Need help with video editing with new camera?

I have:
Toshiba Laptop

Samsung HMX Q10 camcorder

SanDisk SD card

All this stuff is way over my head. So I need help, from tech savy people. I want to record video footage. take that footage and edit it(clean it up a bit and add text and sound). Put it on you tube.

I have tried to use intelli studio(program that comes with my camera, but when I play the footage in Intelli it lags and skips. I have 83GB free space, on my laptop, so I dont see why it would be slow. I cannot get windows movie maker to upload the videos. I heard stuff about converters, .mvi mp4's blah blah. Bottom line is, I'm lost and confused

Preferably I would like an editing program that is free forever (like windows movie maker), not free 30 day trial then buy.

You'd better get a total video converter. If you can't import some special video formats into the video editing software, directly change the format with this video converter.

I don't have any money to buy one
and it is a surprise for my parents.

Get the trial version of Ulead Video Studio, it has a 30-day trial version. OR get the trial of Cyberlink Power Director, they're very similar and the best today for editing videos. They are also very easy to use.
