Free or affordable video editing software (better than Window Live Movie Maker?)?

whitewolfe

I started to become familiar with Windows Movie Maker, but recently had to upgrade to a new PC, which has Windows 7. For some reason the regular Movie Maker software is NOT available for Windows 7! Instead, I only have Windows "Live" Movie Maker, which seems less powerful.

I just made my first real editing effort on Window Live Movie Maker and I found it to be really lacking. Apparently I was overwhelming it with the number of cuts and effects I was doing, because I kept running into inexplicable and frustrating bugs. The only explanations I could find online for these phantom problems were "too many cuts overwhelm the program".

What would you suggest as the "next" program to try? I wish I could get regular Movie Maker but it won't download onto my Win7 platform. I'm not an expert but it seems like I am wanting more advanced features. What's a good free or low-cost program to try for an amateur? I once tried downloading some NCH software and all it did was install crap into my browsers that were very difficult to get rid of.

Answer
You can get an XP version and the regular Vista version of Movie Maker for Windows 7. The XP version (2.6) developed for the very few Vista machines that lacked the muscle to run the Vista version installs on Windows 7 with no problems.

The WMM version that is normally installed with the Vista operating system has to be compiled with an installer to make the registry changes it needs to run on Windows 7 machines.

Blaine is a known Movie Maker expert. He's the moderator of the Titles, Effects and Transitions forums at windowsmoviemakers.net. His downloads are clean and safe - and great;-) If you download the Vista version, be sure to take a look at Blaine's WMM add-ons while you're on his site.

(I usually use Movie Maker because it's less complicated than most. I've also downloaded a lot of extras for it that give it more functionality and I've made or downloaded custom profiles for higher quality video output ....but when I want to edit with a "real" editor, I use Corel's Video Studio Pro. All the commercial editors do more - once you learn to use them - but they also have a learning curve. Video editing can be more complicated than a class in theoretical physics;-)
