What is the best free video editing and special effects software?

I am looking for a really good video editing software and speacial effects software. Im not expecting it to be like adobe premeir or after effects but pretty good and reliable. I am also looking for your oppinions on them too.

lightworks beta is probably best free editing option. It's professional level video editing software that has features not found on many of the popular editing programs. It's based on the lightworks turnkey systems that have been a staple in Hollywood for years. There are small glitches but can't beat the price for something so powerful. There is no quality special effects program that is free. Wax is ok if you have a lot of time on your hands and want to create graphics that look like the original wolfenstein 3-d but the guy stopped making and supporting it years ago. I believe lightworks will use plugins for premiere but have not tested that. There are many plugins that will provide a lot of the functionality of after effects but unfortunately are not free
