I'm a 16 year old girl, and I want to start gaming more. I have a crappy HP pavilion g series laptop and I want to buy an actual gaming computer, that isn't very expensive. What should I buy, and what would you recommend I do for faster computer functions and just an overall better computer. (like laptop vs desktop, and what brand)
Mike, you are speaking another language. Could someone make a little more sense?

Answer
First you need to buy a new PC not apple because they don't make a lot of games for a apple. I have a HP hpe 570f please google the computer because it is a little over 2 years old and my son will be playing a game on one screen while he is editing videos on another screen and he will have skype up on the third screen. He has a Phenom ll X6 which means it is a 6 core cpu or processor and the more cores you have the more things your computer can do at the same time. You will need a graphics card with at least 1 GB of DDR5. Sometimes when your looking at a computer on line it will not tell you how much DDR5 or DDR3 it has so you will need to google every graphic's card. A graphics card that has DDR3 is not as fast as the DDR5. The DDR5 cards start at $59 at tigerdirect.com which is a good web site with cheap prices. Another important part of a gaming computer is the RAM, I suggest that you have 8 GB but no less than 4 GB. And if your game starts to lag and you have the right cpu and graphics card but only 4 GB of RAM then you need to buy more RAM. You need to stick with AMD cpu's or processors because they cost less and offer more than intel because intel charges for their name. Don't buy a "gaming computer" because they charge more for calling it a gaming computer. Go to hp.com and pick desktop or laptop. The desktop will be less expensive and a better gaming computer but if you want a laptop click on normal everyday computers and then you will see lots of computers and on the right side you can click on customize and buy then you can upgrade the computer if you want. When your playing games you can go to the games settings and lower the resolution if your computer is having a hard time playing it and you can also play the game in a smaller window to help your computer. My other son which is going to college in the fall just bought a Lenovo y400 which he bought at lenovo.com and upgraded the hard drive to an Hybrid which has 16 GB of SSD and the rest the regular harddrive (HHD). The Solid State Drive has no moving parts so it is a lot quicker and it starts the computer up in 9 seconds where as the regular hard drive has moving parts so it is slower. The regular hard drive is fine but if you have extra money get the SSD or at least the Hybrid because it is less expensive. Anyway my son bought the Lenovo Y 400 on sale for $799 and it runs all the intense games on ultimate resolution on full screen. So look up both of the computers of my sons and them shop. It is always fun to buy a new computer. Have fun and enjoy!!

Why do gamers spend thousands on gaming desktops and laptops instead of buying an Xbox or Playstation?

John

I've seen some gaming laptops selling for around 4000.00 US dollars. Why are they better than a 300.00 Xbox? Especially with the rumors that the new Xbox will have 16 cores. I can see spending thousands if you need Microsoft for heavy duty video editing and similar stuff like that. Thank you

Answer
Off the top of my head:
higher framerates, higher resolutions, player mods, mouse and keyboard, more games, game prices tend to start lower and drop more quickly, different games...

I have yet to play a rumor that works better than my inexpensive desktop.

Personally I think gaming laptops are foolish, high end graphics cards produce a lot of heat, something a laptop is poorly suited to dealing with. Way more expense for similar performance in a laptop vs desktop as well.

There are ways in which consoles are better, but development has seemingly shifted away from some of those strengths (couch co-op games where have you gone?)

What laptop should I get for audio editing and some video game performance for US$1100?

Hello! I am planning to study sound engineering and I need a laptop that I can use for my school (and hopefully in the future, work) projects. Since this is my first laptop purchase ever, and I'm selling my desktop to help fund for it, I want it to have some desktop-replacement quality.

I don't really need a souped-up video game machine (for US$1100, who am I kidding anyway), but I want it to be able to keep up with current and near-future video game hardware requirements. The audio editing part is most important though. Do I need a separate sound card to do audio work, like midi sequencing, basic recording and the like?

I'm currently torn between the Dual-core incarnations of the HP Pavilion and the Gateway MX. Which is better? Do you suggest any other laptop out there?

Thanks! :D

Answer
Here is a great laptop from Compusa.com, they are almost sold out! A great price too, except I would upgrade the Video Card and RAM (double it at least).

http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?pfp=BROWSE&N=200334+502365&Ne=502360&product_code=329133&Pn=Pavilion_zd8220us_Notebook#ts

Compare this laptop (Pavilion zd8220us Notebook) to these other ones (Pavilion dv6113us Notebook, Pavilion dv8408us Notebook, Pavilion dv2130us Notebook). These last three almost don't compare except for dv6113us which has twice the Bus Speed than the zd8220us (1.6 GHz vs. 800 MHz). But 800 MHz is better than 667 MHz or 533 MHz. But you should notice that even though the dv6113us has 1.6 GHz Bus Speed, it only has 2 x 256 KB L2 Cache Size. Once again, going back to the processor, it is a single core, but with HT, and it's twice as fast as the other two, bigger screen, and Bluetooth capability as well. So with the one this one's priced, you can upgrade it, and get yourself some accessories, as well! Hard Drive speed is kinda slow, but you can get that upgraded as well. Anyhow make up your mind fast. Read the reviews, don't blame me if I didn't point somethings out. And oh yea, I win! Again!

what type of computer is best for a college student?

Yudith Car

I really need a computer and I'm not sure if a laptop or a home computer would be the best choice. I don't know much about brands or the type of software I would need so please the more detailed the answer the better.

Answer
It's hard to say without knowing what your pursuing degree wise. Or what type of classes you will be taking.

However for most students who aren't taking classes that involve CAD, Drawing, Video editing or gaming. Just about any current laptop/pc is going to get you by when it comes to listening to music, using the internet and doing Office stuff.

Laptop vs desktop

A laptop can come to class/school with you, and overall you can take it anywhere. However for the same amount of money you put into a laptop you can get a more powerful desktop computer.

So do you need/want portability. Are you gaming or taking classes that involve CAD, Graphics, heavy editing?

How much are you looking to spend? If you want high performance and some portability you can either get a expensive laptop, or... Get a desktop and a nice netbook to take to class for writing papers and browsing the internet.

As for brands. It comes down to personal choice and specs. Honestly I don't like HP and have had to deal with a lot of my friends bringing me their broken HP's both laptop and desktops. However their business/pro models tend to be pretty good quality wise.

I personally have had good luck with Dell's and Gateway as far as laptops go. Some of the Asus laptops are really nice. Acer isn't too bad and is the parent company to Gateway and Emachine.

Others will probably chime in with their opinions, take all our opinions with a grain of salt. Especially when it comes down to brands as their a lot of extremest for and against certain brands. However if you want a better answer, let us know what type classes you will be taking and how much money your looking to spend..

Good luck!
