video data being written to the card. Either it works (higher Class = faster write speed) or it does not (counterfeit cards are marked with a higher class rating than they are) and will not be able to keep up with the speed to write the high definition video. But the *quality* of the captured video will be fine.

Digital tape - miniDV can capture up to 1080i video assuming an HDV camcorder is used. A single 60 minute tape can hold up to 63 minutes of HDV format, 1080i, high definition video. If the tape is new (never been used), then there is no "quality issue" that impacts video quality. I use Sony Premium miniDV tapes. They come in 8-packs from Fry's Electronics for about $28. Special "HD tape" is not needed. If the expectation is for the videographer to hand you the digital tape at the end of the shoot, then you will need a miniDV tape based HDV camcorder that can deal with the video for importing - over firewire connection between the camcorder's DV port and the Mac's firewire port. If the videographer uses an external flash memory or hard drive storage device for HDV format video storage, expect to pay more.

You did not mention what mics you require (shotgun mics, handheld dynamic mics, clip-on wireless lavaliere mics - there are many to choose from). You did not mention if an external audio record will be available/used or if only camcorder captured audio will be available. Synchronizing the audio is not dfficult if captured properly, but you will probably want a video editor that can deal with multiple audio tracks (like Final Cut or Adobe Premiere).

You did not mention which MacBook Pro you are using. If your plan is merely for cuts and cross fades between sequences and adding basic titles, the iMovie is fine - it is not designed to be used for multi-camera editing, but it is possible to do (very challenging). Final Cut (and Premiere) is much more multi-camera friendly as it supports multiple, simultaneous, video and audio tracks. There is a learning curve to all of these.

You did not tell us which version iMovie. This is important when dealing with AVCHD-compressed files. And some Macs do not have a firewire port (older MacBook Pros do) required for miniDV tape camcorders - and USB won't work (neither do USB-to-firewire adapters), but if your Mac has a ThunderBolt port (newer MacBook Pros do), then using a Thunderbolt to firewire adapter works great. If the videographer uses flash memory cards and hands them to you - and you need to convert the AVCHD compressed MTS files for the video editor to deal with them, then MPEG StreamClip from www.squared5.com works well...

If your videographer plans to use a dSLR to capture video, you need to know that dSLRs usually overheat and shut down after about 15 minutes of video capture (and take longer to cool down and return to use), so just a heads up.

Congratulations on your nuptials!

How do you make YouTube videos with the Canon Vixia HF G20?

Mike Walte

I recently bought a Canon Vixia HF G20. I want to make YouTube videos with it. According to the camera's manual, in order to make the files editable, you have to convert them to standard definition. Then once, going through the WMM editing process, and being cropped so it isn't surrounded by black lines, the video's quality is far less than one of a $1100 camera. I would just like to know what is the best way to make/edit youtube videos with this camera. Is there a specific file converter or editing software I should use? Is there another way to edit the files without converting them to standard definition? If anyone knows you would be a world of help to me. Thanks.

Answer
You spent $1,100 on a decent camcorder but are not using a video editor capable of dealing with AVCHD-compressed video - does not make sense to me. I've read the manual several times for the HF G20. There is nowhere that instructs the user to convert the MTS files to standard definition video in order to edit. If you actually do that, you will never be able to have high definition video again... Once the high def video is downsampled to standard def, that is the best it will be... there is no "upsampling". The video data has been discarded.

We don't know anything about your computer (manufacturer or operating system version) other than you are running some version of Windows, but the common video editors that can deal with AVCHD compressed video are Sony Vegas and Adobe Premiere for Windows and Final Cut and iMovie (assuming a relatively new Mac) for Mac OSX.

Typically, the camcorder is connected to the computer with a USB port and put into Computer mode. Launch the video editor and import or capture or Log and Transfer the video (it depends on the video editing application doing the importing. This pulls the high definition video in to the editor at high definition for editing. After editing, adding transitions, effects, titles, etc, the video editor render the final project to a media file (h.264 is good for AVI or MOV). It is best to stay at high quality. It will be a big file.

Use this file as the "source" for the other files you need... for example, then you can use a transcoder (like HandBrake from www.handbrake.fr) to create a very compressed MP4 for a personal media player and a DVD authoring application like WinDVD or iDVD to create a standard definition DVD that can be player in a regular DVD player (because the authoring app will create the required VOB file format) or as a "medium quality MOV, AVI or MP4 for uploading to any video sharing site like YouTube or Vimeo... or even Facebook.

If your computer is not built to deal with AVCHD-compressed video (CPU not fast enough, not enough physical RAM, not enough available hard drive space), expect editing and playback if high definition video - especially AVCHD-compressed video - to be jumpy or "laggy" (audio plays fine, video skips a lot). A CPU from within the last couple of years, 4-8 gig of RAM (more is better) and use of external drives for the video project files - and a start-up drive with at least 50% available space will likely be sufficient. Laptop drive spin at 5400 rpm. Normal drives for towers spin at 7600 rpm. Media drives spin at 10,000 rpm... you don't need these, but if you are convinced a laptop with a physical electronic hard drive will work, please don't be surprised when you hit problems. The 5400 rpm drives have enough work to do dealing with the operating system memory swap files - the least you can do is offload the video files onto external drives (hopefully spinning at 7600 rpm or faster). Thunderbolt external drive connectivity would be best, firewire next... and USB can work...

And I dumped the HF G20 for a HF S100. Since I already have a HDR-HC1, HDR-FX1 and HDR-FX1000, I did not need another medium sized camcorder (the HC1 does a fine job anbd has infrared night vision). The AVCHD compression is the same as the HF S100 and the S100 is way smaller. The HF G20 can capture great video - but the camcorder is just one part of a system of stuff that needs to work together for best results. Including the video editor... and mics, lights, steadying devices and understanding the capabilities and limitations of the equipment available for use...

Within a month i'm going to buy a custom built laptop and i'm wondering wether or not it's worth spending an additional 200⬠in order to get the i7-3820QM instead of the i7-3720QM? How much a performance increase would this really bring? I'll be using the PC for gaming, light video rendering/editing, and photoshopping. Wich processor would be best suited?

Answer
Go with the 3720QM. The 3820 gives you 2.7GHz (as opposed to the 2.6GHz of the 3720), and extra 2MB of Cache. That isn't worth it, in my opinion. It won't make a huge increase of performance.

If I were looking for a computer with all of this installed, I may pay around $500, depending on which type of computer it was, HDD size, and the actual model of the cpu.

You could also check out cashforlaptops.com . They won't pay for all of the video/photo editing software, but they don't care what's on it, as long as it turns on. I just sold a busted Vaio for $100 with a broken screen, that I got for free.

Nitelyecho

i'd like to design my own little 3d world that i can interact with, edit however i want with create animated creatures and realistic terrain. kinda like my own rpg world. any suggestions?

Answer
It depends on your hardware and wallet.

The industry standard is Autodesk's Maya and 3ds Max; fully 90% of all video games are built using Maya and 3ds Max. But as you might imagine, the hardware required to run them, and the cost of the software itself, isn't cheap. But if you want the best, that's the way to go.

The other industry favorite is Lightwave 3D, but again, not for the light-on-cash crowd.

For a more modest approach, the old standard that's been around for about 15 years is Bryce and Carrara. Originally develped and released by Metacreations, it's now owned and distributed by Daz3D. In addition, Daz3D also has Carrara and other tools for developing 3D worlds and characters. It's probably your best option to start out with, as the base programs are free. Daz3D makes money off of selling extras to build worlds with (check the Products area), but the prices are modest and won't bankrupt you.

Here's a link to their site:

Yes, good enough, but I really think you are better getting a Macbook Pro. The graphics card is much better and you really need speed (not to mention the largest hard drive) for video editing.

If your budget allows, skip the macbook and get the macbook pro.

I'm looking to buy a new laptop and I haven't used anything but Mac for over three years. I know Toshiba makes a decent laptop but what about these Samsung laptops? What are the top PC brands for laptops these days? I do a lot of video editing (hobby) so I need at least 6GB Memory to handle HD video. I have a 2TB external Hard Drive so the hard drive space on the computer doesn't need to be enormous. Any suggestions and links?
Not looking to spend more than like $800 for a laptop.

Answer
I found some and you can choose any one from these. I would recommend getting you HP Pavilion DV8 but I guess HP aren't making laptops anymore(rumor). Toshiba laptops are okay but the model of most of those looks pale and almost same. I don't have any experience with Samsung Laptop so I have no idea about it. However my friend has some Samsung Netbook and it is working flawless since a year. Asus laptops are #1 selling on most of the countries according to the internet and provided data from the sellers. They also make awesome ones. My wife has Asus Republic Of Gamers laptop and it can handle any games and applications along with multitasking without any lag.

Why do my videos save as pictures and not as videos on my computer?

Curiosity

I have a Jazz HDV189 camera and whenever I make a video on it, it doesn't save as a video when I go to upload it to my computer (a Toshiba laptop). It always saves as a picture, and so when I go to edit it on Windows Movie Maker (and it doesn't work with Windows Live Movie Maker either), it doesn't recognize it as a video file. Is there something that I can change in the settings so that my videos save as video files? Thanks so much in advance!

I also tried putting the memory card directly in the laptop and it still saves as a picture.

Answer
Hi Ms."Curiosity":

First, your Jazz camcorder saves videos (at least the HD ones) in MPEG AVC/H.264 file format (probably with an .MP4 file extension) that most Movie Maker versions don't support (they won't "see" them as videos).

The quickest and cheapest solution is to download Real Network's RealPlayer software which includes the free RealPlayer Converter (and RealPlayer Trimmer), which can directly handle your videos and transcode (convert) them to WMV format, which Windows Movie Maker can edit. (And you can use RealPlayer itself just to view your video files without transcoding.)

Here's the link for Real Network's download page: http://www.real.com/download

There was also a software CD that came with your Jazz camcorder that probably has some simple Media Import & Editing software to help with proper file transfer to your PC. You might dig up that CD and install the software on your computer.

And if your Toshiba is running either Windows Vista, Win7 or Win8, then you either have or can download from Microsoft the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, which can directly handle H.264 (MP4) video files. It's part of the new "Windows Essentials" free download at Microsoft.com.

Hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

Answer
Yes, version 2011 will open projects made with WLMM version 2010. There might be a problem re-opening the 2011 edited project in 2010 again because, at least for earlier versions of Movie Maker, there is no backward compatibility.

Overall i just want something that will last and is easy to use and organize things in T.T

I'm NOT going to be photo editing or making videos like crazy or playing video games so i don't know if a MACBook is right for me but I'm willing to hear any arguments :)

Answer
Gaming computers usually have very high specs, and they should work great for video editing, but they're also very expensive! If you're not going to be gaming with it, it's probably overkill. Look into getting something with a powerful CPU, and at least 4GB of RAM , but without the unnecessary gingerbread and price of a computer built for gaming.

Video cards are for calculating and drawing 3D graphics. You don't need a mega good one for editing and playing videos - that is handled by the CPU.

I have a PC windows XP and really want a good software that i can edit video's in, as my windows movie maker doesn't work and doesn't do half the things i want to do. Also i don't want to pay anything for it. As a lot of them are quite overpriced.

Answer
100% free: Video Spin, Jump Cut, JahShaka, ZS4 Video Editor, Zwei-stein, and WAX.

I can't speak the quality of any of these as I haven't used them. I just know of them and that they are free. I did see Video Spin rated the best free option by PC Mag at one point though.

Affordable: Pinnacle Studio, Sony Vegas Movie Studio, Corel Ulead Video Studio, AVS Video Editor, Adobe Premiere Elements.

All of these are pay applications. All of them have free trial downloads. So you can test out the software first and see if its worth paying for or not.

I think Sony and AVS are likely the easier ones to learn. Though none are that bad frankly. Adobe is likely the most robust feature set of the lot, but it is also the most expensive. Both Sony and Adobe have good online communities (so online support for you).

The other person is wrong though in saying that major players use Sony, that's untrue. The major editing software out there is Avid Media Composer/Film Composer and Final Cut Pro. That's what Hollywood editors use. Adobe Premiere Pro is gaining steam, and is a capable professional tool, but its a bit behind the curve in market penetration.

Sony Vegas Pro is popular in the wedding video/corporate video crowd. But its not used by big time players in Hollywood. Maybe a few indie houses here and there at best.

Processor L2 and L3 cache is highly important for 3D rendering and tranform. Cache operates as a temporary storage area where frequently accessed data can be stored for rapid access-In gaming and 3D rendering, this is crucial to rapid performance during these applications. The FSB (Front Side Bus) speed affects how fast the processor can access different regions and destinations on the grid (Motherboard) A higher front side bus will allow for faster access to the system's memory and graphics processor.

Morgan-ann

I already have Windows Live Movie Maker but I don't like the way my videos turn out. Is there any other free video editing software that isn't too hard to use but that will make a good video?

Answer
You can use Videopad Video Editor, which is a nice, free bit of software that will allow you to play around with videos. It can be found here:

http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/index.html

OR, you could use AVS video editor. This is a more powerful bit of software, but unfortunately, on the free version projects have a watermark on them. It can be found here if you're interested:

Hope this helped :D

I am looking for a really good video editing software to use. It doesn't matter if it is expensive or not. I have heard of a few called Final Cut, Sony Vegas Pro, imovie, etc. If you know any others, that will be helpful. Please let me know of the best or most expensive?

Answer
For more advanced, yes Apple's Final Cut Studio...

The simpler ones I know of are Windows Movie Maker and Apple's iMovie. I personally just use Movie Maker since it came with the Windows 7 software package.

Sites I listed below can show prices:

i also have alot of mp3's + movies, to store/play (need 2 usbs , 2.0). i would also like to edit movies,(need a firewire port). and play heavyer games (GTA..) i hate pre-packaged multimedia programs that come with the computer because they usually suck and i never use them. i need a computer that can handle all of this and it must must run fast. PRICE is not such a big deal but id like to spend under or a bit over $1500. whats the best laptop for me.

Answer
you would have to get something at least a gig of ram maybe 60 or 80 gig hd also at least 1.5 gigaherts and a good video card. well alienware might be a bit over your price range but you can check some of those out. if your willing to sacrifice some of your gaming then you can take a look at dell laptops. specific models i dont know but your gonna need all those specs at least maybe more but if you up the specs it will raise the price lots. hope this helped

Answer
I'm looking for almost the exact same thing as you minus WoW. I can't wait for the Sims 3. This is what I think I'm getting:
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dndwva3&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&m_3=4G2D&m_8=320GB&mo=3~4G2D&mo=8~320GB&kc=productdetails~laptop_studio_17
I'm upgrading to the 2.5 ghz processor, and downgrading to the 250 gb hard drive, and then replacing that hard drive with this one:

I don't know very much about computers but my brother helped me out, and he thinks it will be able to play the Sims 3. I wish they'd give us the requirements all ready XD.

I need to do some video editing, and the generic Windows software doesn't read .mov files. I need one that is free (or has a free trial) that is easy to use and can read the .mov filetype.

Thanks.

I know that some companies make laptops specifically for video editing, since the software needed for video editing can require a lot of memory.

What are the best laptops to purchase for this purpose and why?

Thanks.

Answer
This is the one situation where a MacBook Pro is what you're looking for. Macs are mostly useless and overpriced (in my opinion) but when it comes to professional-level audio/video production, Macs are the de facto standard.

What is a good laptop for video-editing?

IckleAnn

I currently have a Dell Inspiron 15 and it used to have a battery life of an hour and a half and now has a battery life of under 20 minutes. I've had it for about three years now and when I try to edit videos from my nikon d5100, it gets really slow. My brother says it's because it's too old and can't handle it or something. I was wondering what a good laptop for video editing is. Yes, I want a laptop because a PC is too big for my room and I need it to be portable...(the laptop should also be on the affordable side O______O)

Answer
When editing video RAM becomes a major issue along with having a large amount of hard disk space to use a s a virtual drive. Personally I use a HP DV7 with two I7 processors, 8GB RAM and 2TB disk space. You can probably get away with an 5 and 1TB of disk space, but I would say that you should try for that 8GB RAM, it will make a huge difference in photo and video editing- which make? It doesn't really matter unless you have the money to shell out for Alienware and their speed optimised machines, but that comes at a hefty premium
