FireHawk

I love video editing! I have had a Desktop PC for a long time and done some great work with it however, I am ready to move to something more advanced than what I have been doing (Windows Movie Maker). Since I want a new computer, I might as well go portable. I like Apple's macbooks, but I wanted to see if there were any other computers that offered everything that macs offer and maybe more features for less $$$. Any Suggestions?

Answer
Hi FireHawk,
video editing requires a powerful and speedy machine. Many of their laptops
are designed for video games, which means that their multi-media capabilities are top of the line. Though Alienware is one of the best, Hewlett-Packard is good too. Make sure to get quality graphics and audio cards. nVIDIA makes great graphics cards while Audigy sound cards are best for real-time editing.

Try Alienware M17X - Laptop with IntelCore 2 Quad Processor, 17" LCD, 4GB RAM, 500GB HARD DRIVE - Intel Core 2 Quad Processor,
17" LCD, 4GB RAM, 500GB HARD DRIVE
Intel® CoreTM2 Quad processor Q9000 Features 4 processing cores,
1066MHz system bus, 6MB cache and 2.0GHz processor speed per core.
IEEE 1394 (FireWire) port and 4 high-speed USB 2.0 ports
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M graphics Features 1GB dedicated video memory for intense detail.
17" WXGA+ LCD widescreen display With 1440 x 900 resolution showcases movies, games and other images in impressive detail http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003JI4ZP6?ie=UTF8&tag=digitsy-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B003JI4ZP6

How to edit video for the first time?

Hi there,

Can you recommend some free and not free programs to edit digital video? Never edited before, can't wait! I have a PC desktop and an Apple laptop.

Answer
On the free side, you'll have iMovie on your Mac, and Windows Movie Maker (or whatever they call it now) on Windows.

You can also download free trial versions of most programs.

VirtualDub, for Windows, is one basic free program that some people use for basic editing as well. In addition, it'll be some time yet, but I see that VideoLAN, who makes a great media player, is also working on an open-source video-editing program, VLMC. Might be worth looking at, down the road when it's more developed.

Beyond that, you'd be paying. A few possibilities:

Windows only-
-Corel/Ulead VideoStudio
-Pinnacle/Avid Studio
-Sony Vegas

Mac only
-Final Cut Express
-Final Cut Pro

Cross-platform (Windows/Mac)
-Adobe Premiere Elements
-Adobe Premiere Pro
-Avid Media Composer

If you're a student, note that you can get STEEP discounts on most of those programs, either through the developers or through sites like http://www.specialtyvideosupply.com or http://www.journeyed.com

Keep in mind that video-editing requires some intense computer, so make sure that whatever program you choose, your computer meets its system requirements. Also, as the programs get more expensive, they get more features, but they take more time to learn. First-time editors jumping into Avid Media Composer or Final Cut Pro might be in over their heads...then again, I learned on Avid back in school, so it's far from impossible.

Editing is indeed incredibly fun, good luck to you!
