Why do my videos save as pictures and not as videos on my computer?

Curiosity

I have a Jazz HDV189 camera and whenever I make a video on it, it doesn't save as a video when I go to upload it to my computer (a Toshiba laptop). It always saves as a picture, and so when I go to edit it on Windows Movie Maker (and it doesn't work with Windows Live Movie Maker either), it doesn't recognize it as a video file. Is there something that I can change in the settings so that my videos save as video files? Thanks so much in advance!

I also tried putting the memory card directly in the laptop and it still saves as a picture.

Answer
Hi Ms."Curiosity":

First, your Jazz camcorder saves videos (at least the HD ones) in MPEG AVC/H.264 file format (probably with an .MP4 file extension) that most Movie Maker versions don't support (they won't "see" them as videos).

The quickest and cheapest solution is to download Real Network's RealPlayer software which includes the free RealPlayer Converter (and RealPlayer Trimmer), which can directly handle your videos and transcode (convert) them to WMV format, which Windows Movie Maker can edit. (And you can use RealPlayer itself just to view your video files without transcoding.)

Here's the link for Real Network's download page: http://www.real.com/download

There was also a software CD that came with your Jazz camcorder that probably has some simple Media Import & Editing software to help with proper file transfer to your PC. You might dig up that CD and install the software on your computer.

And if your Toshiba is running either Windows Vista, Win7 or Win8, then you either have or can download from Microsoft the latest version of Windows Movie Maker 2012, which can directly handle H.264 (MP4) video files. It's part of the new "Windows Essentials" free download at Microsoft.com.

Hope this helps,

Macbook or PC Laptop?

John

I am going into Grade 9 this year and my family agreed that they will buy me a laptop. This laptop will be mainly used for school purposes, normal everyday purposes, and possible some video/editing purposes as well. I am interested in graphics and film and I would like to start my own youtube channel. Here's the problem, which computer do I get? Many people say that the Macbook is just a 'brand' and they are overly expensive. They have the same specs are PC Laptops they say. I assume that this is true because they are similar but the price is very different. I have been using PC my whole life so I feel more comfortable using PC. Also, my father is able to fix PC Laptops and I heard that PC's are more 'free' and 'easier' to obtain hard drives, etc, while Macbook's need a specific product from the Apple company. The upside to the Macbook although is that it seems like such a great laptop. I also feel that PC Laptop's don't give a program for movie/film editing unless I buy one.

I am so confused. Macbook or PC Laptop? And if you do choose Macbook, would it be the Macbook Air or the Macbook Pro?

Thanks for reading!

Answer
I purchased both the newly updated 13" MacBook Air and the updated 13" MacBook Pro the day they were announced at WWDC and released for sale in June 2012. After using the two machines side-by-side for a couple weeks now, I can say that the MacBook Air offers superior performance in virtually every respect to such a degree that I've pretty much stopped using my brand new MacBook Pro.
