What is the best software for editing and cutting video clips?

I have some .avi movie files on my hp dv7 laptop and I would like to cut and merge pieces of my movies together. I wanna make little montages and slide-shows like the ones that I see on you-tube. I know absolutely nothing about video-editing so can anyone tell me the names of some nice, basic, user-friendly (extra emphasis on the 'user-friendly') type software that does junk like this. All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance :)

Well i need a really good free video editing software. i need one that wont make viruses on my laptop and not cause problems with my laptop. And if you could but you dont have to... explain why it is a good free video editing software... Thanks

Look up. There is a box that says "What are you looking for?" And beside it is a Search Y! Answers box. If you type free video editing software in that box, and then click the Search button, you will see 100x of this same question. There are many, many examples already there for you.
