Q. What's a good editing/ movie making software? I'm making some videos which are a mix of real life but also machinima (machine+cinimea ex Sims 2 and Halo movies). But I'm on a low budget for this, maybe only up to $200 at the most. Any reccomendations?
I have a PC by the way if that helps. I'm just looking for alternatives to Windows Movie Maker.

Welcome to the wonderful world of video editing. You are in a good price range for your level of editing. There are several options between $40 and $200. I recommend two products in that range, capable of handling what you are looking to do. The first is Adobe Premiere elements bundled with Photoshop Elements. Last I checked this was around $150 or so. This software is relatively easy to use with several powerful options available. Plus Photoshop is often used in video production for creating Masks and Mattes. Alternatively there is Sony Movie Studio 8 Platinum(Also $150 at Target). This is a little harder to use but has the advantage of using the same engine as it's professional cousin and can be upgraded at a later time. It also comes with several effects and sound effects library. In my opinion this is better for effects, and Premiere is better for things like documentaries that require titles and still images.
At the $400 range you can begin to get professional software like NewTek's Speed Edit. This is a great program to start out with as a video professional, though it does lack some of the features of Final Cut and Premiere CS3. If you look around you can also find Sony Vegas pro 8 at the $450 range. (I bought this two weeks ago at Amazon.com)
I think for your application, Vegas is the way to go. It will handle the different formats and aspect ratios from real life and machinima. You should download the free 30 day trial at the Sony creative software site and try it.
