What type of Computer should I buy?

best laptop for video and picture editing image

I have a budget of around $1200. And it's main functions will be video editing, picture editing, watching dvds, downloading music, downloading videos, and some gaming (only a little bit)
I am also still deciding whether i want the convienence of a laptop, or the power of a desktop.

Im only 15 so a desktop might be more logical since I'm living at home, and I wont be taking it anywhere.

Any thoughts?

Answer
Noah,

First: I'd go with a desktop. You already listed one of the pros (power).

Second: For $1200 you could get a pretty nice computer with how prices are now.

Third: Build your own.

www.newegg.com is where I go for good deals on components.

For video editing, you'll want at least a quad-core processor, 2.6+ Ghz ($150-250+)
At least 3 Gb of Ram ($120-160 for 4Gb sticks DDR2)
A monitor with a good contrast ratio and no color bleed (check reviews) ($200-300)
Mouse with 2000 DPI tracking, good for photo editing/gaming. ($40-60)
Video Card: Gtx 260 or Radeon HD 5770 ($160-200)

Just really need a keyboard, case, power supply, hard drive, and optical drive Which would run an extra ~$300

Even with the maximum I listed on each item, it comes out to $1270 - Granted this is an estimate.

Can anybody help me find a good but cheap laptop?

GlaZe

Okay. Im 15. My mom said I can get a laptop, but the highest price it can be is 500. I need a good laptop thats fast, can use video editing programs and picture editing, and one that can run Hd vids on youtube. Also I record my gameplay for Xbox, a good laptop that can run video software easily and fast. Thanks

Answer
Sup,

I'm guessing, by 500, you mean $500..?

If that's right, your window for the performance of the laptop is closed quite severely. What you need to understand, is that laptops from about $550 and below are not made with Video editing, gaming, and high-end rendering in mind. They are made to handle the basics, like word editing, browsing, (generally) HD youtube videos, etc.

To be able to run video editing programs effectively and without seriously irritating lag, you need a laptop that has an integrated graphics card (not a standard motherboard issue like an "Intel HD Graphics"), MORE than 4Gb Ram, and at least a high-end Core 2 duo CPU.

You have three ways forward here; First, is to rather save the money that your mom has given you and wait until you can afford a higher-end laptop; Second, is to consider a desktop based machine which generally works out cheaper and more value for money; Third, is to go ahead and buy the most expensive laptop you can afford which, in the end, won't really be as good as you expect it to be anyway.

I have been down the road of rushing into buying a laptop and, trust me, you regret it after the first week of buying it. You get your head into getting a laptop and so determined that when you finally realize your mistake, its way too late.

Desktop machines only truly make a difference in value when you go a bit higher in the price range. However, having said that, you could get your hands on some high end ("older") components that ,when combined, could actually give you quite an epic system. Again, for this to be effective, a higher budget will really count in your favour.

I would recommend that you rather hold off on buying a laptop until your budget reaches the $600-$700 bracket. Once there, you have much better options, that will handle both what you have in mind now and also other tasks that you will be able to do in the future.

If you are still determined to buy a laptop now, drop me a message and we'll check out your best options.

Brand buying advise

You get what you pay for. Systems with high end parts with low prices are to be viewed with suspicion. They have to cut corners somewhere to get the price down.

Apple makes a good quality laptop. The problem comes when it requires service or minor upgrades. It is near impossible to do anything with them. They even glue the battery and hard drive down so you can not change it. They solder the ram to the logic board so you can not increase it. They lock up most of the software so your stuck with what they approve.

Lenovo has serious stand behind their product problems. They bought IBM PC division and proceeded to drive the quality of the system into the ground. Their customer service is well below par. They even makes Dell customer service look good. The last and final thing to remember about them is they are a Chinese Government own company. It is up to you if you want to trust them.

Toshiba, Panasonic, Sony should be avoided because of their heavy modification of Windows and the drivers. If you remove some of the bloat they install, you can cripple the system.

Acer, Gateway, and eMachines should be avoided period. Low end system that are driving the race to the bottom.

Dell once made a good system and fell from grace. They are now struggling to regain their place in the market. Customer service is one of many problems with this company.

Alienware are glorified Dells and are more name then product. Priced extremely high for what you get. They do perform but you can get the same for less by looking around, just not packaged to be eye candy to the gamers.

Samsung has a history of using cheap parts in critical areas. Capacitors has been one area Samsung has a known history of going cheap, causing units to fail early. For that reason I would avoid them.

ASUS and HP do not modify Windows as bad as the other manufacturers. They have excellent build quality. They might add a lot of bloat but they also makes it easy to get rid of it.

Ultrabooks are the higher end of Wintel laptops but they have some of the same concerns as Apple. They make it next to impossible to change any hardware in them. Service of them will have to be done by the manufacturers. With most of them, you can not change your own battery or hard drive. Your paying for it being thin and slim. For the money your going to spend on it you can buy a much better laptop with more power.

Choose wisely.

What is a good laptop for picture editing?

Jorge

My parents bought me a Nikon d3100 for my birthday. I take LOADS of pictures with it.
I'm still an amateur photographer though. lol
I want to know what laptop is great for picture editing running Photoshop (Cs6) as well as other
photo editing software. Next year I plan to attend an art school and major in photography
but I want to be all prepared.
Thanks.

Answer
FYI: Photoshop CS 6 ranges from $ 700, up to over $ 2000. You, as an amateur photographer, need to learn the basics of photo-editing before you even think about paying that much for a Professional Editing Application.

Start with MS-Paint, built-in to Windows, then, after you master MS-Paint, move up to PaintDOTnet, free from:

Then, after you master PaintDOTnet, try the GIMP (free), or buy Photoshop Elements 11, for about $ 99, it does 90% of what PS CS 6 does. When you need PS CS 6 in school, the school will provide you with it for FREE while in school. You won't have to BUY PS CS 6 until you graduate, and only if you need it.

To answer your question, any modern laptop that can play streaming videos (like on YouTube) can run virtually all photo-editing Apps.

Should I get the HP Envy 15 or a Macbook Pro?

Celine Mor

I've been using a PC my whole life, but lately I've been leaning more towards the Macs. I'd be using my laptop for playing a few games (The Sims 3) and the usual, web browsing. I do some video and picture editing and really would like to make music and stuff, which the Macbook Pro is really good for. But I'd also like a good graphics card that will be able to run The Sims 3 fluently on all high settings.

Answer
HP envy, personally i think it looks better and windows 7 is IMO better than OSX. (I have a pc and my mom has a mac) OSX has some things that are good but a PC user switching to Windows 7 has a tiny learning curve from xp or vista ,but it takes a while to learn to use all the features of OSX. Why pay more for something not familiar and not as good (IMO). Windows 7 has many features that compete with OSX and for the most part the things like "stacks" are not all that important in your decision. The envy is more customizable and there are some great programs for video editing and music editing on the PC. (Macs dont really do anything special when it comes to multimedia, its just the preferred computer of many artists.)

Can i say macbook pro with retina is a gaming pc and designed to everything?

Abhimanyu

I am computer engg. 1st year student and I want to buy best laptop in the world before i go to university
What am i looking fo?:
1)coding
2)web development
3)video(for youtube) and picture editing
4)hardcore gaming(sometimes)
5)compiling and making sofwares
6)slim, beautiful, eye catching
7)watching hd movies

There is only one more laptop which i am considering and thought of buying: razor blade

because i live in India i can't get razor laptop shipped here. Razor doesn't ship outside US and Canada

but my aunt lives in US so i have no prob. in getting it from her.

the only prob. i think razor blade have is? it's just a gaming laptop not a multi purpose laptop. Also, i don't wanna go with Alienware(someone told Alienware is overpriced crap and target kids saying we make THE BEST GAMING LAPTOPS)

I have seen people playing games like skyrim, GTA4, bioshock, crysis3, battlefield3,nfs shift and other graphic intensive games as well. I can't say apple is not a gaming laptop.....but all want to know is will it future games like GTA5 and other running on boot camp. Also, I have heard that mac turns too hot while playing games even dell laptop turns too hot without even playing games.....hahaha but is it NORMAL?

which mac i want to buy:
15 inch MACBOOK PRO with RETINA DISPLAY
2.7GHz quad-core
Intel Core i7 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz) with 6MB shared L3 cache

plz don't suggest me anything related to money. Cost is not a factor for me.

Answer
The Razer Blade would be the better choice. Macs are not suited for gaming.

If cost isn't a factor, go on eBay and find an Alienware. Despite what people say, they ARE good computers. You just can't buy them from the company directly, it's costly. You're better off buying Alienware-branded items on eBay. Just make sure you can trust the seller.

Macs won't run Crysis 3, BF3, Skyrim, or any of the games you listed. If you installed bootcamp, MAYBE, but probably not BF3.

I'd go with the Alienware x51 personally. It's not a laptop but a console-sized gaming PC. so you will have the power of a desktop and will be able to upgrade it easily, unlike laptops. And if it has HDMI you could easily plug it into any TV or monitor. Again, do NOT buy it on the Dell/Alienware site. You will find better deals on eBay, I got my Aurora R4 for $1700. Had to do some upgrading and plan to do more in the near future but it was an amazing deal versus the $5000 the official website wanted.

You could try CyberPowerPC as well, but this is also a costly option much like Alienware which is why I didn't go with it.
