I am wondering what the best website is to buy software, with discounts for students. I am trying to buy video editing and animation software, like adobe after effects and sony vegas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Both of these companies for the software programs you ask about provide student discounts. It just depends on whether you qualify. You will need to read up on it to see:

Sony:

Adobe:

Any suggestions on how to master the Canon download/editing software for a 30D camera?

I find the instructions and the software incredibly complex and intimidating? Any suggestions on how to do it all relatively simply, e.g., getting my feet wet slowly and then learning more as I go along? Any books or videos that can help?

Answer
The software is a basic editing program and is VERY limited. To my knowledge there are no books or videos on it, as its is updated often and again very limited on its uses.

I would suggest getting either Photoshop CS2 or CS3. If you can afford them, be aware of the education version, as they are full versions and a huge savings even for Part time students!!!) Or else you can get Photoshop Elements 5 or 6 at most shops, even Costco or here on Amazon. They will help you a lot more, and CS2 or CS3 will do more than you can imagine!!!! There are a ton of great books or vids on each program. I suggest the ones by Scott Kelby. He writes then for non computer people, and mostly towards photographers, so its easier for most to understand and follow.

Hope this helps. The 30D is a great camera. Enjoy it. BTW if you plan to upgrade to a 40D or newer, and shoot Raw, you will need CS3 to process it, or use the canon software and then save it and open it with another program. Thats why I finally had to upgrade as all my cameras I use were only supported in CS3 for raw.
